PITTSBURGH MASSACRE AFTERMATH: THE BEAST WITHIN

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY OCT. 29, 2018) — “They will not win out.”

Pittsburgh, Pa. mayor Bill Peduto spoke those brave words in the wake of the latest installment of “BLAM! Great American Gunfire Cliché … or is it our newest “reality TV” show? THE PLANET refers to the assault-weapon attack on the Tree of Life synagogue that left 11 people dead and several wounded. This type of attack has now descended into a low-form cliché: Lone loser white gunman attacks defenseless people using a semi-automatic assault rifle.

Peduto’s words also rang the cliché bell, a literary bromide offering a Q-tip to staunch a severed head. We hear similar words after each of these mindless mass murders, but that nag has already left the stable. They did win out. They have won out. That’s why there are metal detectors at school entrances and why, to go to a sporting event, management treats you like a suspected terrorist.

They have won out.

———- ooo ———-

The loser who shot and killed those people, he won, using an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle and three Glock .357 pistols (and, by the way, how did he come out of it alive? Why didn’t he take a dozen in the hat?). His actions set up another hate-fest centered on gun control, racism, violence, and whatever else you want to throw in the “I am this and you’re a that” soup. How do you keep the unhinged and the simply bad from possessing such weapons? Since we are still “debating” this issue, the answer must be that “Society can’t prevent it.” Weapons manufacturers will continue to make their products for an eager worldwide market, and as long as that happens, some of them will filter down into the wrong hands, more laws or no more laws.

The question “So what does society do?” splinters then into another round of tribal politics, sewing more division, more hatred, and more strife.

Actually, “Society” doesn’t need to do anything. “Society” doesn’t exist. “Society” isn’t some “thing” outside of human experience. “Society” is us. We — are “Society,” and after 10,000 years or so of civilization, we still haven’t tamed the beast within. Perhaps this is beyond our capability as humans.

We say we love freedom.

We don’t.

We hate freedom, since freedom inevitably ends up in license. And “politics” is that activity that feeds upon our inability to coexist in harmony by pretending to do two diametrically opposed things at the same time: It creates the illusion that we label “freedom” while at the same time implicitly or explicitly creating governing forms that ALL — all — consist of some form of authoritarianism.

The beast within prospers because our technological realizations have made self-destruction achievable, whether on a personal, group, national, or international level. The test for any civilization will be its ability to survive its technological innovations. We of the planet earth have thus far flunked out. Atomic café, anyone?

Where is our time for The Quiet? For reflection? For slowing down? Where?

It’s interesting to note that among the 11 worshippers killed in the attack were people aged 97, a married couple in their 80s, 88, 75, 69, 66, 65, and two in their 50s. No young people. Think about the implications of that.

Those looking here for “solutions,” “answers,” or even “responses” will not find them. We leave that to the politicians, authorities, police, and others who have to pretend they have something new for us.

Mad Men follow only their own rules. We are a society that loves freedom. Many american men and women lost their lives so that we could enjoy that freedom and no one should forget it. These isolated butcherings occur at a much higher frequency than they did in the past. The Major question we must ask is Why. Are we overlooking something that we did in the past that we are not doing now or are these incidents fueled by the world we live in today? Looking for the answer is like looking for a pin in a thousand bales of hay. One thing we must do is examine who our elected leaders are and closely examine their rhetoric. There is not a scintilla of doubt that we have a president who foments violence. He loves people to body slam journalists and wants his crazzies to punch people in the mouth who criticize him. This is something very different which we have never before seen in an American President. The environment of the political landscape under Scump is something we Americans have never seen before. For the first time in American history we have a president who espouses dictatorial power which no present American citizen has ever experienced. Our republic is in revolution right now and the coming midterms will be the most important election period of our entire lives. Is Scump responsible for the new born hate and divisiveness we are experiencing in America right now? I will leave it up to every individual in this country to decide this question on Nov6th. For my part I say he is responsible for most of the new born hate and violence we are experiencing in America today. Who agrees with me will be decided on Nov 6th. The ballot box is the most powerful tool the American people have at their disposal. We all need to use it.

When a president of the United States has no use for the truth what does that say about those who support him? All of us democrat or republican are not really that far apart. The politicians will say we are but we aren’t . We all know the difference between right and wrong and all of us know the truth from a lie. Anyone who says they don’t value these tenants are just plain crazy. I believe we have given trump a chance but he blew it. Will the next democratic or republican president be better than trump? I think so because we have seen a lot about trump we don’t like and we will remember these traits in the years to come. We made a mistake with trump. He pitted Americans against Americans. We have had enough. We must move forward without him and we can clip his wings to do no more damage by voting Democrat on Nov ,6 th The type of Democrat I am talking about is ALL of us

Let me address the fallacies in your rant –

1) Dems & Republicans ARE far apart – leftists/socialists are for gun control, open borders, sanctuary states, unlimited immigration, abortion, global government, etc.
2) Not all people can recognize truth from lies – you would be exhibit A
3) “We” did not make a mistake with Trump – he was voted in by the people
4) All of us are NOT Dems – see point #1 – I completely disagree with the Dem platform

Trump carries a reputation of making deals, and liberals hate it. Liberals speculate if Trump can cut deals with real politicians over real issues? So far in his Presidency, Trump have proven that he is up to that task, even reaching over to the Democrats to negotiate a deal over DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Making historic deals concerning trade, the Iran Deal, and other major business deals for companies here in the United States. The biggest obstacle is a healthcare bill aka Obamacare. If Donald Trump can repeal and replace Obamacare, liberals will have no choice to face embarrassment. The last thing liberals want to see President Donald Trump do is make deals with real politicians over real issues.

G. Berish. I read your post on the last board where you mockingly said Gaetanis is the Messiah. Actually you are correct. In his first coming as the Messiah in the 80’s he saved the city residents over 100 million dollars. If you have been paying attention the Messiah’s second coming is scheduled for mid November. There will be those who will try to thwart him like the secretary in the mayors office and five halfwits on the council. No one has ever seen the Gman’s A game but let me assure you that if you are on the opposite side from him and if he decides to level his A game on you. You are as good as gone. I have seen him operate when the stakes are high and watching him operate is a sight to behold. I watched him in the 80’s. He purposely laid back for a while and planed his attack and when he struck all that was left was scattered bones and cheap clothing all over the floor. He took a ,150 million dollar pot of gold away from one of the worlds most successful engineering companies with the ease of stealing candy from a baby. Ironically he will be doing battle with the same engineering company again. I predict that they will try to fill the council chambers with their bodies but that will make no difference to the Gman. He is coming to win for the tax and ratepayers. The greatest show on earth will play out in little pittsfield. It will be David against Goliath in a rematch. David won last time and he plans to win again this time. Yes you are right G. Berish Gaetanis is Pittsfield’s Messiah. Yes indeed

Social media allows for the spread of false information, threats, anger, and hate, and do it all with pretty much total anonymity. We have used our online presences to create tribes, separated by hundreds and thousands of miles, yet linked by the speed of our internet connection. The result is that we have zero respect for anyone who think or holds values different from our own.

It’s long overdue that we hit the off button. It’s not easy in this connected world. It’s got to start with each one of us, so…….

Good night all! Have a good day tomorrow.

Hey He can’t Win

You should be ashamed of yourself for your post. Judgeships are largely political, which may help explain why he didn’t get one, if indeed he put in for one. The Governor’s Council only gets involved when the governor brings a nominee forth, that is why it is called a governor’s council, you idiot.

And you obviously don’t know what you are talking about when it comes to jury selection either.

Cacc applied three times to gov. for judgeship; gov. nominates him three times to the Governor’s Council; Governor’s Council denies him three times.

I’m not finding any errors or omissions in ‘He can’t win’ ‘s argument.

Anyone else recall when Mitt Romney was pressured by local pols to appoint Dave Capeless over Rich Dohoney after DA Jerry Downing’s sudden, unexpected death?

Continuity is crucial in protecting internal corruption.

Pat – Trump is one of Israel’s biggest supporters, you are right. But the shooter did say that this support was preventing MAGA. Trump courts racists as does the National Review and the WSJ these days. The Sat NR lead article was about how in Europe they bow to Sharia. They buried it later in the day after the news. It’s hateful speech all the time in so many papers but the conservative es have gone down a slippery slope that is distasteful. (Despite a break with French (NR writer) saying he would change how he wrote about police brutality. )
I appreciated the Mayor of Pittsburgh’s response – civil, sensible and with common sense. Too bad all sides are lacking that.

The shooter is obviously not well mentally or morally The shooter’s version of MAGA is not Donald Trumps version of MAGA. President Trump does not court racists. More African Americans have changed from Democrat to Republican because of President Trump. Do you really think there aren’t racists who vote Democrat? Does that make all Democrats racist? Just because some Trump supporters are racists doesn’t mean that the majority of Trump supporters are racist. There is no logic to what you are saying.

Yes, there are Democrats who are racist. I never said all Republicans are racist and I do not believe evthat to be true.
But I disagree that I am not making sense. Trump has changed the temperature of country to allow public speech of a tenor that was not considered acceptable before. Discussing immigrants as insects et al.
I like conservative small government policies that do not carry this tenor of vulgarity or bigotry. I’m with the dissenting Republicans.

Now we are going to throw more money away, this time on a “substation”. Tyer is going to make it happen, she said. She is also quoted in the boring broadsheet as follows:

“She said she’s also working to accelerate her fight against blight and downed streetlights, which she said can contribute to criminal activity in the neighborhood. And Tyer said she wants to understand how unemployment factors into crime.”

“I just am so glad that we’re having these conversations about the situation in the West Side,” she said. “And we’ve got some work to do.”

“I really want to get busy doing, not just on this issue but on so many issues that are confronting us here in Pittsfield.”

And how long has she been mayor, and didn’t she campaign on blight and blast Bianchi right on Robbins Ave while campaigning?

And now she wants to get busy doing? Gimme a break. She had her chance and blew it. At this point, I might even vote for granny warren or harrington for mayor before tyer.

Sister She is what the Gman has always called her. Secretary tired. In 2015 we had a choice between an idiot and a genius and we chose an idiot. The Gman has been talking about boots on the ground, body cameras and a police oversight/advisory committee for three years at every council meeting. She is only three years late. She doesn’t have a single accomplishment to show for three years in her position. She should be held up as an example as to what a failed mayor looks like. Just imagine how differently things would look !like if the Gman was elected mayor. Only in politics can a idiot like tired beat a genius like Gaetanis. The Gman has been out there front and center for the past three years feeding tired ideas as to what she should do but she wasn’t listening. She and five light weight councilors will try to stop the Gman as he makes his move to save the city another 30 million but it is plainly evident they do not know the Gman but I assure you that the Gman has worked very hard these past three years to try to save the rate and taxpayers some 30 million dollars and there is no stopping him now. Everyone soon will see the messiah in his second coming. He is on the move for the rate and tax payers and that should put any politician on notice that the Gman is coming to score a win for the people of pittsfield. The greatest show down since his last show down in the 80’s is near at hand. His teeth and claws have been sharpened and he is ready to deliver a nice Xmas present to all city residents. Stay tuned a very good show will be played out soon right here in our beloved pittsfield

Sister thanks I’ll pass. The Gman never cared to be mayor. He was laying down tracks to arrive where he is today. He has accomplished what he set out to do. He and his team of scientists and engineers will give a presentation on ways to reduce the costs at the sewer plant by 10’s and 10’s of millions of dollars just like he did in the 80’s. The Gman says that many people in the city today have no clue as to who he is and what he did for the city in the80’s However thru his TV show and letters and commentaries he feels everyone today knows who he is and what he did for pittsfield when he built the city’s two drinking water plants. If the Gman is successful in saving mega millions again do you think the city residents might want a mayor of his caliber? I asked the Gman about running for mayor. He very quickly responded. “May be I could use a vacation” You’ve got to love the Gman. He is the most down to earth man I’ve ever known and of course he is a genius.

President Obama is on the scene now and scumps approval rating dropped 4 points in the past week to 40% president Obamas approval rating today amongst Americans is a staggering 63%. If he stays on the campaign trail until election he will sink scumps approval rating to 25__30%. Obama made clear that it was his administration that put the american economy on the firm footing it is on now but he claimed that if Scump remains in office much longer he will undue all the success he worked hard to help the american taxpayer. It was refreshing to listen to a honest man who has the american people in his heart. All the american people. Who deserves credit for the booming economy? This is not a petty argument. How voters answer the question could well determine whether Democrats retake the House of Representatives come November.

Trump and Obama (and their admirers) are slugging it out, both claiming that it is their policies that have led to the ongoing economic expansion, steady job growth and higher stock prices.

Happily for President Trump, the pros agree with him. A recent survey of economists suggest it is President Trump, and not Obama, who should be taking a bow.

The Wall Street Journal asked 68 business, financial and academic economists who was responsible for the strengthening of the economy, and most “suggested Mr. Trump’s election deserves at least some credit” for the upturn.

A majority said the president had been “somewhat” or “strongly” positive for job creation, gross domestic product growth and the rising stock market.

The pros cite the White House’s push for lighter regulation and the recent tax bill as critical to a pro-growth environment; more than 90 percent of the group thought the tax bill would boost GDP expansion over the next two years.

A year ago in the same survey, economists awarded President Obama mixed grades. Most saw his policies as positive for financial stability, but neutral-to-negative for GDP growth and negative for long-term growth. By contrast, Trump was seen as neutral to positive for long-term gains.

Why would Trump rate higher than Obama with this group? Economists point to the upturn in business confidence that accompanied Trump’s election, and tie that to increasing business investment. Spending on capital goods accelerated sharply over the first three quarters of last year, growing at an annualized rate of 6.2 percent.

Such outlays will spur productivity gains and lead to wage hikes, creating a virtuous circle complete with rising consumer confidence and spending.

Unhappily Trump, voters have not yet caught up with the experts. Democrats have done an excellent job of trashing Trump’s policies, issuing hysterical alarms over the supposed dangers of deregulation (toxic water, foul air!) and vilifying the GOP tax bill.

Imagine the nation polling negative on a tax cut for an estimated 90 percent of the workers. That takes genius.

Democrats are terrified that the tax cuts will be a pleasant surprise to those who believed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) when she called the bill Armageddon, and when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) declared it a “kick in the gut to the middle class.”

They are even more terrified of the bonuses and raises being handed out by employers large and small, who credit the tax bill for those unexpected benefits. Democrats are trying to convince voters that those $1,000 bonuses and pay hikes are “crumbs” as multi-millionaire Nancy Pelosi recently said.

Maybe $1,000 is “pathetic” to Pelosi, but for a great many Americans, it is a big and welcome windfall.

So far, Democrats are winning the messaging war, using President Trump’s unpopularity to sour Americans on everything the White House does.

In a recent Quinnipiac poll, a record 66 percent of those surveyed graded the economy as “excellent” or “good” but 49 percent of those surveyed credited Obama while only 40 percent named Trump.

That poll, though, seems biased. Only 23 percent of those questioned were Republicans, while 34 percent described themselves as Democrats, and 38 percent said they were Independents. It also asked the questions in a way that appeared likely to elicit an anti-Trump response.

As the months pass, it will be increasingly difficult for Democrats to separate rising wages and faster growth from the tax bill sponsored by Republicans and the rollback of regulations, which has encouraged an upturn in business investment.

Even the New York Times, no friend to President Trump, has described the “wave of optimism” sweeping over Americans business leaders, saying it is “beginning to translate into the sort of investment in new plants, equipment and factory upgrades that bolsters economic growth, spurs job creation — and may finally raise wages significantly.”

The Times ran the piece on New Year’s Day, pretty much guaranteeing it would attract few readers, but still.

More than two million workers have now received bonuses and or raises, with their bosses telling them the benefits are flowing from the GOP tax bill. That number will continue to grow as other companies are pressured into sharing the proceeds from lower taxes. This is a powerful and persuasive movement that is gaining momentum every day, which is probably why Democrats are so foolishly belittling the payouts.

A vast majority of Americans feel more optimistic about their prospects than they have in a decade. Will they really want to rock the boat come November and throw out the party at the helm? We shall see.

Most of it hateful and even more of it totally inaccurate. I’ve just read through your posts from a few weeks back regarding the porn lawyer and his client during the hearings for the SJC. You say you know truth and speak fact you are so wrong in your written comments for all the world to see. You may not see how foolish it makes you look and that’s ok but you are hurting your alter ego and his chances of even being taken seriously as a candidate for election. TDS articulated some very compelling points refuse them with something above a third grade response.
When you run for office or the Gman does he is going to need to listen to all the voters / Taxpayers. Since they are citizens of the country and city their concerns are valid and worthy of an articulate response that at least dignifies them as a human.

Believing that history is the best judge of any politician I prefer mine long dead. I don’t believe rational and logical thinking prevails in current times it’s more about emotion now.
I ask though respectfully how many women are marching or invading depending upon viewpoint that are pregnant with little to no prenatal care? The area of origin is known for the Zika virus being a pinhead microcephaly is important to me. What of zoosters and HPV? Are we setting up for an epidemic?

Just wondering

Joe I don’t think we are setting up for an epidemic. I say this because I believe that the WHO monitors even these third world countries and delivers the most up to date immunizations. As far as prenatal care for pregnant women that is a toss up. I doubt that any of these women have had any prenatal care nor even know what that means. Not having prenatal care sets up a whole pandora’s box of life long care we will have to provide to these children of these arriving immigrants. We must establish a protocol to address all of these problems as recently as yesterday. What have we seen so far from grump about a protocol?? Absolutely nothing. There in lies the biggest problem. I haven’t heard a peep from trump about this and I don’t think we will. It will take a concerted effort of the entire congress to address these problems and I think it will be addressed if the dems win the house.

I enjoy having fun with all the scumpetts on this board. This little site is a small microcosom which is indicative of the macrocosom which is the United states. Are there more scumpetts on this board than there are reasoning individuals? It is hard to say but suffice to say there are deep divisions. Our type of government is the best type of government any where in the world. Next Tuesday we will vote to either continue the insanity we are locked into or we will choose a new path to sanity. It is as simple as that. In any event I hope everyone every where comes out to vote so we can see what direction the voters choose for the next two years. I would hope that we have a 100% voter turn out but I know that if we have A 50% turnout we will be lucky. So about the best I can say now is get out and vote. This is probably the most important election in any of our lifetimes. All of us should be resigned to accept the outcomes of the election and help whoever wins . That is the american way.

Just a question. Columbus is currently scorned for coming to these shores devoid of an invite. Being fully aware that he must have been the father of modern epidemiology and intentionally infected the “Indigenous Peoples” with small pox and other diseases how many in the caravan have been immunized from many of the diseases we have work so hard and invested so deeply to eradicate from our shores?
We have thousands marching towards our borders in an attempt to leverage our resources hum I think in another time some might call that an invasion.

Joe Pinhead. I was wondering where you were. This is a good point. If the illegals enter as asylum seekers at a legal entry point, I believe custom agents will check for immunization records. If these immigrants don’t have paperwork I believe they will be vaccinated and quarantined for some period of time. I believe these immigrants are marching toward a legal entry point. However those trying to enter illegally can pose the problem you are speaking of,

Joe Pinhead

Art, those who have entered illegally are in some part responsible for the return of some of the diseases we had eradicated. They are marching towards an entry point but once here Who knows what will happen the border controls will simply be overwhelmed. Can we trust that political rhetoric and positioning won’t get in the way of truth from either side? Will we get an honest accounting of the true and total costs of this in terms of human resources expended? Sickness and disease brought in? Crime? Or will we hear that the vast majority are Drs and lawyers? What will the cost be overtime to social services healthcare etc? Will we ever know?

Just sayin

Joe. Yes this is a very big problem. At a legal point of entry, the problems you mentioned would be properly addressed. Illegal entry incorporates the ills you are speaking about. Trump has no clear policy to address these immigrants who so far appear to be trying to enter the US legally. Without clearly established guide lines I am fearful that the illegal entry will become more problematic than it is now. Trump is saying he will ship them all back to where they came from. How do you think that will play out? There are many people in this country who sympathize with these individuals who are risking everything to escape the brutality in the countries they come from. What should we an empathetic country do? Should we send them back their home land where they face certain danger or should we do what we can for the poor souls? I don’t think trump is the person to decide the fate of these individuals as he has no empathy and decency as has been demonstrated in the two years since he has been president. A big problem that we must solve.

Art,
There are a pile of problems as we have touched on. Of course as part of the human condition we each have both empathy and compassion towards these poor souls. However we must have empathy and compassion towards those who will and can be negatively impacted as well. Can we as a country bear the costs for all the worlds ills?
Did this issue start in their home country last week? last year? or has it been brewing for a long time and finally reached a crisis point? if so then Multiple administrations have failed in foreign policy attempts programs etc. Have we not as US citizens spent untold Billions to bolster all of central America? we have not turned a blind eye, those that are entrusted and compensated to monitor and work on these issues have failed us the American citizen and their failure has lead to untold suffering and loss of life. that’s in part why some refer to the whole mess in DC as the swamp. We see the caravan because they show us that in the media. Have you seen a story in the mainstream of life in any Central American country over the past say 10 years?

They are being taught by far left colleges to not even bother checking for disease or that they might be dangerous.
