TYLER STREET LAB: ANOTHER EXPERIMENT GONE AWRY FOR THE ‘ARMIES OF THE ROAD’

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY MARCH 25, 2019) — Before our regular column, allow THE PLANET to pay a tribute to former mayor Ed Reilly, whose passing came as sad news to all who knew and loved him. We had many encounters with Ed, going back to our youth at his parents’ store on the bend of North and Wahconah streets. We ran against him in ’91, and covered him as a columnist and on the radio as mayor. He was Pittsfield through and thorough — hard worker, good family man, and dedicated public servant. God speed, Ed Reilly, and our heartfelt condolence to his family.

———- 000 ———-

Good intentions may pave a road, but they can’t keep Tyler Street from becoming Dalton Avenue.

No matter how many taxpayer dollars they blow on the Road to Nowhere, that miracle mile will serve mainly as the east egress out of Dodge to the civilized hamlet of Dalton. A little tour of Tyler presents the picture of roadkill, immune to the Lazarus effect intended by public dollars. That money draws “gimme groups” ready to take the BICs, TIFs, and TDIs of the alphabet soup.

On the right turning from First Street, we find the new gas station. It replaced … uh … the old gas station.  In Pittsfield, “redevelopment.” On the left, the house abandoned by a psychic, whose hasty exit proved her prescience. Further up left, the parking lot of a recent murder. At right, the once-home of Mohawk Bottling Company, now off the tax rolls and oozing Goodwill. After that, we see Yosemite’s rival, Hess Forrest. Don’t go in without a guide, or you might end up in Louis Lent’s basement, now a “hip and vibrant” tattoo studio. There are 18,542 tattoo studios in the city, which makes THE PLANET wonder how middle school kids got their ink back in the day.

Bill Langley Studios once safe-harbored on Tyler Street in a lovely tan-brick building where heavenly windows used to shine. Langley’s dream of Langley Land, however, departed without explanation. Now the building hosts Mickey, Donald, and other cartoon ghosts who overbear the street’s muggers, buggers, bangers, gangers, dons, and cons. Even God left, and now Mr. Carver genuflects at the former church. He’s a “developer.” He wants the city to give him millions. The bells of St. Mary’s stay quiet with pitying tears.

Just before Tyler becomes Dalton you see the former Shedd’s plumbing company. For decades, Shedd built a business only a rogue could destroy. That rogue came after GE exited, setting Tyler Street on a course toward danger and dereliction. A martial arts studio moved in, but as urban archeologists know, when a martial arts studio takes over a once-thriving plumbing business, you’re looking at a future of liquor stores, non-profits, and nail salons.

Enter the Tyler Street Lab.

What is the lab? No one knows. At the Lab’s opening Saturday, director Umbrella Kate talked about “working toward a common goal.” That “goal,” of course, went undefined. She did call Tyler Street “eclectic,” a word indicating the variety of decomposition on the streets and in the shops.

The logo for the Tyler Street Lab consists of a test tube containing “a bubbling crude.” Experts in THE PLANET‘s Secret Lab tell us it’s a new kind of meth. The poor bastards that take it tend to be young, male, jobless, minorities with single-mom girlfriends, a.k.a. Pittsfield’s Finest. They just need understanding, something provided by Shirley Edgerton, well-known “community activist” who’s everywhere, everywhere. The good-hearted Shirl and Umbrella Kate. That may explain the sign at Tyler and First: “The Witch’s Cauldron, One Mile.”

The Tyler Street Lab may get lost in the scrum of agencies and not-for-profits eager to horn in on the free outlay from taxpayer purses. They include (deep breath):

  • The Morningside Initiative
  • The Tyler Street Collaborative
  • Better Block
  • Massachusetts Transformative Development Initiative
  • Working Cities
  • Berkshire Bridges
  • The Chill Zone
  • Office of Community Development
  • Goodwill
  • Jerry Mathers as the Beaver

Ponderous, as Marley said of Scrooge’s chain.

We have no doubt that the Tyler Street Lab will become a meeting point for the growing “armies of the road” who also congregate at the Intermodal, Persip Park, HON, and parking lots behind Lach’s. Drug trafficking and pan-handling to follow. Film at 11.

Those who have fallen through the cracks need to know the cracks go both ways. The ticket up and out isn’t through handouts or freebies, guns, or drugs. It’s through personal effort, hard work, initiative, ambition, education, and the refusal to be defined by well-intended “activists” who love to create “victims.”

The Lab has funding for a half a year, but our spies say that enough of the Kapanskis’ dough will find its way to Umbrella Kate and Shirl to keep it going at least until the day after Election Day in November.

Funny how these things work.

I wonder if the same people who made millions renovating North st will be the same people making millions renovating Tyler street. And on a parallel course, will the same people receive kickbacks?

How is it that a city whose tax base is supported largely by the elderly afford to do a full scale urban renewal project but at the same time be unable to fix its infrastructure? Yep, I be talking about the roads which every person in the city or visiting the city must bump and bang along daily.
In a couple of years Tyler street will have its lipstick applied and people driving through will say how nice it looks. And as long as they don’t go 5o feet off either side they might stay safe.

The city always has money for feel good make work projects that spin off mega dollars to special interests but something as vital as roads take a back seat. So what conclusions should I draw from such colossal political failure?

The sad fact is that local politicians and even many voters seem clueless in this area. Williamstown voters who voted overwhelmingly for recreational pot are now regretting their decision since they are now facing the realty of a 5 acre pot farm and just how it smells like a “skunk” and is destroying the value of homes in their upscale neighborhoods not to mention destroying their quality of life. (see the iberkshires article). It just seems to be one bad decision after another in this area.

The conclusion I have reached after reading Dan’s column and your comments is that there is a good chance the mayor will be turned out of office in the next election.
Accomplishments? Zilch.
Stewardship of taxpayer dollars? Poor.
Can’t wait to see who files their paperwork, this week, to run for mayor!

When I heard about the Tyler Street Lab, I was astounded that this is what city leaders think is part of a Tyler Street revitalization, but then realized that with their limited political vision for this area, that maybe they really do consider this progress.

Rather than providing actual jobs and much needed shops for the city, they would rather provide more social service assistance to local residents which is what this “lab” is all about.

The sad truth is that local politicians and so many voters in this area are clueless about figuring out the long term consequences of their decisions. An example of this is in Williamstown where local residents who voted overwhelmingly for recreational pot are regretting their decision upon discovering that a 5 acre pot farm smells like a skunk. They are now up in arms over their own decision.

Meanwhile in Dalton, the finance committee is giving warnings about shelling out 70 million for a new school. If the special interests there are anything like those in Pittsfield, the Dalton finance committee will get their warning shoved up their asses while a new school will be forced on the town.

Unlike Pissfield, the voters in dalton have a say – it’s going to a vote. If they want to vote to raise their taxes 500 average per year so be it, but at least it will be by majority vote. As Dan has written numerous times, the GOBSIGs were scared of another ci I authority crusade and refused to put it to vote. I hate this city for that.

When I failed to find a job during my 1 year long job search in Pittsfield years ago (Spring 2002 – Spring 2003), I realized the power the Good Old Boys held over me. I felt mocked by them for trying to earn a living in Pittsfield. The people who ran the show in Pittsfield blacklisted me. In the end, I would never find work in the Pittsfield area. I felt I had better odds winning the state lottery jackpot prize than finding a job in Pittsfield. Fortunately, my family relocated to southern NH after my parents retired (in mid-2003). Since the nearly 15 years since I moved away, Pittsfield politics saw major losses in population and jobs. The Good Old Boys and their vested interests never felt any economic pain while Pittsfield’s municipal taxes and debts skyrocketed upwards. It has been reported statewide and locally that Pittsfield is one of the most economically unequal areas in the state and nation. To illustrate, all K – 6 Pittsfield public school students now receive free meals due to the high poverty rate. I know where I stand in Pittsfield, and it ain’t a pretty picture! But, then again, neither is Pittsfield’s tanked local economy.

Mueller Mania:

As I’ve said before in this space: They ain’t got dick on Donnie.

Boris and Natasha may be guilty (they ain’t even U.S citizens), but Rocky and Bullwinkle walk.

“Doesn’t exonerate the president.”

Sort of like saying we find no evidence that Dan the Planet held up Cumby’s last night, but that doesn’t exonerate him.

There’s no evidence you’re running guns, drugs, or sex slaves, but that doesn’t exonerate you.

So there’s the first article of impeachment: President not exonerated.

1) He was completely exonerated on the collusion with the Russians, now we should investigate the Clinton campaign for the fake dossier, and the FBI/Justice department for continually lying to the FISA court about it.

2) Obstruction was neutral because if there was no crime in (1), there can obviously be no obstruction

Also, last I checked, in the USA, we are presumed innocent until PROVEN guilty. Therefore, no evidence of guilt = INNOCENT
Mueller should know better…

The nation’s psychiatric wards are preparing themselves for an influx of deranged liberals, as Robert Mueller’s official report into Russian collusion has now been filed with the attorney general.

As it now seems unlikely that the report will provide definitive proof that President Trump colluded with Russia during his 2016 campaign, psych wards and mental health facilities began bracing themselves for a wave of psychotic, disillusioned liberals to be checked in by their friends and family members.

As I’ve stated before in this space–you can’t expect the executive branch to check itself, constitutionally. That’s the job of the legislative and judicial branches.

And again–the only reason Nixon resigned was because Goldwater and other Republican senators went to the White House to tell Dickie that he didn’t have the votes to stave off removal from office (i.e., conviction in the US Senate).

Amusing how people think Trump would be gone because of anything short of impeachment AND conviction, or death.

I disagree with a significant portion of what Pat says ‘the left’ but she/he seems to have a lot of practical common sense. I think a lot of people would agree with those kinds of recommendations. Pat for city council?
I think the Tyler Street thing could be interesting for kids but more likely is going to be a washout and a job maker for the mayors progressive supporters/voters. I bet kids would like more time with their parents (those with three $10 an hr jobs) and safe streets to ride bikes on or walk along to visit friends. This Lab is way more bougie than Tyler Street.
Did anyone see they are putting a day care in Taconic High School? But they can’t fit the PHS kids? Is this for free childcare for the teachers? We are on the road to serfdom!!! Why are they training kids in childcare? Or maybe to house the babies of the teenagers? It’s run by the Y which is rather a boondoggle in itself.

There is one thing that the conclusion of the Mueller Investigation has definitively proven. As a country, we’re really nuts. This country has problems but they’re not going to be solved by endless criminal investigations, slimy politicians, or skirt-chasing presidents.
We’re a bunch of fruit loops living in the extremes – right and left – fueled by social media lies that we accept as truth, but only so long as they fit our own personal political beliefs and narrative.

I grew up in a time when extremes were the exception and not the rule. A time when we could have sensible arguments and discussions but each of us sacrificed a little of our positions to meet in the middle and get something accomplished that benefited us all.

For all of us, the Mueller lesson should be that it’s time for us to change. It won’t happen, but I can at least wish for it.

True. Very worrisome is their anti-semitism, infanticide, and wanting government to have total power over the people of this country. They would have government involved in every aspect of our lives. Let’s not forget taking guns and also taking over the police at the same time. Venezuela took all guns from its citizens in 2012. Now the people of that country are virtually helpless against a tyrannical government.

Yes, it could happen in this country if government is given total power and we get these extremist far left people in charge. They are appealing to people with grade school educations who believe that giving total power to the government in exchange for some freebies makes it all worth it. This is why they need to go younger and younger for the voting age to get the votes of all the youth that have been indoctrinated in the schools.

On Monday, a federal judge authorized conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch to depose Obama’s speechwriter-turned-Iran-echo-chamber Ben Rhodes after he defied a court order to answer questions under oath.

-REWIND-

Obama hack Ben Rhodes was ordered by Judge Royce Lamberth to answer questions under oath about the Benghazi scandal — but last week he defied the court order.

Even worse, the State Department and Justice Department were objecting to Judicial Watch who then sought an in-person interview with Mr. Rhodes – but Judicial Watch never backed down and won!

How about trials for treason, maybe the military tribunals that Lindsey Graham asked Judge Kavanaugh about. The chess master Trump will restore the rule of law to the country, most of which the elite Democratic socialists and deep state globalists have been exempt from paying for their crimes.

The real crime here was the Obama administration using the power of the federal government to spy on an opposition candidate. That makes Watergate look like a traffic ticket.

Hey, Fed Up:

You haven’t been in here long or you’re not paying very close attention–plenty of moon bats and fellow flying mammals who are always saying a lot in here (usually with awful grammar and spelling).

Read up.

Councillor Guy Smiley taking a sales job–imagine that.

Y’all need to come up with something else than “online” to explain the fall of the mall.

Holyoke Mall is hopping. Colonie Center is hopping.

I note that the mall opened at the same time the jobs started leaving GE–late 80s.

We just ain’t got the jobs, yo. Perhaps compare the Pitts and county censuses of 1990 and 2010.

And if the management of Regal isn’t competent enough to somehow let people know they’re open when the mall is closed, lord help them.

Maybe they can enlist the elementary school art students to make signs.

Hint: 1. paper 2. marker 3. tape

I don’t understand the frazzle over a Mall that hasn’t existed in 2 years. Literally.

We need a lot more retail stores in this area. There is hardly anywhere to shop if you want variety. It’s a miracle we have Target and Walmart or Berkshire County would be a complete shopping ghost town.

Simonelli and Kroll are bailing. You all know why.Nobody wants to be there for what is going to happen over the nextv 2and 1/2 years.Marchetti could have led this move for very conservative spending. As you can see all the people on the council have options. We dont. These people are so irresponsible you want to move.Dalton sees it.They don’t let the Head of the school department push them around.
This council grilled the airport guy for 2 hours about 12k and cant think of 1 question for McCandless who is by trying retirees in debt losing their homes and going without .Not 1 leader in this city.Mccandless will retire on at least125k per year. These people can’t run our schools which by the way suck.Great kids, good teachers, horrible principles and no control.I see the future and we are in the middle of a 2 year road to complete failure in every way.Shut PEDA down.Advertise free 50 acres of brown fields.

Well said SC.
We can’t keep spending and especially with no returns.
Did you see Kroll’s quote about the schools being a motivator for moving? It’s galling that this didnt occur to him sooner in his time of influence. I guess it didn’t matter to him personally so didn’t matter. Or maybe he tried, I wonder if the last cop screw up settlement disclosure didn’t have something to do with it.
And yes, AH kicked the ladder out and after he isolated himself with lots of really nasty acts for her benefit. Well, karma is a boomerang.
Newton is really really nice. Good schools and nice parks, less crime. You can job with out speeding 18 wheelers the cops never stops Good luck, I hope it’s a fresh start.

Good material SC. But you can whack these people up side of the head with common sense and it is like punching Casper the ghost. They don’t even know you are there. Nothing will change as long as material things are important to powerful people.

Johnny boy Krol was a good servant for the lefties.
He followed their agenda to a tee. Then when his crowning glory of replacing Fred Lantz at the DA’s office came time to occursomebody kicked the ladder out on him. He didn’t understand in the lefty pecking order he would drop behind Moon + Guel for obvious reasons.
Almost feel bad for you J Krol. I don’t though because you have been a snarky creep in most of your dealings.

I thank JK for his service. Never really liked the smart ass, but his heart was in the right place and he tried hard…like he said the energy in Pitts is gone…sucked dry by a secretary turned politician…now if only Tyer would go away that would be great…

Krol helped the energy leave Pittsfield. He’s part of the problem, was never part of the solution.

I do not think his heart was in the right place as far as the general population goes. If it was on one day I missed it. His tenure will fade fast in the memories of Pittsfield voters. But that is better than to be forever negatively remembered…like Doyle.

Tyer and her merry band of buffoons have candidates ready to go for Simonelli and Krol. She’s going to try to get rid of Connell, Mazzeo and Morandi. Let’s hope Mazzeo can oust Tyer.

Excuse my ignorance this time, but what is the point of the City Council?

What exactly do it do? What can it do?

Seems like the mayor has all the power, except for City departments, which seem to be powers unto themselves–and not responsive to the citizens.

So what does it matter who is on the Council?

“Pothole Tyer” needs to move on. Whatever she was trying to do it did not work. Crime is out of control. She seems to spend too much time and energy on the la ti da crowd and neglecting basic needs.

They just follow the old saying…”figures don’t lie, but liars figure “. We need Terry Kinnas to go through that school budget, like in the past. I loved watching the various overpaid deputies squirm as he questioned their shenanigans.

I miss you Terry, I hope you are doing well.

Tyer is a financial incompetent.Heres what Marchetti CAN do with the school budget,he can cut it.The council cant tell them How to spend money but they Can tell them How much they have to spend.2019 is the year we start a collaspe. This council is be holding to Tyer and Mccandless.Pittsfield failed. No amount of money will makes schools a teaching enviroment.Every year they blame it on money. They continue to to fail,Taylor is in financial elitist never never land. They keep throwing money at teachers to shut up.Principles are awlful.Principles and assistants are teachers who could not work with kids any more.Pittsfield schools suck, get out of town.Go to anytown and stop your car and that school system is better.Check out Westfield.Exact population 41k and it is a very successful system who got their budget cut.

Thank you SC! Yes, we have really lousy schools that can’t be fixed. 6 or 7 years and no improvement/growth seen in Pittsfield Middle Schoos. High Schools are largely crap for a state that has the best education system in the US. Taconic is an expensive bad joke. I suspect stupid people can’t administer and therefore it will never will get better in Pittsfield schools. I was excited that the State might take over. Nope.
