PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2015) — In the breach, briefly:

Rosenberg and Guildenstern are Dead — Senate President Stan Rosenberg graced the Berkshires

Banjo Joe? Lionell Atwill? No, it’s State Sen. Pres. Stan Rosenberg.

with his eminence yesterday, all aglow from the radiated rump kissing he received from assorted “players,” wanna-bes, and sycophants. Stan’s a Top Dawg Dem, and when he came to Pittsfield, he looked like pepperoni riding high on a pizza. He rode into town via chariot to meet with what The Boring Broadsheet fawningly called “municipal, education, and business leaders.”

In other words, not you. This was one of Caesar‘s main men coming in for tribute from the hicks. You see, Rosenberg’s on a statewide “listening tour” called The Commonwealth Conversations. Seriously. (Would we make that up?) At these gatherings, he’s led around by the local senator (in this case, our Right Honorable Good Friend Ben Downing) and hears from the area “Haves.”

The “Have Nots” (that’s you, most likely) need not apply, but rest assured: The Windbag from Halitosis Hall “know[s] the challenges you face and the role you have in changes with the economy.” Right. The only “role” The Little Guy has in the local “economy” is wondering where in tarnation it went.

We’ll say this, though, for Stan the Man. He hasn’t been indicted. What’s the hitting streak for Msssachusetts’ Speakers of the House re: indictments? Four in a row? We lose count.

——– 000 ——–

Paradign Shifts and Veggie Platters — Later in the evening, THE PLANET found ourselves in the same room with Rosenberg, Downing, Dan Bianchi, Lady McBeth Bianchi, and others of High Importance and Low Voltage chomping on lomticks of hors doeuvres.

Mayor Dan Bianchi, walking in Lady McB’s shoes … we think.on over-spiced chicken wings and assorted pickies.  A nervous Bianchi kept his distance and Lady McB kept her cool as we were head-locked by any number of local players who wanted to share, uh, a few tips. At least the veggie plate was top notch. Rosenberg made a brief speech that he takes off the shelf on such visits. We tuned out, having heard this a million times: you know, the tales of “paradigm shifts,” “thinking outside the box,” and “synergy.” These weren’t the exact words, but they just as well might have been. As we were saying, the extra sharp cheddar jack went well on the Ritz.

Incidentally, THE PLANET isn’t convinced the man Sen. Downing escorted around town was Senate Pres. Rosenberg. He looked more like ex-city council president Joe Ryan. You know Banjo Joe. He’s the dude who, as city council president in the early 1980s and at the urging of The Boys in the Smoke-Filled Back Room, rammed through a home-rule bill that uncapped Pittsfield’s pensions.

Back then, the top pension a retired municipal employee could get was $35,000. You forgot all about that, now, didn’t you. Today, an oinker slopping at the public trough will rake in 80% of the average of  his or her top three yearly salaries. For example, if the mayor wins re-election, he will collect roughly $76,000 a year courtesy of taxpayers. Hey Banjo Joe, care to name names as you pluck that dreadfully sour version of “Take Me Out to the Poor House?”

If Rosenberg wasn’t Joe Ryan, he could have been B actor Lionell Atwill, one of Universal‘s regulars, monster movie division.

——– 000 ——–

Budget Busters — And Timmy, while you’re at it, set up some tall ones for Our Right Honorable Good Friends Barry Clairmont (at large), Kevin Morandi (Ward 2), and Tony Simonelli (Ward 7) for voting against the mayor’s obese $145-point-something million municipal budget. That’s millions more than last year, and with the tax base continuing to shrink, it means punishingly higher taxes for Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski.

The pain only worsened with the mayor’s accompanying capital spending plan. First time around, he wanted $10 million for capital projects, including $3.5 million for fixing (“reconstructing”) one of the new runways at the city airport. As approved, however, the mayor got more than $11 million. Ah, but what’s another million when you have taxpayers to pound? At least city treasurer and back-door angel Sue Carmel didn’t wear the Sheena of the Jungle black-and-white leopard print dress that she wore during her budget summary.

We thank thee, Lord, for thy simple blessings.

Incidentally, not a peep yet from mayoral challenger (and city clerk) Linda Tyer about this dreadful budget situation, although Waterman Craig Gaetani has made Pittsfield’s spending problem the #1 issue thus far in his long-shot run for the corner office. Bianchi called the FY’16 spending plan “a relatively conservative budget.” Relative to what, TES? Relative to the cash-on-hand at Apple Corp.? Relative to the sums in Unca Scrooge McDuff‘s vault? With friends like that, who needs relatives?

——– 000 ——–

Go West, Numb Nuts — Citizens, assume the position. To man, er, “woman” the helm of the scam that is the Pittsfield Public School Department, Special Education Department, Supt. Jason “JIV” McCandless has tapped Gretchen West. She currently heads the “related services unit” of the PPS — whatever the hell that is, outside of another cushy landing for the “ball players.”

Supt. JIV. Does he like chocolate milk?

Thus spaketh JIV: “The two finalists [the other candidate was Ann Marie Carpenter] presented our cabinet, and in the end, me, with one of the most difficult professional decisions I have ever had to make. [They] represent the very best in public education. Deep expertise. Tireless devotion to students. High expectation for everyone. Compassion for all. You know, just like me.” Okay, the jived jamoke did say those last five words, but you get the drift. He made it sound like he had to choose between Eleanor Roosevelt and Mother Teresa. Citizens, sing praise and hosannas.

Sight unseen, you can take it to the bank that West got the job because she “checked out.” In Pittsfield’s school department, we all know what that means. It means she’s going go with the flow, play deaf and dumb, and do what she’s told by the bosses.

JIV goes on: “In the end this decision was made, as we always try to do, with the bigger picture in mind.”  By “the bigger picture,” JIV must be referring to wasting more taxpayer dollars. What else could it be? The Boring Broadsheet didn’t dare report West’s salary. Orders from on high. THE PLANET can tell you she will be making well north of $100,000 plus benefits. We think. There are two positions listed in the FY16 budget for “Special Ed. Administration” costing $197,645. They aren’t broken out individually.

While were at it, THE PLANET shares the fun of even the most casual look at this larceny sheet that is the PSD budget (for all salaries, add 28% in bennies):

* There are 21 administrative positions at Mercer costing taxpayers $1,578,691. Wasn’t that long ago when the school department administration totalled (1) the superintendent and (2) his secretary. Period.

* There are 12 principals in the department and 9 vice principals costing taxpayers $1,092,349 and $730,981 respectively (certainly not respectfully).

* Want a position of fat that could be cut instantly? How about “Student Services Facilitator?” For FY2012, that position paid $52,075. For the FY16 budget, it pays $67,866, a 30.3 percent raise. And no one in the school department or out knows that a “Student Services Facilitator” does or why such a post is needed.

See what happens when you don’t pay attention.

I see what you mean Dan V. When the public doesn’t pay attention the Pittsfield school system grows into an out of control train wreck. There are assistants to assistants. It grows by leaps and bounds each year as the student population continues to decline. It’s such a scam folks. Will you all be heading to the polls to vote for Craig Gaetani? It seems he is the ONLY ONE talking about reining in the beast that is the Pittsfield School Department.

BCC is a for profit entity. If it was run by the city they could just tac on another $3.5 million to your taxes to repave the sidewalks.

The city would overstaff it and pump tons of your money into it despite the declining student population because that’s how they roll.

Don’t you worry about BCC. I believe the state (our tax dollars) is putting 30+ million into the buildings and grounds. Already put a few million into exterior masonry a couple years ago.

Shelly, This is everywhere in Pittsfield. A Ranch on Cheshire Road abandoned with weeds and grass up to the door. On Newell Street extension same thing. This Mayor is too busy doing the duck and shuffle. You call it blight. The Hess Gas Station on Tyler Street. The former KFC. The disgusting abandoned strip mall on West Housatonic across from McDonalds. The outer Rt. 20 abandoned property. They should be made to demolish these sites or clean them up. Mayor Bianchi can think he’s doing a job good enough to get elected. The Taxpayers are being robbed by this moron.

Where is Newell St. extension? Big Y wanted to put a world class market on West Housy but the Ruberto administration wouldn’t let them.

For about 25 years BCC used to contract most of their building and grounds maintenance and the facility managers were actual civil engineers. BCC had 3 or 4 of their own maintenance people that did paint touch ups and moved furniture. They were union employees. I think it was about 4yrs ago they got a new facility manager who is a big union man. Outside contracts were not renewed and he said he could do all the work with an in house crew, and wait for it, that would be unionized. He also said he would hire some of the contracted workers. they hired 1. The laziest one of all. The first question was will you join the union? All but one said no. So now you have about a dozen people doing what 30 did.

Stan Rosenberg said he wants to run for U.S. Congress. Ben Downing said he wanted to run for U.S. Senator. I don’t believe Pittsfield politics will help them achieve their aspirations for high political office. I read that the Massachusetts state budget is not going to be passed on time by July 1st, 2015. I wonder how big the budget deficit is going to be this year? Probably over one billion dollars!

They both could run on the platform that they drove jobs and people out of Massachusetts and lost a congressional seat.

Stan Rosenberg was the point man for casino gambling in Massachusetts. I wonder if he will become a corporate executive/lobbyist for the casino industry after he retires from politics?

This just in:

Democrats now what to ban Gone with the wind.
Not a joke.
http://www.newsforage.com/2015/06/democrats-now-want-to-ban-gone-with.html

Also, here is a quote from Abraham Lincoln himself:
“I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races [applause]: that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I, as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” — Reply by Abraham Lincoln to Stephen A. Douglas in the first joint debate, Ottowa, IL; 21 Aug 1858

Racist? Sure is.

Also, they want Hamilton’s image off the ten dollar bill.
They want Andrew Jackson off the $20

Blacks are offended by calling George Washington the father of this country because he was a slave owner.

Lincoln was a tool of the railroads and in their pockets. He wanted to deport all black people to South America or Liberia. He didn’t give a whit about slavery. He invaded the south because his railroad cronies and other northern business interests didn’t want the south to trade with other countries without paying high tariffs…..the tariffs were a great source of the corporate welfare he dolled out to the railroads.

More school unions want more money. Sounds like a broken record. Other people elsewhere make more money so we want more money.

My suggestion? MOVE And take most of the over paid administration people with you unless of course they want to take a pay cut to finance your raises. Ha Ha

I am so sick of hearing this argument to gain a pay increase. This is a poor city loaded with low income jobs and non tax paying non profits and the burden on the people who are trying to pay their fair share is ridiculous. It is becoming impossible to be an aging home owner which is a good part of the tax base right now. This city is chewing off its own leg.

Read my comments on that in the Paper. You are correct Dusty, move! The ONLY measure of whether they are underpaid is how difficult it is to fill the positions at the current rate. My bet is, at thise wages they have candidates lined up…but the average person stays in the job 17.5 years! So thet probably don’t open up much. That union’s arguements hold zero water!

Got to give those teachers union’s credit. They push for full day K. In 2000 25% of schools in MA. had it. Now 89% of schools are full day. Next on there agenda full day pre K. 4 of Pittsfield schools have that now. New agenda, pushing legislation requiring students to stay in school until there 18. They know population is shrinking. Doing everything in there power to feed the pig.

See front page (b) eagle. New spec. director named. Jake claims had to sweat bullets in order to make decision. please send him some sweat rags, the poor guy. lets give him an even bigger salary as this is very very hard work. Also he claims it takes everything out of him to make a decision for a snow day in the winter. GIVE US A BREAK -JAKE. Let me give you a real life or death decision–Seeing a viet cong soldier and having to decide whether to blow him away or let him go to protect your fellow soldiers–who might bee slaughtered by giving away your position and facing a blood bath. YOU are paid very handsomely
we soldiers were paid peanuts and our job was to insure your rights. As superintendent can make a big difference in the life of city taxpayers and suggest you start thinking about them who are struggling to put food on the table while you and your ilk are eating cavier and lobsters and enjoying it in a fine restaurant.

ANOTHER TOPIC IN EAGLE TODAY- CLERICAL WORKERS SEEK WAGE HIKE IN SCHOOL DEPT. I agree with dusty the group should go after the school admin, and professional ranks to give up some of their botty and give it to the clerical workers. LORI REUSS, a clerical worker said it best when she stated–the clerical workers are the back bone of all schools and they perform all duties from a-z. I agree wholeheartedly with her as that was how it was when I was a teacher. This is why I am going to thin out the school admin. and professionals as it is true that these clerical workers are the backbone of education. After all school administrators are clerical workers with degrees in education, the easiest area to get a degree, who major in these fields then come to the feeding trough in every city in America and are breaking everyone elses back. When I become mayor I will make significant -changes here as I know all about the schools and I will try to initiate things I know will work better than they are now—CRAIG

I just returned from school dept admin office and made the following requests–1-degree held by every teacher and administrator. 2- area of state certification of all class room personell teaching the (CHILDREN). 3 how many class room teachers are there teaching courses that they are not certified in. This is an abused area where the gob net work can place their friends and relatives who have degrees in areas such as basket weaving wine making and a whole slew of other degrees that they could never find a place to work in the private sector. WITH OUT KNOWING I WOULD PREDICT THAT OVER TWENTY PERCENT OF EVERY COURSE BEING TAUGHT IS BEING TAUGHT BY TEACHERS WHO ARE NOT CERTIFIEDIN THE AREA THEY ARE TEACHING IN.-The results are going to shock us. Again this is another area that has been a sore spot with me for over 30 years that I plan to address when I am mayor –CRAIG

Finally–where were all of you when I was pleading your case at the city budget hearing Tuesday night? I was there all by myself and was the only one who spoke against the budget and recommended areas where huge dollars could be saved .The majority of you are part of the problem we have in Pittsfield. you bitch and complain daily on this site and when someone like me goes out to try to address your complaints, you throw dirt in my face. TO THOSE OF YOU ON THE PLANET WHO HAVE SHOWED ME ENCOURAGEMENT BELIEVE ME I KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I AM VERY APPRECIATIVE. MANY OF YOU OUT THERE YOU CAN SEE I AM NOT AFRAID TO CONFRONT ANYONE LIKE I AM CONFRONTING YOU NOW. I AM A STRAIGHT SHOOTER AND I AM GIVING YOU SOME CRITISM NOW– THAT YOU MUST GET INVOLVED. I CAN NOT WIN THIS ELECTION WITHOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO ARE DISGUSTED WITH WHAT WE HAVE NOW. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND DO SOMETHING. AS DAN SAID APATHY WILL KILL US EVERY TIME. IM DOING MY PART.I HAVE JUST SCOLDED YOU AND ITS OVER. NOW LETS GET BACK TO WINING THIS ELECTION–VERY SINCERELY CRAIG.
