BOMBACK’s LATE-INNING HEROICS (AGAIN!) DRIVE COLONIALS WINNING STREAK TO SIX; TEAM MOVES CLOSER TO FIRST-PLACE WORCESTER

(PITTSFIELD, SUNDAY, AUG. 7, 2011, GAME OF AUG. 6) — Danny Bomback is getting used coming through in high-pressure situations.
With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Bomback’s liner to center with two outs plated his second game winning hit in as many nights, as the Colonials defeated the New Jersey Jackals 6-5 at a soggy Wahconah Park.
Pittsfield, now winners of six straight contests, leap one game over .500 (10-9) on the second half of the season, sitting four games behind the first-place Worcester Tornadoes.
Big Hit Seals Victory for Pittsfield
After the Colonials surrendered a 5-1 lead in the top of the eighth, Pittsfield’s batters began to work New Jersey’s bullpen in the latter half of the frame. With one out, Scott Knazek drew a walk off of Mike Petrowski (1-4, 3.83 ERA). Knazek advanced to third on a booted ball by Jackals’ second baseman Myron Leslie, setting up runners on the corners with one out.
New Jersey Manager Joe Calfapietra elected to bring in closer Jeff Gogal to attempt to get out of the jam. After inducing Jerod Edmondson into a popout to shallow left, Bomback laced a Gogal offering up the middle to score Knazek and give Pittsfield their ultimate 6-5 advantage.
Chris Rubio (1-1, 3.21 ERA), who came on to retire the last batter of the eighth, pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his first victory in a Colonials uniform.
New Jersey Chips Away After Pittsfield Builds Lead
Pittsfield took the lead in the first, when Billy Mottram lined a single to center off starter Jon Kibler to bring home Edmondson with the game’s first run. The Colonials added two more in the fifth on an RBI single by Bomback and an RBI groundout by Mottram.
Pittsfield added to its lead in the sixth and seventh, adding single runs on a RBI groundout by Jermel Lomack and an RBI double to center by Johnny Welch.
However, the Jackals scored four runs against Colonials’ reliever MacKenzie King in the top of the eighth to tie the game. The Jackals scored two runs on a sacrifice fly by Sean Smith and an RBI single by Mike DeJesus, but the big blow came from ex-big leaguer D’Angelo Jimenez, who smoked a 2-2 King offering over the auxiliary fence in right center for a two-run homer to knot the game.
King’s poor eighth spoiled the victory for Pittsfield starter T.J. Wink, who allowed one run on five hits in five innings of work, walking five and striking out 10 on 101 pitches, 56 for strikes.
Kibler allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits during his five innings of work for the Jackals, striking out five without walking a batter.
Leslie went 3-4 for New Jersey, while Bomback and Welch each had three hits apiece for Pittsfield.
The series continues on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when Miguel Flores (2-7, 4.42 ERA) takes on Jackals’ lefty A.J. Wideman (2-2, 4.05 ERA).
COLONIALS NOTES: The beginning of the game was delayed for 1 hour and 19 minutes while intermittent showers passed through the region. Though the tarp was originally pulled in time for a 7:15 first pitch, the rain restarted just as the tarp was being folded up, necessitating the grounds crew to cover the infield once again. The game ultimately began at 8:19 P.M … Outfielder Quentin Davis (undisclosed reasons) was a late scratch from the original lineup and was replaced by Lomack. Davis, slated to play center, was replaced by Edmondson, while Lomack took left field and Mottram shifted to right.
