TYER: ‘CITY IS SAFE’ — YEAH? COMPARED TO WHAT? … LOSS OF THE CROWNE … KIOSK STUPIDITY … TRUMP SCORES ON REFUGEES

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION JAN. 27-29, 2017) — THE PLANET is still a week away from our trip to Texas, Houston for an activity involving a certain football team, but we didn’t have to travel that far for some Texas-sized hooey emanating from Shire City — you know, the muni Where All is Utopiastic!(R)

‘Safe’ Compared to What, Exactly? — A day after the latest high-speed chase, gunfire, and shooting (from cop to creep) that ended in a children’s park, a day after an armed robbery at a Tyler Street variety store located not far from a suspicious fire that cindered a heavily insured building that had been up for sale or rent, Mayor Linda Tyer went on the telly proclaiming Pittsfield is “safe.” Now you know, and THE PLANET knows, that Pittsfield is almost as safe as Beirut. Safe? The Lovely Linda doesn’t and couldn’t believe that which she proved with a slip of the tongue. Tyer said Pittsfield was “relatively safe.” Ouch. Presidents can hire THE PLANET for speech coaching, but the encrypted officials of Pittsfield would never think to ask. By putting the adjective “relatively” in front of a conditional noun (“safe”) she’s admitting she doesn’t believe its safe one bit. We could go all Noam Chomsky with the explanation, but we won’t. Suffice it to say that the mayor has little conception of what her words mean with respect to reality. One last observation: You know The Lovely Linda wouldn’t have been allowed to make such a false claim without challenge on PLANET VALENTI TELEVISION. There such a false statement would have turned the mayor into   eulogized toast.

Crowne Plaza Foreclosure — We got a tip this week telling us the Crowne Plaza, the superstructure that anchors the mall at South and West streets, faces foreclosure. That’s an “F” word. Foreclosure indicated the hotel owners have stopped paying back their loans. The lienholder either by law or court order has in turn forced the Crowne to sell it assets used as collateral for the borrowed money. The sale is to take place on Feb. 22. Knowing how “everything’s coming up roses,” the mayor’s office, city council, and school committee will spin this a great news for the city. The stupid asses will claim it as confirmation for their brilliant initiatives, including taxes that are driving both businesses and homeowners into, well, foreclosure.

‘Kiosk’ — Is that a Russian word for ‘Stoopit?’ — Speaking of Beautiful

Pussyhats in Beautiful Downtown Pittsfield. Yikes. Ugg Lee? Your clothes will wrinkle. Your watches will stop.

Downtown Pittsfield (BDP), ask the corner office and council how the parking kiosks are working out? Great they’ll say. Because so few people want to pay for the privilege of coming to center city and risking life, limbs, and other appendages, city officials will boast that all the freed-up parking spots make snow-removal easier. THE PLANET has investigated the first month of the stultifying kiosks. Total flop. The revenues just aren’t there. Anecdotally, you will notice that where you find the parking machines, you won’t find parked cars. The kiosks on North Street, Wendell Avenue Extension, and other high-traffic areas consistently reveal a dramatic drop in parked vehicles. Fewer cars = fewer people. Fewer people = even less foot traffic for the ghostly BDP. Conversationally, talk to downtown merchants. They hate the infernal devices.  They say business has dropped compared to last year by up to 50%. Look forward to more closings this year, especially after Tyer and the council pass another tax-happy budget. Whenever the city loses another business or store, we can say they did “the Crowne Plaza thing.”

Not Here, Baby, Not Yet — One of the best early actions of many by President Donald Trump is his order temporarily freezing federal money going to so-called “santuary cities.” These are Kumbaya-type snowflake communities who love pussyhats and unvetted anybodies … and nobodies. Trump also ordered a 30-day hold on refugee programs of the kind naively embraced by Pittsfield, which wants to accept Syrians who would otherwise be illegal. This country has a process and immigration and naturalization. Without secure borders, proper vetting, and a legal process, there won’t be a country. For his first week in office, Trump gets an A+.

With that, THE PLANET invites you to have your say. The Comment Line is now open. Have a great weekend, everybody.

Dan,

You are spot on again. 1. Mayor forgot to mention the 5 dozen or so shootings and multiple homicides during her state of city address.
2. I couldn’t believe all the emplty spots today on Wendell Ave Ext. When I parked and got out and saw the parking robots, I got i my car and drove away.
3Trump has done more for America in 7 days than Obama did in 8 years!

Well we could make lemonade out of those lemons. I say, gut the son of a bitch and turn it into a parking deck. The mayor could load it up with kiosks and proclaim it another economic engine and wouldn’t that look great on her resume when she runs for a second 4 year term.

People who want all of these refugees to come here from dangerous parts of the world should be thankful that there are people in this country with the common sense to not believe in their delusions. They have no sense of caution nor do they learn from the experiences of other countries that have taken in lots of these refugees. Donald Trump has made the right decision.

The Eagle printed the story about the lawsuit against Berkshire Bank 3-4 days AFTER the Boston Globe reported it. The Eagle never has reported that the Pesky Pole base for Fenway Park is being rebuilt at a shop in Pittsfield – not earth shattering, but some decent news – again it was in the Globe a few weeks ago. The Globe is not only tomorrow and Sunday’s Berkshire Eagle – it contains many stories never to hi the local paper. That is just odd.

If they cannot get small stories to press, why bother to print the debate about legislative pay raises? why print stories about declining quality of life in our community?

Why did they print the story about the Crowne Plaza? Most likely because they are NOT advertisers….

It’s Bush’s fault! Getting old, Obama just threw money at every problem. Doubled the National debt, pardoned more criminals than last 10 Presidents combined. Also we have the most people on assistance every in the history of our Country. He made race relations the worst in decades, negotiated with terrorists, for a deserter. Time will decide, believe he is the worst President in the modern era.

They need to cut 5 million from the school department that councilor Amuso and Yon built at the direction of Eberwien. We need one high school let’s get it done today. One high school saves the city millions.
The school administration has not budgeted money to keep schools clean. They don’t see clean school environment s as important and this begins the degradation of the investment.Nobody wants PHS because it’s a 250,000 square foot mess because the custodial staffing is slashed to 7 people cleaning this monster building. All the kids want to go to the new Taconic.PHS sped programs are in need of a complete shutdown and overhaul with new administrators…..staff bosses need to be let go.

The School Committee
The School Committee

Remember 1 thing about school buildings and budgets they cut maintenance 1st.Incompetence at the business level does not allow for clean environments in the schools.Mccandless does not see the importance of well maintained schools.Supplies to the buildings are always limited..All money saved is at the custodial level. You have 40 people cleaning 1.2 million square feet of schools. There are 6 people who will clean 250,000 square feet of your 120,000,000 million dollar Taconic and it requires 15 people.

Agree, if they want to save some money, close one of the smaller elementary schools. Also stop parking all 40+ buses at one end of the City. They could be parked in section of City where they pick up the kids. A lot of wasted fuel, time and wear and tear on busses.

It’s not the custodial staff that needs to be outsourced. They are not responsible for building maintenance, just upkeep. It works like this, or should work like this: The custodial staff sees a problem, say a leak in roof. They notify their supervisor who in turn notifies the building facility manager who then gets the building maintenance crew to access and fix the problem. All the custodial crew can do is put some pails out to catch water and keep the area dry as possible and put out caution signs. The problems of maintenance are higher up.

You created “us” when you decided to vote for progressive ideals.
You created “us” when you attacked our way of life.
You created “us” when you decided to let our government get out of control.
“You” created “us” the silent majority.

“Four Freedoms Coalition plans Park Square event to show solidarity to immigrant community”
By Patricia LeBoeuf, pleboeuf@berkshireeagle.com – The Berkshire Eagle, January 26, 2017
After less than a week in office, President Donald Trump has signed executive orders that signal a sweeping shift on national immigration policy, which he has been promising since he was on the campaign trail.

He has called for “… the immediate construction of a border wall with Mexico and aggressive efforts to find and deport unauthorized immigrants. He planned additional actions to cut back on legal immigration, including barring Syrian refugees from entering the United States,” according to a story in The New York Times.

Response has been swift.

“These orders … tear at the fabric of our communities,” said Sherwood Guernsey, a co-leader of the Four Freedoms Coalition. “Every immigrant is living in fear right now. Fear of mass deportation, fear of raids, and that is not a condition that is good for our communities.”

The coalition will hold a Stand Out for Immigrants event at Park Square at 1 p.m.

The stand out aims to show support for the local immigrant community and oppose these recent actions by the Trump Administration, Guernsey said.

“The most important thing is that we are showing [immigrants] that they’re not alone,” he said. “Such things as more walls and more detention facilities only serve to divide people. It is not what this nation is [about], and it is not what will make this nation great.”

The coalition was formed in December in response to threats to the four freedoms identified by former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941 — freedom of speech and expression, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

The group held a march and rally in downtown Pittsfield on Jan. 7 to oppose bigotry, hate and prejudice which drew a crowd of up to 2,000 people. The effort earned support from more than 150 community organizations, businesses and elected officials.

Trump signed executive orders on Wednesday to withhold federal funding from municipalities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration officials, increase the number of additional immigration officers by 10,000, immediately construct a southern border wall with Mexico, and construct facilities to detain immigrants at or near the Mexican border.

“I kept really thinking [this] wasn’t going to happen at all,” said Hilary Greene, director of the Berkshire Immigrant Center. “It was just rhetoric. But it wasn’t.”

The Berkshire Immigrant Center is one of over 150 community partners with the Four Freedoms Coalition. Although the center is not specifically participating in the event Saturday, Greene said she supports the event’s mission and is hopeful some of the center’s board members will be able to attend.

“It’s just so important that our country hears that not everybody supports what [Trump is] about,” Greene said. “If we’re silent and we condone it … that’s not what our democracy is. We need to stand up and fight for what’s right and what’s just.”

The event on Saturday is an attempt to speak out against threats to undermine these four freedoms, which emerged continuously during the election process, Guernsey said.

“Our opposition to these orders that target immigrants is not a Republican-Democrat position, it’s not a left or right position, it really is a right or wrong position,” he said.

If you go…

What: a peaceful stand out against the Trump Administration’s recent executive orders regarding Sanctuary Cities, a multi-billion dollar wall across the border with Mexico, and an expansion of immigration enforcement personnel.

When: Park Square on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees are asked to stay on the sidewalks at Park Square, located at the intersection of North, South, East and West Streets in Pittsfield. Signs are encouraged. Signposts are not allowed.

Why does every town in Berkshire County have a vote on a school building project but Pittsfield? Not to mention that it’s the largest expenditure in the history of Pittsfield. This can’t go unpunished, every person on the City Council should be voted out of office. The Mayor should be recalled, unfortunately not sure that’s in play. You answered your own question. They are towns and have town meeting forms of government. We are a city and have representative government. Our council voted 100% for the high school. Perhaps you could start recruiting for new councilors. Wards 1 thru 5 are vulnerable as is on at-large councilor. Wards 5 & 6 are locks as are 3 of the 4 at-large seats. Good luck in finding credible candidates.

And that seems to be his agenda. As president “of all the people” his priorities should be on what is good for the country as a whole. The country is fast tracing into turmoil and do not think for one minute that you are not going to get caught up in it. Praising Trump will not save you. And those who are making big money right now because stocks are up, and are loving Trump for it, will find out that money cannot overcome the problems he is causing.

The arrogant and stupid politicians in this area intend to ignore Trump’s order and will still bring in the 50 Syrian refugees to this area. They have no concern for the safety of the people who live in this area.

Stop with the nazi/hitler BULLSHIT! President Trump’s daughter Ivanka converted to Orthodox Judaism after getting together with her husband, Jared Kushner.

“When Donald opened his club in Palm Beach called Mar-a-Lago, he insisted on accepting Jews and blacks even though other clubs in Palm Beach to this day discriminate against blacks and Jews. The old guard in Palm Beach was outraged that Donald would accept blacks and Jews so that’s the real Donald Trump that I know.”

That was author Ronald Kessler in a July 2015 interview with Newsmax, talking about Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s business practices when it came to building a golf course in the Deep South.

In the 1990s, Trump was running into a problem getting his golf course approved by the local town council in Palm Beach, which was imposing restrictions on his bid.

So Trump shot back with maximum effect. As reported by the Washington Post’s Mary Jordan and Rosalind Helderman on Nov. 14, 2015: “Trump undercut his adversaries with a searing attack, claiming that local officials seemed to accept the established private clubs in town that had excluded Jews and blacks while imposing tough rules on his inclusive one.”

The Washington Post report continues, “Trump’s lawyer sent every member of the town council copies of two classic movies about discrimination: ‘A Gentleman’s Agreement,’ about a journalist who pretends to be Jewish to expose anti-Semitism, and ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ about a white couple’s reaction to their daughter bringing home a black fiancé.”

Sometimes, in judging the character of an individual, it pays to see what people actually do when nobody’s really paying attention. When it came to segregation in the South at private, all-white country clubs, it might have been in Trump’s business interests to simply look the other way. Instead, Trump did the right thing and insisted on desegregation at his golf resort.

And he won.

Soon thereafter, the local restrictions were lifted and, today, the golf course is open and remains inclusive.

It remains a point of pride for Trump, who boasted about the golf resort in a 2015 interview, “Whether they love me or not, everyone agrees the greatest and most important place in Palm Beach is Mar-a-Lago. I took this ultimate place and made it incredible and opened it, essentially, to the people of Palm Beach. The fact that I owned it made it a lot easier to get along with the Palm Beach establishment.”

At the time in 1997, then-Anti-Defamation League President Abraham Foxman praised Trump for elevating the issue of discrimination at private clubs, telling the Wall Street Journal, “He put the light on Palm Beach. Not on the beauty and the glitter, but on its seamier side of discrimination. It has an impact.” Foxman credited Trump’s move with encouraging other clubs in Palm Beach to do the same as Mar-a-Lago in opening up.

That’s the real Donald Trump. The one who dealt with a real problem to do with discrimination on race and religion in Palm Beach long before he was ever seeking public office by confronting a local planning board over its exclusive policies, determined he would do things differently.

Tyer Kroll White Amuso Tully Caccamo might be right about Walmart coming to residential Tyler Street.I’m convinced they know something we don’t know and that is they gave up on development because of what they know and we are doomed. They just don’t know how to tell us and when you feel lucky Walmart is moving 1 mile into our residential neighborhoods just 2500 feet from Elm street you know it’s over.
Can we get Walmart to build us a new police station on that property?

Not so fast on Walmart moving. If Trump adds big tariffs on goods from China Walmart is going to have to increase all its prices, which will make them less competitive. They may put a delay on new stores and may even wind up closing some. Stayed tuned.

TFB needs more money to survive all the tax increases. Too bad the rest of us can’t give ourselves a sneaky 40% increase that they also made veto proof.

Another example of progressive hypocrisy. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is saying Trump is wrong to build a wall to keep out dangerous people from coming into the country, but Zuckerberg has just turned his home into a fortress complete with a wall around the property and is even going so far as to buy all of the houses around his so he can tear them down to prevent anyone from looking into his compound.

On MassLive today there is an article entitled, “At immigrant rights ’emergency rally,’ Springfield residents voice solidarity with refugees”. This makes it sound like all of Springfield has taken to the streets in support of immigrant rights, but if you read the over 100 messages posted below the article, you will see that people are outraged about the invasion of illegal immigrants and refugees that progressives want to bring into this country.

Progressives are looking for VOTERS. Progressives know they have no support from working class America because they have done nothing but hurt this group of people with their policies. So in order to win future elections bringing dangerous people into this country to put everyone at risk is okay with them. They will use their BIG BUCKS to do what people like Zuckerberg have done to protect themselves from the dangerous people they are INTENTIONALLY bringing into this country. They don’t want immigrants to go through the process of becoming legal. That takes too long and might weed out too many people that they need in this country right now. As for refugees from dangerous parts of the world who we know cannot be properly vetted, progressives want to throw out the welcome mat and will not accept any criticism when people try to voice their concerns about looking at what has happened in Europe with the refugee influx and ISIS having promised to infiltrate the refugees with radicals. Progressives put their hands over their ears and hum a tune to drown out your concerns. THEY NEED VOTERS and to do that they need to transform the country by bringing in as many outsiders as possible.

When the 50 refugees from Syria are brought to our city (eventually), will our city leaders have actual proof of each individual’s background assuring us that they are not a danger? Only this morning on TV it was reported that Syria (a war zone)is the one country that cannot be vetted properly.

If that is true, there is no way that we can or should believe their assurances that we have nothing to fear.

Progressives know what they are doing is dangerous. They even said it at that so-called information meeting on the refugees. There is no guarantee because they can’t be properly vetted and progressives know it.

There is NO way to vet people from the Middle East who have no paperwork. Asking them to check the no box on the application which reads “Are you a terrorist?” is not a reliable way to vet these people! This is precisely the reason Trump was elected – he was the only candidate interested in protecting American citizens and our way of life. He is a true American patriot!
Now that the refugee program is on hold – shouldn’t our city government refuse these refugees? Studies show that more than 90% of them remain on public assistance up to five years after arrival in our country. If the funds are going to be cut off – guess who becomes responsible for their care? You the taxpayer!
And yet another question – should a mayor who openly defies the law of the land be subject to impeachment?

According to an article in the BB back in September 15 families will be coming here with a total of 50 people, but if anyone thinks progressives intend to stop there, they are crazy. Trump’s order should be stopping this group of people, but the Jewish agency is forging ahead with their plans to bring them here with the full support of local politicians. They said they want to assimilate them into the community. This will be a challenge in itself because their religion and culture is directly opposed to ours. Nobody mentions this inconvenient truth. They just want us to believe it will be all sunshine and good times.
