SPECTRUM & TYER: HOW PITTSFIELD CABLE WENT FROM BAD TO WORSE

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY AUG. 9, 2017) — Corporate rates hikes, whether millimetrical or magnitudinal, always rankle the rank and file. That occurs with good reason, especially when the increase coincides with a loss or degradation of service. Case in point, the recent switch in local cable from Time Warner to Spectrum.

The change came with the usual promises of better service, more channels, and complimentary continental breakfast. The reality, as bedraggled prisoners of Big Bro cable have attested in droves, delivered the opposite. You can blame Spectrum if you wish, but you would best to finger the feckless gaggle of feral phonies that as an asinine aggregate consist of local politicians, city, state, and federal.

Capt. Linda Tyer, commanding H.M.S. The Good Ship Lollipop in a brand new sailor’s suit (from the Shirley Temple line), did her part by disbanding Pittsfield’s moribund cable commission. The Lovely Linda got her orders not from CINCPAC but from the City Democratic Committee, who got them from the bosses in Boston, who got then from Richie Neal, who got them from Elizabeth Warren. … or a chain of evidence bearing a reasonable facsimile therof.

THE PLANET shall not go into the avalanche of complaints from customers. We only have our own limited anecdotes of evidence, horror stories such as the friend who has had to call Spectrum every month since the switchover because of one glitch or the other involving TV, internet, and who knows what else. We also have received missives from customers who, having no other place to turn, have turned to us.

When you have to come to the Fortress for problems with your cable, you know the politicians have spit the bit. We supply a sympathetic ear, sometimes make a call or two, but there’s not much to be done when the company has a monopoly. The lack of competition combined with the carelessness of your allegedly “go to” guys (mayor, state reps, congressional reps) makes up a combination almost as lethal as Kim Jung Un and nukes (coming soon to a region near you).

Word from spies has it that in a series of meetings go up the political food chain, Spectrum outlined its plans, including its worse-than-arbitrary channel line-ups, dictated terms, and the pols — your “leaders” — caved on every demand.

So where does the blame lie? Or perhaps “blame” isn’t the right term. How about “complicity?” Much better, since it supplies just the amount of “getting in bed together” aspect. Not with Warren or Neal. They’re on the federal level, with much bigger fish to ignore than cable service in Podunk, Mass. Not even with the local reps, who warm the back bench in Boston. That brings us locally local, o the office of mayor.

Tyer made her statement when she dissolved the cable commission. She flat-out, plain, jut didn’t care. Granted, that board had not me since forever and took little interest in how Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski were, with every cable contract, steam rolled by the greed and carelessness of Time Warner and now Spectrum. A true leader, however, would have:

  1. Declared that the cable situation wasn’t satisfactory
  2. Declared that there would be changes
  3. Revamped the cable commission
  4. Ordered it to life
  5. With the insistence that, for this one time at least, someone in power give two spits about The Little Guy.

Instead, Tyer rolled over, ate crepe suzettes in Montreal, and quaffed $12 lattes in Vail.

“Let ’em eat Twinkies.”

In past years, with a municipal election coming, you would have a chance to make a mayoral statement at the ballot box. Not this year. Pittsfield, you’re stuck with a four-year mayor.

Carry on.

We will get a candidate groomed by local politicians and Boston to take her place. Melissa Mazzeo maybe who we know is a hard line Progressive. Things never change in Pittsfield. Different face, but same failed Progressive policies.

Reply to Pat: You may be right, but I am trying to change those things. I filed my opposition to Dennis Lee Powel Nomination signatures because 80–85% of them written by the same person. Today, August10, at 3:30 pm in City Council Chambers they finally allowed me to speak more than 3 min:)) presenting my opposition, which I did specifying the same handwriting on all 11 pages. I even named specific lines and words and even letters, but all my oppostion was denied… You can see it on PCTV. I asked them to hire MA licensed forensic expert, but they denied it too and called me shameless person.–words of attorney William who was the member of Investigation committee today. Dennis Powel said that I insulted him by opposing his Nomination signatures which he collected in Berkshire Community College–inside the building… Another Committee member –a woman, said that they should deny my opposition because I specified the same handwriting in address lines, but not in signature lines!!! Is she sane?
Any line on Nomination signature papers must be written by person who provides signature, including person’s address.
…We need to combat them by creating Independent/Republican comuter data base with our names, addresses and emails, so we can collect 1500 or 3000 signatures for city Referendum in One day! We should ne able to overthroug the Queen easily, if our numbers are larger than their–there are only 6000 of them!!!

I don’t want the government running the cable system but it would be nice to have a board or commission advocate for those who buy services that require cable to run through publicly owned streets and. If Cable companies want to bypass the use of city property to run their lines they should convert to satellite delivery.

I don’t want government running the cable company just as I don’t want the federal government involved in healthcare, but oversight of companies not forming monopolies would be a good government watchdog role. Competition is a good thing in business.

Charter bought time warner and made it go away. If anything, the city should stop taxing its residents to provide public access cable.

  9. That girl
    August 9, 2017 at 10:26 am #

Time Warner was simply a cable and wifi provider. Since Spectrum came in, I have built personal relationships with their customer service providers. I don’t know if that was their intention or not. I suppose they need their jobs. I have never had to call a company more in my life. At least once a month, and forget it if it snows. Then I’m on the phone for a while.
Not to mention having to unplug my router on a regular basis. You can’t tell me Tyer has it any easier.
I know it’s supposed to be an unnecessary luxury, so we should just quit our whining, right?

  10. B
    August 9, 2017 at 11:04 am #

Time Warner was bought by Spectrum, so service really has not changed. The Pittsfield cable commision had not met in years. In the past it had been looked at to see if we could get rid of Time Warner. No cable company was willing to come to Pittsfield because TWC owns all the equipment and no company could afford to buy them out. I have called other cable compiles myself to see if they would be willing to come to Pittsfield. No one would. This has been going on for decades so why are you blaming our current mayor. Shame on you. Blame TWC.

    Trump remarks were improvised.

    • Pat
      August 9, 2017 at 12:06 pm #

Trump’s remarks were not improvised. They were planned and said intentionally. Trump wants to try something different than his placating predecessors who only wanted to talk about diplomatic solutions while North Korea continued to stockpile and improve their delivery system for nuclear weapons. Trump is talking provocatively to put the pressure on China to DO SOMETHING about North Korea. If China thinks the United States is going to just keep talking for the next 4 years and do nothing then China will continue to let North Korea run wild. If China thinks we are serious, they may act to rein in North Korea. China has it within its power to do so. This is giving away Trump’s game plan, but since we have a liberal media that wants to put down Trump at every turn, we have to constantly give away our strategy which is dangerous for all of us. Thank you liberal media and Progressives.

Do Berkshire County residents think that just because for now they are safe from a nuclear strike from North Korea that they don’t have to worry about the threat from North Korea? Because even New York City is now within range of a first strike from North Korea so not very far away from Berkshire County. Something different HAS to be done.

The Pittsfield Cable Commission would not have been able to help out with issues with Spectrum. I wish other useless gov’t departments would find the same demise – Downtown Inc comes to mind. And to call Spectrum a monopoly is inaccurate. With Dish, Directv, satellite internet, Verizon DSL there are many other options out there. This isn’t 1970 after all.
Blaming the mayor on any of this is silly. We want smaller, more efficient govt not more.

I am relieved not o have a son or daughter serving in south Korea right now. Trump may get up to 28,000 of our troops killed just by shooting off his big ignorant mouth. He may succeed in obliterating North Korea but there will be many American families mourning the senseless loss of their loved ones. Not to mention god knows how many Korean civilians. But as long as their names are not Donald, Eric or Ivanka why should he care?

    • Pat
      August 9, 2017 at 4:34 pm #

Dusty since you are obviously an expert on the subject what is your solution for protecting the United States from North Korean threats of nuclear attacks?

Trump’s big ignorant mouth was actually a strategy to try to get China to rein in North Korea by frightening them into thinking we are serious about war. Then perhaps if China believed it was really going to happen they would rein in North Korea. If you watched news other than CNN and MSNBC you would be better informed. Stop listening to one sided news coverage otherwise you will truly believe everything the liberal media tells you which is what they are counting on. CNN and MSNBC are 24/7 talking about how Trump is worse than Hitler. They count on gullible easily influenced people who do not think for themselves to believe whatever they say.

I took a deep breath and turned on MSNBC this morning. Unlike anti-Trump people on this board I listen to lots of different news stations to see what is being said. Very interesting that after spending 5 minutes putting down Trump for his statement about “fire and fury” the very learned guest professor said that Trump was RIGHT to be putting pressure on China to rein in North Korea. In order to put pressure on China, Trump has to convince that country that he means business, hence the tough language.

Did you hear that anti-Trump people? One of your own on one of you favorite stations said that TRUMP IS RIGHT.

They also had a journalist who had lived in North Korea and described what it’s like. “Like no place on Earth”, she said and she didn’t mean that in a good way. Visitors walk around with “minders” who show you only what the government wants you to see. The beliefs of the people are in lockstep with the government. Whether they choose to do this or are frightened to death into doing this she couldn’t say. I’m not a psychologist she said.

China does not want anything bad to happen to the USA. They have a lot tied up in the USA and we are their best customer. If the USA goes down, so goes China. There is the pressure, not words.

      • Pat
        August 10, 2017 at 7:06 am #

Sorry, but the words are needed also. China thought they could read Obama properly for 8 years and they could. They knew Obama wouldn’t do a thing to stop North Korea. If they think the same of Trump, they will also do nothing. China needs to be convinced we are serious!!

I agree with you Pat. Donald Trump would be an American hero if he nuked North Korea and killed every last man, woman and child there.

At least with the Fox/Hannity crowd.

And it is OK to kill the kids because they are all gonna grow up and be just like Kim Jong.

Don’t forget the “weapons of mass destruction” that Iraq had. Thank God Bush went in with his “shock and awe” and killed half of the kids in that country that would have grown up to be just like Saddam and had their own weapons of mass destruction. That was a close one.

And it is just not fair that ISIS gets to kill all the innocent civilians is it? Let’s get on board with that.

When I hear people say that Trump wouldn’t hesitate to nuke a country, I am in SHOCK. If there are any Americans that truly believe that, this country is in deeper trouble than even I thought. Like anyone would support a president who is that psychotic. Trump has made mistakes and said stupid things in the past, but he is NOT psychotic and evil which is what a person would have to be to destroy a country just because they could. The leader in North Korea might fall in that category, certainly ISIS would, but Trump???!!???

Now there you go with the real facts Kellyanne.

Hillary Clinton’s and Donald Trump’s moral compasses align in the same swampy southern direction.

All of Trump’s rhetoric aside about NK, at least he’s gotten China on board with the sanctions. Obama did absolutely nothing about NK except watch the threat grow uninhibited, just like he did with ISIS. Obama was the biggest do-nothing president of all time when it came to foreign policy.
“It was especially significant that China voted for the measure, given that China is North Korea’s largest trading partner and that Washington has been pressuring Beijing to take a harder stance against Kim Jong-un. This is the biggest step China has taken against the regime so far.”

I don’t remember Kim Jung threatening Hawaii and Guam while Obama was president. Childish immature clueless Trump has poked the bear. He did not have to and as you can see sometimes being a bully backfires on you.

We have to poke the bear and the bear we have to poke is China. Childish Democrats need to grow up.

We ARE poking China. And China has a massive military. And plenty of nuclear weapons no where near as old as ours. AND they are friends with Russia who also has nuclear weapons. And they are friends with Iran who also has a powerful military.
Do we really want to start knocking these dominoes over Pat? Do you really think the war will not come to our own country? Those who were once our allies think Trump is nuts and him starting shit is not sitting well with them. They may well not help us if he does something stupid.

If Trump starts world war three you may see much of the world turn their guns on the USA because they are sick of our high and mighty stomping around in their business.

Be careful what you wish for Pat. This is not some computer game we are dealing with.

Dusty, North Korea is threatening to attack us. What do you suggest we do to save lives? It doesn’t sound like North Korea will back down.

I’m watching the board of registrars hearing on Dennis Powell’s signature hearing and Mr. Blumin is doing a fantastic job. Powell is sitting in the background making faces like a high school class buffoon…..Powell is the last person we need in elected office.

That’s why Mr. Powell should be elected. He is open and honest about his opinion of Pittsfield voters. Unlike the ones now that think the same, but don’t outwardly show it.

Sports Fans. Are you enjoying the pre-season N.E. Patriots game on Spectrum ? No, because they consider the Berkshires a NY market. The Patriots game is being broadcast in Springfield ( channel 22) and Hartford, but Spectrum and Linda Tyer knows what you want to view. Such horse dung !

Spectrum doesn’t decide which market we are in – those are gov’t rules. Do some research next time?

I hear Murraca and Dennis Powell are looking for investors for their new pen factory. It will be an amazing pen. It doesn’t matter who writes with it all the writing looks the same.
