KOREA PT. II: MOON SHINES IN (AN ON) KOREAN SUMMIT HOPES

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MEMORIAL DAY, 2018) — The most recent developments on a proposed Korean summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean head of state Kim Jung Un indicate the switch has been flipped back to the “on” position. THE PLANET deems this cause for hope though not yet celebration.

Judging by the weekend events, the key figure in resuscitating the talks is South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who took the brokerage baton from Chinese leader Xi Jinping, hopped a plane to Trump Villa, gauged the President’s mood (resolve to see the summit happen), flew back to Korea, and surprised the world by meeting with Un for the second time at the border between North and South an achieving a preternatural rapport with his rival. Moon performed the diplomatic equivalent of an Olympic decathlon, a Bruce Jenner was he WAS Bruce Jenner, Wheaties box and all.

Moon cuts a superb diplomatic figure. He’s good looking, respectable in appearance, positive in outlook, tenacious in relations, independent in thought, and fearless in confrontation — clearly the best South Korea has had at the helm in a while. The contrast between Moon and the two other principals in this peninsular soap opera startles even the casual observer. The larger-than-like Day-Glo Donald Trump and short, fat Kim (Body by Lou Costello) give this most serious topic a semi-comic tone worthy of midget tag-team wrestling from the 1950s, but it soon sobers one to realize the Korean Peninsula has been problematic for the globe for as long, now at the nuclear level.

Moon has the smarts not to underestimate Kim. The DPRK strong man understands far more than he lets on, girded by an education in Switzerland, a sharp intellect, and, oddly enough, a love of good ol’ USA-invented basketball. ‘Tis a tragedy of epic proportions that he would grow up to be a Bulls fan, but one must in practicality assign limits to the winning magic of the Boston Celtics brand. We fantasize longingly about Bill Russell replacing Dennis Rodman as the object of Kim’s hero worship and create scalding dialogue from the old redhead himself, Red Auerbach, on what he might say of the situation.

Ah, but we digress, though as yet another aside, what is NOT a digression in an Information Age dominated by the shallowness of “social media?” As a news and journalistic channel, social media forces serious stories to the top of the tower and makes then dive into a wet handkerchief, and the Korean story has suffered greatly from this Saturday Night Live approach to deadly serious news.

From personal disagreements to international crises, face-to-face look-em-in-the-eye conversation has no equal in solving conflict. Granted, it doesn’t always work — Neville Chamberlain waving a piece of paper on a British tarmac comes to mind — but it will always provide the best hope for resolution. The alternative is a continuation of a pointless, 68-year war to which all sides foolishly contribute and no side wants continued. A handshake trumps a missle launch every time, pun intended.

As we remember on this Memorial Day all who served and especially those who gave their lives and saw combat, let us keep in mind what is at stake in getting Trump and Kim to Singapore on June 12.

Why can’t North and South Korea just solve this problem themselves?

and if Trump wants to pull our troops out of S. Korea let him.

Pretty good rhetoric from a draft dodger. 5 deferments…is that a record?

Will he be sending more to die for a noble cause?

I laugh when the Trump haters talk about him not serving in the military. Clinton and Oboma never served. If their precious Hillary got elected same goes. Military service is not required to be President end of story.

Not at all – that’s why we have a Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs of Staff providing advice & guidance to the President.
I’m just glad John McCain was never elected Prez – the guy is a Globalist, and like all globalists hates the U.S. and believes in one world govt. – globalism above American sovreignty. God bless Donald J. Trump!

It is not that he did not serve it is that he got 5 count them, five deferments while others his age went off to fight for his right to inherit his Dads empire. Also he disrespected John McCain for being captured while flying a mission over Viet Nam.

The real embarrassment to this country is the behavior of Progressives ever since President Trump has been elected. The childish behavior has gone on for much too long. If this was a sports game, we would say that liberals are very poor sports, but this is much more serious and I agree with Herman Cain about Progressives suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome.

President Trump is doing an EXCELLENT job and liberals are pea green with envy.

Donald Trump cares about Donald Trump and that is it sister. If he can use you he will care about you for a short while but then toss you aside. The man is a player and has millions of people willing to follow him right off a cliff. So very sad for America.

So you voted for Hillary? The treasonous head of the Clinton Crime Family? Sold U.S. uranium to the Ruskies in exchange for millions in kickbacks? Sold her soul, while Sec. of State, to the highest foreign bidders in exchange for “favors” when she expected to win the presidency?
Be an American and support your country and your President!

More African Americans are employed than ever before. Employment for women hasn’t been this good since 18 years ago. Many African Americans are on President Trump’s team. Not seeing the racial bias. Everyone has more money to spend than ever before except for here in Berkshire County.

Don’t judge the economic prosperity of this country by what is happening in Berkshire County as this area continues its decline with few jobs, huge income disparity, and lots of unfairness due to our decaying political agenda.

The two might be related…Because Pittsfield stock just went down. If she truly believes that citizens want her back then she is even more out of touch than we realized. Many of her biggest supporters during the campaign have even had enough.

All any Progressive who runs has to promise is “more money for the schools” and they will win the election. No other effort is required so running again for mayor is actually very easy. In a competition between two progressives, say Mazzeo and Tyer, the winner will be the one who promises the most to the Pittsfield schools since these voters have been deciding the elections. So sad for this city.

Correct. Bianchi lost to Ruberto because Ruberto claimed Bianchi was going to lay off teachers. It was just another Ruberto lie but it worked.

If Tyer runs, which I seriously doubt, then Gaetani has a real shot. Her credibility is shot and she has spent her whole term taking care of wealthy friends while pooping all over seniors and fixed income folk. And the last time I checked the voting population is made up mostly of seniors.

I just think she has gotten what she wanted out of the experience and that she has little to gain by hanging around. The machine will probably boot her up the ladder if she wants them to or she could probably retire and live nicely somewhere where the taxes are not so high.

It may be too late, or maybe she does not care, but she is on or near being on the list of mayors that make people feel yucky when they pass them on the street.

Gaetani will reduce the budget seven percent and would decrease the budget with no tax increase. But the most serious immediate threat, is the fight against the not needed water-sewer plant which the G-Man has been fighting furiously against.Flip Floppin Rivers has put a monkey wrench into the works, and road repair-less , cowardly votes have made the G-Man more confident going forward. He needs everyone on board, otherwise we are doomed with the rates.
