CITY TO LOSE MORE SABIC JOBS; INFO ON COCO ALLEGES 2010 THEFT, TOO
BY DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY, DEC. 3, 2015) — THE PLANET reported this first, that the Polymer Processing Development Center (PPDC) once of GE Plastics progeny and now of Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (Sabic), will be shuttered. The move was confirmed yesterday in a report in Plastics News, an industry journal.
PN reports that in 2017 the PPDC as well as a technology center in Exton, Pa., will be consolidated into Sabic’s Selkirk, N.Y., plant. It’s not certain how many jobs Pittsfield will lose, but it’s certain to further drain the city economy. The previously announced move of Sabic’s Pittsfield HQ to Houston, Texas, to take place in June next year, will result in about 500 jobs lost — 300 directly from the company and 200 in contractors and vendors with Sabic accounts. The jobs lost when the PPDC moves will be in addition to the 500. These positions represent one of the last large groups of high-paying, white collar jobs in the city.
It says a lot about the city’s ability to compete in the workplace, including the huge concern businesses have over Pittsfield’s lack of educated and reliable workers, that Sabic is consolidating to Selkirk, which is only about 40 miles west of Pittsfield.
From Plastics News:
“Some of the 300 headquarters employees in Pittsfield will transfer to Sabic offices in the Houston area. In addition to Lexan-brand PC, Sabic makes several specialty resins including Noryl-brand PPE, Ultem-brand polyetherimide, Cycolac-brand ABS and LNP-brand compounds.
“The business that is now Sabic IP has been based in Pittsfield in some form since 1903, when General Electric Co. bought the Stanley Electric Manufacturing plant there. GE began making phenolic plastic resins in Pittsfield in 1909. Sabic bought the GE Plastics unit from GE for $11.6 billion in 2006.”
——– 000 ——–
There’s no honest way to spin this into some cartoonish “silver lining,” as Mayor Dan Bianchi tried to do when Sabic announced it was closing the HQ on Plastics Avenue. This leaves the gigantic Building 100 to tower empty over the city, casting a shadow taller than any amount of nonsense and “good cheer” spun by The Suits.

Did Coco Dip into PPD Union Funds in 2010, Too?
To update our previous reporting of the firing of Pittsfield Police Department officer Jeffrey Coco on theft charges, PPD sources tell THE PLANET they believe Coco allegedly stole from the patrolman’s union in 2010.
The exact amount from the alleged 2010 incident isn’t known, but sources say it was “in the neighborhood of $5,000-$10,000.” They say that the earlier alleged thefts were discovered by “one of the union’s elected officers.” That would narrow it to either the president, the vice president, or the secretary. Sources say Coco was allowed to pay back the money. He served as union treasurer at the time.
One exasperated source told THE PLANET, “So after he got caught stealing by a union officer, a year or two later he becomes union president? Go figure that one out.” As for a motive for the alleged 2010 theft, sources say “one, he was in financial trouble, tough to imagine with a salary of over $100,000 a year; [and] two, to pay for a lavish wedding. He got married (second time) that year.”
The questions THE PLANET raised yesterday not only remain but become more in urgent need of answers. Meanwhile, according to his attorney, Coco plans to appeal his firing from the PPD. Coco is being represented by Lori Levinson from Great Barrington. Levinson would not say if Coco will deny the allegations. Levinson said that “as far as we know, based on my understanding, no friends or family members [of Coco] have been implicated in any alleged wrongdoing.”
Again, we add the reminder than anyone charged with a crime remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law or otherwise.

So Pittsfield will lose well over 500 jobs over the next 2 years.
So Pittsfield will reach its tax levy ceiling under Proposition 2.5 within the next 4 fiscal years.
So several Pittsfield Police Officers are in litigation with the city government.
So over 650 students per year choice out of Pittsfield’s public school system.
So about 70 percent of Pittsfield’s residents live in poverty and rely on welfare assistance and social services programs.
So Pittsfield politics is totally corrupt and ran by the Good Old Boys club that serves the vested interests that are bankrupting the city government.
So Pittsfield’s tax base is shrinking, while its budgets are increasing.
So Pittsfield is full of cancer causing PCBs.
So Pittsfield’s dead downtown is full of crime.
So Pittsfield had multiple shootings and murders this year of 2015.
So the only growth in Pittsfield is in its underclass.
So the lovely Linda Tyer is Pittsfield’s last hope for change.
This is an interesting news article by WAMC’s Jim Levulis about Sabic Plastics leaving Pittsfield.

Mr. Valenti, Sr. Chopper was my home room teacher, also had her for a teacher, she was a wonderful Soul who is in Heaven, looking down smiling. Sister Mary Dorothy, (Dot) was another famous Sr. At the High School, probably one of the most interesting persons I have ever met. Speaking of Saintly woman, I would like to thank Ms. Agostino for dressing down the joke of three on the license board, Come on M,Rock Bottom and the Riddler for their lax opinions regarding certain establishments in the City. The affirmative vote to continue Johnny’s Beach Club back to a 2 a m curfew, says it all. Hopefully the new Mayor will put responsible replacements and look at all of the Committees and Boards with new blood and a new direction.
The city is a joke and the licensing board personifies it. Too many people with power that are taking care of friends instead of the taxpaying public. They are an embarrassment but obviously do not care.
That’s it exactly Dusty. Going back to when that dump was Pepe’s it has had the protection of the Good Ol Boys. Ever wonder why? Why is it in the interests of certain “pillars of the community” to keep Pepes/Johnny’s open? Gee could it have to do with tons of cash being generated through illegal football cards and the drug trade? Nah not in Pittsfield. Our “pillars” would never be that corrupt…
POTUS says we have a gun problem (Smith & Wesson). I think its more M&M (Mental & Muslim).
Sooooo…. refuse common sense gun control to help reduce the probability of mass shootings is a non-starter… and ur solution is to ?????? Lock up people in mental institutions and ban all Muslims…. really ?? Typical knee jerk sound bite response to score political points …. no solutions offered …. Just like hearing urself rant I guess….
France banned guns and welcomed Muslims: how is that working out?
I agree. These people were living the American dream in this country and yet they did something like this. There was no mental illness in this case unless both husband and wife were both mentally ill. They very calmly dropped their 6 month old daughter off at grandma’s house, said they had a doctor’s appointment, and then went on a killing spree. Only months previous the very same people they murdered had given them a baby shower. This was planned for some time as all of the military weaponry they gathered shows without a doubt and they had plans to do a lot more damage.
Wilson, again the extreme rhetoric talking points and no solutions…. U really got me on that one.. whooo hoo I’m realing Ya feel vindicated now ???? Common sense gun control … And I’m sure France has less gun violence than the US… U have to do more to drive a vehicle than own a gun… Pass a written and road test …. eye exam etc.
SO u want more guns … How is that working in Somalia ???????
I disagree. These terrorists are looking for “soft targets” meaning people who are sitting ducks to be killed because they are totally defenseless. That’s how pathetic they are and disarming Americans will insure that their job of killing us will be even easier. The bad guys can always get the weapons. That’s why they are bad.
Gun laws will make some people feel better. But I don’t think someone that would shoot innocent people fellow law’s. We do need to help people with mental illness, yes open up institutions that are run properly. Would also help some of the million homeless.
Mr. JOE–I agree. A few weeks ago on the gaetani tv show he had a good program about mental illness and he described it very well from the point of a scientist. He like you feel that mental illness is a real illness that must be seen and treated like any other illness. This illness is a chemical imbalance in the brain and can be successfully treated. We must over come the thoughts that people are crazy who have this illness. I think more and more people are starting to see things this way and i think this is good
What’s your definition of common sense gun control? Do you know what the laws in CA. Are?
Voltaire just likes to spit out left wing cliches
No, I just like to watch people get all dizzy trying to spit our BS rhetoric…..
The reality is it doesn’t matter how strict a single states gun laws are if u can cross the state lines and buy weapons with no background checks… Limited mag capacity is a good think gives people like Ben Carson a chance to Bull rush attackers. Bottom line is we have to live with these types of tragedies…
The bad criminal terrorist types will always be able to get weapons. Without that they will use other means. We are focusing on the wrong issues and not facing the real threat here. By putting all the focus on gun control, people are focusing on the details, but not seeing the big picture here.
I heard on the radio yesterday that California already has strict gun laws, including a ban on high capacity bullet magazines.
Real data indicates that less crime occurs in states that allow citizens to open or conceal carry. Potential shooters might have to worry about immediate retaliation, and it might also reduce possible death tolls.
And for those of you that do not feel comfortable with a weapon…DO NOT CARRY ONE. I would feel better if you do not as well!!!
Won’t open carry cause confusion and lack of response time when law enforcement arrives on scene ??? In a situation like that how do people know whos the good guys vs the bad guys… Untrained people with guns acting like Rambo doesn’t make me feel any safer… I guess as long as we value guns over lives there is no answer…
U really think people with a death wish or are mentally ill worry about “immediate retaliation ” ???
Please….
These terrorists may not worry about immediate retaliation, but I would be happy to help arrange a meeting between them and Allah if confronted.
V,your comment was 4x longer Who’s ranting?
Well played … points for knowing how to read
Good one Potsie.
Right on joetaxpayer!
Former Officer Coco was one of the more active officers when on the Force. Another question is, was the officer doing drugs while he was active and isn’t testing required at some point during the year, for any kind of drug use?
I’d say the Officer does know recent past use of others on the force, like steroids.
So finally someone on the PPD is brought to justice. What about the steroid use scandal? Does anyone realize what continued use does to the users brain and mental condition? Doesn’t anyone see that the outbreak of crazy behavior will be a continueing problem? Anyone care to guess what is coming next?
I worked with a couple of users back in the day, that were using steroids which was and is still prevelant, because of workplace laws, drug testing is now mandatory. It is pretty easy to see, well, from my experience, who was using and who wasn’t.
Not only physically, but you can also see a sickly appearance from withdrawal, not unlike a meth user. Not saying because you look sickly you used steroids that would be blatantly false.
Speaking of steroids, does anyone know what happened to that officer who was allegedly receiving and possibly selling steroids at BN? Or was nothing done because he wasn’t stealing from the union?
Many weren’t investigated and most were swept under the rug.
The current Mayor with one swish if his pen re-open the PPD scandal and leave Tyer with a bigger crap sandwich than Ruberto left him. But don’t think he has the Chutzpah. never did.
I seem to recall some hubbub about police unions being insulted by drug testing. Are they tested or not?
All city employees should be tested every 6 months or less.
There are MA state laws against regular drug testing without reason. So it would have to be written in the contract with the union. Don’t know if it’s in there or not, but I can’t imagine the union allowing that.
I agree totally….not every six months but randomly.
Tes, Was’ left with a shick sandwich, unfortuately for him after leaving Kinnas on an Island and his actions in general, was a flop as Mayor. What kind of Forward movement will be expected with the Tyer Administration, it will be domininated by the Sigs and Gob’s of the past?
One bunch of GOBS and SIGS going and one bunch coming. Nothing will change. Rewards coming to them from tyer to pay them back for electing her. To bad gaetani didnt win he would be clearing house as he didnt lick anyones a–. and doesnt owe any one nothing. I hope he will keep on the watch. i like his tv show. no sugar coating and right to the point. Pittsfield missed the boat with him.
This is unbelievable….in 2010 Coco allegedly stole money (which he later returned) and was allowed to remain on the union board as an officer? If this happened, he should have been removed from the union board. He is lucky he wasn’t fired, because if that had happened in a private business union, the guy would have been out the door.
Dan….perhaps you could investigate and learn whose decision it was to do nothing (at that time). And I love it…..he later becomes president.
Only in Pittsfield!
The mayor would have to have known about it. Was it Ruberto? Well there you go.
He must if must have been do something right.
Yes, remember well the night Tes mike was on, and said what else is new’, concerning an objection by Super Citizen Terry.Believe the Planet wrote about that.
Only in Pittsfield. People without connections are scrutinized beyond belief for jobs or ignored altogether, but in Pittsfield if you have the right connections, even bad behavior is overlooked and you are actually given promotions. Don’t hold your breath waiting for answers since the corruption in the city goes way beyond just one person.
All of the crime in the city was also a factor in SABIC moving in my opinion. There are plenty of qualified and reliable people, however, looking for jobs in this city so I don’t think that was a factor in the company leaving the area. Many qualified young people continue to leave the Berkshires because they cannot find work. The beautiful SABIC building can’t be allowed to remain empty and needs to be filled with companies that pay well.
Coco Puffs should have just done more overtime, or did he….I wonder what he made annually, still he could not pay his bills?
All Coco’s attorney has to do is say he was dependent on drugs because of injury on the job that led to stealing. Wasn’t an officer reinstated for using roids. Quid Pro Quo, right Lori?
This has got to fall on the chief of the PPD – question is – does LT have the political backbone (aka guts) to address ?
That is a joke right?
Albany, you must be kidding. Wynn and Tyer are as close as close can be. barry and her and wynn and christina barrete are always together.Fire chief and jody phillips round out the happy couples. Talk about gob and sig will be wall to wall under tyer. The secretary and her secretariates. what a wonderful city for sigs and gobs and sobs. Lets give them all a nice big raise so they will never leave the city and that way we can be certain to take care of them at kimbal farms when they retire. Why didnt i get a city job many moons ago? Just plain stupid i guess. Getting a city job today is better than hitting the lottery. Crying in my soup!!!!
wait…wasn’t one of the campaign slams against Bianchi the 2 “provisional” chiefs ?? I was certain a CS Chief was a number #1 priority in the new dynamic, changing administration – cross that one off my list…..
Now that you mention it I have been waiting for Ms Tyer to address this situation. She had a lot to say about blight and crime on campaign trail but not a peep now??? Linda answer me this, do you think Chief Wynn has provided adequate leadership in the dept or not? If so then who is ultimately responsible for when his cops go rouge? Please answer.
Look for Coco to come back strong as Pittsfield’s next Maor.
Just heard on the radio that Coco is going to appeal his firing with the aid of his lawyer. Well, at least he is smart enough to engage a lawyer in his fight. If he beats this, he will probably be the next police chief, then can run for mayor in four years. After all, when first caught dipping in the till, he moved up to union president. His resume is looking better every day.
Only in Pittsfield…where good is evil, and evil is good!
I hear the mayor elect speak of Initiatives in Pittsfield. Exactly what does she mean? No definition in the dictionary seems to be relative to what she is saying.
Pittsfield needs to efficiently grow one-to-one initiatives

You make some good points Arlos but insiders say that the new administration has a 10 point plan for Pittsfield. Here it is.
1. Quickly customize maintainable catalysts for positive growth.
2. Quickly engineer installed base scenarios
3. Progressively administrate real-time internal or “organic” sources
4. Pompetently pontificate multimedia based “outside the box” thinking
5. Rapidiously disintermediate high-quality results
6. Phosfluorescently recaptiualize impactful platforms
7. Dramatically deliver diversity focused schemas
8. Quickly matrix elastic growth strategies
9. Objectively administrate timely innovation
10. Progressively reinvent viral collaboration and idea-sharing
True Kernel but we also need to uniquely drive dynamic innovation.
Yes, and we must insist on core competency when going after the low-hanging fruit to maximize growth opportunities so we can take a multiplicity of results-focused initiatives to the next level.

I started to cry when the Planet showed the Delco Video.
Did not know 15 percent raises over three years, did not know? where was LOw on that one?
WAtched Terry and the Planet (terry and the pirates!!). Teacher raises 15, 16, 17 percent over 3 yrs. We got hosed agin.
Who negotiated that contract, Phyllis Diller.?
The School Committee hired the firm of Dewey, Cheatum and Howe to help iron out the details of the contract .
If what was said on the plant website concerning salary increases for teachers is true shame on the elected officials serving this community. A big part of their responsibilities is to serve the general public in this community, not special interest groups. Is it too much to assume that negotiating reasonable benefit packages would be a part of these responsibilities? May I point out to those elected officials that the retired citizens of this community will receive no increase in social security benefits this coming year. Do you think there might be descrepency here? Furthermore, who among our elected officials has even bothered to publicly address these kinds of issues.
Richard, could not agree more. At what point is enough. I wish I know ,looking to sell some day not sure I’ll get what it’s worth.
