PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY JUNE 11, 2018) — They have arrived. Early.

Folks, we have unfolding a breathtaking moment. Someone, apparently, not only thought but actualized the unthinkable. Slam the two major participants in what is the most historic diplomatic outing since 1950 if you insist, but doing so ignores reality. Two men who couldn’t at once be more alike and opposite have tuned out the naysayers to plow ahead for the good of the globe.

There’s no understating the importance of tomorrow morning’s planned summit between DPRNK president Kim Jung-un and President Donald Trump. THE PLANET has no expectations for this improbable meeting, rosy or otherwise. We simply stand agog that it is happening at all, in any way, shape, form, appearance, or attitude. It is, regardless on one’s personal feelings about these two men,  a diplomatic breakthrough not seen ever in the Post-WWII era.  Compared to this, the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was tinker toys, since it took place not with diplomacy but following the collapse of the Soviet Union over the internal weight of its unsustainable military spending.

Trump said he would know Kim’s intentions within the first minute, flying on the dual instruments of “feel” and “intuition.” Maybe, maybe not — but the fact that a U.S. president is meeting at all with the supreme leader of North Korea speaks for itself. Trump and Kim have succeeded where their predecessors tripped up owing to foolish pride and stupid ego. The two elder Kims, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama failed where Kim the Younger and Trump have succeeded. Is a joint Nobel Peace Prize in the offing, doctor?

Kim has a side to him that most Americans don’t realize. He is a realist of the first order, but not above the self-deprecation unheard of from his father and grandfather, who were portrayed as divine beings descended from on high. In March, when Kim met Thomas Bach, head of the Olympic Committee, he joked: “Even if it may not look like it, I love to play sports, especially basketball.” He loves the Chicago Bulls and rightly thinks Celtics’ great Bill Russell is the G.O.A.T. THE PLANET wonders if Trump will show off the Super Bowl ring presented to him by buddy Robert Kraft.

The Western-educated Kim, the “obscure” third son of Kim Jung Il, defied all odds. When he took over from his late father, the “experts” East and West predicted he would be overwhelmed and either ousted or, more likely, controlled by the Old Guard. It didn’t happen. Kim eliminated the Cold War fossils among the military and civil leaders and replaced them with younger people loyal to him, not to “the old way.” He headed efforts to achieve scientific progress faster than anyone thought, culminating with ICBM capabilities. And why should he not have done it? Does the DPRNK not have the right to nukes? Where’s the fine line that “divides” the “good” possession of these hell weapons from the “bad?”

When Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Kim as a preliminary round to the historic Trump-Kim summit, he called the North Korean leader capable and willing to negotiate. The looming hand of China rests on Kim shoulder, to be sure, and there’s every reason to believe the summit with Trump will be productive, simply because it allows for the possibility of opportunity to end a stalemate that’s 70 years stale. Nothing but nothing beats face-to-face, look-em-in-the-eye diplomacy as the sugar substitute for the brew of world peace.

Our favorite Kim story comes from his meetings in April with the president of South Korea. At once point, Kim apologized for the “early wake up calls” prompted by the test launch of missiles. A joke, you see, reveals more than a threat. In Kim, we see man who realizes his place at the table. The United States, the world, has literally seen nothing like it from the North Korean part of that peninsula.

This is a brave, new world.

China and North Korea are two of the remaining five communist countries. China is not going to let NK get too cozy with America.

Vegas odds are that Trump walks out in the first five minutes.

Our attitude toward Russia should be, “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”. President Trump is completely right on this. A Russia and Putin off by themselves is not good for the world. We need to keep them public as much as possible. They will always have their secretive side, but keeping an open dialog with them is essential to keeping them in check.

So keep Russia close and treat your allies like crap? Got it! That should work well the next time we start a war and want others to help us out.

Canada will always be our friend even with this issue between us. Even friends and allies have to re-negotiate issues from time to time to keep everything fair.

If Hillary was prez NK would still be firing ballistic missiles and moving ahead with their nuclear weapon program. And she would have stood by and did nothing, just like her buddy Obama.

Finally North Korea has met an American leader that makes sense to people in that culture and part of the world. Our previous leaders wanted only to placate by throwing tons of money at North Korea with the message “now go away”. It was probably insulting to them and they then went on to use all that money to create nukes thinking how stupid and weak we were to give them all that money.

President Trump projects strength and they get that. Most importantly, they respect that. America has chosen wimpy Republican and Democrat leaders until the election of President Trump. Finally with a strong leader in place we have a chance of reaching out to people in that part of the world in a language they understand. Peace through strength. President Trump is the right leader at the right time.

yah but yer not as strong if you piss off all your allies so that they may not want to back you up Pat. That kind of weakens your position.

Plus, or in addition, why should Kim Jung trust anything Trump says when he is crapping all over his friends?

Pat

I doubt Kim Jung even thinks like that. He is thinking about his own country and his own circumstances and what is best for North Korea.

I don’t see it as “crapping all over your friends”. I see it as re-negotiating the terms of the relationship with our allies to make everything much more fair for everyone.

Pat, only progressives/liberals think negotiating trade deals to make them more fair to the US is crapping all over their allies. Afterall, bleeding heart liberals like Dusty care far more about foreigners and foreign countries than they care about Americans and the US.

But if this NK meeting fails, for any reason real or imagined, just remember it is Obamas fault. Obama did it and he cannot deny it. He made things impossible for Trump unless they are things that are going good which in that case Trump did it hisself and should get not one, but two Nobel prizes plus a bag of airplane peanuts.

Are you saying that a woman can’t come up with these ideas on her own? That I need to be spoon fed my thoughts from FOX news or some other conservative site? I haven’t heard the things I’m saying said in any other places. The last I heard from FOX was on the Sunday talk show when Chris Wallace was grilling a Republican on why Trump was so worried about including Russia in the G-7 talks. They certainly didn’t give the answers I am giving. Of course the liberal channels use no thought at all and keep repeating the idiotic phrase that, “Russia must have something on Trump”.

Of course they can’t come right out and say “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”. That wouldn’t be politically correct which is why I’m saying it now and I believe that is what President Trump in thinking.

I am not crucifying Luciforo or anyone else for that matter! Nuciforo victimized me and my family since the Spring of 1996. In all of the time that has passed by, no one from the Nuciforo network ever once apologized to me and my family. Nuciforo is a very mean-spirited person who manipulates people in conspiratorial situations! He is the dark, inbred prince of Pittsfield politics who local people fear.

Mr. Melle,
It’s 22 years now that you’ve been carrying on your crusade against crooked Pittsfield Democrats, yet you appear unable for some reason to make the connection between crooked Dems in Pittsfield and their equally sleazy brethren at the state and national level.
Has ANY Democrat anywhere ever apologized to anyone that a Democrat slimed?
Has Bill Clinton ever apologized to Juanita Broaddrick?
Did Teddy Kennedy ever apologize to the family of Mary Jo Kopechne?
So why would you ever expect Andrea Nuciforo Jr. to apologize to you?
Get over it, bro!

Jonathan Melle

@GMHeller- As I have written to you many times before, I have criticized or spoken out against Democrats and Republicans! However, I refuse to group all “Dems” in the same basket because of one or two bad apples. I agree with you that Bill Clinton is a case study in “bad boy behavior”. Everyone knew about Bill Clinton prior to his 1992 campaign for U.S. President. It is disingenuous for people to link Bill Clinton’s “bad boy” past to today’s #MeToo movement. I agree with you about Ted Kennedy’s cover-up of Mary Jo Kopechne drowning. It was wrong and a tragedy!
As for Luciforo, from the Spring of 1996 through present day, some people still post their writings that I am “crucifying” him, and the like. What am I supposed to do about that? If I don’t respond, it makes people feel that Luciforo is the victim. When I do respond, people like you get frustrated with me.
As I have stated many times before, since I first met Luciforo at a Dalton Democratic platform in the Spring of 1996, Luciforo conspiratorially had people bully me on his behalf without Luciforo leaving behind his own fingerprints or DNA. Luciforo filed multiple “ethics” complaints against my dad from the Fall of 1997 – Spring of 1998. Luciforo filed secretive complaints against me to the Pittsfield Police Department during the Spring of 1998 to try to send me to Carmen Massimiano’s Pittsfield jail. Luciforo had possibly Denis E. Guyer spread vicious rumors against me during the Summer of 2005 that I “stalked a Jewish woman from Otis” to the people of the Pittsfield area. The woman’s father was one of Luciforo’s bullying henchmen.
I am not “crucifying” Luciforo! I am defending myself by telling people the truth about Luciforo’s mean-spirited harassment of me and my family over the past 22 years!

Heller, politicians on both sides of the aisle are equally scummy. Just because Massachusetts has lots of scummy filthy Democrats doesn’t mean there are not as many evil disgusting Republicans concentrated elsewhere.

Also understanding the culture we are dealing with is good thinking. Progressives consider themselves so worldly, but they have little idea that speaking in the cultural language of a country would get positive results. North Korea respects power and strength not weakness. President Trump is dealing with them in just the right way which is why they will soon be in an historic meeting.

Trump has no scientific advisor with him in Singapore. He should have a Jet dispatched. To Pittsfield to pick up Gaetani, the Wiz would know how to deal with J Man. He has a lot of experience dealing with the Chinese and the koreans are similar to the Chinese. Trump might get an agreement with the G Man by his side. But without him the prospects are very poor. Gaetani is our city’s science advisor and could go head to head with any scientist.

There is an article in iberkshires about the city of Pittsfield spending money. Did they just approve spending $150,000 to UPGRADE the bathrooms at clapp park? Seriously? My house is not worth that much. Should we not put that money fixing roads?

Apparently they rejected spending $64,000 to replace carpeting at PHS. I do not remember there being any carpet when I went there. Sounds like a ludicrous proposal to me. Exactly who suggested this?
Steve Wynn would question spending that much for his casino in Vegas but Pittsfield apparently has plenty of money for luxuries.
