WITHER NEWSPAPERS? … ‘LAST TANGO’ GETS ALL PCd UP … THE PITTSFIELD TRAGEDY THAT NEVER WAS

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, 75th ANNIVERSARY OF PEARL HARBOR ATTACK) — For the first century, newspapers in America were essentially political screeds. This included emptying both chambers upon adversaries who were lied about, libeled, and labeled. The notion of objective “news” taking precedence over commentary and pamphleteering came in the industry’s second century. Papers made their money by circulation.

In the Victorian Era (mid 1800s to the beginning of the 20th century), visionary publishers and editors (Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, Horace Greeley) revolutionized the body and soul of newspapers, especially metro dailies. Advertising revenue replaced circulation as a newspaper’s main money source. Firsts included sports and women’s sections, full business coverage, the op-ed page, star columnists, more pictures and art, better typography, comics, illustrated supplements, and extras. The swing to advertising revenue led to coverage of real estate coverage, classified ads (especially employment), as well as sections on food and travel (including cars) — and tamer content meant to keep advertiser’s happy.

That model held until the widespread use of the Internet. Today, online media and content threatens the very existence of what we call a “newspaper.” It’s clear that young people rarely, if ever, pick up a physical paper. They instead go online to their ever smaller, ever-portable devices. The news cycle is 84,600 second each and every day.

In this frantic environment, newspapers haven’t figured the transition. The online dilemma: Offer free content and eat production costs. Charge for content, on the other hand, and ask people to pay for something they expect for free.

The Berkshire Eagle, a.k.a., The Boring Broadsheet, is not alone in being horned on the points of this dilemma. The paper has hired a new publisher, Alan English. He’s a newspaper guy. The paper also has freshened its appearance to make the paper easier on the eyes. These are positive developments. Content, though, lags far behind.

Being at heart a “newspaper guy,” THE PLANET has given much thought to solving this quandary. Perhaps at some point we shall share the specific formula for newspaper success. For now, let’s leave it at this: The key driver must be content, accent on the first syllable. Content drives circulation. Circlation drives ad revenue. When the accent is on the second syllable, as in content — the condition for way too long at The BB — a newspaper gets complacent, lazy. That won’t work in today’s hyper competitive news market — even if you’re the only local print daily in town.

PC Police Cuff Bertolucci’s Masterpiece

SCHNEIDER and BRANDO in “Last Tango” (PHOTO Universal Pictures)

Forty four years ago, Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci released his masterpiece, Last Tango in Paris. The film earned Bertolucci an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and Marlon Brando a nod for Best Actor. Two score and four years is enough time to bury even a masterpiece, however. The film made news last week with the posthumous quotes of Brando’s then-20-year-old costar, Maria Schneider. The remarks were unearthed in a newly discovered interview with the late Bertolucci.

Tinsel news outlets quoted Schneider on the film’s “pass the butter” sex scene.

“‘Marlon said to me: “Maria, don’t worry, it’s just a movie,” but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears. … I felt very sad because I was treated like a sex symbol.  I wanted to be recognized as an actress and the whole scandal and aftermath of the film turned me a little crazy and I had a breakdown.'”

This is what the amped up and magnified “war between the sexes” has produced: False movie acting memories!

It’s a film, for caper’s sake!! You were acting!!! It wasn’t real!!!!

Brando was ACTING. Schneider willingly signed on at a lucrative price to appear in a psychological drama the script made clear would deal frankly with the heavy mental cost of anonymous sex. She was cast as the young female lead precisely because of her sexuality.

“The movie breakthrough has finally come,” wrote Pauline Kael of the film after its release. “Bertolucci and Brando have altered the face of an art form.”

Instead, in today’s overheated, politically correct environment, even art is not safe. The PC Police co-opted a tiny excerpt of a forgotten interview and hammered the square film frames into a round wastebasket, the one labeled, “All Men Are Bad.”

That should not be good enough for a cultured, literate, art-loving nation.

Newberry’s and the Fire That Never Started

The Central Block. (PHOTO: McLean Realtors)

Speaking of artists, the tragic warehouse blaze in Oakland reminded THE PLANET of a fire in Pittsfield that never happened, thankfully.

Like Oakland’s “Ghose Ship” warehouse, prior to its remodeling into the Central Block, Pittsfield’s old Newberry Building housed — legally and otherwise — artists, actors, musicians, muses, misfits, beats, deadbeats, and an assortment of colorful moochers, magicians, and madmen.

Like the “Ghost Ship,” Newsberry’s was overcrowded, horribly out of code, and replete with a tangle of extension cords, faulty electricity, nearly non-existent sanitation, tons of dried wood, plenty of smokers and drug users, and not enough exits.

The Oakland fire is one of the deadliest in California history. Pittsfield could have had one years ago. We dodged that flame, somehow. Thank God or Bog or whomever or whatever one thanks for alternate realities that could have happened but never did.

I fully agree that CONTENT would be the key driver to readership. I would also agree that if CONTENT is influenced, either by editing or out right censorship, by the government or special interests, then faith in the paper will lag as well as the customer base.

The Berkshire Eagle could be a huge success but it hobbles itself by trying to serve two masters.

Back in the 1970s a decision was made to buy up newspapers consolidate expenses and reduce news rooms.Control the news control the public.Anytime you have a president controlling news from a twitter account your done.A president lacking in self esteem is scary.Newspaper should take Trumps condition and absolutely attack his weakness until he gets stronger dealing with press coverage.
The Donald needs to understand hes not in charge of the press. He had no problem asking for Obamas birth certificate in the press.Trump loved every story started by him that Obama was illegitimate.

Dan,

You are right, we did avoid an Oakland situation with the old Newberry’s building.

How did we avoid it? With one of those public/private partnerships everyone bitches about. A TIF and loans. Now the building is paying full real estate taxes, and has been for years. It’s an asset for the city. But without that partnership, we could have had an Oakland situation.

If one of your readers who bitches about these partnerships realizes they can work, ill be happy.

My Dad wasn’t at Pearl Harbor but in the trenches and was wounded by a German from behind, he was in the infantry but actually air support. When he came home he went to work with a disability caused by the action, and had a thirty plus year career. Fortunately he never suffered some of the serious problems that Veterans go through today that lead to other problems like homelessness or alcoholism, drugs…God Bless Our Veterans.

Hey! yeh, Hey!, Dancing, co-habitating, pillow talking bear. Seniors who are not part of the municipal in-crowd, received their 2017 social security retirement increase notice yesterday.
It is a 0.3% increase or a monthly step raise of $3.00, that’s three dollars a month for the average senior recipient.
Can you grasp this ??? Put your CPA number crunching mind in harmony with this number. Do you think Taxing Tyer and her RAT (Raise All Taxes) Pack are sensitive to the reality of a growing senior population ?
Maybe you think the present will last forever. Get a clue Bear Boy, it may take awhile, but Karma is coming, even to the current controlling RAT Pack.

just give all the money from SS back and make the seniors pay for Medicare instead of the rest of us subsidizing their insurance because they were too stupid to save up for when they couldn’t work anymore.

Both programs are federal overreach and should be rescinded with Obamacare.

On that note and being fair, no where did anyone hear,( could be wrong) but hear, the current Mayor would not raise taxes, if correct, I thought she stated she was a Progressive, quite frankly,I’ll give her six months more before I Grade Her. Amanda,

I have narrowed it down to one of three people friendly too or in the last administration, or their spouse.

Thank you for your kind words.

You are correct concerning the Mayor, she did state she was a progressive, never said she was going to cut taxes, or raise them for that matter. She did say would bolster the police department, and kept that promise.

Many here would like to see the school budget cut as an offset to the increase in police. I get that, and to some level could make the arguement for you. The Mayor doesn’t see it that way.

Stayed tuned, good things are a coming.

I totally agree with you I, Seymour Taxes. I have relatives who received that same $3.00 increase. They are NOT jumping for joy. This city is made up of a majority of people who are seniors. Their needs are NOT being addressed by this administration or previous administrations. Seniors in this city need to make sure they get to the polls to outvote the school employees and others who are happy with the way things are since they are financially happy. Seniors need to drain the swamp here in Pittsfield.

Why do the editors hide, or are they too ashamed, to pen their names to the drivel they compose?

Letters to these phantoms running the Parrot, must be submitted with several sources of verification as to ones identity. Yet these posers hide.

Why is that?

And, yes I’ve submitted letters with all my info to the Parrot.

Again, the editorial board writes the editorials. It is a shared responsibility even if one individual physically writes the opinion. Very simple concept to grasp. Standard across newspapers.

LA Times: Editorial Board
NY Post: Editorial Board
Boston Globe: Editorial Board
The Guardian: Editorial Board
The Cleveland Plain Dealer: Editorial Board

This is industry standard practice.

Part of the reason editorials are not signed is because they are often not actually written by the editorial staff. Much of it comes from city hall or special interests and they sure as hell don’t want their names out there making it obvious that they are pushing for something that benefits themselves.

And a piece unsigned coming from the head of a newspaper? Oh my god it must be coming from a super intelligent source that knows what is best for the masses right? More likely some piece promoting an agenda for a special interest with a kickback on the burner.

I disagree with this administration’s handling of some issues, but I don’t think Ms. Tyer is “a woman thought to have evil magic powers and popularly depicted as wearing a black cloak and pointed hat, and flying on a broomstick.” which is the definition of a witch.

A progressive mayor in a city with no financial discipline will in fact give it the discipline it needs to save itself. The School are a financial monster….Purchasing agent Superintendent Behnke has 8 people working for her…someone needs to ask her what she does and what 8 other people do for her.Civil Service dept has only 19 people in the entire office running the state.

Most politicians by nature are a cowering bunch. They did not get into the job to do the hard work of serving the tax payer but rather to do the bidding of special interests who will reward them. For many of them it was not even their own idea to run for office. They were told that the campaign work would be done for them and then they would be told what to say and how to vote. And they do not need to do the hard work because the special interests are telling them what to do much of the time. If they have the gift of gab and can blow smoke up the low information voters ass they are good to go. It is basically a charade with the people who benefit most from the bloated budget pulling the strings from behind the curtain.

Do you think Paul Ryan likes agreeing with every dumb thing Trump does? Of course not. But like many politicians he has no backbone and disagreeing with Trump is not good for his PERSONAL agenda.

The Pittsfield School Department does not have the intelligence to consolidate. They do not respect the people of Pittsfield who have over funded them for many years.Mayor Tyer did not run to cut taxes and will not do it.
Admittedly it would take political guts of which we have never been offered.I do believe Melissa Mazzeo has the smarts to ask the schools to plan a consolidation.I think her support for everything schools allows her the gravitas to have Behnke stop hiring .
The mayor must meet all principles and tell them to figure out a way to educate with less not more not the same level funds but less or be fired for insubordination.

A ridiculous person writes a letter to the eagle saying that the media feels bad that they have let the public down in the presidential election. She writes that she gets her news from NPR, the New York Times and the AP if that tells you anything. That’s like people on this board accusing me of only watching FOX news (which isn’t true. I listen to many different news sources). The letter writer hopes that God will bless America in this time of crisis since Hillary didn’t get elected.

The BB letter writer is a perfect example of locals in this area who really do only listen to progressive news sources and they really have no clue that for the past 8 years the media did nothing to criticize Obama on any of his decisions, but liberals are all upset because they think Donald Trump is telling the media not to criticize him. No, instead Trump is telling the media to tell the truth, something that this progressive media finds very challenging. The media now says it will be the watchdog for the public now that a Republican is in office, something they didn’t bother to do when a Democrat was in office.
