MAYORAL CANDIDATES IN WATER PISTOL RUMPUS TONIGHT AT 7 P.M … PLANET PREVIEWS THE TIFF
BY DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
EDITOR’S NOTE: It’s funny, and we’ll share the joke on us with you. We’ve been off a day all week due to Labor Day, to say nothing of crossing four times zones twice. In our purple haze, THE PLANET posted this column early Sunday morning thinking it was Monday morning. You know how the song goes: can’t trust that day. So we’ll leave this column up until Tuesday. Enjoy!
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY, SEPT. 14, 2015) — Tombstone, Arizona had The Gunfight of OK Corral, a 30-second bust in 1881 that myth transformed into a Kirk Douglas oater. Tonight at 7 p.m. in Room K-111 at BCC, Pittsfield can witness The Waterpistol Rumpus at the Not-OK City.
THE PLANET and the PV-TV cameras will be there to record some of the foliage, which we will broadcast Thursday for the next live edition of PLANET VALENTI TELEVISION.
The Lineup: BAT WAG
The code word for this mayoral event is BAT WAG. That’s not the name of a new dance. It’s not a hitting style preferred by Latino baseball players. It’s shorthand for the characters who will bump heads tonight: Bianch and Tyer (BAT) plus Walto and Gaetani (WAG).
For those keeping score at home, THE PLANET presents these candidate thumbnails. As a general note to get started, note that the BATs have had little to say thus far in the campaign. This is textbook political strategy. They are heavily favored to advance to November and have jealously kept their powder dry. Both sides are saving their best for the general election. Remember, too, voters, that your next mayor will serve a four-year term for the first time in city history. You won’t be able to do a thing about it until November 2019. By then, who knows if there will be one stone left upon another?
THE CANDIDATES
DAN BIANCHI— The incumbent wins the inside track. Bianchi started off well but lost his shine about
six months into his first year after Spectrumgate blew up in his face. The city had won three times in court against Spectrum Health Services and the downtown methadone clinic. Bianchi inherited a winnable case from Jimmy Ruberto and city attorney Rich Dohoney. New city solicitor Kathy Degnan, however, handed the decision over to Spectrum plus $100,000 to boot. Bianchi never found his footing after that. For three and a half years, people have wondered: Where is the Dan Bianchi the city thought it knew, the fighter who served for 10 years as Ward 6 city councilor? Will be show up tonight? Bianchi is the Ultimo Persona Enterada in this election: The Ultimate Insider.
LINDA TYER— She has amassed a decent record of public service as a ward councilor and city clerk. As clerk, she has run the city’s most responsive department. Tyer presents an open,
approachable attitude that contrasts with the mayor’s reticence. She comes off as capable, alert, and willing to listen. Her negatives provide the counterbalance. She’s seen as an Insider, a fair claim. There is a perception that if elected she will simply serve as the marionette for either Barry Clairmont, Ruberto, or both. THE PLANET has seen no evidence to give this credence, but it can’t be known for certain without Tyer winning. She has held her fire in this preliminary phase, sticking to innocuous press statements and scripted photo ops regarding blight and parks. It will be interesting to see her strategy for tonight: Does she lay low or does she begin her assault on Mt. Bianchi?
DONNA WALTO— With her fourth attempt at the corner office, she has become the punchlline to the
following joke: “Who is Pittsfield’s answer to Harold Stassen?” You can go back to her statements from the 2005, 2007, and 2011 campaigns, and plug them into 2015. It’s her “Back to the Future” style. Aside from one press release on economics, Walto has been invisible. If her campaign was the title of a movie, it would be Run Silent, Run Shallow. As she’s done three times previously, Walto’s running a token campaign. No lawn signs, stickers, buttons, or literature. No fundraisers. No ads. No nuthin’. She’s sitting in Schwab’s Drugstore waiting to be discovered. Ain’t gonna happen. It’s another, “Where’s Walto?”
CRAIG GAETANI — Take a hurricane, wrap it in a Nor’easter, put it in a Vitamix,
coat with nitroglycerin, and you have Gaetani. He has been flooding the campaign with his ideas on how to improve the city. No one has been as visible or vocal. He’s written letters to the editor, issued press releases and petitions, appeared at council meetings, started a TV show, and carved wedge-shaped hieroglyphics in cuneiform. However, when he flooded THE PLANET with long-winded rants written in ALL CAPS and increasingly hostile tones, we had to cut him off. We felt like Joe the Bartender having to tell Mr. Donohey he’s had one too many. Gaetani’s a car spinning its tires in a snowbank, expending a lot of energy but getting nowhere. He refuses to spend a cent to push his cause, all the while insisting he will win in a landslide. Acts of God aside, the only thing that will “slide” is his campaign into electoral oblivion.

Tonight’s debate is sponsored by The Pittsfield Gazette. THE PLANET thanks Jonathan Levine for keeping up with his paper’s electoral tradition. We also thank the Bianchi campaign for his photo and The Berkshire Eagle for the photos of the other three candidates.

Thanks DV.. Great preview. No question Bianchi & Tyer, no chance Walto and Gaetani..
Does it make any difference what they SAY? As Mr Bianchi and most councilors have proven, words during campaign time are absolutely worthless. Absolutely worthless. Meaningless blather intended to hoodwink the voters in an attempt to gain power.
Bianchi is out. Tyer is in in a landslide. And the people in Pittsfield never had a chance because none was offered up. I hope the seniors get a huge social security increase each of the next four years because they are going to need it. And the poor bastards working two jobs may need to get a third.
Special interest folk can rest assured they are going to be well taken care of by the new administration. Why? Because they ARE the new administration.
hey leave Vita Mix ® out of this, great piece !!
Pittsfield gets what it gets because of the same ole. Hand it down, pass the wand. Follow the money. The best, and the rest, have exited for a better life elsewhere. I know one thing, I am not voting for Bianchi. No matter, and Councilors like Tully should be voted out based on the Taconic Vote and not showing up for their Ward. That’s what they’ve earned. No re-election!
We should not have an election.
For all intents and purposes we don’t
Interesting analysis. Yes it will be between Bianchi and Tyer. I agree, both are “insiders”. I will probably cast a protest vote this time around. Either Walto or Gaetani based on what I see tomorrow night at the forum.
I am a regular follower of your site, DV, but this is the first time posting a comment. Don’t always agree w you but appreciate what you do.
Vote out Bianchi and the rest of the incumbents! Bill Sturgeon, as moderator of the debate – please offer up some hardball questions about the real issues – out-of-control spending and crime!
I will be watching. I have no faith in Bill Sturgeon as the moderator Dan Valenti is another story.
All candidates should be applauded for putting themselves out for public scrutiny-warts and all.
Good piece Dan!
One cannot question Mrs. Tyre’s work ethic. Her car was parked in her reserved space next to city hall all of yesterday and this morning it was parked in the public works commissioners reserved space.
Now that’s dedication. I think?
If Gaetani is in a snowbank it’s because the snowbank is on North Street and Bianchi or Collingwood didn’t do a thing about it. Do you think Tyer will do any better with Collingwood? If Bianchi or Tyer get in Collingwood stays and the long range forecast is four years of snow jobs and the taxpayers continue to get screwed because the good old boys want you to believe that Gaetani can’t win. Well no one can’t win unless you vote for them. The choice is yours.
I know Tyer will do better because she already realizes the strengths and weakness of the department heads in city hall. The difference is she will make decisions based on good management practices not political gain like Bianchi does.
I agree with you Henry on your thoughts.
Linda, I’m sure realize that the reason many people are supporting her is because they want to see changes; the same changes they were expecting from Bianchi but that never happened.
What Ms. Tyer has to show is that she won’t do what Mr. Bianchi did, make promises and then break every one of them.
If she can convey integrity and sincerity, win, and then deliver, she can make a fine executive. But if she wins and it’s all the same hooey the city might not last another four years.
Most of all she has to get rid of underperforming dept heads, and reign in spending. Only way to do that is with school department. Unpopular politically but absolutely necessary from a financial survival standpoint.
Excellent analysis, GENE.
Tyer will grow government..Period.
You expect Tyer not to involve her cronies at certain position, different Puppet same Marionette. Vote Gaetani!
This is futile! The status quo win again!
If Tyer were smart she would let Bianchi have it at the debate Tommorow night, there are at least thirty things she could bring up. One is, since when does a department head, (Cottonwood) get less duty with more pay for being so inept?
Amen!!
And he hired a guy from Newton who was fired for poor performance and gave him a 3 year contract !!!!
Lets all vote for Pat Paulsen!
I’ll be voting for a card board cut out.
I’m writing in Dan Valenti. This time and in November.
I guess None of the Above applies in the Mayoral race, literally.
I just looked at the Eagle and there is not a word mentioned of the mayoral debate tonight at 7PM. What gives, just because the Eagle is not involved, they cannot even let people know what is happening. This is pathetic! Way to keep Pittsfield residents in the dark!
Inside tip. If the Eagle endorses a candidate it is usually the one who will pick your pocket from the deepest part. As part of the special interest organization they do not waste time looking out for their customers best interests. Weird but true.
D-MAN
There’s no way that should happen. It should have been there on page 1 or at least page 1 of the B section.
When the BB is in bed with the GOB’s, they don’t want you to know anything about any other candidates.
Dan,
You’re as wrong about my candidacy as you are confused about which day it is. Donna Walto Your Next Mayor signs are out. and no fundraiser yet but I have been vigorously campaigning listening to the everyday people. I am well qualified to run our city as entrepreneur, businesswomen, Williams College alumnus and a single mother of three children. I will address issues of poverty, domestic violence and sound economic development. And since you live in Stockbridge you may have heard of my business mentors Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick and my political mentor Mary Flynn. Sister Angela Maria would be disappointed in your not getting all of your facts straight.
Run Silent, Run Deep
DONNA
Thanks for the response. The results of the prelim of Sept. 22 will prove which our of analyses is the more accurate. Best of luck to you. I’m sure Sr. Angela Maria would be proud of you!
Donna, I will give you a serious look. However, you should not bring in the Sister as the Church vs State law might apply..good luck.
I believe Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick died Donna? And Mary also.
DILLY
That is correct. Jane, Jack, and Mary — all three of whom were friends — have passed on. Electorally speaking, we will be saying the same about Donna and Craig G. after the vote next week on Tuesday.
what’s the deal with Mayoral appointments to Board members who live out of town but are in charge of making policy changes for Pittsfield? In particular the health board.
In Pittsfield, if you don’t live out of town then don’t apply for a job.
The debate should be a real carnival show tonight. This should be fun.
Debate in ten minutes. Prediction – Gaetani will steal the show. He’ll have the Sturgeon so far out of joint that he won’t know where he is. This is one that could be syndicated. Maybe it won’t happen but we can only hope for the best.
Where’s Waldo?
Voice? Times up!
Sturgeon already Made a goof of himself.
Scotty, beam all of us up. There are no intelligent life forms here, including the moderator.
Whoever made this guy a moderator was drinking Jim Beam.
I knew Sturgeon was going to be a disaster.
Did Mrs Walto graduate from the Williams College in Williamstown, Ma?
Cuz, well gee
Dusty these are the future leaders of our city. And this is the moderator of the future.
Scotty, redirect, beam the five on stage up to save us all.
These are the candidates that will Lead us out of our Misery. And this, is the Moderator with the questions that’ll help make it happen. We are Doomed!
I’m crying……from laughing!
Our next mayor is going to make about a half million for the next four years..yup!
TES is full of spit. Tyer reads from a script. Waldo’s living in the past and Gaetani is kicking ass.
Did they all get the questions in advance or just Tyer?
Dusty, why do we even try?
The whole debate was a disgrace.
Just got home from BCC. Holy crap what a show. The moderator was a clown. Walto answered every question with the fact she went to Williams College. Of course they didn’t teach her to tell time as she showed up late. Gaetani is as crazy as ever. Tyer is out of touch with the real world. That leaves us with Dan. God save us.
I agree. The city is in BIG TROUBLE.
Wonder who’ll get to cut the ribbon on the new artificial turf field? None of us will ever know because that person hasn’t been born yet.
Bianchi will cut the ribbons while Tyer cuts weeds
These choices kinda remind me of The Olympics. We had Nancy Kerrigan but we ended up with a bunch of Tonya Hardings?
Or like a child picking his nose and nothing coming out.
If you think Tyer is the answer, then everyone has to be beamed up.
If you think Bianchi is the answer you should be beamed down !
Mr. Sturgeon was the worst and he had a script. What were they thinking.
Sturgeon was the worst moderator I ever saw. Totally incompetent. They would have done better getting a student from one of the elementary schools.
Whose idea was it to have Sturgeon as moderator?
The debate was a draw.
The one thing that was weird was Dan kept looking at his cell phone. Someone was texting him during the debate. I think it was his paid consultant who was sitting in the front row.
