PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

PROGRAM NOTE: Tune in to PLANET VALENTI TELEVISION as we spend the hour with Mayor Linda Tyer and her director of administrative services, Roberta McCulloch-Dews. Join THE PLANET and Supercitizen Terry Kinnas for all the fun beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday night, Dec. 15, on PCTV Channel 16, Time Warner Cable

——– 000 ——–

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY DEC. 12, 2016) — You can put an unwashed bum in a tuxedo, but he’s still going to reek. Similarly, you can clean up the look of a newspaper, but unless the content changes, it’s still going to read like a joke.

Welcome to the new, spiffed-up, newspaper once known as The Berkshire Eagle.

As THE PLANET has pointed out, The Boring Broadsheet is to investigative journalism what tee-ball is to hardball. Its readers — actually, its former readers, who now vastly outnumber their syllabic brethren — know this best of all, particularly as it pertains to the “see, hear, and speak no evil” local coverage. The BB might tell you of a near-fatal fire or shooting, but they leave out the vital details — left to remain hidden, unless THE PLANET finds time from a busy schedule to bother plying our sources.

Today’s continuation of Journalism 101 concerns the “telegraph” coverage, as national and international news is known as in the newspaper business. The BB suffers from a hallucinatory, liberal bias that not only embarrasses the flag and masthead but approaches the irrational. The prime example of this preposterous position is The BB’s post-election coverage of president-elect Donald Trump.

The paper obviously can’t handle Trump’s brilliant and decisive win. Instead of provided measured and complete coverage of the presidential transition, it searches the wires for the kinds of “Peter Pan” stories about Trump that have become commonplace in the wake of Nov. 8. These are stories that convey the belief that if one wishes hard enough, maybe Trump’s triumph will go away. It’s the newspaper equivalent of putting fingers in one’s ear and loudly singing “la la la la, na, na, na, na.”

Blaring the False Impression

The latest example of The BB’s amateurish coverage of Trump can be found above the fold on page 1 of the Saturday, Dec. 10, edition. The headlines blared the false impression that the CIA had declared that Russia had hacked the Democrats during the presidential campaign for the purposes of rigging the election against Hillary Clinton.

Right. And the National Enquirer space alien has been spotted selling shelled clams from an oxcart on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The CIA “report” that Moscow was working for a Trump win boils down to the opinion of an unnamed “senior U.S. official” — a report the CIA refuses to make public. In other words, it’s one of them “trust us” reports without portfolio. Come on, Alan English, new publisher of The BB. You’d better hold your editors to a much higher standard than that if you wish to stem the precipitous fall of your plunging circulation.

As Trump’s transition team pointed out in response, the report came from the same bad actors in the CIA who “said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.” These were people who, like The BB, were still fuming that their gal lost the election to a consummate showman.

Of course, the denatured Democrats called for an investigation.

The ‘Deep Dive’

The out-going Barack Obama, still clutching on to the presidential pillar with his scratching fingernails, called for a “full-scale review” of cyberattacks conducted during the campaign. He further directed that the review be concluded before he mercifully leaves office. This is the president, remember, who pledged to end America’s disastrous, $7 trillion-and-counting involvement in Afghanistan (16 years of war and counting), Iraq (13 years of war and counting), and environs.

Obama said the investigation will be a “deep dive” into the facts — you know, the kind of “deep dive” Hillary took as Secretary of State when she shook down foreign leaders for millions on behalf of the saintly Clinton Foundation.

THE PLANET wonders if Obama’s “deep dive” will include the information contained in the hacks of the Democratic National Committee, where the Wasserman bitch worked on behalf of Hillary to sink the wildfire campaign of Bernie Sanders.

We should also not forget what has happened to relations between Washington and Moscow in the eight years of the Obama presidency. The two countries went from cooperating allies to the brink of nuclear war. At least Trump has promised warmer relations with Russia, a country led by the best politician on the planet, if not THE PLANET. We speak of Vladimir Putin. We speak of Donald Trump, who, by the way, just announced he’s going to bring back “Merry Christmas” in favor of this “Happy Holiday” crap.

Hillary Clinton won the second highest total of the popular vote, while Barack Obama won the highest total of the popular vote. But the popular vote is meaningless when electing a U.S. President. The U.S. Constitution ensures that the winner of a presidential election is decided by the Electoral College. Donald Trump won the Electoral College vote without any doubt. The Russian government is pro-Trump because Putin is pro-business. Putin wants the Russian economy to grow and become strong after the Collapse of the Soviet Union over a generation ago. Putin is looking to the East more than the West in its big business investments.
I believe that Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist similar to Putin. Donald Trump will shutter Freedom of the Press with new libel laws. If we can stop Trump’s power grabs, I believe he will be a one term president.

The definition of freedom of the press is “the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship by the government.” Censorship meaning to remove any part of the information that doesn’t make whoever is in power look good. If our media has a bias toward one political party can they really even be called a free press?

Fox news does not censor. But it does spin in ever widening circles. Steven Speilberg would be proud of their creativity.

Try watching CNN, MSNBC, or NPR and you will hear serious spin much of which does border on censorship. As for the BB, censorship of local and national news happens at that paper all the time. They send a strong message by what they refuse to print.

I prefer Fox to their competitors. Their range of stories are broader. Their programs such as O’Reilly frequently include Democratic Party voices. So, where does the claim that Fox is biased and ‘creative’ find merit? Is it from distrust of conmercial media alone or a specific story?

Hillary Clinton also based her campaign on Electoral votes. Her challenge to the Transfer of Power is not based on the nonsense of popularity, largely due to marrginal voters of Calufornia and New York City, but on lost electoral votes of three states she feels that she is entitled to claim.

The Michigan Court told her, or Jill if you prefer, to stuff it. I hear a District Judge thinking the same in Pennsylvania.

Dan, why do you oppose the Electoral College when it clearly gives weight to vital yet sparser states!

Longer explanation is that she was not an ‘aggrieved ‘ party. That means that there was no cause for a recount in that State. Therefore, Jill Stein or Hillary was tossed out of Michigan’s jurisdiction with no return ticket.

With 2 Michigan Supreme Court Justices on Trump’s list for US SC and federal judgeships, there is considerable grandstanding. Funny, people that don’t understand how the law works scream about legislating from the bench until it benefits them.

The court interpreted what an aggrieved party was under the legislation. While I have not read the opinion, the issue is vague language in the legislation… a frequent issue in the Water/Winter Wonderland. I believe that the legislature will move to clarify what an aggrieved party means …. and that responsibility lies with them, not the courts.

Jill Stein could not persuade two courts in Michigan that she was aggrieved, thus her suit was frivolous. Judges don’t appreciate frivolous suits. Now, the PA judge stated he could find at least six reasons why her suit there was frivolous. In particular, he was unhappy that an entire state stood to be disenfranchised due to ‘prejudicial timing’, that is, sitting on their rights for four weeks and then demanding a hand recount/electronic audit to take place 48 hours before the certification deadline.

The two questionable judges in MI recused themselves. Conventionally, recounts occur when the margin was so slim that error could affect the call. With no evidence of tampering, broad margins, and limited focus to three states projected as Clinton Territory, the Courts are saying Stein is grandstanding. They have shown her the door. She should use it, but most likely she will opt for the window.

If you read the opinion, which you clearly did not, Judge Diamond was peeved that the requested injunction had no bearing because either the recount/canvass requests were incomplete or inadequate under Pennsylvania law.

He declined to intervene in Pennsylvania’s handling of the process with an injunction. Stein by her own admission never wanted the votes changed, so withholding them from the electoral college with the injunction was not something the Federal judge wanted.

Two thoughts:

1. If I gave money to the recount effort I would be pissed that it was shoddy and failed.

2. The whole ordeal shines a light on how corruptible our election system is. The provisions to challenge votes after canvass or even produce paper ballots are sketchy. NOT GOOD VERY BAD

Levitan

The judgement wad not merely technical faults for the judge. He detected manipulation and “irrational” theories.

“Dr. Stein has repeatedly stated that she has sought a Pennsylvania recount to ensure that every vote counts. Granting her later than last minute request for relief, however, could well ensure that no Pennsylvania vote counts.

Such a result would be both outrageous and completely unnecessary; as I have found, suspicion of a “hacked” Pennsylvania election borders on the irrational. Finally, Plaintiffs’ claims for relief suffer from several flaws, each fatal to their Motion. For all these reasons, I will deny that Motion.”

I saw in the Eagle yesterday or the day before, a “pledge” by a San Francisco City Councilor or Board Member, that SF will remain a sanctuary city, despite what President-elect Trump decides. They are hoping other cities jump aboard this “pledge” non-sense.

Two things strike me about this. (1) I fully agree with Trump, that if cities are going to violate federal law in regards to immigration (by being a sanctuary city), then don’t count on federal money/grants to aid in that cities expenditures. In my opinion, if these sanctuary cities have that much extra money in the coffers to be able to afford an illegal immigrants health care, welfare, section 8, etc, than they sure as hell don’t need the fed’s money. (2) What I don’t understand is, why don’t these illegal immigrants try to become US citizens the legal way? Has America become that lazy as a country, that we’re OK with people who violate the law, not only by entering this great country illegally, but who make no effort to become US citizens, just remain here ILLEGALLY and we are suppose to give them: in-state tuition, public assistance, free health care, etc?

We offer that to people who are here illegally, but yet, US serviceman or servicewoman who lost a limb or two in the middle east, are expected to wait for days, if not weeks, at a VA to receive medical treatment? We dump all over our veterans who not only volunteered to serve this great country, but yet we’re expected to roll out the red carpet for those who ignored our laws? Not only the illegal aliens, but our elected officials who expect the shrinking middle class to foot this “sanctuary city” bill?

I know someone who came to this country from Europe 25 years ago legally. Paying for a college education. Married, with children. Works full time. This past year this person had to go to Boston for an immigration appointment. Do these illegal immigrants have any hearings? Why do it legally if the government will always be involved in your life. Seems like there is a double standard.

You do not grasp what a ‘sanctuary city’. Your opinion is based on ignorance. Generally, a city has zero to do with any sort of social support program and certainly would not be the one to administer welfare- welfare and other benefit programs are almost 100% administered by states.

A sanctuary city is a city in the United States or Canada that has adopted a policy of protecting undocumented immigrants by not prosecuting them solely for violating federal immigration laws in the country in which they are now living illegally. Such a policy can be set out expressly in a law (de jure) or observed only in practice (de facto). The term applies generally to cities that do not use municipal funds or resources to enforce national immigration laws, and usually forbid police or municipal employees to inquire about a person’s immigration status. The designation has no precise legal meaning.[1]

Kate Dempsey
Kate Dempsey
Reply to  Shakes His Head

Torch,
Your understanding of “sanctuary city” is of your own ignorance. So answer these questions genius, (1) when an illegal alien gets severely sick and requires long-term hospitalization, who foots the bill? (2) when a legal US citizen wants to attend a college the next state over, why do they have to pay out of state tuition, but an illegal alien pays in state tuition, (3) when an illegal alien goes to that city to apply for government assistance, why shouldn’t municipal employees inquire about their citizenship? (4) why shouldn’t police inquire about a person’s citizenship when they have no valid US identification?

Not to mention, these cities are breaking federal law. So like I said in my first post, if these “sanctuary cities” don’t want to follow federal law, than don’t expect the feds to pony up federal funds. It’s the same principal as the feds used against Vermont twenty-something years ago when they refused to raise the drinking age to 21. Don’t want to play ball with the feds, than the state/city will receive no federal monies.

Where in Pittsfield city hall does one apply for local government assistance? You miss my point entirely…. in generwL cities do not administer welfare. States and the federal governement administer these programs.

The drinking ages was specific to highway fund redistribution.

There is no Federal Law that says local police departments are responsible for enforcing immigration policy.

I’m totally against a needle exchange program. Every junkie in the county will be lining up for free needles, and hanging out in our city. I don’t want to pay for it. We don’t need the crime that goes along with drug addicts, either.

Think of it this way.
Junkies area going to use regardless. If they have access to clean needles and are avoiding diseases it’s really a savings in the long run because they’re not getting sick and ending up in the hospital where we’ll have to front an even higher bill.

Or let them share dirty needles and get HIV and Hep. The costs for those meds are insane. Way more than the cost of a few needles. ($5 and change vs 10s of thousands of dollars).

They do have access to clean needles…at the pharmacy for about 25 cents a piece. It’s not just the price of needles it’s the nurse who passes them out and don’t forget the counselors, rent and on and on. This plan will cost taxpayer….enough is enough!

Boy George

As I said, they’re 5 dollars a pack, and if someone can’t pay that and needs a fix a dirty needle isn’t going to stop them.
I guess the part I mentioned about that actual cost savings in the long run went over your head?
Also, the nurse passing them out? Really?

So the nurse that’s passing out the antiviral meds when they’ve got Hep or AIDs isn’t a cost either?

Your argument is stupid.

If you’re going to not give junkies a clean needle, why don’t we just stop giving the elderly medications. They’ll end up in the hospital at some point and your taxes will pay for that stay as well.

Just take them off all of the meds they’re on and let em die at home. You know, to save your taxes.

How does the needle program work? They get needles and do the drugs at the needle distribution? Or do they get needles and do it under a bridge?
Hope this is a stupid question, because the option here is really stupid.

Good point. Perhaps instead of just being given needles the pharmacy should also inject the drug of choice. This may prevent some over doses as the pharmacist could monitor the dosage. i know I would feel better if my drug abusing loved one was being monitored by a professional.

Shakes,
You never answered my original question from a few weeks ago. So I’ll ask it again, How many of the Syrian refugees are you going to allow to rent some space in your basement, provided you ask your parents first? Who knows, maybe that can use some section 8 money to help pay your $200 rent to your parents and you will be able to afford to return to the Dungeons and Dragons Tournament again.

Wishful thinking, or in your case Shakes, hopeful.

Actually, my community held a forum a few days ago where elected officials came together and discussed some of the challenges faced by incoming refugees. 25 Syrian families settled here this year. We respect each other and are not afraid of people that are not white or Christian. While we do not call ourselves a sanctuary city, we include everyone we can.

PS You might not be a lonely person if you weren’t so filled with hate.

You know, the ones who can’t be bothered to clear the snow off their windshields thereby endangering everyone else on the road. And there was one pick up truck with his lights off and a cabulance sliding all over because he had summer tires on. I also saw at least six cars parked on the road that the plows had to go around.

Good call on closing the schools. Too many idiots out there. I was the only one obeying all the rules…as usual.

And when the weather is clear the traffic lights at every stop causes calamity. I like the one where the pedestrian hits the walk button and goes across before it reads go and you sit and wait, and wait. Actually have seen some punks walk by and hit the walk button just for the hell of it.

Speeding in the City could be lucrative if or revenue if it was enforced.

no, traffic enforcement is a losing proposition. just look at the 6-figure police officer salaries that are from all of the extra courts. Not to mention that penalties are uniform statewide. The Commonwealth takes it’s cut, the courts take their cut, then the taxpayer is forced to cover the salaries+fringe. Not to mention, courts would throw out enforcement if it was just a revenue mill.

I think the reason you don’t know about why they don’t write more MV violations is that you don’t understand how government works.

traffic control devices do not exist to make communities money. they exist to keep the motoring public safe.

you can write all the tickets you want, the community will not meaningfully increase revenue.

SHH, wrong. First of all, few traffic citations are challenged in court. And when they are, they go to the court magistrate first with one rep from the police there for all the challenges that day. So I think your assertion that traffic citations lose money is inaccurate.
Less traffic citations also lead to more accidents and even deaths which involve the police even more at an even greater cost to the taxpayer.
So what do you propose, that we just let traffic violations get off scott free and it doesn’t matter how many accidents are caused and deaths occur? You make no sense.

Shakes His Head

By the time you agglomerate all the costs involved of processing the fine, accounting for the money, operating the court, paying the traffic division that racks up considerable costs, depreciating the equipment, heating the buildings, etc, revenue from the fine is insignificant.

And no, I did not say to never issue tickets. you just made up what you wanted to argue about.

Your point about enforcement as an effective countermeasure is more pertinent, however, there is a distinction between monetary benefit to the public at large and revenue to municipalities.

The CIA and FBI concluded that the Russians hacked the Democratic National Committee. Whether this is due to targeting Clinton to benefit Trump or due to not being able to hack the Republican National Committee remains to be seen. The BB was just reporting what the NYTimes and others reported. It is a non-sequitur to argue that “these are the same guys who got weapons of mass destruction wrong”. First they are not the same guys. (The senior people are different if not the staff). Second, of what relevance is this fact? Are you arguing that because the CIA got something wrong in its history it will get everything wrong?

Mr. Valenti,
It’s not just the BB that exists in an alternative Universe (hard alt-Left at that).
David Scribner, a former BB editor fired years ago for cavorting on the BB’s dime, is editor-in-chief of The Berkshire Edge, a Web-based publication catering to Great Barrington’s literati.
The Edge stridently breast beats an anti-Trump, anti-Republican drum on a continuing basis.
It’s gotten to the point where the publication’s writers feel need to include Trump-bashing in book reviews.

They both march to the beat of the same drummer, The Eagle and NYT;s http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/18/opinion/shameful-silence-on-donald-trumps-lies-about-vote-rigging.html?_r=0 Second, top Republicans must reject the ridiculous notion that a national election can be “rigged.” Voting is, by design, a decentralized process run by local elections officials of both major parties. With his irresponsible language, Mr. Trump is calling into doubt the integrity of Republican and Democratic officials everywhere. Some have pushed back, like Jon Husted, Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, who called it “wrong and engaging in irresponsible rhetoric” to throw around evidence-free allegations about vote-rigging. Representative Peter King, a Republican from New York and Trump supporter, said on Monday: “Is it legally rigged? No, it’s not. Whoever wins, wins.”

Just a heads up regarding the Shotspotter toy the city is considering. The city of Oakland, CA spends $264000 per year to maintain theirs and they are considering scrapping it because of the cost and the fact whenever there are shots fired residents call the police with the location information.

I certainly hope our city councilors look into the cost aspect of this new toy.

From iberkshire….

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Four individuals were arrested Monday night after a shooting in the Lincoln Street area.

Police say Devin Newman, 27, of Pittsfield, Derrick Saunders, 21, of Pittsfield, Terry Martizna, 26, of Lanesborough, and Justin Luis Lopez, 22, of Bronx, N.Y. were arrested on gun-related charges.

At about 9:45 Police Sgt. Nicholas DeSantis heard numerous gun shots coming from the area has his cruiser was parked near Silver Lake Boulevard. He then alerted other officers who quickly went to the area.

DeSantis then saw a vehicle speeding onto Second Street from Orchard Street, which he recognized from an earlier report of shots fired. He turned the lights to stop the vehicle and it drove to the rear of a Second Street residence. The four occupants were detained at gunpoint by DeSantis and additional officers arrived on scene.

Inside the vehicle Police found two handguns and the four were arrested. A search of a section of Orchard Street found 11 shell casing. The investigation remains under investigation.
