The day marks the unofficial end of summer as we take up the life, again, of school, business, responsibility, and all of that. Here on THE PLANET, we mark the day in the most responsible manner possible: Coffee with friends (the ones who “get” us), an afternoon ballgame, a cigar by a fountain, a romp in a park, and — with Diogenes — a search for an honest man or woman. We won’t find one, of course, but we will take a trip through time and conjure a vision of outfielder Chuck Garivaltis in his AAABA prime, in the zone with the sweetest swing imaginable.
We hear tell of an election tomorrow, but it could all be rumor. You know how that mill runs in Pittsfield, with white water driving the slats of the wheel into a frenzy. The ensuing energy gets burned off into vapor. It’s a waste that should end up in the Dumpster Behind Paul Rich, along with the Andrea Harrington lawn signs. In the end, Paul Caccaviello wins the D.A.’s office (there is no Republican opponent), and he has his shot at what passes for the big time, Pittsfield being the county seat.
We shall keep this brief today, lest it feel too much like work, a Maynard G. Krebs condition that on a day like today finds its best home on an island after what they thought was a “three-hour tour.” While you wait for The Professor to invent a way off the island, we invite you to share your comments on any and all issues. Gotta hand it to John Krol. He wasted no time bullying Teresa Bianchi at a Columbia Avenue polling station this morning.
Mrs. Bianchi (former Mayor Dan Bianchi’s wife) was a couple feet over a 150 feet polling station buffer line; Krol asked to move; she refused – so he called the cops.
