ARE THREATS AND INTIMIDATION NOW ON THE COUNCIL AGENDA? THREE COUNCILORS ALLEGE ‘YES’

PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 2014) — When the bartender calls the cops in to break up a riot at one of the many dives in town, THE PLANET excuses the yawns that follow. It’s like seeing a Level III sex offender walking free in the downtown, as we did yesterday afternoon on North Street. Ho hum, it’s not news.

There’s also no newsworthiness in how “bottomed out” the bottom-of-the-barrell has gotten in Pittsfield. The city might just as well add some mustard and mayo to its new crime database and eat it as a snack for all the good it will do.

As we’ve seen in our recent explorations of non-profits and the wave of riff-raff immigration into the town (“Give us your druggies, your welfare cheats, and your sex offenders” — words carved into the base of the Pittsfield Statue of Constraint) — and as anyone can see who ventures into the city’s downtown or driven its roads — decency has given way to depravity, responsibility has lost to receivership, hard work has been knocked out by heroin, and hard work has been kayoed by handouts.

Even in the best of times, say Pittsfield in 1958, when the social good finds itself in order and the streets luxuriate in their respectability, good government is hard to come by. However, the cancer that has eaten away dignity and good form in, for, and of the city of Pittsfield makes good government nearly impossible.

A Question: Are Members of the City Council Being Threatened?

Now add to that an additional complicating factor. What if, in addition to all the pressures and difficulties our lawmakers face just day-to-day, they had to put up with threats and intimidation? If so, you could take the word “nearly” out of the previous sentence.

Is that happening now in Pittsfield? It’s unbelievable that we even have to ask this question.

Has the spouse of a city councilor threatened another councilor?

THE PLANET doesn’t allege so. The allegation has been made by Ward 6 councilor John Krol. He says it has happened to him. In fairness to Krol, he did not contact THE PLANET with the charge. We heard about it from councilor-at-large Barry Clairmont, who says that after the Feb. 25 council meeting, Tony Mazzeo — husband of councilor-at-large and city council president Melissa Mazzeo — issued a loud, ominous threat to Krol to “lay off my wife or else.” Ward 5 councilor Jonathan Lothrop and Krol himself confirmed to THE PLANET Clairmont’s account. Krol says Tony made the threat immediately following the meeting, in a corridor leading to back door of city hall.

THE PLANET contacted Tony Mazzeo through his wife to get his reaction to the claim. As of press time, he had not responded. Melissa Mazzeo told us, “I find this whole conversation disturbing.”

Here’s what Clairmont told THE PLANET, on the record, on March 12:

——- 000 ——-

CLAIRMONT: The first time Tony Mazzeo threatened councilors was at Mayor Bianchi’s first victory party [ED. NOTE: THAT WAS IN NOVEMBER 2011].  I arrived before the other three councilors that were accosted.  I went inside and went upstairs to the Mayor’s party.  Councilor Mazzeo was having her victory party downstairs at Mazzeo’s.  I sought out the Mayor, congratulated him, and told him I was looking forward to working with him.

The next thing I know, a friend of mine came inside quickly and told me I had to get out of there as Tony Mazzeo was outside accosting councilors Krol and Lothrop.  Before I could even react to what he was telling me, Tony was right behind him [the friend] saying, “No need to warn him. I’m right here.”

Tony got in my face and told me I had better respect his wife.  He said, “You can disagree with her all you want. Hell, I do all the time, but you better respect her or else.”  He had his finger in my face and chest bumped me twice.  He was yelling very loudly and kept repeating himself.  Don Davis and Pam Malumphy stood next to us and watched.  I think Don wanted to make sure no one threw a punch.  Pam asked us to take it outside.  Tony said, “I’ll do what I want in my restaurant.”  The Mayor and Sheriff Bowler watched from a distance.  I made eye contact with both during the exchange.  This went on for several minutes.

After Tony’s rant, I noticed councilor’s Krol and Lothrop in the room.  They told me a similar exchange had just happened to them outside in the parking lot.  A few days later I learned from President Sherman that Tony came running after him as he was leaving.  President Sherman told me that he could tell Tony was angry and turned to Tony and said, “Tony, have you met my wife?”  That apparently stopped Tony from doing the same to President Sherman.  However, the following day Tony called President Sherman to relay the same message to him.  President Sherman decided to meet Tony at his restaurant, where Tony read him the riot act as well.

All this prior to a single council meeting where I was on the council.

I was expecting an apology from at least Tony and hopefully from Councilor Mazzeo for her husband’s behavior.  None ever came.

After that, Tony started showing up at all the council meetings (which is his right, but he hadn’t done that in the past) and would sit in the back and stare at the four of us with threatening looks.  Eventually (about a year and a half later) he stopped coming regularly.

However, Tony was present at the February 25th meeting.  After the meeting, I noticed him running out the side door in a hurry.  He usually waits for President Mazzeo.  About five minutes later, Councilor Krol left me a voice message telling me that Tony ran after him and told him he better watch it.  John apparently asked Tony what he did he do.  Tony’s reply was that he “better stop talking about my wife.”  John didn’t know what Tony was talking about and asked him to explain.  Tony said, “You know that computer stuff.  Stop saying that stuff on the computer.”  The only thing John did was to answer your questions that you posed to him, Councilor Lothrop, and myself.

I’m not sure the electorate would appreciate the council president’s husband going around threating city councilors when they disagree with her.

I had hoped that the first incident was going to be the last.  Apparently I was wrong.  The real question now is: How many more threats will be coming our way?

——- 000 ——-

When we asked Lothrop about the incident, he said, “It’s true. Krol called me immediately after it happened to warn me about it and inform me of it. I had lingered in the council chambers longer than he did, so by the time I left, both Tony and Krol were both gone. I do have a contemporaneous voicemail from John, who left it within a few minutes of the incident.”

When we asked Krol about the alleged incident, he confirmed that it took place. He told THE PLANET that Tony Mazzeo’s manner was loud and menacing,  with finger pointing and aggressive body language. THE PLANET issued multiple requests to Tony through Melissa for comment prior to publication. As of press time, we hadn’t heard from him. Of course, we will remain open to the Mazzeos as well as anyone else with information or a point of view, should we do a follow-up story.

THE PLANET would argue that an allegation of intimidation of a councilor that is confirmed by two other councilors is a serious issue, one that needs to be raised, explored, exposed, and confronted. For anyone who cares about the possibility of goodness in politics — as we said earlier, always difficult even under the best of conditions — we don’t have to say why.

Bullying Cannot Be Tolerated if It is Occurring

There are many things that aren’t good enough about the way politics is handled in Pittsfield. There are too many secret alliances and turf wars,  too much protectionism for the favored few. Certainly, the low standards by which Podunk plays its little political games has sickened the vast majority of the electorate to the extent that it doesn’t bother to participate (three out of every four voters didn’t vote in most recent election). Along the way to such a corrupt, closed, “It’s who you know not what you know” system, We The People are forced to stomach a lot. Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski draw the line at bullying, however. If that’s happening, it needs to stop.

Sounds like a terroristic threat and should be reported to the police or F.B.I. This behavior is unacceptable and if Mazzeo is so thin skinned she should resign!

When you can’t run on ideas then you run on fear and intimidation. Don Davis with the Mayor and Missy and their loyal herd of sheep when the solicitor got called on the carpet over spectrum. The recent letters in the Eagle trying to make Barry out as a bully for asking the solicitor to explain herself on the flipping more than a pancake on the charter objection. I guess it’s hard for these guys going from professional critics with no alternative solutions to actually having to do something and explain it.
Tony’s behavior only reflects badly on his wife, having a different opinion is democracy, and someone tell him this isn’t Goodfellas .

If there was one person who has never stopped trash talking those who don’t share her or Danny do Little is his wife so I would tell Tony to get a full length mirror and both of them can take a long hard look in it

Dan, I’m surprised. of course there is a professional courtesy to asking MM to relay but you of all people should know, and insist on first person contact. Call Tony directly. Mazzeos number(s) is/are in the book I’m certain.

I do think councilors should respect each other. I do not think it is right for any councilor to try to embarrass another either. Lothrup seems to enjoy it too much when Mazzeo messes up procedure.

She shouldn’t be “messing” up.

I don’t think anyone would dispute this is a vindictive administration but physical threats are a new low. And that the mayor and the sheriff watched the incident?

This is politics Dusty,If ya can handle the heat, give her a job at Mazzeo ‘s. MM was as critical and as venomous as they come just read the Eagle or watch PCTV. And let her own words do all the talking. Then suddenly she and other ladies our too delicate to answer legitimate questions about issues , not personal attacks that seem to be Bianchi & Co. Just look back and see how their own words and actions are as different as night and day.

Dan,

The questions I have are these…

Is President Mazzeo disturbed because the incidents have been brought to light, or is she disturbed at her husbands behavior?

And, will more threats now be coming our way for bringing these incidents to light?

I wouldn’t have even mentioned this to you if it hadn’t happened a second time.

If these allegations of threats are true, then those threatened can pursue legal action to protect themselves (report the threats to the police, maybe get a restraining order, etc.). But – again only if these allegations are true – Councilor Mazzeo should make it clear to her husband that his behavior must stop or she will resign her position as councilor.

Why does Clairmont feel like he needs to protect himself? If he didn’t disrespect others (especially females) he would not have to worry and be “afraid”. Personally, I have much respect for Mr Mazzeo who protected his wife from a man disrespecting her. As you can see when Clairmont is held accountable for his cowardous acts, he portrays himself as the victim.

The City of Pittsfield would be better served if Counselors Clairmont, Lothrup and Krol would get onboard and work together with the rest of the people who work so hard to serve this community. One can disagree, but it should be done with respect and without a deliberate attempt to destroy or publically humiliate another person.

Why should President Mazzeo resign? Perhaps the one who should resign is Barry Clairmont!

AS THE WORLD TURNS (a different Planet) would also argue that an allegation of intimidation of a councilor that is confirmed by two other councilors is a serious issue, IF it was confirmed by any other councilors except the Three Joined at the Hip, Amigos, aka The Opposition Party who are usually stirring the pot together to advance a shared and surreptititious agenda.
How intimidated were Councilors Clairmont, Krol, and Lothrop by their drill instructor when serving their country in the military or training as a first responder ? What ? No Service ?
Dan Valenti; How would you react if you even perceived that Mrs. Planet was being disrespected ? Be honest,we know the culture and neighborhood you grew up in. Remember any Italian importing markets ?

Trust me these are not allegations. They are all true stories..

Sounds as well like it would be a good idea for the council members who were threatened to go as a group of plaintiffs before one of the local judges for the purpose of seeking a restraining order against Mr. Mazzeo, one that would require him to stay at least 500 feet away from any of those councillors.
That would by definition mean Mr. Mazzeo would be in violation of the RO should he attend any Council meeting where any of the threatened councillors were present.
That should make a great headline for the BB: City Councillors Seek RO Against Husband of Council Prez.

I have a simple question for the 3 Amigos 2.0

If you felt your wife was constantly being belittled, spoken down to and insulted at just about every turn, by 3 men, in a workplace environment, and in the case of of the Council Meetings, in full public view, would you demand that it stop or let it slide?

Cause I for one would demand that the offending parties stop and I bet you 3 would too..

Now I don’t know if Mr Mazzeo asked that the shenanigans stop or not but you can’t watch or hear about these Council meetings and not pick up on the snarky, condescending, passive aggressive and pompus attitudes these councilors display towards Melissa Mazzeo on a weekly basis..

And then they have to run to the press claiming that they were threatened? C’mon who is really being skinned here boys?

A word of advice to the 3 Amigos 2.0, you can disagree without being disagreeable or disrespectful…

Stop the BS will ya…Don’t cause no problems and there won’t be no problems…Capeesh??

C’mon Dan, don’t tell me your gonna get all politically correct on this issue? Is Chivalry dead Dan?

And yes it’s me boys, while I respect the time you have put in for service for the City of Pittsfield, I disagree with your methodology, let’s clean it up

Respect is a two-way street. Melmaz needs to show some to others. She was endlessly and rudely haranguing Jim Ruberto while he was mayor, now does the same with those that she perceives have ever been associated with him.
Would she have been any clearer in this past election if she had simply said, “Don’t vote for Clairmont or Krol; they are not on my side. We need a Council that will walk in lockstep with the Mayor and me.”

Really Eric, your post is condescending to both woman and men. It sounds like you have not watched any council meetings since Mazzeo has been on the council. Mazzeo had no problem disrespecting her colleagues, department heads and the previous mayor, now you’re playing the female card? Women have to earn respect, the same way men do by showing respect, they just don’t get it, because they are female. We are not living in the stone age.

TO GMH. The Great One! One on the disrespect issue is when One of the Councilors refers to Melissa as Madame Chair. Although, last meeting he did say Madame President. To me calling the Council President a Chair is inappropriate, and quite frankly somewhat disrespectful, only because, in my opinion, he’s doing it on purpose. When MM switches chairs to go off as president and the vice president fills in for her it should be considered that she is not acting as the president of the Council, therefore calling her madame chair is perfectly fine. If she is not seated in the president’s chair and she is not acting as the president of the Council call her just like you call all other councilmen. Since Missy, Tony and Co. has yet to respond, here are some of the possible options being provided by their Cracker Jack crisis communications team…
A.) Deny that any of these incidents took place. It’s all a conspiracy to discredit Prez Maz and Co. – (i.e. Barry is being mean to me, again, boo-hoo-hoo!)
B.) Acknowledge that these events took place, but they’ve been simply taken out of context. Tony was simply pointing out to these councilors how they can improve the dialogue with his wife. And when Krol was told with a finger in his face, “you better watch your step!” it was simply because the steps to city hall were icy and it was Tony’s truly compassionate nature shining through.
C.) Acknowledgement that these events took place accompanied by a sincere apology and assurance that it won’t happen again and resign from the council (oh, whoops….ummmm, that won’t be happening – what was I thinking??!!)
D.) Do nothing and wait for it to blow over, or Do nothing now, and wait for the next opportunity to “make an example” of Krol, Clairmont and Lothrop (done so successfully in the past to Christine Yon). — (ding, me thinks we have a winner!!!)

With all of the issues Pittsfield faces, we are going into coalitions fighting each other instead of working for the common good.
