ANOTHER MURDER ROCKS PITTSFIELD; IMPACT OF UPTICK IN GUNPLAY FELT BY NORTH STREET BUSINESSES
BY DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, TUESDAY, JULY 19, 2016) — With reports of gunfire on John and Lincoln streets by posters to THE PLANET, it came as scant surprise to learn of a shooting and murder at 343 Columbus Ave. early Sunday morning. The three-story house faces the entrance to John Street. Are they two separate incidents or was the Columbus shooting mistakenly identified as taking place on John? We were there today.
Police sources, speaking on condition of strict confidentiality, say it appears to be two separate events. That has not been reported elsewhere, but it may contain a clue.
THE PLANET was unable to get independent confirmation of separate shootings at John and Columbus, but it comes one week after a near-fatal shooting on Second Street and last night’s suspicious fire on Robbins Avenue. Neighborhood residents there, speaking with THE PLANET today, spoke of “a loud “boom” followed by instant fire. It bore all the markings of arson. All three incidents took place within a throw’s stone from downtown North Street.
Was Police Response Time Adequate?
THE PLANET published first word of the Columbus Avenue mayhem, before any other medium. RobEM posted at 6:09 a.m. of the incident police say occurred near 2 a.m. They identified the victim as Joe Brown, 38, who lived at the house. Preliminary information revealed Brown died from a single bullet fired into his chest. Brown answered a knock on the door, took a bullet, then staggered to the driveway, where he died.
Derek Gentile of The Berkshire Eagle added details to a report THE PLANET heard from neighborhood residents, who told us people were upset because “the cops took their sweet time.”
From Gentile’s story:
There was some comment by neighbors at the scene that police were slow to respond. But that was due to the nature of the initial report, according to Captain Stanley Caesar of the Pittsfield Fire Department.
The call initially came in as an unresponsive person, according to Caesar, who was also on the scene on Sunday morning. Fire Department records show the 911 call came in at 2 a.m. as an unresponsive person on Columbus Avenue, he said. The call came from a cell phone and was initially directed to the Massachusetts State Police.
Because it was a report of an unresponsive person and not a gunshot wound, the call was then forwarded to the Pittsfield Fire Department said Caesar. According to fire department records, a unit was on scene by 2:02 a.m., he said.
“That’s when we realized that it was not an unresponsive individual, but a gunshot injury,” said the fire captain. At that point, Pittsfield police were notified, he said.
Good work there by our colleague Gentile.
Impact of Shootings Hit North Street Hard
A resident of John Street told THE PLANET she heard “several men” arguing around 1 a.m. Sunday followed by what sounded like a firecracker popping. She said she realized it was a gunshot when a neighbor came running telling her to get inside. Less than an hour later, someone gunned Brown down at 343 Columbus Ave., less than half a mile from North Street.
A downtown store owner, who asked that no name be used, said he feared the incident “would only make a bad summer worse.” He cited a steep drop in business, which he attributed to “the tearing up” of the street from Streetscape for the fourth year in a row and the escalating violence. “It’s so bad that [the city] has put up a sign saying that the stores are still open.”
Asked if he was satisfied with the city’s response to the situation, he said “No but really, what can be done? No one listens.” What about Downtown Pittsfield Inc.? He laughed. “Are you kidding me?” He said Berkshire Business Equipment has pulled out of downtown, with R. J. Stohr Jewelers moving soon. He predicted “at least a couple more” businesses would abandon North Street before summer ends.
A woman who recently worked at Hotel on North said management there told staff to make no mention about trouble or violence in or near downtown. She said, “They wanted us to pretend everything was hunky dory.”
Gunfire, fire bombs, and empty streets would say otherwise.

The Mayor was yoo hooing with Banjo Joe when last seen at the Old Ballyard, everything is on fine.
The Pitts must be close to 40 shootings this year, and the year is only half over. So much for Tyers’ get tough on crime approach. Bianchi must be laughing now. It’s never been this bad. Taxes Tyer owns the problem now and guess what, 10 more cops doing a bunch of nuttin aint gonna make a bit of difference, except in your tax bill.
What is the point of “tearing up the street” for the 4th year in a row? All of this construction is making people give up on North Street for good. It’s a never ending construction project. It will look nice maybe if it’s ever finished, but nobody will be there including the shop owners. It’s so pointless. Driving down North Street is a nightmare. I avoid it like the plague as do many others I know.
How do we know that somebody knocked on the deceased man’s door before he died? Maybe he was hit by a stray bullet. There are a lot of possible scenarios, none of them good for the safety of Pittsfield residents. More than likely there will never be any follow up on this story.
They just use these projects to launder taxpayer money, it’s more discreet than simply transferring it to their personal bank accounts. The profit margin of every public project should be disclosed, and the personal assets of every contractor and politician should be audited for life, like they do with poor elderly people who get state funding for medical care
Ayyuuuppp! And this method works with schools, courthouses, parking decks, rotaries, theaters, water plants and almost anything municipal. One of the best legal scams going.
Was an arrest or a suspect identified in Last Year’s 4th of July murder and infamous shootings massacre ? Still unsolved ?
A serial killer,a vigilante where is our crime mayor who said crime was no.1….Is the mayor on vacation
Hotel on North Management told staff to make no mention of trouble or violence …….. Close your eyes and tap your toes………..shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! I don’t see Hotel on North making it at all long term. Not in a hell’s chance.
With your hotel running acumen, you are confident.
Yeah Shankes, about as sharp as your observational and commentary skills. Spagirl, you go!
I don’t run a hotel, I do work for government. I would not make suggestions on how to run a hotel, because it is not my expertise.
I’m sure most of the people on here will be quite happy when The Hotel goes under in years to come. You seem to root for Pittsfield’s venture’s to fail.
Progressives root for the Berkshire Mall and Walmart to fail all the time.
Spa, City’s headed into bankruptcy with no end in sight,. State funding is dwindling so the social services will be the target for funding before the abyss sets in. Don’t worry, 100 N will be useable. just don’t know who the clowns that thought of it’s location as anything but a problem?
Is there going to be a FREE TAX DAY in August or not??? Heard the state was too overspent and budget busted to have one.
No Free Tax day this year. I just heard it today. The state is broke and needs the money.
Remember that big floodlight in the Center of North St. A few years ago? That was another nightmare. The same joker that brought the Arts and Streetscape is behind the Wal-Mart push.
Against Wal-Mart. Jobs aren’t sustainable. Mayor is wrong on this one. Because PEDA has failed and the spendthrift Mayor and City Council need revenue is not a reason to oblige Wal-Mart. The City needs to develope good paying wages at this particular site, not adding and subtracting Big Box Stores.Do the Store somewhere else.
When is this going to happen Dilly? Its been 20 yrs and nothing! Give it up, at least the site will get cleaned up.
My wife and I avoid North St at all costs. I do go to Carr Hardware because they are the best and deserve our support!
Maybe Berkshire Bank can have a promotion giving anyone who opens a new account a Sig Sauer Gun. They are one of six banks that loaned 178 million to the gun company in December 2015. You can read about it here, but not in the Eagle.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/letitia-james-urges-banks-cut-ties-gun-manufacturer-article-1.2676605
oh now its the banks that are the problem? loaning money is something that should be punished? its the drug dealing population that has migrated here from NYC and springfield and have gotten away with small time crime by not being punished sternly enough that has lead us to where we are. Not the police, not the mayors, but the judges. put them away every time and maybe they will move somewhere else. or possibly stop. Blaming the Banks or the gun manufacturers is just plain wrong in my opinion. I realize everyone has an opinion and I can respect that without making it personal, hopefully everyone can and with open discussion we can find a plan to improve.
I am not blaming the banks and agree 100% with what you wrote.
I also support the right to own a gun. I was just pointing out a story that won’t appear in the BB because the Best Bank in the Berkshires could lose some customers who oppose guns and the BB could lose some ad revenue over it. I would think customers who oppose guns would want to know.
Thanks for the info….I’ll be moving money to an acct in Berkshire Bank as I think they made a wise loan.
Pothole, I’m with you! Our judges are a joke. They don’t even seem to enforce the mandatory1yr gun law. I don’t get it.
The District Attorney’s office has a say about enforcing the gun laws.Go to the website and look at the press releases. There will be a couple that say the firearm charges were dropped at the request of the Commonwealth.
The D.A. was yakking it up tonight at BCC with Richie Neal, the two mayors (Pitts and NA), sheriff, police chief and Brien staff heating the air with lots of talk about heroin addiction.
I’m sick of this type of public show only done to make it look like theyre “doing something.” Only one person can kick H that’s the user himself or herself. It’s a decision, you decide to take or avoid. No more govt “programs” will do a damn thing.
Maybe the judges are just a bunch of big scaredy-cats. They don’t want someone knocking at their door with a gun. Throw the thugs in jail for a very long time. And band them from ever coming back to Pittsfield, or off the jail they go, just for showing up in town.
Mayor- Council don’t be talking about innovation when you essentially give in and give up . Because our, your predecessors sold us out on the consent decree, you don’t carry the torch for future destructive measures like a Wal-Mart on that property. Isn’t appointing Your friends akin to a Civic Authority as far as the direction of the Property.
True. Wal Mart said in Berk Courier (not Eagle) that just to get teh land clean from GE mess will cost $12 million!!! Thats where they screwed us. No mfg. company in their right mind would come to PEDA site.
Speaking of skyrocketing taxes for pay raises and perks is there going to be any road repair this year? Lots and lots of shitty roads in Pittsfield. At least we have traffic lights everywhere to slow the people down so that they don’t bounce too high.
I know infrastructure has not been a priority for the last 20 years but to visitors it kind of looks like the city fathers and mothers just don’t care.
( And maybe they don’t as long as are cashing their own big pay checks.)
Unfortunately, this is incredibly naïve. Pittsfield has had a severe drug and crime problem since the early 90s. Our judicial system county has locked up countless criminals, with punishments ranging from light to excessive (45 years for David Baxter?) People have short memories. This kind of stuff has been happening for years….
And even though the police and DA wanted to push the whole “gang” thing back then, those guys really were just groups of friends/associates.

Pittsdfield is sitting on a Multi- Billion Dollarr Business opportunity right in front of it’s Nose, and haven’t heard a mention of it. Are our Leaders that stupid?
What would that be? A new CSI Pittsfield TV franchise?
Are you people seriuos, we have a Multi Billion dollar opportunity, you really don’t see it? Charles T. do you see it.
Any chemical engineer worth his salt should be able to turn PCB contaminated soil into fuel for the city vehicles. Jesus, if you cut me some slack on my taxes and buy me a Bunsen burner and a few beakers I will do it myself.
Let’s just hope the executives’ in charge aren’t already aware of it, that would be a crime.
Are u going to tell us? Or do we need the PLANET to ask? U sound serious.
If the Planet asks you will be told. I can even give figures and stats why this is a Golden Opportunity. This would put Pittsdield back on the Map of Greatness. My reputation on the Planet is at stake and it is not a fly by night opinion. It would and has to happen. The benefits are 100 percent. I am so confident and exited about this, wait until the City Fathers hear the idea. Right now, I am very curious to see if anyone can guess, so I hope Planet won’t ask right away. I might try to set up a private meeting with the Mayor and see what her take on it is? And might not.
But, is it an economic engine? Does it come with kickbacks built into the bidding process? Is there room for plenty of nepotismal hiring? Will the employees get an 20/80% insurance split? Will the employees get the summer off?
Can you give us a vowel please?
Miss Vito, you sound childish, ” woo I’m not telling”. Give me a break.
Ha ha Pauly.
Paul and Vito you’re off topic and warned!

I want to buy a gallon of milk and want to know if its safe to go to elm street….are they still sleeping…i do want to guess but afraid to go out..seems nice out….where is the safest variety store
When Dennis Guyer finds out toni stracuzzi makes 30k more than he does lining a field he will go nuts
Guyer hasn’t figured out where the bathrooms in city hall are
Little league and Baby Ruth do it themselves.
Guyer has millions in work orders if Tyer will send it his way.
Mr. Stracuzzi…..At some point he had to work hard to get where he is today, no?
No
Trump absolutely has tapped into extreme hate in winning the popular vote…I wish the republians would unite for jobs and I will join them.Democrats for jobs.
the Mayor will be interview on channel 16 at 11 p.m .PCTV. the great Bill Sturgeon will be prompting accolades for sure.
Bill will ask 4 questions and he will answer them all beautifully .He will tell her about critics and something great about new high school and Walmart on east street over the bridge
When will they name the PEDA site Gerry Pyle-Tom Hicks Field…
Totally agree with Mike’s idea, if it ends up going through. I think the council should make it a deal breaker. Sure wish Mike was still a member.
I would also have them sign an agreement, as unbreakable as the consent decree, stating that they will never seek a tax break and that all of the other development they speak of will be completed before they get an occupancy permit. We need to show some spine here and be in the driver seat for once. I’m sick of all the business’ threatening to leave without TIFs etc. Wally wants that site badly or they wouldn’t keep coming back to it. We should use that to our advantage for once!
But before I could say yes or no, I’d like to hear exactly how they intent to remediate the site. My guess is that they will bury the slabs and cap the entire site, just like hill 78 and Silver Lake.
Leaving PCBs in place is not acceptable. They must remove them, so the land can be repurposed when they eventually leave. Has anyone seen exactly what they say they will do? Maybe the board of health can bless it at the same time they allow Wally to sell cigs? Isn’t it crazy that a little mom and pop store with maybe 50-100 sales per day loses their license, yet a massive commercial complex that will sell thousands of cartons at discounts, will be allowed to become the tobacco king of the PITTS? Nice plan.
Speaking of plans, could the PEDA folks provide us with a map of all the other wonderful building sites? My recollection is that many of the buildings along East St. we’re simply knocked down and buried or covered. The terrain there does not look development friendly.
