PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, FRIDAY, JAN. 17, 2014) — THE PLANET has additional information on the dual fatality in the car that crashed into Pittsfield High School. Two Pittsfield men, Ernest Duck Jr., 37, and Tariq Salley, 34, died in the crash. Police say they believe Duck to be the driver. The Boring Broadsheet reported that court records show Duck was on probation for driving without a license.

Here’s what the BB doesn’t have. Our sources say:

* A preliminary investigation has the rented 2013 Nissan Altima doing between 80 and 100 mph when it drove south through the Second Street-East Street intersecction before going airborne and slamming into the concrete wall base of the high school.

* The crash ripped the car into pieces. Sources say the police found $100 bills strewn throughout the wreckage.

According to a criminal justice source speaking on condition of anonymity, the men were barreling down Second Street  because they thought they were were being tailed by a vehicle driven by undercover cops. Apparently, the driver panicked and lost control of the speeding car. Capt. John Mullin told BB scribe Nathan Mayberg “there was no evidence that the vehicle was being chased at the time of the crash.”

Notice the careful wording of the statement. It does not rule out that the vehicle was being chased. It merely says there’s “no evidence” of it.

Let’s add this up:

* Two men from Pittsfield in a

* Rented car

* $100 bills

* Driving 80 to 100 mph through one of the busiest intersections in the city

* A police tail

Looks like a drug deal, doesn’t it?

These findings are not official and could change before the investigation concludes.

THE PLANET has also learned that there’s a petition circulating in the high school calling for a fence to be erected around the perimeter of the school. This foolish overreaction points out the folly of acting on emotions and not on reason and logic. We’ll let you think it through, although we will offer this much: If the city wants to prevent incidents like this, perhaps it might want to take a better look at the caliber of individuals it is bringing into town and the trade that comes with them.

—————————————————————————-

FIRST COUNCIL MEETING: FIRST REVIEWS ARE IN

So how did the “new and improved” city council fare in its first regular meeting with new members, new seating arrangements, and a new chair? THE PLANET talked to several sources who were there and got a gander at some of the meeting on tape.

We present a summary report from our sources:

* The meeting went 2.5 hours with a fairly light agenda.

* Twice President Melissa Mazzeo called councilor Kathy Amuso “councilor Mazzeo.”

* Councilor Tony Simonelli called councilor [Lisa] Tully “councilor Tuttle.”  Councilor Chris Connell called president Mazzeo “madam clerk” twice. Hmmm, was Connell Freudian slip showing. He is, after all, council veep.

* Tully never spoke except to vote. One source said “the look on her face was that of a deer in the headlights.”

* There were at least three  points of order made by councilor a other than the vice president.  There were five “points of order” in total. For those who don’t know, when a member of a formal meeting calls a “point of order,” that member os questioning whether correct procedure is being followed. The city council meets under Demeter’s rules, not Roberts.

* The president allowed councilor Amuso to amend her petition before there was a motion to approve what was on the agenda, which is not allowed.  Councilors are required to take any agenda item as presented before amending it.

* Councilor Kevin Morandi tried to make a point regarding names submitted in consideration for the ordinance review committee. Morandi said asking councilor Jonathan Lothrop to submit names to the president after the meeting (and before the next meeting) would delay the process of choosing names.  Councilors John Krol, Barry Clairmont, and J-Lo tried to explain to him that as long as the president brought only three names back to the next meeting, it wouldn’t cause a delay. Morandi kept saying it somehow would delay the process. He did not offer an explanation.

* Mazzeo “really did try to do a good job,” according to one of our spies in the peanut gallery.  “She was nervous, and you could see it.  She muttered under her breath to herself a few times.  You could tell she was trying to keep track of where she was and what was next.  She had to ask the clerk for help I believe three times.”  Example: “Is this a role call vote? and “Do we need a super majority on this item?”

* One source said the biggest mistake made at the meeting was when the council president put the seven names for the ordinance review committee on the agenda, before the council could vet the names. [EDITOR’S NOTE: THE PLANET tracked down the political connections of these seven folks. See below.]

* Our city hall spies tell us the new council president “held court on Monday at city hall and was there all day preparing.  Connell was there with her all day.  Morandi and Simonelli stopped in for periods of time.” THE PLANET admires this diligence in preparation. We expect Mazzeo will quickly get more comfortable in the role, and, based on this one meeting, it appears likely she will work hard to improve.

——- 000 ——-

 CLAUSTROPHOBIC DEGREES OF SEPARATION

It came as a surprise to streetwise observers that Melissa Mazzeo, in her new role as council president, would like the names of seven people as prospective members of the ordinance review committee. Appointment to the committee — which almost all right-minded, sane, “normal” people would rank akin to getting one’s eyes repeatedly poked by Moe Howard — isn’t viewed that way by political types, players and wannabes included. They see great value in the face time, “being seen,” and being perceived of as “a player.” THE PLANET reminds the Magnificent Seven that a title and peerage are not at stake but a bone-dry seat on a legalistic panel serving in outer Podunk.

Mazzeo named Jody Phillips, Victoria Kane, Pam Green, Franz Forester, Dave Murphy, Bob Cornwell (submitted by Chris Connell), and Matt Kerwood (submitted by Kathy Amuso).

Pittsfield being Emperor in the Land of Political Incest, you know these names weren’t submitted as blokes from the hayfields or the mean streets. They have a certain amount of “3P” — “Pittsfield Political Pedigree” … such as it is.

— Phillips is former city clerk. She worked on Mazzeo’s campaign for at-large in the last election. Mazzeo worked on Phillips’ campaign when she ran for register of deeds.

— Kane was a member of the charter review commission.

— Green is a former assistant city solicitor. Mayor Dan Bianchi appointed her to the PEDA board. Green’s husband, too, is a Bianchi appointee. He serves on the board of health.

— Franz y’all know about. If not, look under “P” for “Pummelin’ Pam.” Otherwise, check out THE PLANET archives from Wednesday of this week.

— Murphy ran against John Krol in 2009. Need we say more about his bona fides??

— Cornwall formerly worked in the community development office.

— Kerwood, well, y’all know about him, too.

Inbreeding provides the comforting illusion that one’s progeny will live for the ages. The truth is, however, that it produces lots of genetic mutations and none for the better.

The ordinance review committee will review the new city charter against existing city code. It will have five members. Two have been named: city clerk Linda Tyer and councilor-at-large Barry Clairmont. Tyer serves as a requirement of the law. Clairmont serves because the previous council approved him at its final meeting of all time.

Bombo The Great, THE PLANET’s official prognosticator, says it will be Phillips, Franz, and Green.

——————————————————————————

“One can see what will trouble / This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is. / Were he not gone, / The woodchuck could say whether it’s like his/ Long sleep, as I describe it coming on, / Or just some human sleep.”Robert Frost, final lines, “After Apple Picking,” (1914).

Are you kidding about the fence around P.H.S. ? I hope so. That is one of the most ludicrous things I have heard lately in a city where ludicrous occurrences are the norm. If you put a “fence” around one school then all the parents at all the schools are going to want fences to protect their kids.

and just what kind of fence would protect from a car barreling at 100 miles per hour? In a city like Pittsfield, infested with drugs as it is, this car could have come from anywhere and crashed anywhere. Whoever first came up with this fence idea is either an idiot or someone who sells fencing.

Have inmates in the House of Correction dig a moat around PHS. This will help with them not crossing everywhere also.

Truly a miracle by the Dome that no one was hurt, killed or seriously injured other than the victims. A fence is the dumbest idea I’ve heard for a solution to the problem. Keep your arms extended is my suggestion to the person that came up with that idea, it’s harder for them to get the net over your head that way.

Mazzeo is not qualified to be the Council President period. After four years of being on the council she still lacks the understanding of the parliamentary process. She has no educational background or practical experience of being in any leadership role. Her appointment to the chair is pure political in nature and is a good example of why government is dysfunctional. If she was meeting with several select council members during the day before the public council meeting is that a violation of the open meeting law. I think I remember her accusing her colleagues on the last council of the same. Bottom line, Mazzeo is a person who knows how to win elections but has no idea how to do the job afterword. Could someone please tell her she is Councilor Mazzeo?

Is anyone else as outraged as I am by a part-time mayor? There is no leadership in this city, no one with a forward vision and working for it. I pay over $2500 /mom in taxes and I am sick and tired of no one at the helm and the city council headed in the wrong direction.

Hmmmm two known gang bangers and drug dealers, $100 bills and a two tragic deaths. If the police were chasing them and lying to the public about it thats a problem. I wonder if anyone had their scanner on leading up to this a call detailing the plate is public info and would be logged as well as available by law. (Get on dat planet!) Fb is telling tails about gang drug turf wars and a opposing gang confrontation at the er as well as the possibility one of the deceased was an CI. It would be nice if we had a news source and police force who prided themselves with truth justice and transparency wiyh the public so we wouldnt have to sift theough the rumors lies and misinformation of social media from the mouths of friends fellow criminals and baby mamma’s. Sorry for any typos im going to work.

Scott there were many witnesses that saw them heading down 2nd street and not one said any car was speeding behind them.It was more of a miracle than a tragedy. There is no fence, that would have prevented many innocent people from death or serious injuries, if this happened 30 minutes earlier.

Where’s the discussion of the Hall Trial? The Eagle is covering it by digesting Springfield Republican’s reports, and Valenti is mucking around two gangsters crashing their car.

The Hall murders are a significant crime involving at least a dozen conspirators, the hells angels and negligence of the DA/prosecution. And three men were murdered in a fashion that motivated David Lynch to question the ‘freedom from nature’ society promises.

From 2004
PITTSFIELD — Three alleged gunmen involved in two separate shootings were arraigned on $10,000 cash bail or surety bond in Central Berkshire District Court yesterday for allegedly kicking and beating a fellow inmate at the Berkshire House of Correction on Jan. 7.
Judge Alfred A. Barbalunga entered not-guilty pleas for Christopher T. Horton, 19, of Thomasville, N.C., Tariq Salley, 26, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Reggie W. Ellerbee, 24, of Hamlin Street, Pittsfield, on one count each of aggravated assault and battery.

Horton, Salley and Ellerbee were reportedly caught kicking and punching Ostrander in his head and body at the Berkshire House of Correction shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 7, according to a report by Mjr. David J. Sinopoli, security director for the sheriff’s department.

When correctional officers attempted to break up the fight, the three assailants “made every attempt” to continue beating Ostrander, Sinopoli reported.

Sinopoli stated that he told Horton they should not have attacked Ostrander, but Horton allegedly replied they had no remorse about the beating.

Horton and Salley are each being held on $100,000 bail for allegedly shooting at three Pittsfield woman in the Cherry Street area on Nov. 12, 2005. They are both charged with three counts of armed assault with the intent to murder, assault and battery charges and other related offenses.

I agree with sparkie that Mazzeo has no business being council president. The only reason she is the prez is because Dan Bianchi got his slate of candidates that he wanted in office. MelMaz is the prez so that whatever his honnor wants she will deliver.. there is no doubt that Amuso, Simonelli, Cotton, Morandi, Connell and Tully are there to do what Bianchi wants. He will say jump and they will all say how high? I voted for Cotton 2 years ago but did not this time around because i felt that in 2 years he did nothing. He said nothing and did nothing..

Although I did not vote for anyone who had ANY connections to Dan Bianchi (i wrote in someone else for Mayor) I can honestly say that Pittsfield voters will get what they voted for.. An idiot as council pres and an even bigger idiot in the corner office… what did everyone think of Dan giving MelMaz flowers on innauguration day? was that a campaign expense or did the card tell her to do as he wants?

Simonelli wants council meetings to start at 6:30 pm so those of us who work til 7 or 8 cant see what they are doing… maybe we can find some new people to run in ’15

I am going to give Mrs. Mazzeo a chance. I have lost faith in Bianchi but I am hoping she will not want to ruin her reputation like so many other local politicians have. If she ever wants to move up the political ladder she needs to be a people person now. It is better to wait until you are mayor to turn into a smuck so that the people do not see it coming. That is how Bianchi did it, although there is not a bats chance in hell that he gets a third term.

I didn’t get the sense that Mr. Simonelli suggested the time change so that people who worked late wouldn’t know what was going on. I sometimes have to work late myself but I would welcome an earlier start to the meetings. I know people who attend the meetings and they’ve frequently stated that they wished they started earlier, especially when there are agenda items that will generate a lot of talk.

Also, Mr. Clairmont was incorrect when he commented about people being confused when PCTV moved the stations. Time Warner Cable is responsible for moving the location of television stations. PCTV did a lot of consumer information around this before it was to hapen and still does so on their web site.

I’m not a fan of Ms Mazzeo. I often got the sense that she was dissenting on issues simply to be the dissenting voice. I know she’s not Kevin Sherman but I thought it wouldv’e been nice if she had thanked people for speaking during open mic like he used to do. I was also a bit surprised when she got Ellen Mary D’Agostino’s name wrong since the woman speaks at almost every council meeting.

I feel bad for the mayor and the council president ,True leadership doesn’t surround themselves with like voices. I think they have possibly learned its A lot easy to sit on the side lines and be a critic of everything and offer no solutions, than to be in the driver seat and finally be responsible for your actions and votes. They are adding more individuals to boards and committees that will Help hide their shortcomings in the leadership area. cause they don’t want all opinions to have a seat at the table .Lincoln put his worst political enemies in positions of power cause he trusted in their abilities and moved above his own feeling for the betterment of the country.I would finally ask them to step up and do something constructive. The mayor has spent his whole career rallying against everyone else’s ideas and offering no ideas of his own and we see that negativity is driving business , families and students out of the city.

I agree that with Levitan that the Republican has the better coverage, and really thorough, up to the minute, live reporting from the courtroom can be found on MassLive beginning at 9 every morning. Don’t know if it is poor reporting skills from the BB reporter, or bad editorship, because essentially he is reporting the same facts as his Springfield counterparts; they just do not have the same ring to them. Is it a sense of immediacy that is missing in the BB, or….? I can’t quite put my finger on it.

It’s simple, Outfox. A photo from Masslive’s gallery shows everyone in the courtroom. Amellinx is not present there. He maintains a live feed too – two posts at 9:30, and one at 3:30.

Could there be a bar getting in the way of Eagle coverage. Otherwise, I’m upset because I believe that this case, sitting dormant for -3 years, is now the only matter of weight. Why is no one on this blog interested or angered? Is it the consequence of addiction to GOB’s? (Somehow Fran F. is more important here than three men murdered in sadistic fashion, and the accomplices and gang remain entrenched in our community. Even the Nilan case is less disturbing than this.

Why it’s simple, Scott. The trial began Monday. A cursory review of the Eagle gives assurance they spent a total of 40 mins in the courtroom, and a few hours digesting the Springfield Republican. And all the rage on this topical site is about two gangsters who offed themselves and Mazzeo’s faux-pas.

Your heart is in the right place, but I believe you miss the particular reason this is the single most powerful story today. Not that a particular appointment to a board, or a missed cue from a councilman is not a huge deal that absolutely must be dissected today as though they are chestnuts at risk of spoiling.

On that note, I turn the floor to Mr. Clairmont who has something important to tell us.

Start your own blog if youre that concerned.

Yes, per what I said above, that may be necessary.

Not much remains there.

it addresses a seamy side of life in the pitts that has taken away quality of life every bit as much as the murders

You mean,. drug induced deaths are new and detract from my quality of life? I grew up with far worse stories of urban decay, starting with Harry V, and these do not detract from my quality of life. Probably because I keep a good distance from urban thugs. As to your equating a vehicular accident with satanic murder, I disagree.
