PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY AUG. 15, 2018) — We can finally put “Picnicgate” to rest. D.A. candidate Andrea Harrington did not, repeat DID NOT, “crash” the sheriff’s picnic. THE PLANET obtained word from Congressman Richie Neal’s office that Harrington attended the event on invitation from Neal. She had her photo-op with the congressman, worked the crowd a bit, and peacefully moved on. Whatever “incident” occurred, sources confirm, came from elsewhere. Let this be the end of the non-issue so we can move on to items and issues of more significance, such as why only “four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum to their patients who chew gum.” What gives with that Fifth Dentist?

And as to the charge that State Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier meddled with the election by arm twisting Judith Knight to drop out, it happened. We left it to The Boring Broadsheet to cover (without revealing trade secrets[!]). Two observations: (1) Judith Knight should step forward and reveal exactly what TFB proposed. To put it more bluntly, if she’s so interested in being tough on crime and rooting out even the perception of wrongdoing, why hasn’t she called a press conference and thrown a nutty? (2) Paul Caccaviello expressed the perfect amount of outrage in his public comments, just enough to send a message and yet not enough to make this another sideshow issue. The incident does reveal the slithering nature of Pittsfield’s representative to the General Court.

Isn’t it interesting, the noncoincidence of The BB‘s coverage of TFB’s meddling in the D.A.’s race as well as yesterday’s story on the Berkshire Mausoleum art heist. Without revealing professional confidences, The BB acted solely because of THE PLANET‘s coverage. We won’t reveal newsroom chatterers, but the local daily, in the words of one close to the scene, is “using THE PLANET as an assignment editor. [THE PLANET] uncovers a hot topic, we [The BB] swoop into present the tame [Suit-approved] version.”

MUSEUM MUSINGS — Speaking of which, we find it comical that the local daily chooses now to run a (non) news story on the upcoming hearing Sept. 4 of a lawsuit seeking to stop additional cannibalistic raids of the museum treasury. The appellate hearing will take place in Boston before a panel of three judges. We already knew about it, and the better time to run a tickler would be much closer to 9/4. As we planned, though, our online coverage, which is beating The BB’s pants off, forced the paper to “run a museum story, anything, quick.”

On the same subject, THE PLANET heard from Lynn Villency Cohen on our recent two-part series on the Berkshire Museum “art heist.” Cohen, an art historian, raised some pertinent, even vital questions pertaining to the millions (47) raised in the first auction. Her response to our series:

“You are one terrific writer! All of us “serious” art people don’t offer up the hysterically funny side to this. You do that well!

“Also all 990’s list addresses for Board members at the museums they “work for”. But you know that and have a very funny slant on this!

“Here’s what folks are asking:

  • Where did the money go? Who is investing it? How much of it will go to building renovations and this so-called “New Vision” (No Vision)?
  • What did Van Shields walk away with besides a non disclosure agreement to shut his mouth?
  • How much of the renovation will fund local construction companies and banks that the Mayor, Farley-Bouvier and “state cultural czar” Hinds can boast about?
  • How will this “museum” evolve, as it is a censured institution that cannot borrow from other museums in the way of traveling exhibits, Smithsonian shows or any art work from other museums?

“Here’s a prediction on the building renovation and how the “museum” will evolve.  My gut feeling is that they will open the space up to be large white-washed rooms suitable for millennial Instagram “experiences.” Which translates to empty soulless rooms that will have digital art and touch screen “educational ” stuff for the kids in the vein of a mini Mass Moca.

“All of which can never replace the historical, aesthetic and cultural value of the Rockwell’s, Calders, Hudson River School paintings, and Bouguereaus.”

——— 000 ———

THE PLANET‘s “vision” for the future museum coincides with Cohen. We love her turn of the phrase “millennial Instagram experiences.” It captures perfectly where this once-relevant institution is headed under the “leadership” of its spineless Board of Trustees. Picture Mass Moca’s vapid Sol Lewitt walls — only washed down with Eau de Navel Gazing, an artistic equivalent of goat yoga. Needed most of all is a demand for accounting, in this order:

  • If the Trustees have any hope of credibility, it must reveal the terms of Shield’s “retirement” package.
  • It must account for every penny of the millions raised through auction, as in “Who’s getting how much?”

Short of this, the only intelligent thing for a ticket buying public to do is boycott this irresponsible organization. The art world certainly has. Cohen fingers one of the most important consequences of the Board’s action: Branding the BM with the dreaded “censured” label. This means that the institution is now radioactive in the art world, as in “dead in the water.” Great work, Bill Hines, Howard “Jake” Eberwein III, and the rest of Trustees for their work running greatness flat into the ground.

“OPEN THE WINDOW, AUNT MILLIE.”

LOVE TO ALL.

It is a shakedown and everyone knows it! The Berkshire Museum unethically sells its most valuable art pieces for tens of millions of dollars, and the usual politically connected interests are licking their chops and salivating over the big bucks they want to get their corrupt hands on. Please call every financial done deal by Pittsfield politics one big smelly $hakedown!
I understand the pure ideals of politics is to collect taxpayer dollars to invest in the people, who are the most valuable asset in a community. BUT, in Pittsfield politics, the people get screwed every which way be the Good Old Boys and other Oligarchs! In fact, Pittsfield is one of the most economically unequal communities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Nation. The gap between the Haves and Have Nots in Pittsfield grows wider and wider every year. The G.O.B.’s blame “GE”, but that was 28.5-years ago! The real reason why the Berkshire Museum and the G.O.B.’s do the public business of Pittsfield politics is the shakedown whoever they can to fill their own coffers! In closing, Pittsfield politics is totally corrupt, and everyone knows it!

Tricia Farley Bouvier is a political pawn of the Good Old Boy network who empowered the WHEN group 15 years ago in 2003. Back then, Mayor Sara Hathaway beat Jimmy Ruberto in 2001, after the Gerry Doyle debacle. The G.O.B. found a group of women who swore their political loyalty to Ruberto’s quest to run Pittsfield politics. Two of these “WHEN” political hacks were Tricia Farley Bouvier and the lovely Linda Tyer. As time passed, Mayor Ruberto named Linda Tyer as the City Clerk and groomed her for Mayor after he retired. Also, Ruberto made Tricia Farley Bouvier his Chief of Staff. One hand scratched the other’s back, and after Ruberto, Linda Tyer, and Tricia Farley Bouvier won, “WHEN” was disbanded. After “WHEN”, the new political group was the “Berkshire Brigades”. The outcome was the Ruberto and his G.O.B. group get to run Pittsfield politics, while the “Berkshire Brigades” get the rest of Berkshire County’s political spoils. That means that the average citizen has no say in state and local politics if they don’t ascribe to Jimmy Ruberto’s G.O.B.’s and the “Berkshire Brigades”. In the D.A. race, Ruberto’s G.O.B.’s support Andrea Harrington, while the “Berkshire Brigades” support Judith Knight. I predict Andrea Harrington will receive the most votes in Pittsfield, but not in the other 31 municipalities the make up Berkshire County.

So who started the whole “picnicgate” rumor? Sounds like a dirty politics hit from the DAs office or associates. The perps should be outed.

It’s taken 11 days to come up with the excuse that Harrington was invited by Neal to attend someone else’s party. That is bad manners all by itself. I witnessed the entire event. The spin that she was welcome is patently false. The staff was appalled and buzzing. A VIP declared that never has an uninvited pol attended the event without being invited. Harrington got into with a police officer. She called the former DA a dog. So no, it is not put to rest and it is not a rumor.

I thought Van Sheilds was the mover and shaker for selling the museums art. If he is gone why doesn’t the board just back out of selling anything else?

Totally agree with Lynn Cohen s thoughts on the museum money. Find out where it is and where it is going and keep close public records. This is beginning to look like a Paul Manafort operation.

Lawmaker met with DA challengers

State Rep. Farley-Bouvier floated idea for either Harrington or Knight to drop out

BY LARRY PARNASS

The Berkshire Eagle

PITTSFIELD — As trial balloons go, this one didn’t lift off.

But a state representative asked the two women running for Berkshire district attorney if they would consider talks that could result in only one of them challenging the incumbent, winnowing the field to a single “progressive” alternative.

State Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier, D-Pittsfield, said she met separately last month with both Andrea Harrington and Judith Knight for wide-ranging conversations about politics, campaigns and elective office.

The fact that a conversation was even considered brought a sharp rebuke from the sitting district attorney.

The two women and Paul J. Caccaviello are on the Sept. 4 Democratic primary ballot. The winner goes on to an expected win in the November general election, unless a successful Republican write-in candidate emerges.

In those sessions, Farley-Bouvier said she brought up the question of whether the two women’s candidacies will have the effect of splitting the vote among those who want change in the office — in effect aiding the incumbent.

FROM PAGE 1

Caccaviello, a former 14-year first assistant district attorney, was named to the post this winter by Gov. Charlie Baker, after David F. Capeless decided not to seek reelection.

“I did make a suggestion that we might get these campaigns together to see if there could be a conversation,” Farley- Bouvier said, when asked Monday about her role in the meetings.

The lawmaker said she did not have a particular candidate in mind — Harrington or Knight — who might agree to drop out of the race. And she said her overture about having the campaigns discuss the question was not sweetened by any promise of work in the other’s administration, if elected.

“They both had a clear response that it was not of interest to them,” Farley-Bouvier said. “That was the end of it. A big thing is being made out of a thing that was very small.”

When sitting for about an hour with Knight in Pittsfield, Farley-Bouvier said the topic of possibly meeting with the other campaign was broached briefly.

“It was an extraordinarily small part of that conversation,” she said.

‘LUDICROUS’ SUGGESTION

Knight confirmed that she met with Farley-Bouvier, joined by a member of Knight’s campaign.

She said Farley-Bouvier asked her if she would be open to discussing the question, which she took to be about narrowing the field.

Knight was not.

“The idea that I would step out of the campaign or work in Ms. Harrington’s office is ludicrous to me — a nonstarter,” she said. “If Andrea Harrington wanted to drop out, fine, but I didn’t want to do that.”

She added, “I’m a candidate. If you want progressive change, I’m the candidate.”

Harrington also confirmed Monday that she too met with Farley-Bouvier, after getting an invitation. She said the lawmaker wasn’t the only one involved with county politics to raise the question of whether dual challenges to a sitting district attorney would split any anti-incumbent vote.

Harrington said she had also met earlier with Knight, one of her two current rivals.

“At that point, it was having a progressive candidate, period,” Harrington said. “Tricia is not the only person who has offered to have a conversation.”

Like Knight, Harrington said she declined to explore the idea of having one of the two challengers step aside.

“I just put my head down and work as hard as I can,” she said of her campaign.

At no point in her campaign, Harrington said, has she talked about making a position available in her office, should she be the victor in November. “I have not discussed jobs with anybody,” she said.

WANTING A ‘PROGRESSIVE’

Farley-Bouvier declined to say whether she is opposed to seeing Caccaviello retain his seat, which he assumed March 15 after working in the district attorney’s office for 28 years.

Caccaviello was recommended for the post by Capeless. His appointment by Baker gave him the advantage of running as an incumbent.

“I’m looking for a progressive district attorney,” Farley-Bouvier said. “I am for the full implementation of criminal justice reform.”

Asked whether she expects Caccaviello to back reforms, Farley-Bouvier said, “It’s too short to have a record on that.”

Caccaviello, meantime, challenges the notion that he isn’t reform-minded.

And he sharply questioned whether an elected official should be a party to any conversation that might reduce voter choices.

“I think it’s more than a bit stunning that this actually happened,” he said of Farley-Bouvier’s idea, expressed in meetings with Knight and Harrington, of discussing a change in the field. “It seems more than a little inappropriate, in an attempt to influence the outcome of an election. It’s obviously an attempt to win the election by getting the two to merge.”

Caccaviello said Monday he would be happy to speak with Farley-Bouvier about steps he said he has taken to put into practice the criminal justice reforms the Legislature approved this year.

“It’s the law,” he said of the reforms. “I’ve already done things that the crime reform package dictates.”

Since taking office, Caccaviello said, he has run a training on implicit bias for staff in his office. He said he has spoken in support of “diversion” programs, which seek alternatives to incarceration.

“I never talked to Tricia about any of my platforms,” Caccaviello said. “I’d welcome an opportunity to speak with her about my ideas and vision and qualifications.”

The candidates for district attorney next meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for a forum at the Becket Town Hall.

People registered as Democrats or unenrolled can vote in the Sept. 4 primary. Wednesday is the deadline for any registered Republicans who wish to participate in the primary to change their party affiliation to Democratic or unenrolled.

“I just put my head down and work as hard as I can. … I have not discussed

jobs with anybody.”

ANDREA HARRINGTON, Berkshire DA candidate

“The idea that I would step out of the campaign or work in Ms. Harrington’s office is ludicrous to me — a nonstarter.”

JUDITH KNIGHT, Berkshire DA candidate “They both had a clear response that it was not of interest to them. … A big thing is being made out of a thing that was very small.”

STATE REP. TRICIA FARLEY-BOUVIER, D-Pittsfield

“It seems more than a little inappropriate, in an attempt to influence the outcome of an election. ”

A real whopper of a story in the Berkshire Eagle today about the Berkshire Eagle and 300 other newspapers defending the so-called “free press” against the likes of President Trump. Since when have we had a truly “free press” here in Berkshire County? The Berkshire Eagle has the “nerve” to come out and defend free speech when we know there is no such thing here in Berkshire County. The far left has taken over the media in this area and spins every story to favor their side

The Berkshire Eagle shut down its comment board supposedly because the conversation was getting too heated, but we all know that was a convenient excuse to get rid of it since the Berkshire Eagle isn’t interested in ideas that go against their far left agenda.

FOX news has been a repeated target of the far left. It’s not enough that 90% of the media in this country is controlled by the left. They want complete control of what the public hears. It’s just so hypocritical of these 300 newspapers to come out and champion “freedom of the press” and declare they are not the “enemy of the people” when the majority of them have no real interest in what the people really think if it differs from their own opinion and far left political agenda.

Like I said Pat. Crosscheck your sources with several other sources not beholding to the republican party, Trump or Putin. I know Hannity told his followers not to view or listen to any other news sources but try it. He will not know unless he has a cookie on your computer. (probably does)

Very fake dusty……what’s real is our sewer and water rates skyrocketing and Bouvier’s corruption.

Bouvier was groomed and set up in Boston to do exactly as she is told. She is a puppet without a moral compass blindly executing orders as she lives high on the hog. Like the Trump crowd she has no shame and does not even know what it means.

You have a very weird mind if you can make a connection between the POTUS and Bouvier. But we alfeady knew you had a weird mind.

Thank God that we live in a country School Committee in which we can state our likes and dislikes without having our businesses destroyed (Oh wait they have attempted to destroy businesses of people who voted for Trump or expressed support for Trump) or be denied jobs (Oh wait that even happens here in Berkshire County if someone doesn’t like something about you and your beliefs), but at least we are not hauled off into concentration camps for speaking our minds……not yet anyway.

I suppose that in the end Pittsfield economy was the progressives fault.GE had nothing to do with it.Jack Welch was not the greatest businessman of all time….he left Imelt with a mess.

Where do regressives stand on teaching Pittsfield
students on a corporate dump?
This board will never know but downtown Pittsfield to my own surprise is hopping.Every night there is tons of energy down there. And nowhere to park.

Sad story about couple biking around the world who believed in the goodness of people, but were tragically killed by ISIS just a few days ago.
