SADOWY FIRING AT RSVP HAS MAYOR’S BLOODY FINGERPRINTS ALL OVER IT

PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

First of a Two-Part Series

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY, OCT. 6, 2014) — As you now know but once again weren’t supposed to know — this is, after all, a city with a mayor who has ordered Administrative Shutdown on transparency, inquiry, questions, and honest debate — RSVP fired executive director Deborah Sadowy Dargie last week.

In investigating this story, THE PLANET followed the evidence. It strongly suggests that mayor Dan Bianchi set up Sadowy for failure as part of a larger plan to shut down RSVP.

Here’s the overview:

(a) The Machiavellian story begins when Sheila Pia tells the mayor and the RSVP board she intends to resign. City hall and RSVP sources say Pia was under a lot of stress and wanted out. We asked where the stress was coming from. Answer: “The mayor.” We asked why: “Because he thinks RSVP is a waste of money. He thinks senior citizens are a burden, weighing down the city.” THE PLANET asked the mayor for his comments, but he failed to respond.

(b) RSVP hires Dargie as RSVP executive director in June. Sadowy begins in early July. That one-month lag between hiring and actually starting the job will prove to be a key part of the plan.

(c) Sadowy is a city employee, responsible to the mayor.

(d) On Sept. 25, Carolyn Valli, RSVP board chair, fires Sadowy.

(e) The RSVP board is an advisory not an administrative or directing board. Its sole job is to advise the executive director and the mayor.

(f) Because it is advisory and not directive, the RSVB board has no independent hiring or firing authority. That must come directly from the mayor.

It appears the mayor took the coward’s way. He hid behind Valli’s skirts and ordered the board do his dirty work. And where was that bastion of integrity, The Sheffield Shuffler? We refer to city personnel director John DeAngelo. Missing in action,  it would seem.

The Rest of the Story: Sadowy Was Set Up to Fail

THE PLANET broke a story The Suits wanted hidden. Sound familiar? After we dragged this Oxbow Incident into the sunlight, The Boring Broadsheet published its Suit-Friendly version of events, in which Sawody was blamed for everything from the Great Chicago Fire, the Titanic sinking, and Ebola.

In the Boring Broadsheet version, Valli threw Sadowy under the steamroller, citing a botched grant. The ensuing heat from Sadowy’s many supporters forced the paper into a hurried story yesterday (Sunday, Oct. 5). Keep in mind the only reason The Eagle wrote one syllable on this was because of THE PLANET’s breaking the story. Without us, the mayor’s latest employee beheading would have been accomplished entirely in the dark.

Sadowy came to RSVP on June 7 with a stellar reputation for accomplishment in executive positions at United Cerebral Palsy , the YMCA, and Hillcrest Educational Centers. After Pia quit after two years at the RSVP helm, the organization began searching for a new exec. The interview committee included Eric Wilder, RSVP board VP; real-estate agent Andy Perineck; RSVP secretary Rosemay Gould; Vin Marinaro, director of the Council on Aging; and Valli, who is also executive director of Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity.

The board announced Sadowy’s hiring in early June. Sadowy, however, started on July 7, robbing Sadowy of a month in which she could have learned some of the ropes of a perilous position. Was this at the mayor’s behest? One RSVP source says it was.

Sadowy: ‘I had no help at all. I had no support’

Soon after she started on July 7, Sadowy learned that a massive year-end progress report was due to the federal government on July 30. On that report would hinge Uncle Sam’s grant support — all of $40,000.

“No one ever told me about this requirement, and it wasn’t part of what I was doing,” Sadowy told THE PLANET in an exclusive interview. “If this was a smart board, it would have had Sheila Pia [outgoing director] do and submit the report. But this board is so far removed from the daily operations at RSVP, its amazing. The board had no idea of the [daily] operations. Carolyn Valli told the board that she had offered to help me [with the grant]. That’s not true.”

“To prepare the grant, I had to teach myself everything about the progress report,” Sadowy said. “I  worked on it from July 7 to the 30th. I received no help at all. I had no support, and I was given no training. I was asked to come in on a voluntary basis two weeks before Sheila left. She tried to do the best she could, but she was so stressed out. She couldn’t wait to get out of there [RSVP].”

‘I have never felt so alone in and organization in all my life.’

“I learned quickly how political the board was,” Sadowy said. “It was terrible. That’s why I can never ‘do’ politics. It’s too dirty. RSVP is a great organization, but [locally] it’s a four-sided wheel. I have never felt so alone within an organization in my life. I had to come in with no training and get the grant report done. It would take an experienced person months to do it. For Carolyn to use the grant as an excuse to fire me is irresponsible.”

Sadowy says during the interview process, Valli and the committee made it clear they wanted a fresh face, a new start, and an experienced hand to take the reins. The job appeared ideal: “I’m such an assertive person,” Sadowy said. “When they hired me, they said ‘We want you to be the face of RSVP. We want you to take us to another level.’ Well, that’s the kind of challenge that makes me tick — the outside-the-box approach, the cutting edge. I couldn’t wait to get started. I had so many ideas. My vision was to enhance the volunteer experience. They don’t want to sit around and answer phones. This is a newer generation of volunteers with much better skills. They want more fulfilling experiences. The real reason I got fired was that they thought I was trying to change the mission, but that’s not so. I was very true to the mission. I am so mission driven.”

Fact is, neither the mayor, Valli, nor the board gave her the chance. The listless RSVP — with Bianchi  secretly intent with doing away with the organization — hired a strong, independent, intelligent woman, one who knew more than they did.

The question arises: If the mayor secretly wanted to pull the plug on RSVP, why would he approve the hiring of such a strong, capable person? The answer is easy to surmise. Bring in a capable person, set her up to fail, and then claim the organization is beyond saving. Of course, the mayor may have greatly miscalculated, thinking he could intimidate Sadowy through a toothless and weak board. Either way, the evidence is clear: Sadowy’s firing was a planned hit.

This so fits the mayor’s pattern — threatened by talented people, especially women, apparently so unsure of himself that he needs to surround himself with flunkies. What a tragedy, to see this once bright city succumb to a fear-driven administrative death wish.

TOMORROW IN PART TWO — THE PLANET TAKES YOU INSIDE THE ROOM WHEN IT ALL COMES UNDONE.

I have had experience dealing with the RSVP office as a person going there to get a job. Within the first few minutes of the interview the director told me how tight she was with Dan Bianchi and discouraged me from taking the job telling me that “I don’t know about you, but if the same job keeps showing up in the want ads over and over, I take that as a sign that it’s not a good idea to apply for it, like this job for example”. This particular RSVP job was continually appearing in the want ads every 6 months or so, but like most people I was desperate for a job and, silly me, I actually applied for this job. I was completely blown away by these first two statements by this employer and walked away from the interview thinking that I would not want to work for this organization and how arrogant they acted.

Thanks Dan for the excellent coverage, this would have been DOA if not for the Planet’s coverage. Mayor not too big on the Tammy Wynette thing is he ? “I feel bad about the way this worked out,” Bianchi said…

A few thoughts on the ebola virus though I know this is mostly for local stuff, I think it warrants some thought on the matter.

This whole thing reminds me of the Titanic in which people became so sure of themselves that they set themselves up for a fall. In the case of the Titanic, the ships creators were confident she was unsinkable. In the case of ebola, doctors are sure they can keep this under control in our country. I don’t think we should be that overconfident. The fact is that many things about this disease still mystify. It all started with ebola stricken doctors and health care workers who had contracted ebola coming back to the states to be cured. We all thought it was miraculous, but the current patient sick in Texas is not being given the experimental drugs and is fighting for his life. Even the one who had the experimental drug is having issues. I think the CDC is not being cautious enough and should recommend air travel be limited from these ebola stricken countries.
It is insane in my opinion to think we can track down every person that Duncan came in contact with. I don’t know maybe he sneezed on somebody on the corner of some street in Texas or he left a small amount of sweat from his hands somewhere. How can anybody possibly track everybody he come in contact with everyday and Duncan was very infectious for 3 days at least, but apparently he was running all over the place during that time.
Why is it that in the case of ebola, Obama and the CDC think the United States must come to the rescue and yet in the case of Isis we will not get involved because America should not be the police for the rest of the world? I take the opposite view that America must be very careful in the case of ebola and send people over to help, but that people should not be brought back here if they are sick, but treated in Africa with the proper medical services set up there. Air travel should be cut back.

If RSVP ends up going away, so be it. Haven’t we all learned that these gov’t agencies really don’t help anyone except themselves?

……….and the money that they get could be used for other Bianchi projects. Perhaps a zip line from city hall to his Global office.

The money used for RSVP can be better spent.

For instance:

The move to 100 North St.
40% pay raises for all city department heads.
New school busses.
A new high school.
A new police station.
New water treatment plants.
New health insurance contract.
Paying off lawsuits against the city.
The new airport.
New methodone clinic.
Stickers to tell kids not to ride skateboards.
Remodeling the corner office.
Removing carpets at city hall.
The Colonial Theater.

Pot holes? Forget about it.
That’s why we have tire shops with front end alignment machines.

Remember, the new tax rates have not yet been set.

On the topic of RSVP! (I used to be an RSVP Board Member)
I would like to share a few “FACTS” with all of you. RSVP volunteers provides 1000’s of hours to numerous and varied agencies and organizations. Additionally, the RSVP van provides transportation to people who need it. RSVP is a wonderful organization and a real service to the community.

It’s just my opinion!!!

Bill, as a board member did you get paid? And can I assume the administrators of RSVP (such as the director) get paid? I do agreed that the volunteers do great work. So why aren’t the administrators and board members (if they get paid) also volunteering?

Yes and this shows once again what a tremendous community asset the Planet is. Without this site, all this would have been kept a secret and a good woman secretly destroyed.

I know Deborah. She is honest as the day is long on June 21 and she is capable. As DV says independent and strong. The mayor seems to have a probable with women in business.

I know Deb, too. She is passionate about what she does and gives 110% to her work and community efforts. If the mayor and/or the board were that concerned about the grant money they should’ve made damn sure it was taken care of before Deb’s start date. That the mayor didn’t have the testicular fortitude to speak with her directly speaks volumes about who he is as a man, let alone mayor.

Grants are not guaranteed. They can be “granted” or denied.
Never take it for granted that they will be approved.

There is no doubt in my mind that Deborah did her best in the short time she was given.

How come they mayor can pull $140,000.00 of taxpayer money out of thin air for the move with no explaination as to where he took it from to the city council or the citizens and yet fires someone over a $40,000 grant ???

No, none of the Board Members get paid. There are only 3 paid employees at RSVP. A large portion of the RSVP is received from the federal gov’t.
So it looks like Pittsfield will not the federal gov’t money, but rest assure some other community will!

I agree with others that Dan gives all of us another view as to what is going on.

I am sorry, i don’t buy that the grant, or the report, are so complicated that it would take more than a month to compile. and who waits until the last minute to complete a grant application?

I agree it’s hard to tell these days if Dan is still being objective or has his disdain for the mayor clouded every opinion on every move made by the administration and public boards.

Have you ever applied for a grants. Especially a Federal or state one? I have applied for and receiver multiple ones. The process is always excruciatingly complex, and seemingly designed to be so. I can easily see how, in the process of applying for this grant for $40K one would need to understand every aspect of the operation, and also know ALL the numbers and facts from the prior year as well as projections of same for next year. It is very unnecessarily complicated and would require knowledge well beyond what one could acquire in 2-3 weeks, especially with no training and no support.

Dan: there is nothing disinterested about this column and your concept of “evidence” (which is often nothing more than quoting the hearsay your readers leave in the comment section) is also skewed. I used to read this column with great interest because I thought it provided a much-needed perspective on what is happening in our city. Now I just check in every once in while for a laugh – and it’s not at all the inside jokes. My advice: spend less time making up nicknames for your nemeses and more time getting objective information on which to report a story.

I have worked on state grants, some of the reporting is actually very difficult if you don’t have all the paperwork in front of you and access to all the accounts.

Here is the base renewal application, it requires a LOT of detail.

I bet the mayor, given the same 23 days to write the grant, by himself, could not do it.

I’d bet the farm on it.

He cannot even show up at a city council meeting to answer a few questions about a “routine administrative decision” without legal counsel and a battery of lawyers.

The grant he would write by himself in that amount of time compared to Deborah’s would be like comparing a kindergarter’s work to that of a rocket scientist.

Hell, you don’t even need to be smart enough to run the country as long as you’ve got a Dick Cheyney to do it for you.

Mr. Valenti, perhaps you would care to disclose your relationship with Ms. Sadowy. You are going to unusual lengths to go to bat for her. Is there more to the story? The mayor is acting in the best manner, with what’s best for the city always first in his mind.

Pittsfield Believer, I disagree with you on the statement that you just said. “The mayor is acting in the best manner, with what’s best for the city always first in his mind.” Listen to what little communication the mayor has with anyone in Pittsfield, he cannot keep his stories straight. If you were to dissect what he says, you would realize he’s a double talker. It appears that the mayor thinks he’s fooling us all but he’s not. Someday the mayoral will get what he deserves and I’m not talking about the 40% raise.

That grant may have been earmarked to go into Bianchis found money fund. I am not surprised he is pissed. Now he has to go scratching and clawing to dig up an equal amount.

Or, just add it to the new tax increase. Whichever is easier.

I heard Morandi at a Ordinance&Rules meeting ,say he was against councilors getting a raise cause people were suffering out there. He just gave every person in City hall, as well as department heads 40 percent raises and the city hasn’t done a damn thing to deserve those raises, What a moron,we wonder why we’re the laughing stock of the state
