‘IT’S ALL OKAY: THE PLANET’s CHRISTMAS CAROL

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS TO NEW YEAR’S DAY, 2017-18) — Let’s kiss another year goodbye. Let the kiss be welcomed and enjoyed, without a trace presumption or perfunction.  THE PLANET saw, endured, and welcomed many changes this years — privately, personally, and professionally — and each was or will ultimately prove to be a good one, for we have learned that the more things stay the same, the more they change. It works the other way around, also.

Our late, great friend, novelist Hollis Hodges — like Brooklyn Dodger first baseman Gil Hodges, a native of Indiana — used to hold court as the resident wise man at Heaton Hall in Stockbridge. THE PLANET was a regular at his sessions, one on one, old age speaking to middle. As a man who had lived through and been to war, alcoholism, divorce, estrangement from family, and more, he had seen enough ups and downs of life to last 28 lifetimes — especially the downs. He nonetheless showed a resolution not to be defeated by circumstance or wallow in failure. He successfully wrote novels with major publishers, two of them bought by Hollywood and one making it to the big screen. It wasn’t all roses in June, however.

Hodges reminded THE PLANET of Leo Tolstoy, the Russian novelist. In his 90th year, Tolstoy experienced a crises of faith. The man who had written War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and a number of other towering works that alone would have defined a stellar legacy, reflected on his life and concluded that he had done nothing. He thought he had failed. Hodges traveled down that same conceptual road, as, truly, we all must do when reckoning both with Life and with a life. The confrontation is never easy, for, along with triumphs and the oases of happiness, life contains too many mistakes, regrets, disappointments, and losses. How do we deal with them? Hodges followed Tolstoy. He wrestled with his demons.

When a person does that in resolution and determination, the demons ALWAYS lose. It makes the battle no less easy and many shy away, but it provides a large measure of lasting comfort and solace, those two twins of fulfillment and cousin of memory. Hodges emerged from the match victorious, irrespective of how he felt about it. Feelings as information are useful, but they are notoriously unreliable both as the basis of action in the present moment (which is all we ever have) or to resolve and come to terms with the past. THE PLANET must add that we never directly asked him if he had won, or if he felt he had won or lost. It didn’t matter. We knew. Hollis Hodges took up the task of living, and he lived it to the full. That’s victory.

THE PLANET shares this story with a secondary generosity in mind. We want to pass along one of Hodges’ favorite sayings, a personal mantra he would recite with the conviction of a man about to die for a cause. The gem consisted of three little words, ones we have made our own:

“It’s all okay.”

Even when it’s not okay, it is okay because time invariably proves it so. Think of the saying as a form of universal forgiveness of the kind associted with the words “God” and “mercy” and provides the basis for faith in universal and unconditional forgiveness for what we call sin. Afterlife or no, time sweeps us along and dissolves our earthly coil back into the atoms from which we derived. The recyling is certain and, at the risk of characterizing the ineffable to the point of caricature, benign. Only the form of it remains anyone’s guess.

Allow THE PLANET, then, to wish you all a Happy Christmas and the best of New Years. Friend or foe and everyone neither, both, or in between, we repeat the words that end every PLANET column: “Love to All.”

And remember, no matter what life throws at you, it’s all okay.

We shall reform here on THE PLANET after New Year’s Day. Enjoy the break but feel free to come here in the interim with your comments. Communication at this address is always a two-way affair.

LOVE TO ALL.

Happy New Year to you to Dan! And make sure you come back….Have heard a couple of B B gun shootings at homes and Businesses and even people these last few months, serious stuff, what are the authorities doing about it? Where’s the Eagle? Many years ago someone shot out a window and got jail time, couple of punks. With all the crap going around this junk should be taken very seriously. Zero tolerance.

Dan, you have a beautiful mind. Thank you for the peaceful reminder that “It’s all okay”. Similarly, “This, too, shall pass” applies to all of life’s difficulties.
Thank you for being a voice for all of us, a source of comfort that someone is keeping an eye on things. You do this freely on your own time. You are much under-appreciated.
May the coming year be light-filled and joyous for you.
Love and appreciation to you.

Valenti is quite readily and most certainly one of the finest writers in New England, and there are some good ones. The measure of a man/ women is what he / she carries on his/her shoulders. A few years ago,the Planet went into a Court room to show all here what that was all about. He has been our mouthpiece for some time now, and admit it, we love every minute of it.

A super prolonged cold spell is on the way. Quite often causes water mains to burst. Look for testy conditions later in the week. Keep your gas tank full. Make sure your battery jumper has been charged. Hope you drained that outside spigot if it is not frost-free. Keep your tongue off metal pipes and bumpers.

Suggestions for other preventive measures??

Was watching a video of how gangs are murdering people right on the beaches in Cancun Mexico. And the police and mayor are keeping it out of the news as much as possible so as not to lose tourism.

Are they copying the Pittsfield model? If it is not in the newspaper then it did not happen?

Hollis Hodges often frequented Mundy’s in Housatonic just sitting at the bar nursing a coffee. He was a great thinker and upstanding gentleman who often spoke of the Heaton Hotel in the years before it was taken down…a place of great distinction with a history all its own. He and John Costello a partner in Judge Earl Warren’s law firm presided over Lenox and Stockbridge using the estates clause to attempt to save many Guilded Age cottages from development.
Both John and Hollis are remembered by locals as members of a
breed that tried to make a difference in Southern Berkshire County.
Thanks Dan for bringing the memories of Hollis back to life.

Stockbridge main street has nothing to see.Four storefronts made famous by one mans interest in painting it once. This kind of accidental notoriety is pure luck and shows nothing about the townies except that the artist lived around the corner.

I am originally from Troy, NY, a city with a LOT of similarities to Pittsfield; so many similarities. But, in the early 70’s, when the urban renewa, craze was really in full swing, my father owned a couple of city blocks of truly dilapidated buildings. He’d spent the prior decade jumping out of bed every time he heard a fire engine at night because thebuildings were uninsureable. He jumped at the offer to sell the whole shebang to the city, for a dollar, so they could be demolished and turned into parking. One of the houses in the lot happened to be Uncle Sam Wilson’s original home. Troy’s one and only claim to fame, other than being the birthplace of the detachable shirt collar, is as the Home of Uncle Sam. They demolished it, and my Dad sold it to them!

The mediocrity of people born in the berkshires is evident everywhere you look. The economy is failing north to south for 30 tears with country courtains being the latest berkshire failure.Thank god for the out of town millions that have found Lenox as the resort town of the future and hope the continued spillover carries Lenox little sister Stockbride a few more decades…..Casinos are the future of an area that has 2 million people already here to see the sites.

What have high taxes done for Berkshire County? Not much by the sorry state of the area. Few jobs, companies and stores leaving in droves. Berkshire County might actually improve if taxes were lowered, but don’t expect local politicians to try that since Progressives are addicted to high taxation.

The approval rating for Obama after one year in office was 47%. For Trump the approval rating is 46%. Very much the same, but the liberal media goes on a tirade of Trump is the least popular president of all time.

I was also listening to 1420 news yesterday and they were talking about the extremely cold weather. At the end of that story they say that President Trump is very warm in Florida. They then mention in another story that same day that Trump has spent more time in Florida than any other president. Obama spent most of his vacation time in Hawaii, also an extremely warm place, but there was no mention of Obama’s vacation time by the liberal media when he was president. No mention of all of his golf sessions either that often happened during major crisis times in the country. One president was treated like royalty while the other is treated the worst I have ever seen. Mistakes by Obama were covered up while the liberal media goes out of its way to find flaws with Trump and reports them continually.

Hey Pat, I never know where you distill your facts from, but in his first almost year in office Trump has taken FOUR TIMES as many vacation days as Obama did over the same period. Thats 4x! There are a hundred places you can look it up. And whats even better, he takes his vacations at his own properties so makes fantastic sums of money personally on his little junkets. Corrupt and lazy..,great presidential combination!

For the Gallup numbers, check here. http://news.gallup.com/interactives/185273/presidential-job-approval-center.aspx There is even a really cool chart going all the way back to Truman. There you will see Trumps approval ratings down in the toilet trending toward Nixon’s numbers at the end.

My predictions for Pittsfield politics in 2018

* Tax increases, debt increases, and a record-setting municipal budget by July 1st

* Population loss, job loss

* Seniors choosing between heating their homes or eating food

* The Good Old Boys running the show

* Growth in the underclass, teen pregnancies, welfare caseloads

* 700 students choicing-out of Pittsfield public schools

* Tricia Farley-Bouvier running for her 5th legislative term, Smitty Pignatelli’s 9th

* The lovely Linda Tyer’s state of the city address where everything in Pittsfield is “vibrant” and “dynamic”

* Dangerous downtown Pittsfield will see shootings, drugs, poverty, gangs, prostitution

* PEDA will turn 20 years old and will be made into a textbook for economic failure

* Dan Valenti will continue to bitch and moan about Pittsfield politics

And more business will continue to pass by on moving to Pittsfield partly because they see the city does not take care of its infrastructure. When a city has crumbling roads it says a lot about its leaders.

And we really need to have a contest this winter to guess which road will become the least travel-able by April. It is December but potholes are already prolific and since we can’t do anything about them till spring look for linear moonscapes throughout the city.

The city seems to have directed its money toward projects and improvements that would benefit the few and only tossed a few bucks here and there to the roads. Now there is no road money so I wonder what the plan is or if there even is a plan.

By your theory then School Committee during the Obama years this area should have been booming with jobs. Obama and his fellow Progressives love high taxation. Berkshire County is loaded with Progressives. Why weren’t jobs booming during the Obama years? Why did companies start leaving this area during that time? Why were there so few jobs of any kind, public or private sector, that the only way to get a job is to have a friend or relative give you a job?

Alan Chartock writes a very nasty article about President Trump which the BB, of course, makes front and center in their on line site. We’ve got three more years of him unless he is impeached which he so richly deserves. This Chartock guy is unbelievable. There is NO proof of anything with Trump while Hillary’s behavior is given a pass by Chartock because she is a Democrat.

He compares Trump to a dictator when Obama famously said why wait for legislation when I have a pen and a phone, but then we know that according to Chartok, Obama is a genius. For eight long years Chartock assured us that Obama is a genius.

Obama was a genius in Chartock’s eyes even as he let Ebola patients into the country, even as he ignored all the bad behavior of Russia, even as he did nothing to protect Christians in Iraq from ISIS, even as his foreign policy was a nightmare, even as he lied about Obamacare. I expect little truth or objectivity from Chartock because his track record is so abysmal.

I don’t trust our city official’s estimate that the kiosks earned $159,365 for one year.

Do I dare say they have played games with figures in the past.

The kiosks are a failure, no surprise to most of us. Of course they would play it down. I would love to know the true amount but I strongly feel it is “much lower”.

In a politician’s mind they believe they are doing us a favor by not giving out bad new.

True. When the weather is this cold people do not love having to stand out in the freezing cold and interacting with the meters. The winter months will not be good for the meters bringing in lots of money.

12 ,I think he’s had one to many Harvey Wallbangers……I’m really worried about these people…what are they gonna do when the Inspector Generals report comes out in Jan. The Obama and Hillary people did some very very bad things.

Funny how they sent the bills out on a long Holiday weekend. Probably think that people will calm down by Tuesday. I hope not. Too bad the G man didn’t win.

Just saw Marchetti sing a Tom Jones song on channel 16. Not too bad but when Tricia Farley Bouvier threw her panties on stage I thought that was a bit much.

I saw that. But I thought what she threw on stage was an old parachute. But you are probably right.

Dan please start a discussion about the huge tax increases in Pittsfield. People I am talking to are so pissed and blind sided. Guaranteed great thread.

Raising the house appraisals so they can raise the taxes. This City is corrupt as it gets.

Remember this along with trash cans, toters, loungers, budgets, deceptive school budgets, chronyism, etc., etc,.etc, when Taxing Tyer aka Trashcan Tyer aka Lounging Linda and her RAT Pack (Raise.All. Taxes Pack) and the anointed ones come up for reelection.
