WAREFARE IN THE FOREST IS NOT WANTON, UNLESS IT’S HUMANS DOING THE FIGHTING … or … WHY THERE CAN BE NO FORGIVENESS

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION AUG. 31 TO LABOR DAY, 2018) — One of The Ol’ Professor’s favorite essays to use in Comp I classes was “Warfare in the Forest is Not Wanton” by Brooks Atkinson. In it, the author describes the fury and ferocity of nature in the woodland, almost all of which humans entirely miss because it takes place out of sight or too slowly (as we measure time) to be noticed. We are too easily distracted by our own selfish pursuits, even if they are the benign kind of “communing with nature” or finding in the woods our spirituality, a la Henry David Thoreau or John Muir. Unseen beneath and on top of this human-imposed veneer is a fight for survival.

With trees, for example, the battles extend over decades, centuries even, as different varieties fight for nutrition and sunlight. The campaigns will be waged silently slowly, with the artillery mute to human hearing and movement of the kind that would make the hour hand of a clock seem rapid as roots, trunks, branches, and leaves stake their claim to life. The same goes on with plants and animals. Even the microbes know that the fight is still on.

Today we sat outside a coffeehouse, tossing pieces of a chocolate muffin to birds and pigeons. The pecking order quickly sorted itself as the Dominant P hogged the best pieces and shooed the others away. THE PLANET nonetheless made sure the little guys got theirs, assured that Dom P had no evil in him. His motives were as innocent as a the ribbon on  little girl’s doll or on my Underwood typewriter.

———- 000 ———-

Atkinson conveys in the essay and in its title the crucial fact that while nature engages in an endless struggle for survival, the battles are “not wanton,” that is, malice, hatred, jealousy, envy, avarice don’t propel them. These emotions belong to humans, who act as if we occupy a large mental hospital. How else do we explain the madness of what we have done, do, keep doing, and will do to ourselves? People in groups share the most contagious disease ever known, that of self-interested greed. Saints, holy men and women, philosophers, artists, and thinkers have since the dawn of consciousness and self-awareness offered remedies for utopia, either on  grand (Hobbes, Skinner) or interpersonal (Jesus, Buddha) scale. All ultimately fail.

Organized religion may be the most pernicious type of grouping, with its self-professed claim on “truth.” To advertise that you have The Answer has been since time began an irresistible draw to countless gullible people. Inevitably, though, religion reduces to a set of arbitrary rules propagated by a select few, usually men, to control people. Believers end up as we all do, alone — as it should be — to face our mortality.

From this we can draw the lesson of intent. Survival is the purest and most resolute form of intent possible, one that all life shares. All of nature and life except human beings show perpetuate intent. They act without ulterior motive or selfish plotting and can therefore be considered sacred, if THE PLANET may use a loaded word.  Humans have (d)evolved beyond pure intent, with self-awareness having become the culprit (what the Catholic Church calls Original Sin). Here, survival moves from contentment and self-containment into the abstract realm of intellect.

While we possess the means and ability to fashion a paradisal life for ourselves, self-conscious impulse takes a nasty turn, evil even. We humans will deliberately inflict needless pain, conflict, and suffering on ourselves, always in disguise as “the other.” You are a “this.” I am a “that.” You must therefore be less than me, not worthy, subpar, the enemy. Our divisions permeate into invisible borders, barriers, fences, sects, factions, tribes, states, nations, and all the other delimiters of hostility that divide rather than unite us. We clearly can’t handle our self-awareness. It’s rather like putting the computing power of a smart phone in the hands of a nine-year-old. Perhaps over time we will grow into the capacity of our brains and minds, but we are far from that time if it is ever to arrive at all.

———- 000 ———-

A mathematician developed an algorithm and software to study human origins, ancestry, genetics, DNA, and the works of progeny. He came up with the startling yet mundane fact that any one person on the face of the earth can be no further removed in blood relations from any other human being on earth than a 50th cousin. The same study also found that every time you inhale, you take in at least three hydrogen atoms that have already been inhaled by everyone who has ever lived — Jesus, Adolph Hitler, Julius Caesar, Sid Caesar, Jerry Mathers, Roger Kahn, Genghis Kahn. If they lived on the earth at any time in any era, you are taking them in. We ARE all one.

Consequently, we cannot and should not forgive ourselves for what we do to each other. There is no need. Such forgiveness, same as the hatred that causes its need, is wanton, too. We are a species are beyond forgiveness because there is nothing to forgive that is self-imposed. Those who can wake up to the truth can never go back to sleep, for they have found a dreamless salvation.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

Can you look at creation without seeing the Creator?
I believe that every human being is created with a God-sized hole in their heart, that only He can fill.

I agree Gigi. I also don’t think we need any organized religion to believe in God the Creator. Many people do not attend any kind of organized religious service on a regular basis or even at all for whatever reason, but they still believe in God. We don’t even need a brick and mortar building to have access to God. In the Book of Revelations the large, opulent churches are being chastised for their corruption and apathy.

Dan, PEDA and other animal lovers may be all over you for this. Chocolate is toxic to birds. You may very well have been guilty of birdicide and unless you want to be labeled The Pigeon Murderer, you should scoop up their little stiff corpses ASAP and covertly dispose of them. I’d recommend the dumpster behind Paul Rich & Sons but you may have to wait for Persip to dump some signs first.

Back in the sixties North street was aswarm with pigeons. And they crapped all over the building ledges and it dripped downs the sides. They were “dealt with” in a discreet manner and it was not just the white owls visiting from up north that did away with them.

Sadly these graceful flyers were replaced with swine, the human kind, the gang kind, the predatory kind. And apparently they are much harder to do away with than pigeons.

If there was a wildlife show portraying the violence, perversion, conspicuous consumption and self-destructive behavior of today’s “evolved” human beings, wouldn’t the perfect location to shoot be at the Cumberland Farms on 1st Street? Has anyone else noticed (rhetorical) how much of a Sodom and Gomorrah that place is? From blatant prostitution with pimps nearby to panhandling strung out heroin addicts and the lowest form of human beings this side of a hell that even Milton couldn’t imagine. Like a train wreck, it is horrific to witness yet somehow fascinating that it is reality and not someone fever induced nightmare. When I leave, I dare not look back or I may be turned into a pillar of salt.

No one is nastier or less trustworthy than this aberrant fool.Trumps poll numbers are sinking like a rock and I wouldn’t be surprised if republicans who till now have been approving lemmings will start to bail on trump so as to not be associated with him in the midterms. Things are changing very rapidly and I can’t say that I didn’t see this coming but the speed of it is breath taking. We all like the truth and facts and hopefully anyone who responds to me will use facts and the truth. Re: Berkshire Eagle endorsements all incumbents and men

Dear Editor of the Berkshire Eagle,

I read the Eagle’s recent endorsements that are for all incumbents and men. Since my dad ran for Berkshire County Commissioner in 1996, I have been interested in state and local politics in Western Massachusetts. I found that most “elections” are non-competitive and the incumbents win 99.9% of the time. Moreover, voter turnout is very low. When I read the Eagle’s endorsements of incumbent Member of Congress Richard Neal over a black, muslim woman challenger named Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, Attorney, and then the Eagle’s endorsement of Paul Caccaviello over two women challengers named Andrea Harrington and Judith Knight for Berkshire County District Attorney, and then the Eagle’s endorsement of incumbent Adam Hinds over challenger Tom Wickham for Berkshire-based State Senator, I felt it was more of the same, predictable politics by the Eagle.

I understand that I haven’t lived in my native Berkshire County since the early Spring of 2004, I have read about the issues and problems that the people of Western Massachusetts have faced over the past nearly 14.5-years.

After the 2010 U.S. Census, Western Massachusetts lost one of its Congressional seats, and Member of Congress John Olver retired in 2012. Since 2010, the Republican Party has a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, which might flip to the Democratic Party in 2018. In 2012, Richie Neal’s district included Berkshire County. Like many northeastern politicians, Neal’s base of support is financial interests, which have little to no presence in most of Western Massachusetts. Some people saw Neal’s interests in big banks and insurance companies as being disconnected to the needs of his rural district. Some people saw him as out-of-touch with his constituents. Richie Neal has shown himself to be a career politician who served decades in U.S. Congress with a multi-million dollar campaign account. In short, he is untouchable in politics!

I read that the Berkshire District Attorney’s office went after young adults involved in marijuana back in 2006, which lead Judith Knight to challenge then D.A. David Capeless both in court and in that year’s election. I also read that Pittsfield and North Adams are in the top 10 for communities with violent crime in Massachusetts. My dad worked in Pittsfield probation since late-1970, and I recently asked him if Pittsfield had such high cases of violent crime, drugs, and gangs nearly 48-years-ago. My dad, who retired in 2002, told me that he knew most of the people on probation back then, but today, the violent criminals are from out-of-town from big cities. Times have changed for insular communities. I looked at all of what happened in Berkshire County, and I saw the D.A.’s office going after teenagers with marijuana, while violent crime became a serious problem! I also read about the Bernard Baran case, where the late-D.A. Gerry Downing hid audio tape recordings that proved Baran was framed, and it wasn’t until after Downing’s death that Capeless released the exculpatory evidence. I read that now Superior Court Judge Daniel Ford and D.A. Downing – then prosecutors – used homophobia, and Downing illegally withheld evidence to ruin Baran’s life. You could make a movie out of all of corruption that went on in Berkshire County criminal justice system!

As for Berkshire-based State Senator Adam Hinds, his first vote in political office was for the legislative pay raise bill right after the Legislature received a pay raise in their base pay. Indeed, all five Berkshire delegates to Beacon Hill voted for the pay raise bill early last year, 2017. When it came time for leadership concerning the Massachusetts Attorney General’s legal case over the Berkshire Museum’s unethical selling of its most valuable and historic pieces of art, Adam Hinds was nowhere to be found! In the 2016 “election”, Adam Hinds was pre-selected and favored to be State Senator over Andrea Harrington and Rinaldo Del Gallo III, in the Democratic Primary. In short, Adam Hinds was always in bed with the Good Old Boys and the political establishment. If that is leadership, then our sky isn’t really blue during a sunny day.

In closing, the Eagle’s recent editorial endorsements of all incumbents and men perpetuates the same old problems facing politics and government in Berkshire County.

– Jonathan Melle

The G Man definitely stays on point regarding these water and sewer projects. His most recent TV show is all facts and truth. He challenged turocy to debate him at a cc meeting so that he could show the city’s residents how incompetently run the dpw department is under his reign. The G Man will only need about two minutes to dismantle him. He also invited any city official who thinks they can go one on one with him to his show. He only asks that they wear a diaper when they come as they will need it. The G Man critiqued the DA race on the show and he said if the election is about credentials and experience it should be close between Cacaviello and knight with cacaviello pulling it out. He stated that Harrington had no business even entering the race as she is not in the leaughe of the other two. Harrington is very much like tyred in that she has nearly no experience and would be as lost runing the DA office as tytr is runing the city.Dumb and Dumber. You are so wrong Art Seller. It’s the far left that has pitted American against American with their far left crazy ideas like Socialism, open borders and ICE agents are terrorists. Those are Crazy Ideas and that is what is tearing this country apart NOT President Trump. With President Trump out of the picture, do you really think that this country will come together if those crazy ideas are still on the table?!?

A hero in Vietnam and a zero in the Senate. He didn’t even have the decency to include his running mate who motivated many to come out and vote for him. Without her his vote totals would have been really embarrassing. Why didn’t he wan’t his first wife there? She was the mother of some of his children.

Bottom line is he died a zero jack wagon. So sad to see someone become such an ego maniac before he died.

If your talking about fritz, that would be,good for nuthin. Many dumb Americans to think the trillions given the the super rich won’t come with consequences is the same as a rotten tooth healing on its own.

It is not Trump’s plane. He does not own everyone and everything because he is president.

Those planes are owned by the citizens of the US. That is a FACT.
