CAROUSEL OPENING WAS AN A+, AN EXEMPLAR, AND AN OBJECT LESSON

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

First of Two Parts

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, TUESDAY, JULY 5, 2016) — With the great grand opening of the Berkshire Carousel over the holiday weekend, with even the weather pulling an A+, the city got to see the difference one person with a positive vision can make. Jim Shulman had a dream of doing something for citizens that would be whimsical, fun, and combine craftsmanship with civic responsibility, the latter of which included funding this venture privately.

Rather than hit up the public till, which is the Standard Operating Procedure of fore flushers coming to Pittsfield with the title “developer,” The Shulmans dipped deep into their nest egg to give this spectacular attraction to the city, ironically, on the spot where a new stadium was once proposed. You remember that debacle.

There was no question the city was ripe for a new ballpark, one that would have attracted Single A and even Double A ball. In 1997, Pittsfield commissioned a study on where best to put a ballpark. About 10 locations were cited, including one of the best options: next door to Wahconah Park. The study did not recommend the parcel at Center and West streets, where the carousel spins. Nonetheless, by 2000, The Suits had commandeered the project. That was the beginning of the end. All of a sudden, this worthy venture turned into a political grab under a mechanism for dictatorial control called the Civic Authority — a municipal board with sweeping powers, with the majority of seats mayoral appointees. No recipe for disaster there.

For once, the citizens said no. Despite desperate odds, We The People forced a referendum and won.  The Suits never intended to build a stadium. Instead, playing the most cynical brand of politics, they used the stadium as a Trojan Horse. The trick didn’t work. It was the most recent and perhaps final time citizens asserted themselves, wielding power they taken from its unlawful owners.

One might argue the city is in no better shape now, these 17 years later. The FY2000 budget totaled $86,701,771. It has more than doubled since, despite a falling population, a shrinking tax base, and a reduction in quality of life. One reality has become apparent over those 17 years: The current policy regardless of which political machine obtains office is to steal all the public money they can, because they know the end is near.

With austerity will come no more 18% pay raises, no more make-work jobs at exorbitant salaries, no more “favors” for one’s chums and buds. Until the gravy train rusts to a halt, however, you can bet on more outlandish municipal budgets that will continue with unwarranted pay and benefit hikes. The record budget just proposed and approved for FY17 is not a sign of The Suits’ belief in the future of Pittsfield but a confirmation of their intention to grab all they can before the death watch begins.

All of which, like a carousel and Finnegan’s Wake, brings us back to the beginning. Jim Shulman stepped up to the plate for the city he loves. The effort has received mounds of praise and also some criticism in a ratio THE PLANET would estimate as 9-to-1. Here on THE PLANET, while most of our correspondents thanked the Shulmans, a few went the other way. It prompted Jim to contact THE PLANET to “set the record straight.”

THE PLANET will present Jim’s response in tomorrow’s column. Meanwhile, downtown Pittsfield has a gem. It’s not a game changer but a symbol of hope, an exemplar of what citizens can do if they bypass political corruption and take positive action.

We can only bypass political corruption if we keep government small enough. Progressives know what they are doing by demanding big government. Big government is harder to keep in check because of its sheer massive size. Corruption is nearly impossible to stop with big government. If government becomes too big, the people will not get control back easily because too many will benefit from the corruption and will vote to keep it going. We are seeing some of that right now here in Pittsfield and it will only get worse.

I can remember when the republican party was a fiscally responsible party slow to spend on new programs. Then it became a party where rich and powerful people and corporations refused to support the government passing many new laws avoiding this while others who not so lucky stayed in thst party

I can remember when the republican party was a fiscally responsible party slow to spend on new programs. Then it became a party where rich and powerful people and corporations refused to support the government passing many new laws avoiding this while others who not so lucky stayed in that party as they rallied to social issues..in fear of guns, gays, unions, lawyers and of course the most evil group public education and teacher unions……I could not be supportive of a Rush Limbaugh inspired party platform.I would have voted for John Kasich but you can see where he fits in that party

after the first place men’s and women’s – does any other place count? After all – everyone had the same view if they didn’t win.

Dan posts the news we should be getting from the mainstream media – but they seem incapable of reporting. Competing with the BB seems like it’s akin to shooting fish in a barrel.

The Eagle has had some outfit out of Danvers Ma. calling people to see if they want to subscribe to their , their newspaper? They have called at least 9 times and before I can say “not interested” they hang up on me. So I guess if their robot system gets an answer elsewhere they hang up on everyone else and call another bunch later. Pretty irritating but that’s the Eagle I know.

Same silly excuse for a newspaper and possibly, if it is indeed possible, worse than before. I will read a free copy at Starbucks or if someone leaves one around but not paying a dime for it. Anjd if you happen to find you are reading a week old edition… no problem. You have not missed a thing.

Pittsfield politics is totally corrupt! I agree with Dan Valenti on that point. The Good Old Boys control the system and do not tolerate dissenting or alternative viewpoints. Sara Hathaway is the perfect example of this. She took on the G.O.B. political machine and won one term as Mayor of Pittsfield. The G.O.B.’s ousted her and went onto sink Pittsfield into the proverbial ditch.

G E left, Pittsfield as we knew it left. The people that are hanging by a thread don’t and won’t support the ARts, especially when iT’s shoved down their throats.

The Mayor now lives in a Gated Community, do you think the average taxpayer needs an upgrade also.

I keep reading the Mayor now lives in a gated community but if you go up on Mass Land Records there is nothing there but where she lives now.

That’s just the point Rocco. Progressives have prevented people from “getting a life” with their intrusive policies that invade every area of our lives from creating a city that is poverty ridden to their anti-business attitude. From telling us who we have to share our bathrooms and showers with and force feeding us their climate change nonsense and creating a legal system that has two sets of rules…..one for people like the Clintons and other powerful Democrats and one for the rest of us who will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for a similar crime.

If Pittsfield schools are so good, why are 6 busses at Egremont school taking students home today July 5? Is it summer school or day camp?

She stated in her ads leading up to election day last year that she would “stabilize taxes”. But, she didn’t say at what level she would stabilize them.

The most amazing part of this column was the mention of the Fy 2000 budget of $86 million. Were now way past $150 million. Compare that to jobs (few) salaries (low) and taxes (high) and you see the problem right there in a nutshell.

I belive Dr. Trzinka (spelling??) called it, if the city did not reel in spending, it would set up the inevitable.
