SO A 98-YEAR-OLD WALKS INTO A SUGAR SHACK IN A FOREST …

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, JUNE 28, 2017) — Something there is that doesn’t love a pipeline. In Berkshire County, that something gets personified in a rag-tag collection of well-meaning but naive environmentalists known as the Sugar Shack Alliance.

The “well-meaning” sobriquet indicates an effort that achieves the opposite of its intention. Sugar Shack’s pesty protests against Kinder Morgan’s $93 million expansion of its Connecticut pipeline through the Berkshires, though it has produced temporary work stoppages, will ultimately fail in spectacular fashion by galvanizing the majority of interests that understand the pragmatic necessity of the project.

And so it came to pass Saturday that the Shackolites showed up in sufficient numbers at the Otis State Forest to bring work on the Tennessee Pipeline to a temporary halt. Among the land- and tree-lubbers hauled off to jail could be found one France’s Crowe, she of the 98-year-old variety. At 98, of course, she’s untouchable, right? We’re all supposed to look on in wonder and little chuckles that a person this old would be arrested in the woods for illegal protesting. You should know what’s coming next.

Not THE PLANET. We cut Crowe no slack.

First, while gumming oatmeal looks impressive when you’re 98, we can top breaking the law in a forest. For instance, we personally know of a 101-year-old woman who fell in Buffalo and cracked her skull. Nothing particularly cool there, unless you consider the site of her tumble  — at a casino. The trip wasn’t her fault, and the gambling den may soon be hearing from the centenarians barristers. Incidentally, Mrs. Kocak left the joint $40 lighter from gambling losses. Now THAT you have to admire. But the old Crowe? She had no more business illegally halting a pipeline expansion that despite the drawbacks stands clearly for the public good and in its interest than did the other Yule Gibbons wannabes.

THE PLANET wonders: Was Crowe’s the chariot ride up the Otis hill by wheelchair bearers resembling Egyptian slaves worth it to her or any others among the lawbreakers? “Yes,” they will answer. The politically “well-meaning” are different than the rest of us. They have more self-importance. They excuse their behavior in a cloak of self righteousness thicker than the grease on an English Channel swimmer.

No matter how much the “well-meaning” dreamers lose themselves in idylls, wind and sun will not solve this country’s growing energy needs. Natural gas, however, can address those needs. This product burns clean. It derives from natural sources, organic if you will, to use one of marketing hot words. The burning of natural gas has the further advantage of being environmentally friendly. Moreover, it’s produced domestically from a huge, untapped, accessible supply. Harvesting more of this product keeps America energy autonomous, creates jobs, and alleviates some of the pressures of demographic and developmental growth.

The intrusion of an existing pipeline through Otis State Forest requires a modest, four-mile extension. The project endured years of federal and state review, receiving the necessary approvals, including a conclusive demonstration of necessity. The review process culminated on April 12 when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted the ultimate approval.

As the Crowe flies, all the miles and wiles of the Sugar Shack, the Pipeline Awareness Network, Sandisfield Taxpayer Opposing the Pipeline, and Berkshire Environmental Action Team will end up leagues short.

Unless you want to pretend the Northeast and the rest of the country will scale back growth, the pipeline will receive support, whether tacit or stated, and it will be built.

Yes, trees die, but so do people.

The Massachusetts State Government has not passed a state budget yet. The new fiscal year begins on Friday, July 1st. Beacon Hill is looking at a $900,000,000 budget deficit. Their bond rating was downgraded this year. I wonder what will happen to local aid?

I worked for a company and the process was so skewed you would work eight hours for twelve hours pay. So, you would go in and end up working two hours of actual work. Now you have a scenario in our schools where you will work nine months out of the year and about a eleven week vacation. The company where I worked left town, and they were good paying jobs, probably because when times got bad, layoffs came and production had to be increased, we actually had a boss that pleaded with us to increase production as we were about to be laid off, and he himself would retain his position with the Company in another State. Who got the shaft? The worker, the City and the Company, nobody wins.

Is it discriminatory or sexist that the new Berkshire County Women’s Political Caucus will not allow men to join their political organization?

Would it be O.K. if a new “Berkshire County Men’s Political Caucus” did not allow women to join their would be political organization?

What about if their was a black, white, hispanic, asian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, or “other” political group that did not allow any other ethnicities or religious groups to joining their new political organization?

Why are there still double standards in politics?

No one should be racist, sexist, or discriminatory anymore!

I think for a white man to make this complaint is tone deaf to the oppression white men have caused for eons.

Hey Dan…why do you care if it burns clean if there’s no such thing as climate change? Hell…why not burn coal and smoke cigars? The utility asked for a HUGE rate increase last year, saying it was needed because there was a supply problem, not a transport problem. This was obviously completely disingenuous as their cost to buy produst had actually decreased rather dramatically. In fact, 3 miles away in New York state taxpayers were looking at a substantial decrease in rates! Yet our Senator, who chairs the utilities regulating committee, did nothing and mouthed the party line when contacted…just as you are now. This is a money grab by a utility, plain and simple, for which we are paying with both increased rates AND loss of public resources on public lands. Did your old buddy TES get you to write this glowing paean to progress at all costs?

Please explain how building a pipeline is a money grab.
Also explain how a pipeline running through a forest no one ever goes to is a loss of public resources?

Wake up, oil is at an all time low. We are now cultivating our own supply, why do you think rates are way up with electric, someone has to make money.Less demand with foreign oil, higher rates for utilities. Wait a couple years, Natural gas with triple.

KinderMorgan has a market capitalization of $42B and owns or has an interest in almost 70,000 miles of pipelines and gas transmission lines.

I don’t think they need The Planet to help them sleep well at night, and the miniscule disruption the pipeline project is causing in the Berkshires pales in comparison to the benefits to our economy.

Trump and his conglomerate (swamp) will make billions off these type deals. Spread across the Country, the I rich insiders will reap the harvest of all he touches and the middle class will pay and the sub classes will do all the digging. he did say his wealthy Cabinet knows how to make the money, that’s why all are wealthy.

This project began years ago and is regulated through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or FERC. There are three vacant seats on the Commission, so unless Trump stops playing golf and starts doing his job by making appointments, he isn’t really involved in matters like the pipeline expansion.

A little scenerio,if Deutsche Bank gives his son in law an almost 300 million dollar loan, who do you think Trump would be beholden to? Aside,it will cost American Taxpayers over three Billion Dolars to protect Trump and Family when it is all said and done.

The Democratic party has been taken over by very wealthy people who like their $20 lattes and the obligatory plastic surgery when they start showing any signs of getting older. This is why the Democratic party is out of touch with the working middle class in the country. The wealthy did very well during the Obama administration.

Also if you have a Benz and a Rolex and get first class plane tickets, you are most definitely not middle class.

Progressives are not winning elections. This is because people no longer trust them to lead the country except in this area. No matter how bad things get here, the local media only keeps telling us all how wonderful everything is here in Berkshire County. Apparently it is wonderful for wealthy Democrats.
