PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION, MAY 20-22, 2016) – Mayor Tyer, you wanted it. Well, sister, you got it. You got to be mayor. You said you were ready. You campaigned for the corner office with crime one of your major platform planks. So tell THE PLANET and our readers: Did you construct that dais out of rotten wood? We ask, because since you’ve been in office, crime has broken out of prison and is now terrorizing Pittsfield’s mean streets like never before. Yes, Linda, it’s gotten worse.

You took office, and you kept Michael Wynn as police chief (acting). Is it because he’s done such a great job? Is it because he cuts a good figure and says the right thing? Is it because he’s a minority, and that looks good for a city that obviously has problems with people of color? Is it because he’s the main squeeze of the communications director of your campaign, the woman you put on the PEDA board despite her near-total lack of qualifications for an economic development enterprise?

Gunfire Erupts … and What Happened with PHS Students?

Within a 24-hour period this week (ending Thursday) there were four incidents involving gunfire on city streets. That’s just the beginning of it. The domestic violence, routine drug incidents (ODs, transactions), stabbings, and other fights never make the paper and never draw a cop. They are “settled” privately, if you get our drift.

On the campaign trail, Madame Mayor, didn’t you say that the out-of-control crime wave was “unacceptable?” Will “unacceptable” now be your equivalent of Sara Hathaway‘s “aberration?” Didn’t you promise change? Didn’t you speak of a plan? All the good, decent citizens who are not under siege in their own homes would like to see it?

And while were asking questions, couldn’t you have done better than post a lame statement on Facebook, of all places, after this recent wave of shootings? This is what you, the mayor of Pittsfield, wrote on Facebook:

This is hard. Really hard. I know how upsetting the ongoing gang and gun violence is to all of you. I’m distressed, too. Please be assured that every available resource is being deployed and a great deal of advance planning is constantly taking place to proactively engage in these very serious circumstances. I understand that you’d like to have the details about police strategy. Unfortunately, when we release that kind of information to the public it also becomes available to those we pursue. I’m determined to get this under control and I need your help. See something, know something, say something. And I’ll say this, too, even before I became mayor I had a great deal of respect for our police department. Since taking office my respect and admiration for their diligence, strategy, and commitment to keeping us safe has grown immensely. Without their persistence our situation would be much worse. Let’s be on their side.

‘Distressed?” We Bet You Are

This doesn’t cut it. This is President Bill Clinton “feeling your pain.” This is President Muffley in Stanley Kubrick‘s Dr. Strangelove on the phone with the Soviet premier. Muffley has just told the premier that there has been an inadvertent launch of a hydrogen bomb attack on Russia. After hearing the Soveit honcho express his dismay, Muffley says, “Well how do you think I feel? … I’m just as sorry about it as you are.”  This is taking the easy way out. Issue a statement well hidden from the streets, telling the besieged, overtaxed citizens that you’re “distressed, too.”

Yes. We bet you are, Mayor Tyer. Could it be your distressed for political reasons? Not that you would make politics out of so serious an issue, eh? Could it be you see political support (and votes) slipping away? We recall during the campaign, how you appeared at a rally at the Christian Center on Linden Street after the 4th of July massacre — which, by the way, just vanished. No one has been caught or held accountable. It just — well, for some extremely odd and suspicious reason, it “just didn’t happen” (wink, wink).

THE PLANET, you will recall, Madame Mayor, was there too. We criticized the mayor for not getting out in front of the press and public, in a news conference, to make a statement and take questions. You agreed. You promised THE PLANET that if you were in the same spot as mayor, you would do just that. You would call a press conference, at which, by the way, THE PLANET would be expressly invited, and speak to We The People. You said you wouldn’t read a canned, prepared statement but speak from the heart. You would then take “any and all questions.” More importantly, you promised you were be open and “share everything we knew.”

Right.

“Every available resource is being deployed?” How can that be true, when in the few blocks of torn-up North Street up to Maplewood Avenue, there are 58 city cops and sheriff’s deputies getting fat, raking in $40 an hour (or whatever the fee is these days), ignoring traffic, drinking coffee, and surfing the web on their smart phones?

“Every available resource?” Have you called in the state police?

“Every available resource?” Have you cut the over-bloated school department budget to put more dollars into public safety?

Of course, even that wouldn’t be the answer. You are now reaping the rewards of 30 years of allowing the city’s economny to “go native.” You were a part of that as a member of WHEN, a city councilor, and now as mayor. GE left, and after that, instead of rebuilding, local politicians and officials circled the wagons and began to set up the cliques and “Members Only” clubs that rewarded those who played ball (and kept their mouths shut) with big-pay, little-show jobs — virtually all the PSD administration, for example, and people like PEDA chief exec Corydon Thurston, who gets, what, $75 grand and bennies for NOT BEING THERE and running his businesses in North Adams … Corydon Thurston who let Nuclea skip town owing the public money.

“Every Available Resource” When Your Clamping Down on Information?

“Every available resource” when you are personally championing five more years of tax relief for the Beacon Cinema? After more than $20 million of public money and nine years, The Beacon is failing, and you want to extend the tax breaks? Surely, you jest! Is this the price of being handed the corner office by The Suits? Are you making good on a private campaign pledge to Someone or a bunch of Someones? What else could it be? Five more years of throwing good money after bad will not save this failing enterprise. We’re talking 14 years of taxbreaks for a multimillionaire developer who hasn’t earned a penny of it?

Why not tax break for Pasquale at the Highland Restaurant, which has been in business since the early 1930s? Why not 14 years of tax easements for the Rasers, who have managed to keep Carr Hardware not just alive but thriving through good, old-fashioned customer service. Why not Mark Papa at the fabulous Lantern? He’s carried on for his dad, and they are decades, mayor, DECADES, into making this city a better place by their presence. For that matter, why not repay Jim Shulman and his wife the $73,000+ they’ve coughed up in taxes for nine year on an empty lot, soon to be home of the Carousel. That project, by the way, didn’t ask for a dime in public money. It was raised privately and the work done by more than 200 volunteers. But no, you wouldn’t want to help out one of the Good Guys.

Why? Help us out. We don’t get it.

Would you not agree that after nine years and $20 mill in free money, that enterprise ought to be able to put on its “Big Boy” pants and make it on its merits?

All available resources, when you have shilled for a $200 million new high school the city doesn’t need and can’t afford? You’ve gotta be shitting the good people of Pittsfield, Madame Mayor.

In your Facebook statement (“Facebook? FACEBOOK??), you offered a pathetic excuse for not informing the public about these horrible events. You wrote: “I understand that you’d like to have the details about police strategy. Unfortunately, when we release that kind of information to the public it also becomes available to those we pursue.” That’s a line of wet crap, and you know it, Madame Mayor. The human scum that’s infected this town and is living rent-free in public housing, Sec. 8 space, and other enabling domiciles for vermin and riffraff won’t learn anything from such information that they don’t know already … or how is it that they are always light years ahead of the police?

After telling us why you can’t share information, in the next sentence, you ask ordinary citizens, at the risk of their lives, to speak up and rat. Isn’t that a tad hypocritical?

And jeezus, your fawning kiss-up to the police department provides the fitting capper to your Facebook profile in cowardice. You “have a great deal of respect for the PPD?” You have to tell us that? Why? Something’s off about such hollow praise.

You end with the greatest insult of all: “Let’s be on their side.”

Earth to The Lovely Linda: You are addressing the good, law-abiding citizens of Pittsfield with that statement. Obviously, you’re not talking to the human dross that need to be exterminated (maybe we should bring back some dictatorial justice; one of the underused city parks might make a good place for a concentration camp where we would throw the gang-bangers; the drug dealers; the fat, white cows they impregnate so they can get all the freebies — you get the idea. We won’t draw you a map).

You have blundered badly now on the Beacon request and your mishandling of an out-of-control crime wave. You seem to have that “deer-caught-in-the-headlights” look. You appear tenuous and weak. Tell us why we should believe that you are not over your head? THE PLANET is open anytime for your comments — by e-mail, on TV, here, over privately, over java.

I agree 100% about the carousel. If there was ever a venture that should get a tax break it is that. It should have been first in line and I cannot believe that not one councilor or city big wig would not have suggested it and gotten behind making it happen.

The priorities in this city are upside down. It is like Supermans Bizzaro world for those of you who remember the old comic books. Completely the opposite of what it should be.

The Berkshire Carousel is a 501-c-3. No taxes paid at all to anyone. Heard they asked Dalton and Laneborough for a fair amount of “free stuff” so they wound up back in Pittsfield, home of “free stuff”.

I would submit that this carousel will bring in more people than that theater ever dreamed of. And it is for the kids which we pretend to care about except when we can’t skim money off the premise.

If I were a city father I would ask Jim what he needed to make this happen and I would give it to him instead of trying to extort money from the project.

Contibuting to class prejustice and caste segregation blended with not in my backyard, is when you verbally defend a group you consider discriminated against satisfying your altrustistic ego, while your actions belie something else, like sending your kids to a small rural school assuring they don’t socialize with the children of the discriminated downtrodden whom you claim to identify with.

There are other reasons one might opt out of the Pittsfield public school system. If a parent believes their child would be better prepared for their future by going to school elsewhere they should do it if they can.
Based on the phony “a 5 level is a 3 level” baloney would be reason enough for me to opt my kid out. Obviously the people who run the system are embarrassed by what they produce. What other data may be altered we do not know because the system is in Bianchi bunker mode.

Her good press and political friends that wanted Bianchi out of office probably isn’t what she expected. She has to wonder why she left the 40 hour or less clerks job selling fishing licenses etc. that would have been tenured this year. There she quietly went to work every day, nobody knew or cared who her boyfriend was and the only question she had to answer was, “next item Madam Clerk”.

Dan, this is, without a doubt, your best post ever. It paints an ugly but true picture of Pittsfield’s demise, and the reasons for it.

An acting chief for several years in blatant violation of state civil service law.

A new high school we can’t afford and don’t need.

A huge subsidy for a failing movie theater when all the others have failed.

A bloated school department to go with a bloated staff.

The mayor hiding behind Facebook – Priceless!

Hathaway denied the problem and Ruberto campaigned on crime and won.

Ruberto brought in the state police and that did not work.

Bianchi brought in the sherriffs and that did not work either.

Tyer campaigned on crime and bragged about her million dollar crime prevention program. Not a peep on that this year.

But as Barry said it is safe to walk the streets right? Sure it is, as long as you don’t get hit by a stray round, or stabbed, robbed, or beat bynone of the many ybm’s terrorizing this city.

Here’s an idea to go with the bathrooms based on feelings – A full time affirmative action officer to assure more unqualified employees. You gotta be kidding me.

So crazy that the mayor used Facebook to communicate with the public. If this site hadn’t told me about it I would have thought she issued no statement at all. This is not effective communication with the public regarding such a serious issue as the crime problem here in this city.

I have a bad feeling that this summer is going to be bad for crime in this city. Already I am dreading the 4th of July (a day I really used to look forward to) due to all the illegal fireworks that will be going off day and night weeks before and weeks after the actual 4th of July. Remember that last summers terrible shooting in which one young man was killed and others shot in a parking lot took place on 4th of July when so many illegal fireworks were going off in the city that nobody recognized actual gun fire which is why the culprits so easily pulled off this crime without being caught.

Agree with you Dusty. I want the mayor to go out in public and speak to the public. Facebook is just too impersonal. Maybe millenials know to go to Facebook for everything. The rest of us don’t know that. I still think Facebook isn’t a direct enough way to communicate when you are the mayor. Between friends it’s fine, but not for a government official who wants to communicate with those he or she serves.

You are full of it Still! Facebook is not a news outlet! There is so much misinformation on Facebook you could sink a ship. How about just plain old face to face communication which would allow questions and demand real answers. How about the Chief of Police briefing the public with real answers, not just, “call the department and report a crime, or can’t talk about it as it is under investigation.” We have had enough of the bull. It is really insulting to think those in the corner office and the police department think we are so stupid that we would fall for their empty promises and statements. It will be a long four years and I shutter to think what will happen to Pittsfield by then.

I am torn between pathetic and sad. There are so many reasons that we find ourselves in this situation. The Mayor has chosen to simply minimize the entire situation. We don’t need puff pieces with meaningless statements that shriek responsibility. We need action.
Mayor, based upon your abilities to leverage your political connections in a manner consistent with furthering the objectives long held and clearly defined by those who have proceeded you most recently in office. And having also managed to obtain the ability to extract a large portion of the results of the taxpayers work product. Only to reward those who have assisted you and have demonstrated that they will cover for your shortcomings and your apparent lack of leadership with both the people’s hard earned monies and now their personal safety.
See anyone can spin anything any way they want with a long flowery statement with words empty of meaning. No we don’t need another summit look how well that worked out. We need to first OWN the situation Appear in public outline the root causes and the overall strategy for rectifying the situation I am sorry we don’t want all the gory details but the gangbangers already have a good idea on how to avoid detection.
Hear something say something? If I recall that didn’t work out to well for three people, they wound up in trash bags in a ditch. Or how can I be assured my statement and information won’t be the lost to the cyber world forever because of an inconvenient, yet totally convenient hard drive crash. Or maybe my records of a crash in which a guy was seriously hurt and left for dead will disappear from on office area in which someone’s daddy has control?
Sadly Ms. Mayor Trust and respect must be built, established, and maintained over long periods of time. While you cannot be blamed nor are you responsible for the sins of past administrations you can and will be responsible for the fruit in that basket as long as you clutch to that basket and continue to pick the fruit in that orchard.

The first step toward stopping crime in this city is to stop the culture of lawlessness that pervades Pittsfield. For example when illegal fireworks are allowed in the summer and get totally out of control around 4th of July this sends a message that nobody cares about the law in this city. It becomes the wild wild west and nothing is done. The politicians live in the higher end neighborhoods of the city and aren’t personally bothered by the craziness that happens around the North Street area so they do nothing. Each year the situation gets worse. These are small steps that could be taken to rein in the culture of lawlessness that exists here. It would send a message that illegal activities are not tolerated. Small steps could bring bigger results like cutting down on major crimes.

I am no fan of Rudy Giuliani the national politician, but I lived in NYC before and after he became mayor and his crime fighting strategy and tactics were EXTREMELY effective; The busted window theory put into practice. Pat is exactly right. Start with enforcing the small violations vigorously and aggressively; public drinking, dope smoking and intoxication, illegal fireworks, all the penny-ante stuff that is routinely ignored. The people you enforce those items on are the SAME people committing the bigger crimes, they do that other stuff when they’re “off duty.” Enforce the little stuff, make it known that crap won’t be tolerated…take control! The big stuff will then take care of itself.

The top of my car was destroyed by fireworks because dummies who didn’t know what they were doing had firecrackers that didn’t go up into the air high enough so when they came down they were still burning. They landed on top of my car and took all of the paint off. It was terrible. The fireworks were also landing in the middle of our road still burning. Can you imagine if they had landed on top of somebody’s roof or somebody walking down the street? It’s like living in a city with a bunch of criminals. They don’t value anybody’s property. There is no respect.

I love any reference to “Dr. Strangelove”, and that scene was hilarious, but I think you’re giving too much importance to the medium of the mayor’s message. FB is the way people get immediate news. The detailed analysis comes the next day, or at least later in the day in the mainstream media. The real assessment of the mayor’s leadership will come in the budget.

I hope you’re not saying that leadership is born simply from the expenditure of taxpayer capital? More importantly leadership is shown and born from the expenditure of political capital. Dan,
I would like to address some of your juvenile rants that you refer to as good journalism. The Mayor has been in office only five months and has

1. Saved the city $ 400,000 by having the finance director Matt Kerwood Apply for better terms on bond issuance from old debt.Leaving several councilors dumbfounded. Most notably Melissa Mazzeo even wanted to roll other debt in with it.Kerwood explained patiently along with Mayor Tyer that was not how bonds work. I watched that meeting and the common refrain was ” This has never been done before. The councilors had the ” deer in the headlights look not Linda Tyer.

2. Mayor Tyer has sent I believe 12 individuals to the police academy. She promised 27 and in 5 months is well on her way to meeting her promise. To the citizens.

3. It is her right as The Mayor to surround with who she deems best qualified to do the job. Your Bigoted Trump statement left me greatly disturbed ,that she hired him because of his race.Chief Wynn is well educated and engages the community with professionalism and street smarts.I have attended his neighborhood meeting . He can not roll tanks down the streets Dan and can’t arrest individuals till the commit crimes.
4. Mayor Tyer has said on PCTV. That she owned this problem not blaming it the previous mayor who took ownership of nothing. That to me is a true test of leadership.
5. Christina Barrrett is a educated professional woman who out maneuvered a political machine of Bowler,Mazzeo, Bianchi and should not be referred to as a squeeze. (another Trumpism) Dan she is dynamic and engaging and what will attract professional women to the city.
6. Mayor Tyer is slow and deliberate on replacing department heads . No Swail or Berkshire Works debacle, due to lack of good vetting.

7. Facebook. Is the most used platform for communication on earth .It is more relevant to communication with the people she serves and more effective.just look around and see how many. People are looking at their phones.
8. Dan she has been in office for 5 months and is not running from the drug issue and the crime issue that accompanies it.But she is also not responsible for something that is a nationwide epidemic in states meeting budget constraints from the Great Recession .Stop being a armchair critic and you will learn its more involved than your venomous quip.
9.I Find It most disturbing how you subtly imply that cause Mayor Tyer is a attractive women that she is over her head and to refer to her as sister.I find it a slap in to young women and very out of character for a site I thought was tough but professional.I would hate to see your site have as much relevance as MySpace .

Finally , I would expect you to offer ,MayorTyer,Chritina Barett an
apology.

I have great respect for law enforcement officers and do not know why anyone would want to get into that field. People are nuts. But, for Pittsfield, I do think it is time for a new chief. And it might be much better if this chief comes from far far away and is not selected by local politicians. And no, I do not know how this could happen but I do believe that the political establishment within the city (elected or not) is doing more overall damage than the gang bangers at this time.

Madam Mayor. It’s time for tough love for your city, not reading nor reposting prepared scripts to social media or memorizing written prose authored by your advisors. It’s time to display leadership.

I predict that the CC will endorse the mayor’s TIF proposal for the Beacon. A few of them will voice some concern (to look good to their constituents) but in the end ALL will vote for it.

Just my prediction! Would love to be wrong!

what I would like to hear is something about the death of my good friend Anthony Colucci it will be 12 years since he was murdered and I have yet to ever hear a word of anything that’s going on in his case. Pittsfield has such a good success rate of catching bad guys who committed horrible crimes usually they catch them within a couple days I don’t understand why it takes so long to catch the person who did this to my friend. there is a suspect but he has never been charged in connection to the crime. I want to know what’s going on as do all his friends and family! Anthony deserves Justice the person who did this needs to be caught he is still out here but that is never talked about. this person is a monster I want something done about this.

Hey Dan, the only reports I’m finding on the internet of 5 Pittsfield High students being detained for a gun this week…occurred in Pittsfield, IL, near Peoria! You have your facts right on this one? Is there a link you can post from the other, non-Eagle sources? I was just interested in learning more but my searches all turned up stories involving Pittsfield IL students. If that’s the case, what an odd coincidence!

The police did some changes in lower raking officers as a sacrifice know it is time to look at the top. Instead of trying to give the Beacon tax breaks the Mayor time would be better spent trying to help those people who are about to loose there jobs 500 jobs is a big loss Pittsfield. She would show true leadership if she would really do what the people want. When she was campaign she liked going to the poor neighborhoods and pretending how she was going to look out for them. Do you think they want a rich man from the Beacon to get another tax break.

and if you are planning on taking the family to a movie this weekend consider the Berkshire Mall Regal theater. Very nice…fair prices….no one is going to rifle through your belongings…and berate you because somehow a cheerio got into your purse. plenty of well lit parking.

and the odds of getting shot or mugged are considerably less. I have their web site in my favorite places so I can see what is playing and at what times.

and they will appreciate your business

and while they do not pay taxes to Pittsfield they do pay taxes to Lanesboro and they have never EVEN ONCE pulled a pity party with tears and violins asking for a handout

the choice is yours

Totally agree dusty. The 2nd time we went to the Beacon they went through my wife’s purse. She was not a happy camper, in fact if we didn’t have to park a ridiculous distance away she would have preferred to go back and leave it in the car. The big find was that she had a open roll of life savers and she had to get rid of it. I find it odd that they never asked me if I had anything in my pockets. We wouldn’t go back there even if it was free.

Dan, I believe there will more viewers and responses to this article than any other you have done. I could be wrong about the hits, but the contributing citizens here in Pittsfield and citizens in the surrounding areas also have had enough of it and will bypass Pittsfield as much as possible to do business because of the safety factor. Maybe instead of fancy welcoming signs, some new fancy high crime city and enter at your own risk signs are in order. Mayor McGruff needs to get tuff like she campaigned on.

Calls for out of town applicants for Police Chief have come and gone several times in the history of the PPD. The PD never wanted it and neither did the Suits. They want someone they can “handle” and not someone from the “outside” with progressive ideas of policing and no attachment to Pittsfield politics and nepotism.
And Pat, stop banging the drum on fireworks complaints. It doesn’t lead to hardened criminals any more than jay walking or spitting on the sidewalk. There are more complaints on fireworks during the holidays than ANY PD ANYWHERE can field. Some PD’s even refuse to answer them. And, people complain even when they are legal. Think of arresting 1 person for every firework complaint (which is ludicrous because when the cops arrive, who admits posession?). The PD and SO would be so overwhelmed that other so-called, Quality of Life (I hate that phrase) and REAL public safety issues would be ignored. Just be a little tolerant, the Fourth will come and go and we’ll be back into winter when people can call in anonymous complaints on their neighbors for the heinous crime of “All Night Parking!” Oh the horror and inhummanity!

Still the fireworks are illegal. And they get worse every year. Bigger, louder and more dangerous. It needs to be tamped down before some loco decides he can blow up something besides air. In my neighborhood it seems like there are competitions. Every year they try to outdo each other with more and more explosives. It has really gotten out of hand and sooner or later someone is going to blow their head off.

Pat

Reply to  Ghost Rider

No, that’s not what I’m saying. Obviously arresting every person who has illegal fireworks would be impossible since so many people have them in this city, but that’s not the idea. Fine some people for the illegal fireworks and the message will spread that it isn’t going to be tolerated. Nobody will know if they could be the ones fined. You have to start somewhere. All the illegal fireworks create an atmosphere of complete lawlessness during 4th of July and the days leading up to that day and even afterwards. If people think illegal fireworks are being tolerated and nothing will be done about it, the situation will only get worse.

Pat
Pat
Reply to  Ghost Rider

I didn’t say it leads to hardened criminals but it’s not brain surgery to admit that the type of atmosphere created by all of these illegal fireworks everywhere create an atmosphere where people will take risks like what happened last summer when all the legal fireworks ended and young people ended up sprawled in a parking lot, one dead.

Hate to say it but teachers should be happy as hell. They knew what they were getting into and why when they signed up for the job. They work half the year and get a full year pay, they get full benefits which are better than most in the area, they get a pension of 80% once they are vested and lifetime health insurance, they get to have a second career at and age where they can still have one if they choose, they get all vacations and state and federal holidays off and paid, they have a union who protects them and fights even though they are strangling the local budgets, and all of this they knew and accepted the position. Personally, I know it is a tough job, but many jobs are tough. If morale is low must be from poor leadership because the teachers are getting exactly what they signed up for. I’m not against teachers but I don’t see why there should be low morale unless its leadership. Let’s cut out starting at some of the top positions and make a real difference. Of course they won’t do this because they couldn’t threaten the mayor with teacher layoffs which will get blamed on her even though she doesn’t have control over how the school department spends it’s budget. Fed up completely and can’t imagine how to handle the biggest problem in our area which is crime. Businesses are not going to move here because of it. Some will leave because of it. Families don’t want to stay or move here because of it. Where does the money come from to pay to have the problems of crime come from? it has to come from somewhere… please enlighten me and help the mayor if you can with ideas and not just complaints.

I don’t know what the rules are for other cities but in Pittsfield apparently the first five cars can blown through a recently changed red light. You have a much better chance of getting broadsided than shot. Perhaps you can’t stop the shooting but can slow down the red light running.

Like the school committee too many departments in the city have too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

Can I say Indians anymore? Can’t keep up with the PC movement.

Great show Thursday night Dan. Have any city councilors or school committee members offered to come on your show? Why does it seem that these people beg for your vote so they can be public “servants” and then they want to hide from the public when it comes to questions about their job? Have they been told not to speak to anyone or is it their own personal fear of unworthiness?
