PITTSFIELD PLEADS THE 5th: CITY IS NATION’S #5 WORST DRUG-ABUSE CITY
BY DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2016) — It’s not the kind of news you’ll hear about in the Feel Good Fakery & Fiction Department that pumps out press releases to the local Mainstream Media and provides talking points to the city’s “all-is-good-and-getting-better” political “leaders.” What news? Congratulations, Pittsfield, for ranking in the Top 5 nationally in a life-defining category.
Yes, bedraggled citizens, residents, and taxpayers, your city ranks #5 in the country for abuse of prescriptive opioids. In short, Pittsfield’s “New Wave” of thrill seekers are popping pills faster than a debutante doing breath mints on her first date, shooting up more than Steph Curry, and snorting more than a raging bull.
Seventeen of the top 25 drug-abuse centers are located in the South, primarily in rural locations. Pittsfield, last we checked, sat in the citified Northeast. This tells everything you need to know about the quality of life in this once-great city.
The Top 5 in the nation for opioid drug abuse:
- Emira, NY
- Flagstaff, AZ
- Enid, OK
- Wilmington, NC
- Pittsfield, MA
Abuse of prescription drugs kills more than 16,000 people each year (source: Castlight Health. http://www.castlighthealth.com/typ/the-opioid-crisis/).
The stock response of most officials is to call for more rehab, treatment centers, meth clinics, hospital beds, and programs. The easier way to say that is the call for more public money to be thrown away (rehad doesn’t work) on the so-called drug pandemic.
THE PLANET doesn’t doubt that drug use is rising. Nonetheless, we don’t buy the response of public officials, who are as addicted to rehab as Linsday Lohan. They have bought into the psychobabble of the drug treatment industry that has grown wealthy peddling “treatments” that don’t work. If they did work, addicts wouldn’t be in rehab over and over again. A successful treatment would show an unbroken record of one-and-done. That, however, would greatly reduce the profit margins of treatment centers.
These centers can be high-end, such as Promises Treatment Centers at a cost of $48,000 a month,or more plebian, such as Minnesota’s Hazelden Center, one of the world’s largest, where “a typical 28-day stay costs $26,000” (source: The Washington Post, Aug. 8, 2010).
These centers reward their investors with huge profits. As with all businesses, the idea is to grow that profitability. Drug treatment can only do that by increasing the number of addicts and making sure of repeat business.
23 million Addicts, or about 10% of America
According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, there are more than 23 million drugs addicts in America (age 12 and older). Of these, a little less than 11% (2.5 million) received care at a rehab center (2012). This leaves a giant market of new customers for the predatory industry to tap. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates $35 billion in untapped addicts. That’s a mighty tempting target.
The drug treatment industry lobbies politicians relentlessly. Why do you think there are mandates that take away a community’s rights to say no to drug treatment facilities, or have you forgotten Pittsfield’s battle over the methadone clinic in downtown? The rehab industry also has pushed to alter local law. Treatment centers can be adapted to fit into neighborhoods, for example, the private single-home residence that becomes a “sober living home.” Pittsfield has a large number of such “residences,” which vanish from the tax rolls.
The drug treatment industry has also successfully lobbied to implement new federal and state laws that put payments for drug addiction on the same treatment footing as true medical illnesses such as cancer and diabetes. Moreover, according to Forbes magazine online (April 27, 2015), there is “[a]lmost no federal, state[,] or municipal oversight for credentials or treatment pricing at such facilities.
Yes, Big Drugs has brainwashed the public to believe that taking a drug to the point of addiction is a “disease.” It is no such thing, of course. Drug use involves a free-will choice to engage in dangerous behavior. Forbes again: “The AMA first defined alcoholism as an illness (1956) then a disease (1966), but there’s little scientific evidence to support a disease diagnosis.”
Drug rehab businesses often go the “non-profit” route. This tax dodge allows enormous profits for the owners. With Pittsfield’s growing drug problem, it might be a business for you to consider. Check this out: How to Start a Drug Rehab Business – Startup Business

Perhaps the best treatment might no treatment at all. If someone wants to kick a drug, be it alcohol, heroin, meth, or anything else, let them grow up, quit playing a childish (but often fatal) game, and make the adult decision to do it.
Drug addiction is a voluntary behavior. The hordes of drug users in Pittsfield are choosing to do partake. There’s nothing in the social contract that says we owe them special privileges.

Pittsfield is a sad place. Pittsfield is #5 in the country for abuse of prescriptive opioids. There are no living wage jobs anymore in Pittsfield. About 70% of local residents are reliant on welfare and social services programs. All K – 6 public school students now receive free lunches due to Pittsfield’s high per capita poverty rate.
We all know who is responsible for Pittsfield’s economic demise! The answer is the Good Old Boys network that took care of themselves at the expense of the diminishing taxpayers. When the lovely Linda Tyer introduces her Fiscal Year 2017 municipal budget soon, Pittsfield politics will produce another record setting spending plan, while more businesses close and more people move away. Then, the lovely Linda Tyer will raise taxes even more when she finances the new Taconic High School project. The downward spiral will continue to get worse for Pittsfield.
After Pittsfield politics raises your local taxes, they will hand out awards to each other for their achievements in “helping” people and the community.

How was this No. 5 distinction determined? I would assume they must have gotten at least some of their information from high level local politicians or Berkshire Medical Center which probably sees several over doses a week. Perhaps the local coroner?
Sadly, it is probably one of the true economic engines the city has and they can’t even talk about it. They need to hush it up. This sordid underbelly of Pittsfield taints the tourist mecca facade the city leaders would like you to believe moves the city forward. Another true powerful economic engine is all the agencies and business s that have sprung up to deal with the aftermath. Extra police, extra probation and court personnel, extra ambulances and medical people, drug clinics, funeral homes.
Perhaps the city could print up promotional T-shirts that say, WE ARE NUMBER 5. But don’t make too many because next year we might be number four.
I agree. The statistics coming out in just the last week have not been good. Pittsfield has the second highest number of people in the state ending up in the emergency room (many are children) because locals can’t afford dental care. Over 120 cases of child abuse are reported each month in this county. Now we have the distinction of being the 5th worse city in the country for drug abuse.
Stop making The Planet the “bad guys” because we are trying to wake people up to what is happening in this city. The first step to healing is to admit there is a problem. Pittsfield is in denial.
Heh you just gave Pittsfield under the lovely Linda its’ new slogan, “We’re Number 5” –it will be on banners, Tshirts, coffee mugs, and those big foam hands which will show all five fingers not one.
Not to worry, there will be a new school and a 160 mil water plant that will be economic engines for our future. Not to mention Hotel North and the Clinic.
Hotel on North? Wow how convenient it is the facility opens just in time to house the people working on and consulting on the new school. We can flood downtown during the project with out of town engineers, architects and the sort, we can and will see an increase in meals, drinks and frivolity all the elected, appointed and anointed ones will tell us what a wise “investment” we made and downtown is back to its vibrant self.
Whatta ya wanna bet?
More troubling accolades for the Pitts. This appears to be synergistic with Pittsfield being labelled the drunkest city in MA. (247wallst.com special report, 11/11/2015).
Redemption, however is that Pittsfield ranks as the 9th best place to be a teacher in the country. (Goodcall.com).
ps: This is not CG.
I bet if they had a poll for the best place to be a drunk teacher we’d at least get beat out by Adams-Cheshire. Not by too much unfortunately.
Cg would never use the phrase troubling accolades, spelled correctly! I believe you.
I was astonished to read this story. Why do local doctors write so many opioid prescriptions?? It boggles the mind (literally).
Another statistic was released showing the cities where employers are most impacted by opioid abuse. Pittsfield was not on that list. That means that many of the people who are abusing prescription opioids in Pittsfield ARE NOT EMPLOYED.
Not shocking since there aren’t any jobs.
What is the definition of crazy ? Put a hotel in the same area were you have a drug treatment center and then expect victors to rent rooms while they are in town.Remember Pittsfield’s battle over the methadone clinic in downtown?
The High Five seems to be thriving.
Breaking News
Due to a breach of contract and lack of fiduciary responsibility to
the taxpayers of the City of Pittsfield and for denying taxpayers a vote on the new Taconic High School Project—a lawsuit is being filed today against the City Of Pittsfield asking that the THS Project
be halted until said suit is fully adjudicated in the court system.
This project will have serious financial consequences fof the City of Pittsfield Taxpayers. Because we do not know how the
majority of the city’s taxpayers and electorate feel about this
project, no further work of any sort connected to this project should
occur. The residents of this city must be given a say as to whether
they approve of this project. Only after the residents have been given a vote in the affirmative shall this project be given the go ahead to proceed.
Wow is this really happening or you just pulling our legs?
Woah iif true this is great news. And more details.
As for todays work, Dan you have given a great example of the type fof story the bb must start writing if it is to survive new ownership or not. You described it in a post this week, relevant, edgy, pure journalism…Take a lesson BB from your teacher DV.
The school will be up and running before this thing even gets a hearing. did you forget where we live and who is running the justice system around here?
True. It’s like the possibility of Hillary getting indicted for all her shenanigans by the Obama administration. They are all buddies and will protect each other no matter how many illegal things they do.
On iBerkshires, we have an article about the lawsuit stopping the proposed THS filed by Pittsfield’s hometown hero, the Water Wizard! The article features a stunning reversal of position from the Mayor “I always thought there was not a convincing need for this project, and definitely not enough public discussion about options to save the taxpayers’ hard earned money”. Click above for a hot off the presses article!!!!!
John stop making things up and please mow your lawn
John, you’re funny
I found no such article there.
That’s the whole point.
Everybody STOP! Calm down, Kathleen Amuso is happy because Taconic is starting on her birthday Fri the 13th. As soon as the new school is done Pittsfield will be all rainbows and butterflies! Money will shoot out of your butts! Taxes will drop by 50% and jobs created by the new school will pay above average wages with free health care. Roads will be paved with gold and pot hole free. This is all true because the school Dept. said so.
She knew a ecomomic engine will revolve around the new school. The bottom line and Amuso is happy for our kids.
I liked when AMuso to the chatter box twins to be quiet.
Amanda why is she happy for our kids? We have the worst performing school system in the State.
Just streamed mr. G’s show. Watch Friday for more details. Also streamed the council meeting too. Powerful points made by him.
G mail is the one filing suit see his face book page
Who is G mail?
You think drugs are absent in the Schools?Think again.
So who is writing these prescriptions that find their way to the street? Is it Drs. From far away, then they are smuggled in to town? Is it local Drs. Writing prescriptions because they are duped? Is it a combination of both? If the Drs are being duped on the prescriptions are they being duped on workman’s comp and disability as well? Does the DA’s office dig into where the pills are coming from? I mean are the prescriptions being written in Florida, the pills then smuggled through Kansas and headed for the mean streets of Pittsfield? There is a lot of unanswered questions here. Interesting though that the hospital is in the game even more with their announcement today.
whadda ya think about dat
Elvis said he will not raise the School Budge to 3. 7. The high number should have been way below to begin with, then go from there.
Elvis was formerly Grandpa Munster Jr. who currently has left the Building.
Will Terry Kinnas find out what is proposed to be cut from the School Budget, if possible? JIV said he knows the Mayor is sick over having to cut?Taxpayers aren’t. This Mayor must be relieved of her duties. a s a p What a dud.
If 150 positions need to be cut, then cut them. Don’t go into detail on every position and unemployment figures, that’s not the Mayor or the Superintendents job either.
The Lovely Linda has caved in just like the rest of them to the almighty school dept. That’s why I didn’t vote for her, I voted write in for DV.
Jake called a timeout, said we’re dealing with a lot of money.
Let’s hope our media heroes saw this meeting. Jives comments about the Mayor AGONIZING over the Budget was his best nonsense comment yet.
The Planet is the best, keep it good.
