PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY MARCH 27, 2019) — Today, THE PLANET offers quartet valediction of both hail and farewell.

  1. ED REILLY — We first met Ed in the mid-60s at his parent’s variety store. We would stop there on our way to Wahconah Park for Red Sox games. Our next encounter came during the municipal election of 1991, when we ran in a mayoral field of five that also included incumbent Ann Wojtkowski, former councilor Jim McCaffrey, and Andy Kelly. Ed impressed us with his self-deprecation and questioning of the political process. We thought anyone smart enough to wonder why he’d be crazy enough to run for office should win an office. After he won, we covered him in newspaper columns and on talk radio. He wasn’t an “electric” speaker. Dull and soporific is more like it, but he loved to talk. A joke sums it up: “What happens when you ask Ed Reilly for the time? Answer: He tells you how to build a watch.” Our most surprising moment with Ed came when as outgoing mayor he sat in with us on the radio for commentary on the election that put Gerry Doyle in the corner office. When we asked Doyle what he would do to get the city back on track, Reilly swept up his papers, shut his briefcase, said “I’m outta here,” and stomped out. Bullet Bob Shade nearly choked on his pizza. We last encountered Ed during his most recent bid, a seat in the state legislature. He lost, but it gave us the chance to smooth over any of the rough spots in our relationship. We will remember him as a man who lifted himself up with persistence and hard work. He graduated St. Joe, went to BCC, worked in various jobs while he put himself through law school, taking night classes. That’s the kind of guy we want in our platoon.
  2.  ROB GRONKOWSKI — We loved the exuberance he brought to everything, both on the field and off. Gronk’s retirement didn’t surprise anyone, especially after the New England Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl last month. Fittingly, Gronk’s highlight-reel catch, the final grab of his great career, set up the winning TD. Off the field, Gronk was Gronk, a man-child, a life-pan Apollo, who could party to the max without going the Aaron Hernandez route. Less known was Gronk’s tireless community efforts, particularly visiting sick children. Gronk came last month to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse for the Duke-SU basketball game. He didn’t refuse one autograph, one request for a photo, one handshake. His politeness and humility won everyone over. He made a lot of Patriots fans that night. THE PLANET gives the GOAT tight end our gold watch and laurels.
  3.  JOHN KROL — JK’s headed for the Boston suburb of Newton. His 10-year council run we see as a footnote. For us, the most fulfilling aspect of his public life came from the fact that it furnished the basis of our friendship. Over those years, we had numerous dealings. He never refused a request for comment, showing that rarest of political gifts, a thick skin. We most enjoyed our turns on his radio-TV show, the give-and-take of which never failed to amuse. THE PLANET thanks him for that, and we wish him the best in his new future. Pittsfield’s loss, Newton’s gain.
  4.  WOMEN’S BASKETBALL or GO JACKRABBITS! — We had the opportunity to enjoy a up-close view of women’s first- and second-round of the Division I NCAA Championship, held at the Carrier Dome at SU. The women’s game has rekindled our love of basketball precisely because … they play basketball. Unlike the men’s game, which has become a testosterone-laced affair with gangsta mugging replete with the unnatural terrors of individualistic slams, the women play a team game, with a ton more passing, looking for lanes, trying to find the openings. Patient, subservient selflessness might be a way to best capture the flavor. They play under the rim, not above it, and it’s a style of the game we used to see at all levels, including the pros, but rarely see today. Our new favorites are the Lady Jackrabbits of South Dakota State University (Adam Vinatieri’s an alum). The Jacks outlasted Quinnipiac in the opening round, then went on to take Syracuse in round two. THE PLANET had the pleasure of sitting with SDSU athletic director Justin Sell during the game, a man whose pride in the program retells the team’s very history of success — and not just on the court. The girls boast a collective GPA of 3.6 (3.2 for all 19 of SDSU’s teams). Sell and all the good folks who made the long haul from Brookings, S.D. gave us Northeasterners a lesson in camaraderie, class, friendliness, and ease of being. How we wish we could transplant the innocent, hand-shake Midwest personality into the feverish, howling personas of the Northeast. We now have a new team: Go Jackrabbits! THE PLANET sends our love and support, and shall keep a close watch on your doings in the next round in Portland, OR.

Hail and farewell.

Nice chage of pace DV. Mayor Ed was a good man, good father and spouse who dearly love the city. Also nice words about the women’s game. I’m like you, much rather watch them. As you say they play real basketball. Can’t wait for Gronk’s first film.

Mayor Gerry Doyle put Pittsfield “back on track” by misplacing millions of dollars in public funds that is still unaccounted for today, starting PEDA in the Summer of 1998, which still has 0 private tenants over 20 years later, signing the Consent Decree with GE’s then CEO Jack Welch, which sold out Pittsfield for pennies on the dollar, and showcasing the Good Old Boys club that has run Pittsfield into the proverbial ditch!

John Krol will most definitely leave an indelible stain on Pittsfield politics.

If you recall Krol rose to prominence during Don Ruberto’s years in the corner office.

Following many years of enjoying the status of a political insider, Krol lost his status during last year’s DA contest. Although the details have remained a mystery, the tremors from his expulsion, from the in-group, was felt after “Andrew” Harrington’s decisive primary victory over then-DA Caccaviello,

I mentioned Krol a couple of times as one of many architects of Harrington’s rise to political stardom, only to have it rebuffed by Barry Clairmont, claiming “John had nothing to do with the campaign after the primary”.

When it’s all said and done, history will not be very kind to Krol. His tendencies to seek retribution and retaliation, against those who spoke ill of or resisted the in-group’s agenda, will go down as his sole accomplishment (or blemish).

I for one will not miss John Krol.

And that’s the bottom-line.

Plastic bag ban passed. Caccamo wants to use taxes to punish you into submission of his policies, like a good government should

And Ward 3 Councilor Nicholas Caccamo said it is common for governments to use taxes or other means to encourage policy in the marketplace.

These tariffs encourage manufacturers to return production back to the USA. There may be some short term pain for a long term gain.

And unlike a “tax” you have the option to not buy the product, and consequently avoid paying the tariff completely.

Caccamo wasn’t the only one pushing for a requirement in the ordinance for retail to impose a fee for bags – Kroll expressed his anger when the council vote removed the requirement. Others joining Kroll & Caccamo were Persip, White & Moon – the Socialist/Progressive Gang of Five.
Councilor Connell was the voice of reason in the discussion, expressing his distaste for the CC dictating to retail establishments what to charge for bags.
This whole, time-consuming exercise debating a ban on plastic bags was unnecessary and ridiculous, in my opinion.

Maybe he and Betsy can find a way to deport these special needs kids as they are no more useful than war heroes that were captured.

I would like to add that it was and is a great move to put thousands of kids in cages as they will not be clogging up the school system and costing a whole bunch of money.

Both women are so much in fantasy land that it makes me ashamed of my own gender. How can these women be so willing to ban all cars and planes, tear down every building in the country and murder all the cows because of their gas problems. In addition these women support infanticide.

Here are some facts:

According to data from the US Census Bureau, the average gender pay gap in the United States is around 19.3%, meaning that a woman working a full-time, year-round job earns 80.7% as much as her male counterpart earns. That gap can be larger or smaller, depending on the state someone lives in.

Just over a year ago, in July of 2017, the Centers for Disease Control released the results of a long-range study of murders of women in 18 states, concluding that from 2003 to 2014, 10,018 women were murdered, half of those by a current or former romantic partner. Of those partners, 98 percent were men. That’s 5,000 women murdered over 11 years by intimate partners in just 18 states.

On October 7, 2016, during the 2016 United States presidential election, The Washington Post published a video and accompanying article about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and television host Billy Bush having “an extremely lewd conversation about women” in 2005. Trump and Bush were in a bus on their way to film an episode of Access Hollywood (now Access), a show owned by NBCUniversal. In the video, Trump described his attempt to seduce a married woman and indicated he might start kissing a woman that he and Bush were about to meet. He added, “I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”

If you cannot have an intelligent discussion, then you should be banned.

Anyway ask yourself why it matters unless men and women live in separate households and aren’t sharing their incomes: this wage gap stuff is as much about wiping American families from the face of the Earth forever as it is about handouts for lazy dumb women voters.
