SOCIAL MEDIA KEEPS PROVING THAT IGNORANCE IS FATAL

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION FEB. 15-17, 2019) — Last week, NFL Films released its fabulous “Mic’d Up” film of Super Bowl LVIII. These productions never fail to provide fascinating glimpses of men under pressure, from the Rams’ Aaron Donald psyching himself up before the game with a constant monologue to Patriots’ head coach Bill “8 Rings” Belichick showing the stoicism and calm of experience calling an all-out blitz that forced a game-winning interception and another Super Bowl win in the Patriots’ unprecedented run of greatness.
But this story isn’t about the Patriots, the Rams, or the Super Bowl. It’s about the internet and social media, that guillotine of thought and deliberation turning a generation of young people into ideological cattle and leading them unblinking to an intellectual slaughterhouse. In cyberspace, commercial publishers are interested only in clicks, and their tantalizing, teasing headlines become like junk food loaded with salt, sugar, and chemicals to create instant craving. You’ve seen the headlines: “You Won’t Believe What Looks Like Now” or “Five Things You Are Eating That Are Destroying Your Health.” Invariably, the “stories” produce vapid content and a bewildering array of flashing ads, GIFs, and banners that resemble the faces of slot machines and take you to other pages you never asked to see.
One of the stories had a picture of mic’d-up Patriots QB Tom Brady on the sidelines, conferring with Belichick. The headline said “Brady, Belichick Argue About Game-Winning Play.” The actuality is that nothing like that happened. When you go to the clip, you see Brady suggesting a 41-yard FG to win the game. Makes total strategic sense on 4th and inches up by seven with under two minutes left. Belichick is on his headset, running it by his offensive coordinator, John McDaniels. The seconds-long conversation ends, and Belichick calmly calls for a field goal. No argument. No controversy. No nothing except out the FG unit to make it a two-score game.
Later, the number of hits on the non-story showed how many are quick to jump in on social media, most of it betraying that people hadn’t even seen the clip. They were talking about talk about an event that hadn’t occurred!
The same thing happened after President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address. Going viral: A meme on Nancy Pelosi applauding Trump; a “story” on women wearing white, bringing in references to suffragettes and A Handmaid’s Tale; and Alexandria Ortiz-Cortez not smiling.
Those stories drove much of the “discussion” afterward on young people’s preferred medium. You would think these events were substance of the SOTU speech.
Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker and third in line of presidential succession, applauding … A woman’s clothing as political … A O-C “not smiling” during Trump’s talk … They were “non-story” “stories.” We live, folks, in the age of ironic quotation marks.
All of it does not bode well for the “Republic for which we stand.” Representative democracy requires participation, yes, but participation without knowledge, good information, or the ability to think critically becomes social nitroglycerin. It forms the fermentative environment for demagoguery, despotism, ideology, blind nationalism, absolutism, and the type of divide that has injected itself into nearly every aspect of daily life. Buying produce at the market? You’re making a political statement if you don’t buy organic. Buying a cup of coffee? Used to be you put down your money and got a “cuppa joe.” Now you better be drinking from beans picked from sustainable acreage for companies that have signed on to the Rainforest Accords.
Ignorance is fatal.
And the bad news is that in Pittsfield, municipal elections happen this year. Do the math.

I wrote earlier today that Ocasio Cortez is dangerous as she just celebrated and encouraged New York losing 25,000 Amazon jobs at $150,000.00 each. Does that sound like horrible worker mistreatment to you? The far left has now made themselves judge and jury because they now think that Amazon is horrible and treating labor unfairly.
Far left people on this board said Ocasio Cortez is the face of the future and companies that don’t measure up to their standards, are out. Really? Sounds like power tripping to me. The stupidity that is AOC can be summed up here:

She doesn’t even understand the basics, they weren’t giving Amazon money, they were going to allow them tax breaks based on job creation.
There isn’t a $3 billion pile of money laying around that NYC can now use. In fact there will be much less money now the deal is dead. No new jobs, no new income, no new people with living wages, no new people getting insurance and health care, no new disposable income, at least not from Amazon. And think of this, NY’rs will still spend hundreds of millions with Amazon and that money will not be spent in the local economy, and that money and profits made will go towards job creation in other locations.

The $3 billion in incentives for 25,000 jobs paying an average of six figures (w/ bennies) would amount to $127 billion in taxes revenue, plus 82,000 ancillary spinoff jobs. NYS blew it. This is, BTW, unlike the handouts in Pittsfield. We could go through the list: Spice, Beacon, Eversource, WorkshopLive, Nuclea, and all the rest of them. The city provides incentives, but the companies don’t deliver. They turn out to be schemers and frauds. Amazon, on the other hand, is a legitimate giant. They will be good for everyone of those jobs, every one of those new dollars.
Excellent point! In Pittsfield it actually included grants, “GE money”, and tax incentives to create jobs but the jobs never materialized.

This morning at the Colonial Theatre was the kick off of the Berkshire Blueprint 2.0 A Shared Economic Vision and Plan for Action. While North Adams Mayor Tom Bernard spoke eloquently on economics and as a person in a position of leadership the WHEN girl Linda extolled the “Red Carpet” for Wayfair looking at the notes written for her. Ironically enough the screen behind Mayor Bernard said Tom Bernard Mayor of Pittsfield. Hopefully, with the coming City of Pittsfield Mayoral election this fall we the people elect someone of Mayor Bernard’s intellect and leadership qualities.
I agree but from what I heard on a program last night was the people in long island city where the facility was to be built flat out didnt want it. We really dont know what it is like to be in other peoples shoes. What does Pittsfield use the excise tax money for? this should be used for road repair. What was it originally supposed to be used for?
Local receipts like motor vehicle excise, property tax, personal property excise all funnel into the general fund and are used to pay the bills of a given city or town.
In Pittsfield about half (47%) the local receipts, $5.2 million are motor vehicle excise.
A large contributor to road repairs, are chapter 90 funds via state aid, Pittsfield will receive about $1.65 million in 2019.
That’s money via reimbursement for projects like repaving, there is a winter road account as well.
The problem for Pittsfield is they are losing population and the roads are in disrepair. The allocation for chapter 90 funds as well as 70 are based on a formula directly tied to population, employment, and road miles.
One of the hidden gems of why to give illegals drivers licenses, it boosts the population numbers for the city.
Maybe Pittsfield needs to rethink its road funding? Perhaps cut down on the tax give aways to rich folk?
And possibly some people are leaving BECAUSE of the mayors shitty roads. What would be a priority in most cities seems to be an afterthought in Pittsfield. Go figger.

Our government is like the museum board – they ignore every opportunity to take responsibility and their first move is to absolve responsibility and get an easy fix that doesn’t expect them to do their jobs. The good news is that DACA amnesty has not been included. Also, the wall is no longer “immoral” as the Dems have agreed to partial funding. According to news sources, Trump now has identified 8 billion in funding from other sources – to fund the completion of the wall.

The bill is far from perfect. But it was a bipartisan deal and both sides had to give up something. That’s the nature of compromise. The alternative was another partial gov’t shutdown. Congress (Dems included) and Trump did the right thing because there really wasn’t any other viable alternative.
This is the best you can get from the partisan politics that have taken over the country.

Great point. The key to personal advancement is to START SOMEWHERE. The Old Professor advised his students constantly on that point. Case study: I had a student, good kid, hard worker. He got a job as a grunt at a local McDonald. He did the job well and earned promotions to shift leader, asst. mgr., then mgr. He found he enjoyed the food-service industry. His family then moved to Wisconsin (dad took a better job there). The lad got a job managing a McD’s out there. He then caught the attention of the district manager. Long story short: The lad is now a McD’s regional mgr making 100K a year. This can happen to anyone who wants to work hard, apply themselves, and has the requisite talent. This is irrespective of all delimiters including race, gender, or anything else. Companies today are DESPERATE for good, hard working, clean young people. But don’t show up at the interview dressed like a bum, covered with tattoos and facial piercings, telling the manager when you will work and when you won’t, then cry because they didn’t call you back.

An interesting point Trump made in the press conference was that China does not have a drug problem because convicted traffickers face the death penalty. Great idea! Do you think our Dem legislators would run with that idea? Not! Warren & Markey haven’t initiated legislation to improve life in the U.S. in their entire public service careers.

There are many reasons China’s drug problem is not as bad a ours. Very strict laws certainly act as a deterrent. They also have very tight borders compared to us. Their culture also frowns upon drug use more than ours. But make no mistake about it – they do have a drug problem. All countries do. It’s just that ours has gotten so bad, pervasive, and out of control other countries pale in comparison.
China is the largest exporter and mfg of synthetic opioids and by far the largest user. It’s just not reported.

LW. I listened to a lengthy conversation regarding Amazon last night on NPR out of Albany. It was difficult at first to find out what went wrong but some officials from long island city stated flat out that the residents of long island city didnt want it because they said it was too big a project that would destroy the type of life they were accustomed to. According to these LIC officials nearly all the residents were opposed and the officials sided with the residents. Let’s look at a situation that occurred here in pittsfield where by city residents voted 4’to 1 not to build the new taconic high school. We all know that this school was a colossal mistake but our officials didnt care about how we thought Thumbs up for long island city officials and thumbs down for pittsfield city officials.!!!
The people whothat live near at the old I T A M don’t want car traffic and parking, as it is over on Waubeek and Constitution off Hancock Rd. Let’s see who gets their way on this one. The owner is proposing a shuttle service.

See perhaps a very simple solution for the new club would be to have valet parking only. That way the owners can insure that cars are only parked in legal parking spots. I’m not a Trump supporter but I a feel an uneasy respect for him forcing the wall – as he promised to do it. It would be pretty nifty if following up on promises became a thing – but most of Trumps promises make rational people shudder.
I’m more libertarian than of one party and I feel like the border does have a crisis. We do need better immigration laws. Why would anyone pay a lawyer and go through the bureaucracy of the ‘legal immigration’ if they can cut corners and wide up in the same place.
Immigrants work hard and contribute but millions of people over the border with kids and whatever else is a crisis. I’m not an alarmist on terrorism but we do need more formalities. Surely intelligent, reasonable people can find a better way?
I respectfully disagree – we suffer like Greece or other countries near conflict. Putting kids in cages is a crisis, in my opinion. Social media is the opiate of the weak-minded and uneducated. When I was a kid, I was pretty much in a state of disbelief at the stack of supermarket tabloids stacked on a table next to my mother’s chair. The National Enquirer being one of them. It stunned me that anyone could believe that crap.

No thanks! If – and I mean IF – I want nonsense, I’ll turn on my TV and go to the one banned channel in my home – Fox. Our bright little glowing phones, computer screens, and iPads are the bait that sucks us in like hungry trout to a lure.
I read some of the posts on this page. Conservative Republicans make often foolish remarks about Democrats. Liberal Democrats attack the conservatives. If I want to start a fight here, I know just who to target and what to say to get it rolling.
All I can say people is this: smarten up. Look at any position from all sides, and for heaven’s sake, turn off every now and then.

Glad someone picked up on the meat of my posting today, instead of all the other ancillary stuff. Recently I was asked by some college students what would I ban if I could magically eliminate one thing from the contemporary world. Without hesitation, I said, “Social media.” I waited for the gorans, but to my pleasant surprise, I was applauded. I have met many young people — smart, intelligent, ambitious — who loathe how much they have been compromised by technology.
I completely disagree with the both of you, more than you can imagine.
Social media is a tool, like any other tool it can be used for good and it can be used for bad.
A gun in the hands of a criminal is a very bad thing. A gun in the hands of a potential victim can be a very good thing.
It all comes down to intent and the motivations of the individual.

Of course it reflects the user. And we do have a large knowledge base now to see how social media is being used. For those born into it, for whom it is a necessary appendage, they have no notion of privacy, think nothing of posting all manner of tripe, and do not know what the constant use has done to their abilities to critically think (only the most translatable social skill needed to successfully negotiate life as a productive, independent adult).
I couldn’t agree more than with the loss of the ability to employ critical thinking. A professor at a local college commented to me this exact point: “My students are so active on social media that they have no time for critical thinking or contemplation, let alone getting assignments done on time.”
Social media as a tool? A gun is really nothing more than a tool as well. It can be used for sport. To even hunt for food. In the hands of those with defective brains, it’s used for mass killing.
Social media should be just one arrow in your quiver. You need to watch network news from multiple sources. Read multiple newspaper articles whether online or – as I often say – in an analog format.
Sadly, we are using the anonymity that social media provides us with to come off as a nation of fools.

Kinda scary, because the one thing that jumps out of the Trump presidency is what it has revealed about the social experiment that is us. I find what I see rather frightening. The tribalism is shocking in the face of the reality. Everyone looking at the same thing but apparently seeing something different. Either that or refusing to believe what is before their eyes. Freaks me out.
People have their opinions and I respect that. But when they ignore proven facts or lie through their teeth, I find that reprehensible. Politicians, from ALL parties, are so guilty of both it’s appalling.
Doomie two people looking at the same thing sometimes see minor inconsistencies but when two people look at the same thing and one says its true and the other says its false there is something inherently wrong with one of them. When someone is asked to draw a square box on a piece of paper. We can identify proof positively those who are right and who is wrong. We have a common knowledge base to draw from but some do not have this common knowledge base. This is a simplistic example which doesnt require much thought process but when we get into nigher intelligence requiring processes the problem gets bigger. At this point exact right wrong answers start to break down and opinion takes over and sometimes opinions are so far out that entire discussions amongst people totally breaks down. We see this every day on this board and in society as a whole. We can never fully correct this problem because as a society we are losing our common knowledge base and when that happens what we see today is what we get. Get use to it. I Guess

In this day and age of the inner webby thingy majig if you go to the Google machine and in the box simply type in Live border cameras a number of live feed camera links pop up that you can view to give you an idea. While it is not the same as being there it does give you an uncensored unedited raw view of what’s going on down there without the contextualizing of Either Hannity or Madow. Also please check raids online for the zip code of your choice near the border for crimes in any specific area then compare them to say Beverly Hills or Marin County. You could also compare Birth rates and records from communities directly across the border vs any other community. This whole inner webby thingy majig gives someone a portal into any facet of life in any town. Even the terrible social media that we are discussing you could go to facebook and get a taste of life say in Brownsville Texas by joining a page like Brownsville Neighborhood watch etc. While it wont give you the same vantage point of living there it will take the statement of “We as individuals living in pittsfield have no idea what is happening at the border. How could we??” and at least diminish the have no idea portion.

Pat. The judgement can best be described only as atrocious. I dont know the specifics of the case but the quantity of drugs were clearly not for personal use. Personal use or not this one individual should have received a much much stiffer sentence than he received. I have stated on this board many times that the city government here in pittsfield is problem number one and problem number two is the courts. Many oppose mandatory sentencing but it is one tool that levels the playing field and handcuffs the Gobs from seeing their family and friends get special treatment that isnt available to the rest of us. I have a couple of examples of extreme bias in the courts where the clearly guilty walked and the clearly innocent went to jail.. If pctv went to commercial backed programming only. 98% of the current programing would be eliminated in a heart beat. The two so called award wining shows mentioned here wouldn’t stand a prayer of finding paid advertising. There is very little I watch on pctv because much of it is terrible content and hard to take. It has become so bad that there is probably less than 5% of the population watching at any given time. Pctv should work with spectrum to do something like a neilsan rating to find out what people are watching and what they are not. This would serve the community well and there is a certainty that the shows talked about that won the awards would be pulled first. I think that everyone who works for pctv is doing their best but they unfortunately dont have the tools to do the job they are capable of. Perhaps when we send our bills back to spectrum we could ask them to zis pctv to find out what people are watching and increase it and reduce what people are not watching. This is just common sense but everyone in pittsfield knows how common sense plays out here!!!

The tabloid sites are even worse. Sites like TMZ, in a desire to “scoop” the other sites about the Smollett “attack” pushed a narrative that was not only false but further embellished the story to include details “no one else had” under the banner of an “exclusive”.
Turns out the entire story was a fake news/fake attack and instead of being journalists, investigation the accusations, almost all news orgs ran with the raw statements and did zero investigative journalism. When news organizations wonder why people yell fake news, they only need look to the end of their long noses.

The Green New Deal wants control over every aspect of our lives. Health, business, transportation, food, etc. It would require a massive amount of government and government regulation, the likes of which we have never seen before in this country.
