DEMS’ ‘JOBS GUARANTEE’ A (NOT SO) CHEAP ELECTION PLOY

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY MAY 14, 2018) — A job is work done for hire that a person does for someone else (including corporations, because under the law, they, too, are people) in exchange for an agreed-upon compensation called wages or pay.  Wages can be barter or money, usually the latter. Wage value should tethered to reality reflect the nature of the work. A doctor, for example, should make more than a person flipping burgers. That must be so for money to be units of value properly measuring work.

The latter point must be made to distinguish money from its more-typically thought of lending-borrowing role. That’s an entirely separate discussion, THE PLANET realizes, but one that has a shard of relevance here because of the onerous nature of usury. Lending with interest morally debases currency by using money as a commodity, which is not an actual product or service but a symbolic representation of value we accept on trust. Using this commodity, money, simply to make more money does not add value to an economy or produce anything tangibly useful. No work is exchanged, and the “value” derived measures only pure greed.

That’s especially true when governments through its central banks and federal reserves  print sham money, which we define as currency with no precious metals to back it. Seen in light of this, wages, therefore, have a certain nobility or dignity, representing – or should — honest work for which one receives fair compensation. Wage value must be tied to the true cost of the labor involved. Another aside: This excludes professional athletes, especially baseball players, who make tens of millions a year for their childish antics.

THE PLANET‘s fleshy preamble leads us to the hard pit at the core: the federal government’s so-called “jobs guarantee,” sponsored by three senators who will likely vie for the Democratic 2020 presidential nomination: Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Cory Booker. The trio and other backers claim the bill would make unemployment obsolete. Not one of the backers provide specifics on how the program would “work” or be funded, of course, except that it would guarantee a $15 an hour job WITH BENEFITS to every American who wants a job.

Artificial “full employment,” even if it could be acehieved, would wreak havoc on employers and workers in the Dreaded Private Sector. It would put unsustainable upward pressure on salaries, the victims of which would primarily be employees at the low end of pay scales.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. Politicians casting for votes promising jobs for everyone.

First question: WHAT jobs? This isn’t the 1930s. There won’t be a Civilian Conservation Corps. Roads, buildings, bridges, and such infrastructure projects today are built by people using computers, software, CAD-CAM, and other high-tech tools requiring advanced training. It’s not the CCC of the Great Depression, where you gave guys with no education picks and shovels and they went picking and digging.

What do you do with $25 million jobless, undereducated people? Some can work as health-care aides, clerks, and the like, but what of the rest? Moreoever, all will require some training? Who pays? For that kind of work, the economy, even in near-bankrupt Pittsfield, already provides minimum-wage service jobs for anyone who wants to work. That’s the “David Hedison” in the ointment. How many among the current jobless are that way because of laziness or because Uncle Sugar hands out more in welfare than they would make in honest bucks.

How much would the program cost Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski? Estimates begin at $543 billion and top out at a trillion ($1,000,000,000,000). How would they pay for it? New taxes and anticipated savings in Medicaid, unemployment, and welfare programs. You know, THE PLANET knows, and Aunt Millie’s pet poodle knows that only the  tax part is true. The bureaucracies are too big, the employment so many, and the corruption so vast for the federal government and the politicians to get rid of any existing programs.

The initiative of Bernie etc. can be explained simply in terms of presidential politics. Democrats see their big chance in the November mid-term elections, looking to hand Trump and the GOB a beating. Promising jobs might be the hoariest political pre-election ploy extant. Do the math. New election cycle = jobs guarantee and pot in every chicken.

“Make work” jobs remains a specialty of government. That parasitic reality can be seen on display 24/7 right there in the Pittsfield School Department. Such fake jobs can only materialize out of thin ozone. They will come from the new bureaucracies required to administer the job measure.

“Make work” position wreck economies and bleed lifeblood out of communities.

Don’t fall for it.

Put the jobless people of Pittsfield to work at the nearly 20-year-old PEDA site! The problem is that it would need a private business to move there.

The only way to get a living wage job in Pittsfield is to be related to the Good Old Boys club! Otherwise, good luck with the state lottery.

The fed seems to able to just print as much as they want and lend it to federal government at interest. The debt seems to be of no concern to the last 20 Presidents. So why not guarantee everyone $15.00 an hour plus bennies? The can just tell the fed to print it.

They seem to have a never ending supply. Any nation that objects, they just go war with. China makes the stuff, WalMart sells the stuff and Americans just stuff their fat faces with it. Everyone is happy.

The next guy is always better. The next will fix everything. Don’t worry about the money. The fed can make plenty more. Poof out of thin air and its there. Congress needs a raise.

I cannot believe there is not going to be an infrastructure program. The countries roads and bridges are falling apart and this should be a major priority. I don’t get it. Why?

I see you tube videos of how modernized many other countries are but America is stuck in personal greed, selfish politicians and vendettas. Our enemies are sitting back watching America destroy itself.

Living wages are paid by state courts system, state colleges, public schools,.Take away federal goverment, state goverment,City goverment jobs and you will see that that private industry pays min wage. Now in capitalism if everyone get a college degree in History then that degree has no value.
Many right wing republicans have devalued public education and then add a public college degree under your belt and you again according to some have little to offer.Add to that a degree earned inthe seventies when colleges were handing out certificates of attendance for protesting and smoking pot.
We know minimum wages stimulate economies as poor people spend all their money and tax cuts to the rich and wealthy get put into Roth IRA never to be taxed again.Thst money is out of the taxable economey forever.A17 year old working in minimum wage will turn around and spend every single penney they earn. This country no longer respects people that work it unly respects what is accumulated

Totally disagree School Committe. State courts, state colleges, and public schools pay way above a living wage. Just look at the skyrocketing salaries of teachers and administrators here in Pittsfield which is greed pure and simple. They want higher and higher salaries at taxpayer expense every year. Also, Ms. Behnke, Pittsfield School Superintendent, whose salary you are always complaining about because it is so high, and you can defend that now?!?

Dan V. it is just a trick by the Socialist left to continue to make everyone dependent on big government. Would anyone then have the will to bite the hand that feeds them? No, of course not because you are then dependent on government to take care of you in the form of a decent paying job. This gives big government more power which is what they want. They don’t care about job creation unless it help them become more powerful and in control.

If Democrats truly cared about job creation, they could have had training programs set up when Obama was President especially when so many people were unemployed after the housing crisis in 2008. Don’t be fooled America by this attempt at creating even more corrupt government bureaucracy.

Something like Walmart would be the exception, primarily because some businesse behemoths want something for nothing. Good job by City Council squashing the move to Tyler Street.

Speaking of Tyler Street, those trash cans look awful. Why would you put a silver colored trash can on that street? It looks terrible. you’d been better off going to Carrs and just dump the silver trash cans, thousands less and just as ridiculous.

Article in the paper about trash rules going into effect. So I get one 32 gallon trash can and anything I can’t break up and get into it I have to pay extra by paying for BULKY WASTE STICKERS.

so right off the bat I had to replace a window blind and it is 46 inches long and I cannot break it up because it is hard plastic. And my 32 gallon garbage can is 28 inches high so the blinds stick up a couple of inches preventing me from putting the top on. So I am in violation of the mayor policies?? This is ASININE!!!

We have failed as A City, when we have NO Say on certain issues. A new School Vote and a Water Project that effects every taxpayer, not just the ones who can afford it, and those are the stipend paid School Committee ans some who make ore a hundred grand a year, add the retires who get paid handsomely and City Workers in general, which is an inconsequence to most.

They clamour they don’t get paid enough. well what is paid enough? It’t better than not being paid at all. Seniors cannot afford this increase, not home owning Seniors that I know?

Seniors,I hope you know the Planet and a couple of City Councilors are there plugging away, along with the builder of the Plant,, still trying to stop this joke.

My peeps in here have said it a few times–that damn West St./Park Square intersection be causing some serious trouble.

The main problem being the left turn from South St. onto West St. with no dedicated green arrow.

But that t’weren’t the problem today, my friends.

Here’s da rules:

1. Right on red in Mass.
2. Full stop is recommended, but not always necessary (probably the law, though).
3. You’re good to go IFFFFFFFFF you look left, look across the intersection for turners with the green arrow coming at ya.
4. ANNNDDDD, I say AND, damn it, there are no pedestrians in the crosswalk, who most likely will HAVE THE LIGHT.
