PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION MARCH 30-APRIL 1, 2018) — Time to clean the palette with a bit or rhetorical sorbet, the taste of which shall take us away from the bitter aftertaste of politics gone bad. Our bit of whimsical repast serves up another of THE PLANET‘s Top Ten lists. Since music hath charms to sooth the savage angel, we present our list of Top Ten Greatest Rock-Pop Albums.  The only annotation required is to share one rule: No artist or band can be named more than once. We define a Top album this way: You love every cut on both sides.

  1. Rubber Soul by The Beatles — This linchpin album came after the early boy-meets (loses)-girl songs of the group’s first outings, works that have not been equalled for their infetious buoyancy. Rubber Soul offers the listener an intimacy with John, Paul, George, and Ringo not before heard or after. The string-drag on the acoustic tunes makes it sound like McCartney and Lennon are playing in your living room. This is THE PLANET’s “desert isle” album.
  2. Tommy by The WhoPete Townsend‘s towering rock opera did the nearly impossible by filling two albums (four sides) with zero filler or throwaway.
  3. Innervisions by Stevie Wonder — This soul-pop-rock-balladine dazzles in every aspect, with Stevie’s full musicianship — singer, songwriter, instruments, studio whiz — on irridescent display.
  4. Aqualung by Jethro TullIan Anderson‘s take on the well-intended hypocrisy of organized religion is brought to life by a band as tight as Scrooge‘s purse strings, pre-intervention.
  5. Led Zeppelin I by Led Zeppelin — The eponymous album by this explosive supergroup defined emotive hard rock at a time long before its subsequent degradation into death metal, speed metal, and the rest of the loud, nihilistic junk to follow. Page’s guitar. Plant’s vocals.
  6. Smokin‘ by Humble Pie — This album features driving songs delivered by rock’s greatest voice, Steve Marriott. Pay attention also to Jerry Shirley‘s outstanding drumming. Cymbals, high-hat, and splashes never sounded as sparkly.
  7. Diamond Dogs by David BowieGeorge Orwell‘s chilling and prophetic vision of dystopia inspired Bowie to his creative heights.
  8. Alone Together by Dave Mason — You probably have never heard of it, but one listen will convince you.
  9. Living in the Material World by George Harrison — We had a hard time selecting between this one by the former Beatle and his epic triple-disc All Things Must Pass. THE PLANET passed on the latter because of the third “jam” disc, which should have been cut. Material World includes songs Harrison wrote with his former mates from Liverpool but couldn’t squeeze into an album. “Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long” rivals “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun.”
  10. Between the Butons by The Rolling Stones — Like Rubber Soul, this is the band’s transition album as Mick, Keith, and the “bruffers” moved from raw Chicago blues to straight rock. Not a bad track on it.

We might be so bold as to add these albums, any of which could make the 10 list: I Stand Alone, Al Cooper; Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys; Axis: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix; American Beauty, The Grateful Dead; Horizontal, The Bee Gees; Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath, Black Sabbath; Anything by The Beatles; Where’s the Money?, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks; Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd.

There she be. THE PLANET‘s next Top Ten shall be movies. Meantime, let us know which 10 albums you would pick for the island. Which ones have we left out?

Have a great weekend everybody.

A very good list, Dan. It’s always too tempting to put Sgt. Pepper’s at the top of any Beatles list, but I find that Rubber Soul and Revolver were albums that changed rock and roll and helped it to move more easily into the Sgt. Pepper era. And I love that you chose, our of all of the Beatles’ single-days, a Harrison album, as he was so underappreciated during the Fab Four days.

Oh Dan…I love George Harrison; truly amazing guitarist. But I think John Lennon’s post Beatles career/work surpassed George’s. Shaved Fish, in fact, would be on my top 10 even including the Ono track.

Humble Pie got recognition. Very pleased, Steve Marriott is absolutely one of the best blues/rock singers ever; and highly underrated.

Are You Experienced? – Hendrix
Get Yer YaYas out – Stones (closest to a live experience of any live album ever)
Fillmore East – Allman Brothers with Duane
Freak Out – Zappa
London Calling – The Clash
Talking Heads 77
John Lee Hooker Live at Cafe au Go-Go
Sex Machine – James Brown
Sly & The Family Stone Greatest Hits (my replacement for your Humble Pie album. Like them, but they don’t make the cut)
Sam Cooke & Bumps Blackwell Orchestra.

IF a Beatles album were in my top 25 it would be Rubber Soul. I love Tomme, but like Quadrophenia better. LOVE Bowie but would probably choose Ziggy or his live double album. Zepplin…you bring I, I’ll bring II and everyone will be happy. Dave Mason would certainly be in my second 10, and he plays around here from time to time; at least annually in Norfolk. Still a great show. I am a Stones guy, but wanted to play by your rules. Otherwise Exile and Beggar’s Banquet woulda been on the list. Thanks.

In the Eagle today Amanduh Drain was trying to give credit to igor Greenwald and Dennis Powell for trying to put together an Independent board to oversee the Pittsfeld Police Department, nowhere in her article was it mentioned Mr. Gaetani’s petition to the Ity Council Tuesday night while she Was There, trying to do just that.

When Gaetani killed the sewer project, Drane never mentioned his name as the orchestrated of the demise of that sewer project also.

You can read the real story of those two proposed petitions in todays Pittsfield Gazette.

Clearly, those who depend on their news solely from the Berkshire Eagle are being kept in the dark and are not even aware of it.

Gaetani does not need the Eagle because he has a terrific Show, the Gaetani Pittsfield News Hour and he is a writer of Commentary’s, Letters to the Editor and appearances at all City Council Meetings and Boards. The fact that we are aware that the Eagle bias newspaper we should all cancel our subscriptions to this Rag as there are other sources for news, when you can’t get the real story from a local newspaper, it’s time to penalize them in any way we can.

I spoke to Gaetani this morning and of course we talked politics and asked him is there any way to get rid of the Mayor and the seven City Councilors who are rubber stamps for her? He stated indeed there is, but it won’t be easy. He said the key to getting rid of the dead wood lies solely on the shoulders of the 21,000 registered voters who didn’t vote in the last election.

Gaetani stated that if a non-establishment candidate for Mayor surfaces, or one of four Councilors,Mazzeo,Connell overs or Morandi were to run for Mayor, the twenty one thousand usual non-voters imdeed, might come out in droves to vote out the entrenched buffoons that are in office now.

He claims that Secretary Tired, as he calls her,is already burnt toast and is a lame duck already. He said says she doesn’t have a single accomplishment to show for, he said he defeated her badly on the sewer project and soon will also dump the water project. He said that Krol who carried water for Tyer thinks he can be Mayot, buthe himselr is tied to Tyer’s failures and he himself is a buffoon and easily beatable.

I asked the Wiz if he is thinking about public office in 20-20 ,he states that he is very busy with several projects he is working on, but says he always keeps an open mind.

Gaetani says he gets his greatest thrills when he can save the taxpayer’s hard earned dollars. He stated to date,he has save the taxpayers 175 mil and soon another 75 mil for a total of 250 million.

I asked him what he thought his greatest accomplishment? He is very proud of the fact the residents are drinking the water from the Krofta Engineering Corp.

So I just came back from the Ashuleot Trail where I thought I would try to limber up the old bones. Entered at the first mall entrance. Within the first 100 yards I saw probably at dozen large dog turds, most barely off the trail but at least 3 right on the trail.
Gauging by the size of the stool matter I would guess the dispenser was rather large.

And I would like to take this moment to nominate the owner of this dog for ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR award. Besides adults many children walk and ride their bicycles on this wonderful trail and to desecrate it in this manner is unconscionable.

Not sure what the dog or owners residency is. But if there were a camera set up on the shed at the beginning it would probably pick up the perp. Gauging by the varying stages of decay it is a regular ritual..perhaps daily. If they could get the owner and dog in the act and put the picture on facebook that would be great.

Re: Boston Globe’s myopic editorial is right on target!

Politics is often a top-down process decided by oligarchs heavily influenced by the vested and special interests. That is why so many people do not participate in their government or vote in their “elections”. If you stand in the way of politicians and their agenda-influenced interests, you will face reprisals. So why bother to have a voice in our so-called democracy?

Beacon Hill politics are politics at its worst and politics of the banal! The Boston Globe’s myopic editorial is right on target! The Speaker of the House and State Senate President have near total dictatorial powers. The Legislators are more like bureaucrats who get rewarded for following orders without conscience. If you don’t follow the “Speaker for Life” and Senate President, you will lose! To illustrate, the first item and vote on legislation of the state Legislature last year (2017) was a vote for a second pay raise that largely increased the pay and benefits of the Speaker of the House and State Senate President!

People who work on Beacon Hill fear reprisals from people like Stan Rosenberg, who is facing an ongoing ethics investigation for his husband’s alleged criminal behavior. The political system is rigged with a one-party dominance from a majority of Legislators who run in non-competitive “elections” and often vote unanimously in favor of bills to further their political careers.

The reason why I write that the Globe’s editorial is myopic is because the same goes on the local and public school system level of Massachusetts government. Most of Massachusetts’ government is ran by incumbents, career political hacks, connected insiders, and Good Old Boys!

– Jonathan Melle

https://www.printfriendly.com/p/g/fXF9NX

“[Beacon Hill] Lawmakers collectively have made the Senate presidency — and the House speakership — such powerful positions that they’re ripe for abuse. Over many years, lawmakers have elected, and then reelected, leaders who punish dissent. They’ve let leadership tell them how to vote, forfeiting their independence in order to be team players. An improbable number of votes are unanimous. Protected by uncompetitive elections, the overwhelmingly Democratic Legislature has turned Beacon Hill into something that looks more like hierarchical law firm than a deliberative body.”

Has anyone seen the new Roseanne Barr show? I watched both episodes last night. It is hilarious. It had extremely high ratings for its opening 2 shows.

Loved the line where the Laurie Metcalf character enters Roseanne’s home and says “Hey Deplorable.” The Laurie character is a liberal while Roseanne is a Trump supporter. Laurie also sports the obligatory “Nasty Woman” t-shirt and pussyhat in her opening scene. Extremely funny show that makes fun of politics at a time when we really need it.

No Dusty all the late night shows are making fun of just President Trump. The left is off limits for the most part since Hollywood is made up of Progressives with very few exceptions. Progressives really can’t laugh at themselves. They take their mission of big government control far too seriously.

This is what makes the Roseanne Barr show unique. It’s not politically correct at all.

Sorry School Committee, but you can’t blame the death of small cities across Massachusetts on conservatives. What conservatives? If you are talking about Charlie Baker, the most popular governor in the country, who also happens to be one of the very few Republicans in the state, you couldn’t be more wrong. Massachusetts is ruled exclusively by Progressives. Charlie Baker is better than a Progressive, but is still not conservative or independent enough for me.

I didn’t hear you complaining about the demise of small cities across the state during the reign of Deval Patrick which is when these cities including our own really staring going downhill.

The solution for all of these problems is less government radicalism and more government practicality. Less government and more creative solutions to our problems of fewer jobs and lots of people hooked on illegal substances. Adding pot to the mix hasn’t helped the problem of keeping people alert enough to do their jobs and think logically. Stopping the drugs coming from Mexico and stopping doctors giving opioids to patients is a start to the huge problem of thousands of Americans being destroyed daily by drugs which is bad for families and leads to poverty. Build that wall President Trump!!!!

Obama seemed to treat Putin with way more respect than I was comfortable with, but Progressives were terrified of offending anyone so did nothing as Putin went wild with power. God forbid we went to war while Progressives were in charge. It would spoil their image as the doves of peace. So there was no way Progressives could be seen as aggressive toward another country. They left that inevitable task to the Republicans who they knew they could then blame for being war mongers when Russia was out of control like it is now thanks to lack of intervention by the Obama administration.
