PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

Second of Two Parts

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 2016) — The “New” BB’s Monday story on the discovery of pollution and ledge problems at the construction site of the “new” Taconic High School by Jim Therrien said the money to cover the extra costs would come out of the city’s “contingency fund.” It then went on to contain this paragraph: “While disappointing and costly, the amounts involved are not out of line with the 30 to 35 percent of the average contingency fund for such a project that goes for unanticipated subsurface work, the officials said.”

Not out of line? What officials? Citing what data? There were obvious follow-up questions to this outright claim that Therrien either asked or did not. If he did not, he didn’t do his job. If he did, included the responses in his piece, and they were edited out, the editor didn’t do the job. Either way, if you read between the lines, The BB story tried hard to downplay the seriousness of this development.

Our sources tell a different story.

“They’re low-balling the added cost,” a site source told THE PLANET. “The soil and ledge problems will add millions. They aren’t even at the beginning of what’s in the ground.”

The project’s design consultant told The BB soil contained construction debris, asphalt, and tar “that are not considered hazardous.” The story says nothing about PCBs or other industrial toxins that have been found in the soil. Instead, it talks about “veins of soil unsuitable to build upon.” What does that mean?

“It likely refers to industrial pollutants,” said another of THE PLANET’s THS construction sources. “I’m not sure it’s all PCBs, although there are PCBs in the ground there.” The source said that this spring, “several” badly decomposed barrels were uncovered. Tests showed what the source called “industrial toxins … nasty, nasty stuff.”

Buried in The BB story is this line: “Other spots of underground contamination or debris on the building site of the new school also are being investigated or have been excavated.” One of our sources translated: “They’re looking for more disintegrated barrels and pockets or pools of [contaminants]. [The barrels are] hard to find and recognize. They were probably buried in the 50s and 60s. What happens is that the metal [of the barrels] just disintegrates. You have the toxins eating away from the inside and nature from the outside. All you have left are rims and bottoms.”

We asked about “construction debris” found in the ground. Sources said they believed if was from construction of the current high school, but, more problematically, some of it was “older than that. This is speculation, but I’d say this is material trucked here long ago by GE.”

*  *  *  *  *

If you read The BB article to the bitter end, you also find this final paragraph: “Other recent test borings around the current school also detected construction debris, but it remains unclear at this point what will be required to deal with those issues as those areas will be used for new athletic fields and won’t require foundation work.”

Our source: “The ground is practically radioactive. … The problems here are just beginning.” Would city or construction officials be honest about what they find? “I don’t believe they will. They haven’t until now. Why would they change?”

We contacted the mayor’s office yesterday for comment. Mayor Linda Tyer said: “I was briefed when the debris was first discovered and then recently received a more comprehensive report describing construction debris, asphalt and tar. I am not aware of anything more than that.”

*  *  *  *  *

We should add that THE PLANET has received no official confirmation of the information revealed by our sources. However, it seems the deeper they get into this project, the more it becomes apparent why none of your “leaders” wanted you to have a say. Why, if you had been allowed to vote on the THS project after the tough questions had been asked and answered, you might have turned it down. What would The Suits have done then? How would they have made good on all their promises?

Knock down Crosby and build a 1st class high scool over lookin downtown..mount greylock…october mountain…south mountain and all 40 usable acres very close to the downtown.
The Crosby property is the most beautiful piece of property in the city…crosby is 10 years older than taconic or continue building on a toxic dump.

OR…admit we never needed one in the first place and cut the taxpayers losses. But that might upset all the kickback recipients.

Uh, if there were any.

Anybody connected to this project that is complicit in any coverup may see criminal charges down the line. I would like to see federal, not state, oversight on the matter.

And so the “economic engine” has begun to chug. Has anyone got a drone they can fly over and take some pictures? They may be wroth a lot of money at some point.

Yon…Amuso….Taylor and Tyer can now take credit for exposing Pittsfield student s from Allendale sham all the way through Taconic .Walmart understands what Yon Taylor Tyer Amuso do not.Stop the construction of the building before people stop paying their incredible tax bill in hkomes that continue to lose value.

The court hearing on the Taconic project is August 10th. Will the recent stories influence what the court does?

Pittsfield needs to admit its dumb before it can stop doing dumb.Anybody …..yon will talk about courage to build and people will thank each other….Im getting the impression Dr Mccandless is not understanding learning disabilities and children exposed at Allendale and now Taconic.

I don’t think that addresses all of the GE retirees and the first generation of adult children with chemical induced mental impairments.

At least such expenses are justified, remember they added several million in cosmetic and “Barbie Dream School” features to the design which are too fancy for the $40 billion state budget, so the trillionaire taxpayers of Pittsfield are covering them 100%.

So…why not make the whole barrell out of whatever the rims and bottoms are made of?

Not sure if this is meant to be funny or serious but its actually a good question. I know the answer because my uncle was a metal worker all his life. Barrel rims and bottoms are made of reinforced material. Covers are rimmed because they are (were) usually moved by forklift. Bottoms had to bear all the weight. I also herd from one of the GE oldtimers that they used to put waste into any empty barrels not barrels meant for that purpose.

Opening up this toxic dump site exposes everyone living near to high levels if toxic waste. Thus endangering their lives. The powers that be (the suits), can lie and cover up the truth from the people, but not the EPA.

The EPA needs to be called in here to assess the damages. If they investigate, the entire project may get shut down. The site may be too toxic for human use.

Any EPA documentation should be accessable through the freedom of information act. The public can be informed of the hazardous conditions from there. Do not believe city or school officials as they will just try to sweep it under the school.

Future Taconic students may have extreme health issues in the future. They denied the people a vote. Then shoved it down our throats with an illegal council vote as some of the councilors had a conflict of interest (such as a stake in a radio show). They lied about the cost. Not even one brick laid yet.

If all this toxic waste has been there all these years, what extent of damage has it already done to students and faculty over the decades?

Shouldn’t GE pay for this and not the taxpayers.
Contingency fund? Cough it up.

Get the EPA out there. They will get the answers.

The Bouvier, Krol, Yon selling points were someone else would get the Funding if we didn’t want the School …or the cost to refurbish would be the same funding and we would get a new school. No mention of this kind of problem, was there a chance they knew, of course, but the comfort zone would be take it out of contingency and take away the ‘extra’. Code for, we ‘ve got you covered.

I hope John Krol is much more responsible with the his personal budget than he is with the cities budget. His family will be homeless with his spending habits. He is a progessive to the nth degree. He has the budgetary sense of a junkie. Spend everything you can get your hands on then start stealing.
He seems to be an idol of White + Caccamo. Marchetti should step down he was the leader of the We Will Not Cut Gang!!

They are very busy working on new amendments to the anti- tobacco regulations and cannot be bothered with such mundane issues as an opioid crisis that is taking more city young people than those moving out, non-sanitary restaurants putting people in the hospital or contaminated soil that will not allow one citizen to escape without cancer. Besides, most of them-including the “Health Director”-don’t even live in the city. Well, except those in the pocket of BHS.

remember, there is one BOH member whose sole raison d’etre is to ban cigarette sales. Mind you, she lives in Lanseborough – yet she is not advocating this in her town, just ours. Meanwhile, landlords let their properties get run down and go to see – and she is silent when code enforcement is mentioned.

This just in:

The FBI will Not be investigating the DNC, Debbie Wasserman Shultz or the Hillary Clinton campaign for collusion, election fraud in the stealing of the election.
No reasonable prosecutor would do such a thing.

They are however investigating Vladamir Putin and the Trump campaign for releasing the damning DNC emails exposing the corruption. That’s a federal offense.

The real problem here is not the corruption but the exposing of the corruption. Remember Edward Snowden is on the FBI ten most list not or corruption but for exposing the corruption.

Kill the messenger. Punish those who expose the corruption.
Its a free country….right?

And, right in the middle of the City’s monetary crisis, not to mention the increase in criminal activity, the focus is on Pittsfield banning circuses. So Pittsfield bans circuses, Dalton has them. Pittsfield peeps go to Dalton! Dalton enjoys the permit fees & Pittsfield people enjoy the circus! Dalton residents enjoy moderate income for letting people park on their lawns!
The problem isn’t solved, but the naysayers can proudly do the cock walk and say “Looky what we did! We banned circuses from a dying City!”
Whadda bragging right!

In the ibershires article McCandless says that what they found was exactly what they expected to find. That does not quite jive with what others are saying. He should run for political office when his tour with the school dept is up…. as he is quite a spin meister although he may have to take a pay cut.

They say there is no PCBs. But these people have lied so much that no one believes anything they say anymore. If there were PCBs they would not tell you that is for sure. Why would they put muzzles on all the workers if they did not have anything to hide????

Sooner or later one of these workers will sell their story to a Tv station or real newspaper and make themselves some money. And I hope they are smart enough to be taking pictures now with their cell phones. Also, if they get fired they can take their employer to court and sue for all back wages and punitive damages.
