(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY SEPT. 5, 2018) — Now that the Dumpster Behind Paul Rich has run off with the Big Red Repaving Machine to bring to a merciful end the race for Berkshire County District Attorney, THE PLANET can turn our attention to another matter involving judicial ascendancy. We speak of the hearings now under way for U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court.

The hearings fired the starting gun for a race by attrition that lugubrious Republicans will finally win but not before hostile Democrats do their worst to stop the process, solidifying the hopeless political division that has robbed this country of its ability to set wise national policy. THE PLANET finds the level of political dysfunction embarrassing, to say nothing of the predictability of the rancor. The United States has lost its moral compass not because of a president (Clinton, Bush 2, Obama or Trump, take your pick) but because of the democratic process’s total collapse into a cesspool of ignorance, close-mindedness, and hatred.

As senate judiciary committee chairman Charles Grassley gaveled open the hearings and began his opening statement, Democrats ignored the rules of order and repeatedly interrupted, demanding a halt to the proceedings. They objected because of an 11th hour document dump totaling 42,000 pages relating to Kavanaugh’s bench work after his appointment by President George W. Bush. They said they needed time to review the documents before they could move on the hearings — as if they would peruse the documents for anything other than rope with which to hang Kavanaugh. A closed mind is a terrible thing to utilize.

Back in the day, the argument might have had merit, but everyone knows desperate Dems were grasping at anything they could find or invent to derail the hearings. Honesty would have had them admit they were acting to avenge the hearings Republicans denied for Merrick Garland, the Supremes nomination of outgoing Obama.

You knew there would be trouble. In the corridors outside the hearing room, a gaggle of women dressed in red capes and white bonnets ala The Handmaiden’s Tale heckled Republican senators as they entered the room. On cue, as Democrats interrupted Grassley, several in the gallery shouted, screamed, screeched, ragged, and otherwise denied every U.S. citizen their rights. By 10:19 a.m. yesterday morning (Tuesday), 22 people were arrested, all of them women. These MeToo-ers exposed themselves for what they are: not people interested in exercising their First Amendment rights but whiny millennials politically PMSing who can’t be taken seriously.

One hour into the hearing, Democrats from the dais interrupted Republicans 44 times. It’s a hallowed number for Syracuse Football, but 44 interruptions in 60 minutes spells digital tragedy for this country.

The odd thing about this is the Democrats’ refusal to look at Kavanaugh’s judicial record. In the last two years of Bush’s term, he ruled against the president eight times, indicating his respect for the law and an ability to put politics aside in reaching decisions. What do we want and expect from a judge? We expect someone who can correctly apply the law to the facts of a case. We expect cases to be decided on legal merits, not on the politics, sex, gender, religion, or color of a person. We do NOT want special rulings given to, for, or against “preferred parties.” THE PLANET has looked at Kavanaugh’s record, using all the political, sexual, gender, or racial disinterest we can muster. We can report he would be a good addition to the Supreme Court.

THE PLANET has no doubt this column will elicit the some of the same political rancor exhibited at the Senate hearings for Kavanaugh. Nonetheless, we proceed in the hope offered by opportunity. We give everyone their say, which is to say we present an opportunity for actually debate, discussion, and deliberation. That’s all we can do. That being said, we ask everyone to do their best to engage in debate rather than the polemics of the sandbox.
