(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 1-3, 2018) — Indulge THE PLANET in a thought experiment. Picture this:

A black police officer responds to a report of burglary in a section of a large city. She arrives at the scene of a house and sees a white, 16-year-old male sits behind the wheel of a Jeep that turns out to be stolen. The teen runs the officer over. Three other white male teens ages 15, 16, and 17, emerge from the house and flee. The officer is rushed to a hospital, where she dies a couple hours later.

Within a day, police have apprehended the four youths, charging them with murder, burglary, and other counts. Police say the teens have hit three houses that day. Their haul includes a Heckler & Koch 9mm handgun, two 15-round clips, an X-Box, an Apple watch, an HP laptop computer, and two Alexa speakers. Oh, and the young gourmands, police say, also stole a bag of Doritos and a bag of Cheetos.

It turns out on further investigation that the caseworker of the white youth who crushed to death the black officer had three days earlier recommend that the young charge be turned over for house arrest while he awaited sentencing for a previous car theft. The stellar lad had also been accused of stealing two other autos. Two of the three cases were dropped. He routinely ducked court meetings and was allowed to simple walk out of the juvenile detention center where he lived. No consequences. Several days later, a grand jury indicted the four youths on counts of first degree murder.

Do you think the Black Lives Matter people along with the progressives and similar others would ignore this case? Would The Rev. Al Sharpton and his crew leave it alone? What about the Hollywood do-gooders or, heaven help us, The Berkshire Brigade?

You’re right when you answer: “Not a chance.”

The race card would be whipped out from the bottom of the deck quicker than Yancy Derringer could cheat Brett Maverick in strip poker.

Well, this very incident occurred on May 21 in Baltimore, Md., as described except for one small detail. The colors were reversed, with black white and white black. Already, these four innocent lads from the ‘hood have the usual apologists rushing to the defense. The youths didn’t mean to do it. They’re “misunderstood.” They haven’t been dealt a “fair hand” by life. They’re “good kids,” really. They can’t be blamed for being young, ad infinitum ad nauseum. THE PLANET hears little talk of personal responsibility and how we all most own our actions, good or bad. We hear less about the family of the dead officer.

That you likely haven’t heard about the case makes a sobering comment on America, circa 2018. This is an America where intelligent discourse on serious topics such as race relations does not happen. In today’s incendiary rhetorical climate, it can’t happen. This is an America where the 24/7 “news” cycle of social media, cable TV, and celebrity gossip dictates the most vital problem now facing the country: ABC’s cancellation of Roseanne Barr’s smash hit comedy.  The nine episodes already aired proved to be a network goldmine, but in the present culture of race baiting, ABC didn’t hesitate to pull the show. It even received credit for the overreaction.

These are not rational times. Witch hunts involving race, gender, and political loyalties draw outrageous scrutiny in cyberspace, particularly in determining “news” value, particularly among the millennials and younger, that most coveted demographic. That’s why the Baltimore story hasn’t gone past a regional level. The color’s off.

The story and coverage does prove one thing, however, about the state of journalism today: The agenda-setting function of what we have to loosely label “the press.” Dominant media determine the issues, and a country whose people treat critical thinking and independent judgment as the plague get the “news” coverage they deserve.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

The operative color in the story is blue, not black or white. The supreme court ruled that the death sentence and life without parole are not legal sentences for those under 18, even if they reach other thresholds for trying them as adults. Each state deals with the ramifications of this ruling differently because there is no prescriptive guidance beyond that.

Did the officer follow protocol? Did the officer wait for backup? was the officer prepared to use deadly force as they were attacked? The situation is more nuanced than described here. Regardless, no police officer should lose their life while on duty, period.

BLM is not about protecting youth of color that commit heinous crimes, it is about protecting innocent people of color from police execution and brutality. No trial, no jury, no judge. NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

BLM is a specific issue that the alt-right muddies with slop like the above hypothetical argument.

Of course there’s a double standard. Still waiting for Samantha Bee to be fired and all her shows cancelled.

    • Pat
      June 1, 2018 at 6:24 am #

The double standard with Samantha Bee, who broke the cardinal rule of the MeToo movement which is respect for women….ALL women, is outrageous. We have the two issues of race and gender and Progressives show their hypocrisy at every turn. Conservative women are fair game. Any woman is fair game who is NOT a Progressive. This needs to end. Put these people in power again and this country will become an extremely unfair and even dangerous place to live if you are not one of them.

So white conservatives live dangerously in America. You must rewrite the rules so that white Republicans are safer in our country.
Trump promised Pat and other voters that Health Insurance would be Better,Cheaper, than Obama healthcare by June 1st 2018….

It isn’t just white conservatives who are the enemy according to Hollywood and the liberal media. It’s anybody who is not part of the hip Progressive movement. This is the environment they have created in this country. They set people up against one another. The old divide and conquer.

Joe Scarborough this morning urging everyone to vote us back to sanity in November. Really?!? Really Joe? I have no faith that putting these people back in charge will restore sanity to this country. Just the opposite in fact.

The me too movement has nothing to do with “respect all women”. You misappropriate the concept to fit your narrow, bigoted, victimized world view.

The #MeToo movement is ONLY about sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. It is not gender or race specific.

          • Pat

You are correct, calling someone names in public can be harassment.

HOWEVER, you are wrong to misappropriate the #MeToo movement to make your point because it is specifically about workplace sexual assault and harassment. Your statements only reinforce the bigoted opinions you regurgitate. They are misinformed opinions and not facts.

          • Pat
            June 1, 2018 at 8:34 am #

I disagree. The whole point of the MeToo movement is respect of women which includes sexual assault, but also harassment not just in the workplace. The whole spirit of the MeToo movement is respect of women. The comments of Samantha Bee toward a woman is so beneath the spirit of respecting women.

These people put down President Trump by doing so much worse than what they are accusing him of doing. Hollywood and the media are a cesspool of hypocrisy.

So you’re saying that Samantha Bee should be fired for using a word that men have used so often to describe women who don’t put out, respond to cat calls, or display some sort of common sense that makes a man look stupid? Or are you saying she should be fired because she used a vulgarity to describe Donald Trump’s grown daughter? The comment crossed a line, but I don’t see it as a fireable offense.

  6. Pat
    June 1, 2018 at 6:41 am #

Hollywood, as usual, showing its true colors. Sally Field, the flying nun of all people, coming forward and saying she agreed with the vile name referring to Trump’s daughter except that that name was apparently too good for Ivanka, as she is holding her child. Hollywood, the liberal media are all in bed with these Progressive Democrats and putting them in power again will be a HUGE mistake for this country. They get away with anything they want now. If they are in power again, there will be NOBODY to put on the brakes of this completely unfair system of justice they have created in this country.

Hollywood then went forward and gave Samantha Bee a nice reward last night, while blocking out the press coverage, for being such a great performer.

It’s easy to see how Weinstein got away with all that he did over with years with the Hollywood crowd knowing all about it. They are the MOST hypocritical group of people who have NO REAL interest in any of these issues of gender respect or racism EXCEPT if it benefits their political agenda.

Sorry Harrison, but what Samantha Bee said was scripted and approved by Turner Broadcasting. This wasn’t an off camera remark and it was meant to be heard by everyone. It seems to me that even a certain group of women marching on Washington used that name you just mentioned to refer to the hats they were wearing.

The Samantha Bee comment was meant to be what it was…vile and disgusting and a put down of a woman. Chelsea Clinton tweeted that such name calling should be off limits and was totally off limits by the press and Hollywood when Bill Clinton was in office when it came to offspring of a President.

It was not smart of Samantha to call Ivanka a feckless cunt on television. While it is true and millions of people agree with her, one needs to hold back at times no matter what you think.

Samanthat was trying to use the term in order to put emphasis on her story about Trump separating immigrant parents from their children. She feels very strongly that this is abhorrent and that Ivanka could step up and help if she really cared about children as much as she pretends.

I am fine with it and it is small potatoes compared to Trumps own pussy grabbing remarks and assaulting 19 woman.

        • Pat

Dusty you are trying to be outrageous, but at least get your facts straight. No assaults of 19 women. Comment, if it was said, was said off camera by Trump. There is no recording that I know of.

The video used of immigrants in cages was taken during the Obama presidency.

The policy of separating children unaccompanied by parents at the border was in place during the Obama presidency and he didn’t change the law. Nobody was hysterical about it then.

President Trump does want to change the law and make it more humane.

As usual, Hollywood people have NO IDEA what they are talking about and liberals just encourage the lies. Obama never changed the law and it is still in place.

Everyone has been focused on the horrible gutter language word used by Samantha Bee, but what she said right afterwards was equally disgusting which was to accuse Ivanka of incest. Bee attempts to cloak herself in moral superiority by saying it was done for the poor immigrant children being separated from their parents. How dare Ivanka show a picture of herself and her child when immigrant children are being torn from the parents?

Again, this is more hypocrisy because this immigration policy was happening throughout the Obama years and Hollywood didn’t unleash their NASTY MEAN WOMEN to make a point about it then against the Obama administration. So for Samantha Bee and her Hollywood liberal buddies to try to justify her stunning harassment of Ivanka by calling herself a social justice warrior is a whole lot of baloney. This was all planned by seriously evil people in Hollywood to make a point about humanity by this unbelievable attack on a mother hugging her child.

When I first heard the Rosanne comment, I thought that it was bad and her show would fail because public opinion would go against her. ABC, however, made the decision to fire her. Then just a few days later, we have the equally bad comment by Samantha Bee. One is fired. The other is protected by Hollywood and the liberal media. That isn’t fair by itself, that one is punished while the other is given a reward by the Hollywood elites.

Communist countries, however, make it a rule to shut down free speech whether written or spoken. Speaking freely can land you in jail or worse. America is walking a fine line when it comes to free speech. Half the country wants to ban the other half when they don’t like what they are saying and the other half feels the same way. Shutting down free speech and expression, however, can lead to dangerous consequences such as turning our country into a place like Russia or North Korea.

No one shut down Roseanne’s free speech. ABC just chose to terminate her employment. I imagine if she had her own cable tv show dedicated to her views, she could find a following and she’d be free to mouth off as she wished. She would probably do well.

As Pittsfield loses students to school choice Mccandless allows behavior problem student to roam the halls of Herberg school where 1 student can disrupt the entire population of well behaved kids.
This sped program intimidates the 750 other students.Any student who disrupts a school should be removed by the police .Making students fear going to Herberg lowers their grades and test scores.

Maybe he needs to take some pointers from school systems that actually work. Ones with dicipline like in Japan. In many schools in Japan students are responsible for cleaning their own school. This cuts way down on foolish vandalism. And the uniforms cut back on the many issues we have in some american schools where the kids can wear anything.

Stop letting kids run the schools while the Superintendents get paid a fortune for supervising an overstaffed, bloated budgeted administration. If this was working so well why would so many parents be inconveniencing themselves and their kids to truck them to another school? HUH?

The “Special Ed” problem has jumped the banks and is overwhelming the system both behaviorally and financially. Why should JIV and the Evil Empire care?

By law Sped can’t be cut. It’s to the school departments advantage to classify as many kids as possible as Sped.

So, Gaetani say that people are either misinformed not informed,or just don’t give a crap. Isn’t it up to Media to relate the goings on in the City?

Im all for sped but no student should be allowed to disrupt 750 kids, its common sense. 98%do not act out but the ones we are talking about are putting on a show for the school and making themselves famous by schools not calling the police often waiting for the student to escalate to the next level…….its the number 1 reason wealthier parents opt out….and Mccandless lets this go on but wont admit its the reason.Kid are allowed to write pornographic words in the Herberg bathrooms…….why is that allowed by Mccandless and Yon

Mr. Gaetani wanted to post his letter to the E P A for Planet bloggers.
Dear Mr. Gaetani..Thank tou for your interest in the Ity of Pittsdield waste water treatment plant and request that regional administrator Alexandra Dunn visit the city to discuss the issues related to the plant and treatment upgrades. As you are aware, the mayor and several city representatives recently hosted the regional administrator and several members of her staff. We also understand that the city council has discussed the issues in detail at recent meetings, in light of the current status of the matter we are not anticipating another visit in the future, but very much appreciate your sharing, your views , on these important issues.
