PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 5-7, 2015) — Tonight, Friday, THE PLANET will be at The Marketplace Cafe in beautiful, downtown Pittsfield in an appearance as part of Artswalk. There will be a number of our paintings on display, free refreshments, and we shall be there for the meet-and-greet (or is it “meat-and-greet”?). You’re welcome to stop by and say “Hey.”

BETSY PALMER

This week, one of the great “stars of stage and screen,” as the tired phrase used to put it though with energy, Betsy Palmer died. Who was Betsy Palmer? If you are of a certain age, you don’t ask the question. If you are not of a certain age, you can read today’s guest column. It is written by our good friend and writer Mark Murphy, a man we first met in the newsroom of the Syracuse Post-Standard. Mark posted this today on his wonderful blog murphyscraw.blogspot.com.

Betsy Palmer

By MARK MURPHY

Part of me is annoyed that many people probably remember her only as the killer in the “Friday the 13th” movie.

Then again, I suppose that if it weren’t for that slasher film, the same people wouldn’t know of her at all.

And like so many of her contemporaries, she deserves to be remembered.

I am of that generation that mainly thinks of her as one of the four panelists on “I’ve Got a Secret,” the others being Bill Cullen, Henry Morgan and Bess Myerson. And Ms. Myerson herself died last year. (I sadly remember editing many stories about her during my time on the wire desk during the 1980s. She was embroiled – as journalists like to say – in a scandal in New York City that was called “The Bess Mess.” Memo to celebs: If you want to avoid being ensnarled in a catchy phrase like “The Bess Mess,” get yourself embroiled in some other community that is far, far from Manhattan’s creative scribes – another word journalists like to use.)

I should add that before I started watching the show, the original panelists included Jayne Meadows and Faye Emerson. I’ve seen kinescopes of some of those shows, though, and Ms. Emerson often annoys me for some reason. Maybe it’s because she sometimes seems to come across as a know-it-all who is at best a know-it-some.

And I remember how, during a visit to my hometown many moons ago, Ms. Emerson very much annoyed the manager of the local summer playhouse when she insisted that he turn off the air-conditioning system during her play. To the surprise of absolutely no one who knew this producer (who many years later got away with not paying for a tetanus shot after my sister, working as an unpaid apprentice, stepped on a nail) easily prevailed.

I should also note the recent passing of Ms. Meadows, whom I did find to be charming, savvy and intelligent, even if she did sometimes seem overly appreciative of whatever her husband, Steve Allen, happened to be saying or doing. (Can’t help wondering if whoever performed their marriage ceremony concluded it by saying “I now pronounce you man and laugh track.”)

Betsy Palmer had a telegenic sweetness that was perfect for television, and a friend of mine who interviewed her for his radio show says that what you saw was what she was.

Yet there was a certain, infrequent slyness about her on-air naivete. She would once in a while, and seemingly inadvertently, say something that was a little risqué, apparently not realizing exactly what she had said, but I think I knew what she was doing all the time, and because she didn’t do it often, and because she wasn’t annoying about this sort of thing (memo to Carol Channing and Charo: Yes, I do mean you), I was apt to look the other way.

A few days ago I watched a segment of “I’ve Got a Secret” that involved three women. As she was questioning them on live TV, Betsy Palmer’s zipper broke, and Cullen and Morgan rushed to her aid.

This could have happened to any woman on live TV.

But what made Betsy Palmer unique was that as this on-air embarrassment was playing itself out, she thought it necessary to apologize to the three women.

That shows a genuineness, and a class, that I fear we don’t find often these days, and not just on TV.

——– 000 ——

That “friend of mine” to whom Mark refer was THE PLANET.  We had Betsy Palmer and Peter Scolari on for the hour on The Dan Valenti Show on WBRK. In our 14-year run of the show, we probably did close to 4,000 broadcasts. The show we did with Betsy Palmer has to be in our personal favorite Top 5. She was a warm, kind, sweet, and gracious person. As a lad, we fell in love with her on TV. As a man, I fell in love all over again.

Godspeed, Betsy Palmer.

——————————————————————————————

THE PLANET would like to thank Supercitizen Terry Kinnas for guest-hosting PLANET VALENTI TELEVISION last night. From the feedback we received, Terry and guest mayoral candidate Craig Gaetani, the show went well — so well that we might not renew our own option!

With that, THE PLANET opens The Comment Line. You know the rules: On weekends, ANY topic is fair game. We only ask that you write as intelligently as you can, avoid the gutter, and move the point or the conversation forward.

Happy Weekend, everybody!

I still love my native hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. However, I had some negative experiences when I lived in the Pittsfield area, which are mostly attributable to my enemy #1 named Andrea F. Nuciforo, Jr. Since I was 20 years old in the Spring of 1996, Nuciforo had people bully me on his behalf without Nuciforo leaving behind his own fingerprints. Nuciforo had a man from Becket, who worked in Pittsfield as an Environmental Science professor at Berkshire Community College, verbally assualt and criminally threaten to assault me. Nuciforo tried to put me in his close friend’s then Pittsfield Sheriff Carmen Massimiano’s Pittsfield jail in the Spring and Summer of 1998 by filing false complaints to the Pittsfield Police Department that I allegedly threatened him. Nuciforo also filed “ethics” complaints against my dad to try to get my dad fired from his state government job at the Pittsfield courthouse. When I was a young man in the Spring of 2002, I was blacklisted from finding a job in Pittsfield for over one year of my life by the Nuciforo network. In 2005, after I moved away from Pittsfield to Southern NH, the Nuciforo network spread vicious, false rumors and slander against me. I tell my story on my Blog page:
http://jonathanmelleonpolitics.blogspot.com/2008/05/andrea-nuciforo-jonathan-melle-month-of.html
Pittsfield politics raises it taxes and fees by millions of dollars each and every year, while its tax base shrinks with thousands of people moving out of Pittsfield, job loss, and poverty. The only way this can happen is for Pittsfield politics to be totally corrupt! Pittsfield politics did not even allow a vote for a new Taconic High School. Another example of corruption in Pittsfield politics is the Consent Decree signed by Jack Welch and Gerry Doyle 15 years ago in the year 2000. There are no more GE jobs in Pittsfield, while GE left behind toxic waste cancer causing chemicals called PCBs in Pittsfield. Thousands of people have suffered from and died of cancer in Pittsfield. The Consent Decree did not clean up a majority of PCBs in Pittsfield. Also, when Gerry Doyle was Mayor of Pittsfield, the city lost millions of taxpayer dollars that are still unaccounted for through present day. The municipality went into state government receivership. Ever since Pittsfield’s financial insolvency, Pittsfield politics has raised taxes and fees, increased spending, and added millions of dollars to its huge debt load it will never be able to repay. Pittsfield’s finances are unsustainable, and everyone knows it. I predict Pittsfield will end up in bankruptcy court in the coming decades. Pittsfield politics is ran by the Good Old Boys club, which are low gene pool, interrelated families whose offspring have assumed political office. To illustrate, Andrea F. Nuciforo, Jr.’s late-father was a Pittsfield State Senator and then a Pittsfield Judge. Nuciforo’s late-Aunt was a Pittsfield Mayor and BCC professor. Nuciforo’s Uncle was a Pittsfield State Representative. Nuciforo was a Pittsfield State Senator, Pittsfield Registrar of Deeds, and a failed candidate for U.S. Congress. In order to find a good job in Pittsfield, one has to kiss the behinds of these people. If one speaks out against someone like Nuciforo, then he or she will lose their job in Pittsfield faster than one can snap their fingers. That is what happened to me from the time I was 20 years old in the Spring of 1996 when I still lived in the Pittsfield area. The Nuciforo network ran Pittsfield politics, and they let me know they did not like me. They were conspiratorial, mean-spirited, bullying, and manipulative.
I may write the same things over and over again, but Pittsfield’s politics problems are also recurringly negative. The Good Old Boys club families that have ran Pittsfield into the ground for their own money, power, and benefit are to blame for Pittsfield’s plight!

Which statement is more predictable:

1. Jonathan Melle will post yet another bitch session about how the GOB’s in Pittsfield ran him out of town years ago and that Pittsfield is the last stop before Hell, if you even bother to read what he posts.

-or-

2. Jonathan Melle will actually post something new and interesting to DV’s web site.

Yes, I know this was a rhetorical question, because Jonathan only rehashes the insults and slights that were perpetrated against him, when he actually lived in Pittsfield. I think he mentioned that he moved away more than 10 years ago, yet he is a daily visitor/poster (I cannot call him a contributor) to Dan’s blog.

All I can say, Johnathan is to move on and find something positive in your own town that you can focus on, instead of complaining about stuff that no loner affects you in Pittsfield.

Seeing how he posts his past troubles here

Jon, get some help. Talk to someone up there about it.

I was treated to or should I say tortured by a local radio (1420) interview today featuring Councilor John Krol as the guest. He is running again for ward 6 councilor and his main concern is giving as much money to the Pittsfield schools as they want. He is proud of having voted for a new Taconic. He also mentioned that he is very close with Linda Tyer and they share similar views on local issues which I guess means that Linda Tyer also wants to give lots more money to the schools. Nobody knows and Linda is being very quiet about her views. All I know about her is that she is a progressive which doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Anyway, John Krol then went on to say that for the immediate future they may have to hold back on giving as much money to the schools as they have been in order to avoid the appearance of giving too much money to the schools in the wake of the new Taconic project. He didn’t use those words exactly, but made it a bit more fancy, but the implication was the same. His interviewer was so bland and asked no challenging questions and agreed sweetly with everything Mr. Krol said. I was at work, but wanted to call in so bad to the radio station as they were accepting calls, but was unable to do so at the time. I wanted to ask him those challenging questions that the radio interviewer was avoiding like the plague. Mr. Krol lucked out and nobody called during the half hour show. The show airs again on Sunday morning, but it is a taped show so you can’t call in with questions. Today’s show was live. Mr. Krol also said a really hypocritical statement in that Pittsfield residents should be given the chance to vote on any big issues facing the city. At that point the obvious questions would have been for the interviewer to ask Mr. Krol if he believes that why weren’t Pittsfield residents given the chance to vote on a new Taconic, but as I said this interviewer was a go along to get along type of guy. This Mr. Krol really needs to be voted out and quickly.

John Krol was a pit bull with me when I originally said that it was obscene that the rights of Pittsfield Citizens were being violated. Like I have said before, the Voting booth is the place to take care of the City Council, the Mayor, and the School Committee. Citizens have to VOTE!

Unfortunately, Krol is running unopposed and is worshipped as an aristocratic icon in the upper class area of ward 6, aka outer West St, where Gerry Doyle and his nemesis, Craig Gaetani also reside. Krol is a close neighbor to mayor Bianchi, thanks to his wealthy father-in law’s gift, who also resides in the patrician side of ward 6 and has political family influences in NY state.
At the polls last election, Krol became giddy and aroused to the point that his curved toed shoes straighted out, when a limo brought one of his heroes to vote; Krol rushed over opened the limo door and hugged that stalwart steward of public money and trust, Evan Dobelle.

Upper class being the key words here. Higher taxes are pocket change to these people which is why they are comfortable pushing for all of these projects which are breaking the budgets of struggling taxpayers.

Mr. Krol certainly acted with the arrogance of one who knows he has the election in the bag. It was as if he was challenging the interviewer to dare ask him any tough questions. It wouldn’t have shocked me if he had said, “Do you know who I am?”, such was his attitude.

This is why struggling Pittsfield taxpayers are facing such seemingly impossible odds to bring fiscal sanity to this city. These moneyed people are living up to their reputations as being insensitive to the needs of the lower classes. They say the new school is for the good of the children, but the rest of us know that a new school serves several purposes. First, they are gambling that it will stop any potential flow of money away from the schools by stopping the loss of students. After all how can they continue to demand more and more money for the schools if the public knows the school population is rapidly dwindling? The public would eventually put up a big fuss as they are now knowing about the declining student numbers. Secondly, the construction of a new school helps wealthy local construction firms. They needed a fix and a new school is the fix. As Dan V. would say, the fix is in.

Did anybody notice the article in the BB that Central Berkshire District schools are letting staff go rather than give more money to the school system? That sounds like fiscal responsibility for the good of the taxpayers.

The Adams-Cheshire School District is having do to the same as the Central Berkshire School District and make cuts. And guess what? We got to vote on our a new Hoosac Valley High or renovate. 2 towns voted to renovate even though a new school was being pushed by many of the “connected” people. Yes they are here too. The renovated school is great. Iberkshires.com has great before and after photos.

It’s like these local interviewers are paid off to give royal carpet treatment to these local politicians. Nobody presses them for the tough questions or makes them feel uncomfortable at all. These feel good interviews are just fluff pieces and nothing more. Hard hitting interviews are very much needed with these local pols to keep them honest.

Therein lies the folly of using your real name on here. There is at least one person who lurks here, who tries to find out a person’s real name. Once he does, he goes online and searches other places to find dirt on them to personally attack them in an effort to try an discredit their comments.

Jonathan Melle obviously at one time in his life had a love for the city of Pittsfield. He no longer does and feels the need to post why. So what? Leave him alone.
He may find it therapeutic to post. He does link and copy articles some of us may have missed that are helpful in furthering the discussion.

Same material over and over? Why do advertizers use this technique? You have the ability to get up and go to the kitchen or the bathroom during the commercials. Do you realize that you have the ability to skip a person’s comment and move onto the next one? You’ve had this ability since the 2nd grade.

Dan Valenti never complains about Jonathan’s comments and support. Its his blog. If he didn’t want Jonathan commenting, he could simply removed them like the Berkshire Eagle does.

Jonathan’s military service has been attacked. As he always points out, he received an honorable discharge. I bet this troll attacking him has never even served.

His mental state has been attacked. Jonathan has humbly admitted he has had some problems. A mayor who runs around city hall yelling “Lockdown” who fires people at will and gives huge cash awards for sexual deviant behavior…. I guess is considered sane behavior.

Yesterday even Barry attacked Jonathan. Saying the streets of Pittsfield are safe. Tell that to David Glasser and his two close friends. Oh wait…. you can’t…. because their bodies were dismembered and thrown in plastic bags. The fine upstanding citizen with horn implants in his forehead gets to enjoy 3 meals a day, exercise and television. Along with his other two friends who made Linden street so safe.
Barry your attack is shameful. Who are you to tell someone they cannot post here because they do not live here?

Jonathan Melle has every right to post here as anyone else does. He is faithful to this site and it gives him an avenue to express his discontent with Pittsfield politics.

Adriana;PAT AND NONAMIE — Good posts today. Jonathans posts are very much appreciated HE mentions things I have missed and I am APPRECIATIVE OF HIS POSTS. Pat; I do not know why it is that you dislike me so because your causes are the same as mine.I have posted on this site since last fall. DAN started following me and if you go back further on the planet you will see that I have already addressed many topics that you have questions about. OF course I have no use for the Mayor or any of the cowards on the council. PLEASE GO BACK AND READ THE EARLIER POSTS BY DAN ABOUT ME. Pat , every vote in this election is very important. an d I would like to have you on my side. MY feelings about Kroll is identical to yours. HE is A BIG TALKER WITH NO CONCERN FOR THE TAXPAYER WHATSOEVER. I have a very good friend in ward 6 who I am trying to convince to run against KROLL. HE would beat him hands down as he is a man of the people as I am. I wonder how many people on the PLANET know that TAMMY IVES has taken out papers to run against another dead beat LISA TULLY WHO may be the most useless member of the city council I convinced tammy to run because even though I have –not known her for too long I am convinced she would be a woman for the citizen just as I am a man of the people. As I have stated over and over aqain we need a clean sweep in order to clean this city up. one last thought, now we have three confirmed failed councilors supporting MS TYER – KROLL, LOTHRUP AND CLAIRMONT. Is this what we want in the next city govT.I hope you think not. I have a very long post coming up but because I type so slowly I have to do it in stages. MY post is a detailed analysis of how I intend to take the city budget down significantly when I become mayor with specifics and numbers as to what I am planning to do Have a nice weekend everybody your humble and confident servant craig.

I have one regret in tis upcoming election and that is that neither mazzeo or kroll are running for mayor. I would dismantle them for all of us on the planet and it would take me less time than it did to to thoroughly dismantle pumelen pam malumphy at an HRC meeting last fall where by she had to call a recess to go cry her eyes out. Mayor Bianchi is on my radar and as mean and a bully as he has been to me and others you out there will relish what I have in store for him. I will forewarn him here and now that he better do what he told me to do one time and that was for me to put on my best hat as I would have to be dealing with Collingwood in future talks. WELL Mayor , I have been waiting to talk to that coward and I will forewarn you now that you better wear your best hats when you deal with me in the debates because its not going to be the way things are now when you talk generalities and no specifics. I hope you remember what I wrote in a past letter to the editor last year when I told you that you have never met any one like me and I am going to show you what I mean. I am feeling sorry for you already. you have been the worst mayor this city has ever had and you are the cause of so many people in our beloved city who are just a paycheck away from disaster because of your send spend attitude and your coziness with the school dept which are breaking the backs of the taxpayers.I cant wait for the debates and I might only have to attend the first one as that might be enough to expose you. Linda TYER will be a good candidate because she has seen me front and center at every council meeting and has learned plenty from me .THE over 50 petitions I have filed that mazzeo killed under rule 27 were kept by Ms.Tyer and she has read them. all MY petitions will be the center point of my campaign and I will remind MS. Tyer if she uses my ideas in the campaign. I do admire MS, TYER for running for mayor. she sees how bad bianchi is as I do and I give her credit. ITS going to be interesting to see 2 candidates who are part of the GOB network and how they will split the votes I am not and never been part of the GOB network but they know me and there scared because they know my capability. I am holding no fund raisers and look for no endorsements from any one ;ALL I want is the endorsement of the citizens in the voting booth and then we will rebuild this city to a place where we can all survive here. I have read the many letters posted here. Some are nasty while most reveal concerned citizens of Pittsfield. I enjoy reading Johnathan Melle’s comments and letters. As a former reesident, he has every right to speak of the corrupt mayor and city council. I totally agree with all his comments.
I am very happy to hear that do nothing Lisa Tully finally has an opponent for Ward 1 in Tammy Ives. I do hope that Tammy will post her concerns for ward 1 as I have heard nothing as to what her goals are in running for city council. I sure would love to see a letter from her in this blog.
As to the many who have written comments about the corrupt councilors who voted themselves a 100% pay raise in addition to $4,000.00 to each school committee member, the councilors through a corrupt city charter, revised by our sitting councilors, have given themselves complete control for any large city expenditure, e.i., the new Taconic, the new police station, the new public works garage without so much as a local petition to correct the charter which gives the 11 city councilors supreme authority to vote on any issue.. And favorite, the Pittsfield Airport which is used primarily by corporate jets and their rich employees. Who pays for their airport? Why the Pittsfield taxpayers, of course. To date this year, the Pittsfield taxpayers have shelled out over 3 million with another 3.5 million for repaving the main runway. Now, when it comes to Pittsfield city streets, three hundred thousand would be an extreme amount to repair the city streets.
I’m a slow typist like Craig and make many typos just like Craig. But he firmly states, he is not a typist and neither am I. So you people who feel the need to complain about his diction, bug off. I am for Craig and will vote for him as he is the only candidate who has the balls to post his thoughts and convictions. Now look at Linda Tyer, she is pretty but her looks don’t get my vote. She was a do nothing Ward 3 councilor but has done very well in her present job. No platform no vote. Simple!

ROTTEN ROBERT , THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT. I didnt know that the city could have acquired THE WMECO BUILDING FOR A DOLLAR. Can you shed some more light on this? I would like to know the whole story behind this. craig.

Rotten Robert

I type so slow that i often will forget to add a critical issue in my letters. How many are aware that Western Mass Electric, tried unsuccessfully to sell their unused building on West St. for One Dollar ($1.00) to the city of Pittsfield and of course, the city turned down their offer. The building would easily house the Pittsfield Police and all their cruisers and because of its location, it is in a perfect spot to control the crime element in Pittsfield. This building is in great shape and would require minimal changes at low cost to house our police force. But knowing Bianchi and his 11 henchmen (city council), Pittsfield needs an entirely new building to house the police station.
Another new building to house the utility trucks, snow plows, etc, will be necessary and very costly to the taxpayers of Pittsfield. Again, why would the city councilors and the mayor even consider the huge well built building on East St. next to Berkshire Sand and Gravel for their city trucks that has been for sale for years when the city taxpayers are there to support a very costly new building? They have endless money. Hell, they are going to buy a new Taconic for $120 million rather than spend $36 million to fix the present Taconic. The Ward 1 councilor, Tully, repeatedly stated it was a no-brainer to spend $120 Million. As for me, I wonder if she has a brain. Or for that matter, the entire sitting council is so corrupt and so brainless that they feel they can buy anything they wish and to keep pouring taxpayer dollars into the corrupt school budget. Each year less students. Each year spend more for fewer students. So, you think this council is doing a good job, think again!

GUESS WHAT , TAKE A GUESS HOW I FEEL ABOUT CARMEL AND DEGNAN. CARMEL IS JUST A PAWN OF THE MAYOR AND A VERY WEAK ONE AT THAT.AND OUT THE DOOR SHE GOES WHEN I BECOME MAYOR. I THINK DEGNAN IS SMART BUT SHE DOESNT COME OFF WELL. I WILL HAVE TO DO SOME THINKING ABOUT HER IN MY ADMIN. ANY ONE CAN MAKE A MISTAKE BUT LOOK AT THE MESS THAT HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO HER BY BIANCHI. I THINK SHE LACKS CONFIDENCE BUT THAT CAN BE OVERCOME. WE WILL SEE. NOW you know two who will go WHEN I become mayor. JUST in case you forgot the other one it is of course Collingwood ,one second after I take the oath of office.
