PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY AUG. 29, 2018) — News items too big to fail:

Sign of the Times — A campaign sign belonging to District Attorney Paul Caccaviello was not stolen yesterday. That sign, plus one located in Caccaviello’s basement, are the only two of his signs that have not been lifted, pilfered, or kleptoed. The sign, located on  outer West Street, has been chained to the ground. Snarling pit bulls guard its perimeter, and movie-type arc lamps illuminate the sign during the nighttime hours. A silver Dodge 1500 “Big Horn” Hemi pickup truck was seen cruising back and forth in front of the sign Tuesday night, but police attribute the sighting to “swamp gas.” They also say the driver, who police day did not appear human, can be accounted for as a result of either sunspots, earth tremors, or subterranean waters.

Keep Away from Runway Sue — For the 18th time this year, the Pittsfield Airport was closed Sunday for (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) runway “pavement” work. The airport holds the distinction of being the most paved stretch of ground on the planet. Pittsfield officials defending the constant runway work, saying the airport doesn’t actually need the work, but with an election coming up next year, it’s a “handy way to ‘take care’ of favored contractors.” Meanwhile, in other airport news, Sky King ordered his niece Penny to put on a tighter sweater so she can be ready the next time the bad guys kidnap her and tie her to a chair.

Flat Out — Andrea Harrington, candidate for Berkshire County district attorney, said that her first action as D.A. would be to join the Flat-Earth Society. “If the earth were round, people on the sides and bottom would be falling off,” Harrington said. “How would we be able to properly get tough on criminals if they keeping dropping away like that?” She said she would build a wall to keep all local criminals confined to the county. When asked how the D.A.’s office would pay for the wall, she says she has been in touch with a Nigerian prince who will give her half of the $100 million he is set to inherit after she gives him her credit card number.

Mayor’s Best Friend — A judge has ordered Mayor Linda Tyer to 60 days community service. This comes after Tyer was caught sprinkling broken glass, razor blades, and tacks along the dog runs at the city dog pound off Hubbard Avenue. Tyer said the sharp objects would be “good for the dogs.” The judge disagreed. Exclusive video of the mayor in action, filmed from a hidden camera inside a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnell’s porch, turned up on Channel 10 news, but her supporters immediately went into protective reaction. They claimed it wasn’t the mayor “deeting” the dogs but “someone who looked like the mayor.” Roberta McCullough-Dews, the mayor’s chief of staff, said the woman in the tape was not the mayor but “a miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary.” Tyer, who recently completed a novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Incompetence, recently announced she will be seeking re-election in 2019. “I want to keep Pittsfield hip and vibrant,” she said. Part of that plan, she said, would be to approve more raises for the school department while increasing taxes on seniors.

Taking a Dive — The city’s licensing board recently granted a permit for councilor Earl Persip to start a Dumpster diving business on North Street. A business certificate obtained from the city clerk’s office lists the business name as Dumber and Dumberer Dumpster Diving. During the meeting, aging board chairman Carmen Massimiano forgot who he was. Thinking he was his own father, a gold-caped Massimiano scolded himself for taking the batteries out of a flashlight and then doing strange things with the flashlight. That caused the other members to immediately approve Persip’s request. Persip says he will open his first store in the Dumpster behind Paul Rich Furniture on North Street. He says Andrea Harrington has signed up to be his first diver.

Up in Smoke — In a Commonwealth first, council president Peter Marchetti and at-large Peter White became the first politicians to completely vaporize. Puzzled investigators are stymied. “We have no rational explanation for this,” said Pittsfield police chief Mike Wynn. Chief Wynn said after the two politicians disappeared in a “hazy mist,” no animals would walk on or across that particular spot. Scientists speculated that a “total lack of substance and presence, particularly backbone,” might cause such a disappearance. Wynn said that for safety reasons, he could not disclose the location of the vaporization, but he said the disappearance was not linked to the unusual number of flashlights without batteries that could be seen strewn in the back alley between the Boy’s and Girl’s Club and the YMCA.

Battery Park — Meanwhile, Bart Raser, owner of Carr Hardware, says there has been an unaccountable run on flashlights. Raser said he’s “never seen anything like this, especially when we ask people if they want batteries for the lights. They all say no.” The mystery deepens.

Run, Rabbit, Run — The remains of the Energizer Bunny were found in an advanced state of decomposition inside the Springside House Tuesday night. Police are holding for questioning unnamed members of the Friends of the Springside House, the Pittsfield Parade Committee, a rainbow, a creeper van, two banana peels, and a dish running away with a spoon.

Trio — Eagle publisher Fred Rutberg. D.A. candidate Judith Knight. State rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier. You complete the news item, folks, because there’s nothing new there to THE PLANET.

Update on downtown.Took a Tuesday night drive downtown before school opens and guess what? The place is hopping with people everywhere and no parking to be found. The entire street was busy no matter what us negative naysayers believe.Great Barrington ,Stockbridge,Lenox are sleepy compared to Pittsfields downtown,The Common park is also now a jewel for that area. The investments keep happening there and its hopping…..Im a believer

Busy with tourists School Committee….not locals. I guess you’re happy that North Street is becoming like South County. South County is full of the wealthy tourists….remember those people you don’t like unless they’re wealthy Democrats and then they’re great. With malls dying out, which progressives are overjoyed about, turning North Street into a destination for wealthy tourists isn’t helping the low and middle income people in this area to have affordable places to shop.

You hit the nail on the head Pat. I was just on North St. and met one wealthy tourist, obviously a democrat, who asked me for a dollar. You could tell he was a tourist because he had just had a cocktail. In front of Paul Rich’s I met a lady driving an EW 36. She clearly had plenty of cash because the EW 36 is the Cadilac of mobility scooters. My biggest and probably your biggest complaint too, is the way these rich bastards let their kids hang out near the corner of Eagle St. where Rosenfeld’s Clothing Store used to be. I guess they’re waiting for the Friendly’s to open.

I have no problem with the wealthy. They earned their money in most cases, but what I do have a problem with is affordable options being ignored for people who can’t afford to shop in expensive stores. Not all stores are expensive on North Street, but a lot are especially the few clothing stores on North Street are just NOT for people without a lot of money. Turning North Street into a shopping area similar to Great Barrington Main Street or Stockbridge Main Street is ridiculous in a community this poor.

Pat, I shop North Street opposed to big box when I can because the prices are comparable, yet service is much better. Two examples are Carr’s and Jim’s. The eateries are affordable as well. Would you rather have a thriving mall outside of Pittsfield and plywood on North Street?

Carr Hardware and Jim’s Shoes are great and both have been there forever. I don’t consider them part of the over the top revival of North Street. It’s the little trendy and hip shops they are bringing in that are overpriced and definitely geared towards the well heeled crowd that are the problem. The powers that be want to bring in more of those kinds of stores which locals cannot afford to shop. They are stores likes you would see on Main Street in Northampton or in Lenox and are specifically priced for people with lots of money to burn.

You’re delusional, beside being a believer. There’d have to be stores people want to go to, and they’d have to be open on a Tuesday night, for things to be as you’re describing. I think you must be continuing Dan’s satirical writings.

Earl the Pearl has always been a facade. Him and his friends ride around like high ballers with $400 watches while hypocritically claiming they are balanced and progressive. They were always elitist jerks when they ran security for their friend who owned GEAA

He is playing both sides to keep Mini Hillary, his politically active, smith educated, progressive wife, happy. All she needs is a pant suit

Then they go hob knob with the lights to build some SWAT vehicles. It’s for the children

There is nothing wrong with wealthy people as long as the pay a fair percent of their wealth to run the business of the country.

What is a fair percentage of their wealth to pay to the government and who determines that? In a socialist society, most of the income of everyone goes to the government to do with as they please. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Just look at the horror story unfolding in Socialist Venezuela.

While Obama was content to let the U.S. economy slip away (“the jobs aren’t coming back”), President Trump has done much to remedy the situation by cutting the corporate tax rate from 38%, one of the highest in the world, to 21%. He is renegotiating trade deals, cutting aid to NATO and countries which are working against our objectives, etc. etc. You would know this if you were actively seeking out legitimate news sources. Or to summarize from Jonathan Hornbeck on fb: “We do not need a DA that has to cut her teeth on learning simple legal principals! The DA is the Chief Legal Officer of the County! She would be looking to subordinates for guidance and counsel. She does not have the experience to prosecute complex cases, if not the DA in office, then who does that??? This is so scary it’s not funny! And to think of the endorsements and backing she has from local politicians and pundits; we obviously as voters have a lot of house cleaning to be done. These “characters” want to put our safety at risk to further their agenda. This is fundamentally wrong and careless!”

So glad to see that many are are starting to see what Mr. Gaetanis has been talking about right along. He despises gobsigs and gobsig supported candidates. He has consistently stated that moon rivers Krol white Marchetti cacamo Percip and Simonelli and of course dimwit Tyer are not the people to be controlling a 165 million dollar budget. There is one individual who is dumber than all these halfwits and he has been shaking his empty head for way to long. The people of this city must realize that the present crop of clowns tuning this city can not do much more damage than they presently have done and what we all must do is to elect individuals who have the credentials to undue the damage they have done. Electing Harrington is putting another Linda Tyer. Both are loud clueless and do not have the credentials and of course are gobsig supported candidates. We have to insure in all future elections that we look at the credentials That is all that matters. You wouldn’t go to the barber shop to have a tooth filled and we shouldn’t expect to have half wits like Tyer and Harrington to do a job which requires brains and experience. It is time for all of us to recognize incompetence in govt. And excise it. You do this at the ballot box.Let’s all vote to insure that incompetence doesn’t prevail.

I just learned today that Ms Harrington has NEVER even had a case that went to Grand Jury. She did ONLY a few cases as a defending attorney and therefore has no clue nor skills to ever even consider a position such as DA. Mr. Caccaviello has successfully prosecuted murder trials which resulted in life in prison. He has been involved in all of the steps and details involving serious crimes, has the experience working with law officials on the scene of crimes, giving valuable information used to prosecute those crimes. Ms. Harrington has done none of the above mentioned. She, like Ms Tyer or is it Mrs Clairmont, would be way in over their head It would be disastrous. As for Ms. Knight, I think she has some experience, but not recently as a prosecutor. She would be more qualified than Ms Harrington, but if I were a victim of a serious crime I would only hope I would have someone with the experience that Mr. Caccaviello has. Get out and vote for the one who has the most experience and integrity. Vote Mr. Caccaviello. We already have an unqualified person running city hall. Let’s not make that mistake again.

In answer to School Committee in a previous post telling me that my problem is that too many taxes are being taken out of my paycheck. The truth is that I don’t have that many taxes taken out of my paycheck. The real problem is those hidden sneaky taxes like the meals tax which was supposed to only be temporary, but since we live in Taxachusetts, the meals tax has never gone away, but actually increased. Also skyrocketing electricity rates and now cable costs. These are the real things that drain money from our paychecks.
