PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION FEB. 2-4, 2018) — For The Weekend Edition, we get away from Pittsfield’s politics, the kind on full display at a revelatory meeting of the city council’s finance committee over what may well be the last straw that sinks the city into a morass of debt and financial failure. We speak of the city’s ineptitude — Tyer, Kerwood, and a boatload of consultants who have already skunked $6 million out of taxpayers. The committee came up big, voting 3-2 to send a recommendation to reject the administration’s plan on water upgrades that will raise water and sewer fees 400%.

Fear not. THE PLANET will rain fire next week. For now, it shall be the frivolity of utter insignificance.

Speaking of spawtz …

This Sunday, THE PLANET gets to enjoy the pleasure of playing on the house’s money. We refer to Super Bowl LII. That’s 52 in Roman numerals for all those who don’t speak Roman. The Big Game, also known as the New England Patriots Invitational for the team’s absolute dominance going on two decades, brings with it the ultimate no-lose proposition. We would like the Patriots to win again, of course, but we shall also be happy should the Philadelphia Eagles pull off the upset, for two reasons:

(1) The Eagles have been “our team” going back to the days of Sonny Jurgenson, Norm Snead, Pete Retzlaff, and Tommy McDonald.

(2) They are the favorite team of our best friend in the world, retired editor of The Syracuse Post-Standard Gary Van Dusen.

As for (1) it’s odd how that came about. In 1961, my brother bought a football magazine with Jimmy Brown on the cover. Pete was a huge Browns fan, and his hero was, of course, the bruising Brown, #44 out of storied Syracuse. The Boston Patriots of the old NFL were one year young and along with its league still trying to prove itself a legitimate competitor with the NFL. Most fans around here, therefore, were New York Giants fans, since we got the Giants games every Sunday on WTEN-10 out of Albany. The magazine cover photo showed great Brown lugging the ball surrounded by a rock pile of friendly white jerseys and a bunch of Philadelphia Eagles in their Kelly green. I loved the Eagles helmets, with the silver wings lacing the sides. It became enough to win me over, but we also loved the Browns because of Jimmy Brown and the Syracuse connection. Incidentally, we still have that magazine.

One of our great moments as a young fan came in the 1964 NFL title game, when Blanton Collier‘s Cleveland Browns shut out Don Shula‘s Baltimore Colts, 27-0, a game we watched on TV to the play-by-play of a man who later became a dear friend and long-time business partner, the late, great broadcaster Ken Coleman. To add to this fan’s confusion, the Tittle-Shofner-Morrison-Roubestelli-Patton-Huff Giants also became a fave because we saw them on TV so much. We still feel the sting of the 1963 title game, when the Giants lost to the Bears.

THE PLANET was, you might say, a football itinerant. That all changed later with the New England Patriots, and not the presen bandwagon franchise that seemingly gets to the Super Bowl every year. We’re talking the Patriots of Gino Capelletti and Babe Parilli, Jim Plunkett and Randy Vataha, Steve Grogan and Russ Francis — a team that wavered from respectable to putrid — 1-15 putrid (1991). That was, of course, in the BRK era: Before Robert Kraft.

Regarding (2) Gary and THE PLANET have long been sending weekly e-mails with our predictions for the 18 weeks the NFL is in season. We each prognosticate the scores for the Patriots and Eagles games. All along, we’ve been saying Super Bowl LII would feature our teams, and we were right. The Eagles have never won a Super Bowl, going 0-2, the last loss being in 2005 as another Syracuse product, Donovan McNabb, led Philly in a fatal confrontation with … the Patriots.

With that win, the Patriots became the first team in league history to win the Super Bowl three in four years. Amazingly, in one of the greatest sports achievements of all time, they are in a position of doing that again on Sunday, 13 years later. The previous two Patriot wins in the Super Bowl came in games that featured the impossible: Malcolm Butler‘s game saving interception of the Seahawks’ Russell Wilson from the 1 yard line (you don’t hand the ball off to Lynch??!!!) in SB XLIX and last year’s comeback from a 28-3 deficit with two minutes left in the third quater to stun the Falcons in overtime (the Super Bowl’s first ever to need an extra frame).

Super Bowl LII, the Patriots record 10th appearance in the game, one might follow the script and it might not. With five Super Bowl victories in the bank, Patriots fans can relax this Sunday, win or lose. The wise guys in Vegas expect a definitive win. The press, too, as in this sampling from Reuters: “In a league that does not want dynasties, the New England Evil Empire [has become] a championship machine that operates with ultimate efficiency.”

Patriot Nation loves being the Evil Empire, the greatest dynasty (ESPN, NFL Network, Sports Illustrated, etc.) of all time. However, if the Iggles can win, we shall still celebrate, and just as hard, for our NFC team, for the cool helmets, and most of all, for Gary Van Dusen.

We have a case of Dom 1982 chillin’, and we and friends will enjoy every last drop.

Love live the Patriots. Long live the Eagles.

To make this weekend interesting, send in your predicted score to THE PLANET. We’ll send a great gift to the person who gets it the closest.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

I really feel apathy for the young man in Adams who was roughed up, detained with a gun pointed at him by the Adams Police after the shooting. Yes, they were doing their job, but somehow have an ego preventing them from an apology to this man and his mother, and handling the PR. correctly. Just not right in my opinion.

Spa did you see the dash cam videos from released by the Adams PD? The police and the young man acted very professional. The young man handled himself well as did the officers. His family should be proud of him. There was a shooter at large and he just was in the wrong place at the wrong time purely by accident. The officers apologized to him immediately . He sat in the cruiser for 1 min 40 sec. and the whole stop last just over 4 min.. Here are the uncut dash cam videos and audio from both cruisers
.
This one is from the cruiser that pulled him over. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1pxuoKP-7g

This one is from the backseat of the cruiser he was detained in.

Racecard crap! This guy has had no negative behavior or arrests. I am not anti Police whatsoever, but I cannot imagine what this was like. I am caucasion. As I said, in my opinion it could have been handled much better. Even the Police can do some things better, and i this situation could have done much better without
the Ego attitude.

He was stopped because he matched the description of one of the suspects. That’s it. Had nothing to do with racial profiling. As soon as they were sure he was not one of the suspects they let him go with an apology.
I’ve got news for you, white people are stopped by the police too when they match suspect’s descriptions and have had guns pointed at them too. You just don’t hear about it because the race card isn’t pulled.

This is easy,Patriots 33 and the Eagles 14 because Brady can taste if healthy 3 more titles.Taken for granted is that the 5 time Superbowl champ has never played better.Brady would be the number 1 pick in a draft held tomorrow. He always starts slow and if they score early you can turn the channel to see who Trump fired Superbowl Sunday.

Do you ever wonder why Pence and Ryan and Kelley and Spicer and Preibus kiss his ass? I think Trump took them all to a pee party and filmed it and is making them dance to his wishes.

How did pence ever sire children …he looks like he is afraid of his own shadow. he went to a football game and ran out the door because a player knelt….how awful it must have been for him…

When Pats win home playoff games they are 19-0 in Super Bowl. When Patriots Play atvNFC Conference Super Bowl site, they are 19-0 When Brady wakes up in the Morning on Super Bowl Sunday, they are 19-0 Now,you’re probably saying nonsense, nonsense, but keeping in the theme of the City’s nonsense lately-(proposals for toters and water) why not stretch the truth, ala Trump. If the Pats were playing anywhere but Minnesota I’d pick the Beagles. But this is Super Bowl being played in the State of Tommy’s childhood refuge. Pats Shine in this one, too much Gronk.

Marchetti,Yawn dropped ball on future debt considerations concerning projects, one done and the other pending. You will have chaos with the new water-sewer rates. Rents will be raised and people will abandon for cheaper housing and living in general. Keep neglecting roads, changing garbage, donating to private companies and TIFS, Gifts and potholes that can’t be fixed.

This city absolutely NEEDS to run and elect an Independent candidate for mayor in the next election. I know that a conservative wouldn’t have a chance with the mindset of people in this area, so an independent candidate is the next best thing. It is imperative for the future survival of this area that this happens. Dan V. will you run as an independent? Anyone else?

What the city needs is a forensic audit. Tell us how much debt the city has and what the annual interest is on it. Tell us what century it might get paid down in.

And then start tossing the irresponsible people out the door.

Dan can’t run for anything here, he does not live in Pittsfield. He would have to be elected via write in votes and no way that’s going to happen.
If an independent with more balanced views ran they would need financial backing and would have needed to start campaigning and being visible and involved with the public already.
Sadly, it ain’t gonna happen.

Employees are one thing, elected officials another. Town is free to hire out of towners for any position. But to run for mayor or councilor at large you must reside here. And to run for ward councilor I believe you must reside in that ward.
There is an important qualification to be hired by the city – you must be a friend or relative of someone within the administration. And that’s really the only qualification.

Dan, do you actually have to reside in Pittsfield to run, that is your primary residence is here? Otherwise some slum lord from another state could run as they own property here too.

Technically, all is you need is a “legal address” in the city to run for office. It can even be a P.O. box. So, actual residency is not required.

Upon reading this, you may have to be a voter in Pittsfield to qualify. So if Dan is a registered voter in Stockbridge I don’t think he qualifies?

I think all Americans should impartially review what is in the memo. This is NOT about whether or not you like President Trump. This is much bigger than that according to those who have read the memo. This is about possibly using the government to spy on the opposing side. You wouldn’t like it if it was being done to your side.

Most people like fairness in sports. So too should we demand that everyone play by the rules in politics. If we don’t then we will have people using our intelligence and even the police to go after political enemies or anyone who doesn’t think a certain way. If you think that law enforcement has too much power now, just keep looking the other way when abuses happen at the top and the situation will get even worse. That’s not the America that I want to live in.

OK, so wait. Let me see if I have this right.

1. Clinton pays for opo research (dirt) on Trump.

2. Steele/Fusion GPS make it up–the dossier.

3. Steele then plants (if not writes the thing himself) that dossier info with “news” outlets.

4. The FBI/DOJ take the dossier to the FISA court.

5. Then on the basis of that dossier and the “news”!!!?!?!?!? stories planted by Steele as corroboration!!!?!??! of the dossier, the FISA court issues a warrant to spy on a US citizen, who just happens to be involved in the Trump campaign.

A court actually thinks that a freakin’ “NEWS” story is
a legitimate legal basis to issue a spy warrant?

Wa?

Wait, gets better. The NYT and WaPo publish editorials yesterday urging PRIOR FREAKING RESTRAINT.

And their minions, otherwise called Democrats, join in with pouty faces to say that the sky is falling.

So the question is, Why read/listen/give credence to any mainstream “news” source or vote for or give credence to any Democrat ever again?

Memo alone shows that at least three (alleged) crimes were committed:

1. Omission of evidence from the FISA application by FBI/DOJ (lying to the court). Namely, the Clinton/DNC connection with Fusion GPS and the funding of the dossier.

2. Steele’s divulging of information to the media.

3. Steele lying to the FBI.

Watching Finance committee would be a lot more interesting if we could have had an exchange between the original builder and the consultant. The Builder seems to be able to tell how much a new upgrade could happen for lot less, probably tens of millions. We can’t really expect the current council to know anything about constructing a facility, unless we want to believe everything this Consultant is offering without any rebuttle. Let’s reach out to one of our own, who knows this project.

Re: Open Letter to Dan Valenti

Dear Dan Valenti:

I understand you know all of this, but I will say it anyway. I enjoy reading your daily blog with readers’ comments. I admire your civic participation in Pittsfield politics and beyond. We have differing opinions on politics, as we live in a free country.

I wish to inform you that you do not make any real difference in politics, especially in Pittsfield politics, despite your good intentions and love for Pittsfield. In all of my lifetime of +42-years, Pittsfield politics has not changed. If fact, as you point out, Pittsfield has gone from bad to worse with its one political party, Good Old Boys, political hacks, corrupted governments, depressed local economy with large losses in population and jobs, acute economic inequality, and the growing underclass.

Like you, I blog. Moreover, I once thought about running for office in Pittsfield. Like you, I was not pre-selected by the Pittsfield political machine and wouldn’t have had a fair shot of winning.

Pittsfield politics is full of mean-spirited people who spread hurtful rumors against average citizens who choose to participate in state and local government. If you ran for state and local political office, you would have a big target on your back for speaking out about the poor condition Pittsfield is in.

Pittsfield politics is totally predictable. Every fiscal year, they raise the operations budget by 5%, while raising the capital budget by well over $10 million in new municipal debts, while the OPEB budget accrues to hundreds of million of dollars in municipal debts. Pittsfield politics has a shrinking and depressed local economy, with an indebted and unsustainable financial system near the levy ceiling under Proposition 2.5.

I hope you keep up your good work. However, Pittsfield politics is never going to change, especially by you! You are not Pittsfield’s savior!

Best wishes,

Jonathan Melle

The timeline for the new school and the waste water plant projects seem very funny. it’s almost as if the School project was put well before the water situation. Wonder why? Are new schools funding more important than water? Water should have been the priority, but then maybe citizens might not have wanted the school
…that was taken care of by our bias (building needs commision) loaded with sigs. There is an opportunity on the water side savings part of it, we might actually have an advocate ( Gaetani) that’s if they haven’t yet pissed him off. So,the latest is Bruce Collingwood is being made the scapegoat.

Curious as to how much of all this is going on the taxpayer credit card and burying us in debt. We always talk about the national debt and how bad it is for the country but what about city debt? Exactly what are the effects on the city budget? How much of the collected taxes go to pay off debt each year and who are the lucky banks that receive so much taxpayer money?

Might be fun if Dan could have a couple of people on his show to discuss. Would probably need to be a 2 hour show. Or maybe Mr.Gaetani could do such a show. Let us get some of this out in the open.

Believe Gaetani is about to experiment with a live call- in show. Hey, good luck to him, people could actually get the facts about this project that will now be driven by fear,.. It’s funny, he had been calling for the former Commissioners ouster, and talked at nausium about sky high rates years before, now we finally know what he was talking about. Mazzeo asked Kufflinks at the Finance meeting how we got to this point,Gaetani has been telling us for years?

Do NOT expect to get anything resembling a straight answer from Mr Kerwood. He is where he is because he is a loyal soldier. He is an experienced story spinner from way back on the city council and you wanted to just put on your ear muffs once he got started. And when he is done you just shake your head wondering what the hell he was talking about.

I just happened to catch a portion of the school committee meeting and Dennis Powell was speaking. Dennis do yourself a favor and Don ‘t talk.

You should have heard him during the debate over changing Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day – he went off on a 15 minute detour about black cowboys. I agree – don’t talk Dennis.

Congratulations to Pittsfield’s newly anointed Business Development Czar. Michael Coakley is reputed to be a solid individual, I wish him success in his latest endeavor.
With all skepticism, however his work experience and marketing methodology at Winstanley Assoc. seem to closely parallel John Krol’s Oneeighty media venture.Mayor Taxing Toter in his public introduction appeared to be the lubricating harbinger of his rocky road, stating economic development takes a long time. She also announced that his family has been in Lenox for 20 years. I have known the Coakley’s for much longer.
Good luck Mike.

The G Man was the loudest proponent of the next mega project and was fallen on deaf ears because good ol boys ego’s couldn’t stand his accomplishments and decided to make him a scapegoat with scare tactics and false innuendo. So what the guy was flamboyant, what is Trump?. Anyway, the water project is the biggest back breaker that Pittsdield has ever faced and it seems the only who know this is Mazzeo,Connell and maybe Moon,Connell and hopefully Rivers. Persips comments the other night sounded like questions from Massimiano at a school committee meeting back in the day,pay me now or pay me later? G-Man hopefully will donate his expertise so that the City of Pittsfield can restore and awake itself from what could be the financial destruction of this once great City.

I believe the Finance Committee is on Tonight at 8 pm ….watch as Marchetti tries to shut down G-Man as Persip asks silly questions and the Consultant chimes in with Fear and Loathing. Gaeani is the only one who can make this happen for the City, otherwise we’ll all be flushed down the toilet and we’ll do it without Drain-o.

As of Saturday night the Vegas point spread was 4.5 with the Patriots favored. And 79% of the money being wagered was going on the Eagles with those points. That means that a bunch of people do not think this will be a blowout in the Patriots favor. Should be a great football game and the winner will earn it.

One thing G has going for him is that he sincerely cares about the people in the city. I get the opposite vibe from the mayor. But she is the one with the poser and she will do as she pleases. So much like Trump. Stomping all over the flowers.

You have some other plan for the latest City debacle Shakes?….. would love to hear it? bottom line is Gaetani has been telling us at nauseum about the problems we would have, like him or not. The current Council is wondering how this all happened? The man was drawing pictures for krist sakes for the last wenty episodes.

G talks a lot about how much he cares, but he does zero to accomplish anything other than keeping a spotlight on himself. His shows are laughable and filled with errors. He proves he cannot accomplish basic math.

If his merit was half as much as his self aggrandizement, he would be credible, but it isn’t and he is jelly st a rude, ignorant person.
