Let us go, then, into more soothing territory this weekend — into Cough Drop land, all menthol, glycerin, and good. Let us be borne back, back, back …

On Feb. 9, 1964, THE PLANET joined 73 million other Americans watching agape as The Beatles broke into “All My Loving” on The Ed Sullivan Show. We were hooked. That band changed lives, including that of brother Mick, who then-and-there decided to be a musician. To this day, he can still be seen on stage, guitar in hand and mic in front, performing, having made a living — and a good one — from playing his passion.
It’s a source of great amusement that to this day the band’s music remains as popular as ever — maybe more so, as John, Paul, George, and Ringo have ascended into myth. It’s irrational, of course, but again, ever since the dawn of human consciousness and self-awareness, we’ve known that sentience without emotional outlet can only end in some form of insanity. Thus, we say, “Long Live the Fab Four.”
John Lennon had it right when he said in 1966 that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus. The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, leprechauns, Santa Claus, Organized Religion, The Beatles: Without our myths, we don’t function sufficiently, let alone optimally.
The Beatles went through an amazing metamorphosis in their 10 years together. Phase 1 were the early years from 1960 to the sacking of Pete Best in June ’62. Then followed Beatlemania, from then until they stopped touring in August 1966. Next, the Studio Years that went from the Summer of Love until the arrival of Yoko Ono. Finally, the Dissolution ended the creation. Since then the lads from Liverpool have risen to an apotheosis, the post-post-modern age’s closest facsimile to godhead.

While each period in the band’s life provides enormous fascination, THE PLANET favors the Beatlemania years, with the group putting out hit after hit on the strength of John and Paul’s songwriting. The songs are too many to mention, going from the obvious such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” to the more obscure gems “There’s a Place” and “You Can’t Do That.” The music still conveys an infectious joy. Even at their most introspective (Lennon’s “Hide Your Love Away” or “In My Life”) the songs are irresistible and sound as fresh as the first hearing.
The apex of The Beatles’ achievement was and is the Sgt. Pepper album. This epic, recorded on what today would be considered primitive four-track machinery, broke creative barriers with the writing, performing, and technological experimentation. The Beatles had an unmatched knack in the studio to know how far to push it and when to hold back, reminding us of Andre Gide’s dictum that “great art is borne of constraint and dies from too much freedom.” It’s a lesson that today’s artists do not know.
How does a band follow up an album hailed as the greatest in pop music history? Nothing could satisfy this challenge, much less the pastiche of The Magical Mystery Tour. By then, it became clear The Beatles were floundering, keyed by Brian Epstein’s death in August 1967. They stopped listening to people like producer George Martin, splintering in separate directions. Then there were the drugs. You know The Beatle did drugs, the old joke goes, because they let Ringo sing. Drugs, ego, and Yoko spelled doom, ending with the Let It Be disaster. Apple, The Beatles’ legacy company, to this day won’t release the film. The dream was over, though they had one final gem in the Abbey Road album.
Individually, Paul has had the most prolific career, though George proved himself to be an equal or better songwriter. George still has the distinction of producing the greatest Beatles’ solo album, his All Things Must Pass opus. John fell under the sway of Yoko and suffered the most artistically, failing as he did to produce anything post-Beatles to equal McCartney or Harrison. And Ringo … let’s just say he just stayed Ringo.
To convey the true magnitude of the band to anyone below the age of 50 is nigh impossible, but they still enjoy the music, and that’s enough.

The public open house for the new Taconic High School is today from 3pm to 6pm. Taxpayers have been saddled with extroadinary debt for this school, and yet officials decide to make it as difficult as possible with a 3 hour window to come out to see it! One more thing!!!!!

Dan, now we have something on which we can truly disagree. Shaved Fish is, to my mind, a top 10 all time album; by FAR the best Beatles solo creation. Ram would be second. Paul and his god-awful Wings stuff, and everything else, is just not in the same league.
And its funny, Edward R. And I are diametrically opposed on everything else, so why shouldn’t we be here too. I am a Stones guy by about the same ratio as he is a Beatles guy, and I do love the Beatles, just love the Stones much more.

SHAVED FISH was a solid work, no doubt. Lennon’s artistic suffered because of (a) his disastrous political period (b) his animus toward Paul (“One thing you can’t hide is when you’re crippled inside”), (c) his “Lost Weekend” in LA with May Pang and Harry Nillson, (d) his reclusiveness owing to Yoko, especially her falling for astrology. Wings was mostly as you say, but BAND ON THE RUN was Paul’s solo masterpiece. As for the Stones, yup, we dig them, too.
Abbey Road has always been my favorite Beatles album. It was the final time they were in the studio together (Let it Be, which came out a year later, was recorded and filmed before Abbey Road). The medley on the B side is incredible. Sgt. Pepper’s was a masterpiece that has stood the test of time, but their two previous albums, Rubber Soul and Revolver, were good transition pieces that led to Sgt. Pepper’s. I have the Beatles channel on my XM radio all the time.

ABBEY ROAD, unquestionably, first-rate gem. The interesting thing the Beatles body of work is that the songs never sound dated. They sound fresh, no matter how many time you hear them.

Next an officer who is in a cruiser takes the places of the beat cops and those that just walked the beats are in the cruisers. This can be accomplished with beat cops in the two areas 24 hours a day. You can see how very down to earth the Gman is. He is one of the most sophisticated individuals I know but he is excellent in reducing things to plain common sense Now we have to see if Marchetti allows the legions.
