PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

———- ooo ———-

ADD 3, MARCH 22, 2019 — ‘Twas not to be for the Syracuse men’s basketball team in the first round of March Madness in Salt Lake City. That game was lost before the first tipoff, when word came of senior center Frank Howard testing positive for drugs. The 7’2″ idiot, only coming off the best two games of his career and only on the eve of the season’s biggest contest, put himself before the team. Great leadership, Mr. Senior. Hand it to Baylor, though. As we predicted, they won from 3-point land. Now they get the privilege of losing to Gonzaga.

On Monday, THE PLANET resumes our regular M-W-F schedule.

——————-

ADD 2, MARCH 20, 2019 — Two interesting things going on in Salt Lake City at the moment. Sen. Mitt Romney, no stranger to THE PLANET, gave what-for to President Donald Trump over Trump’s criticism of the late John McCain. Any man that can win major elections in The People’s Republic of Massachusetts and Brigham Young country has to have “it.” As for Trump’s comments on McCain, once again, the president’s penchant for speaking his mind stirs the pot. Politics can’t handle frankness, especially when it’s mixed with the honesty of one’s feelings. National politics, especially, requires the rhetorical filter so that one’s public remarks add up to many bland words but few sharp declarations. We don’t agree with Trump’s assessment of McCain, but we still love his refusal, perhaps it’s his inability, to ply it safe by tempering his words.

The other interesting thing in the Great Salt Lake is the Syracuse men’s basketball team appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament (what golfer Sam Snead used to call “toon-a-mint”). The Orange will win by playing shut-down “D” and getting enough on “O” from Ty Battle and uber-6th man Buddy Boeheim. Baylor wins by shooting out the lights from three-point range. As for the city itself, Salt Lake is a clean, well-lighted place (sorry, Ernie). Streets are sensibly laid out, and it’s easy to get around. It’s a little smaller in size that Syracuse but it still has that “small big-city” flavor. The 4,000-ft. elevation is not noticeable — unless you’re playing full court. That’s why Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim got the lads to SLC early in the week. March Madness is called the Big Dance, but we shall dance for spring, which arrives in the Northeast at 5:58 p.m. today.

On a final note, THE PLANET has learned of the death of a notable past Pittsfield political figure, with whom we had plenty of dealings. The family has asked for privacy, and we shall respect that until public word is either issued or leaks out elsewhere. We did want to convey our deep condolences and god-speed.

———- 000 ———-

ADD 1 FROM SOMEWHERE OVER THE SKIES TOWARD SALT LAKE CITY, TUESDAY 3-19-19 FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH — Thank you Thomas More, one of this site’ most valued participants. He referred us to an article in iBerkshires about the latest grad for handouts from the “gimme groups.” They’re after $1 million in Community Preservation Act money. Problem: There’s only a little more than $600K. THE PLANET predicts that among those who will get the dough will be:

  • The pickleball courts at Springside Park.
  • The group wanting design plans for the renovation of the Munster Mansion at Springside Park. Problem here isn’t with the house. It’s with the busybodies behind this push, who have turned an otherwise worthy affair into a tarpit of slimy politics. The roster includes the same tired names that are always trying to suck up with The Powers in town. Lord help us.
  • Money for renovating the dugouts and new lighting at the Doyle Softball Complex on Benedict Road.

With all the problems facing the city, these are the items of priority. Taxpayers should remember that the pool of money for the CPAA comes from a 1% surcharge (“DON’T CALL IT A TAX HIKE” — Matt Kerwood) robbed from your pockets as attached to your property tax bills. You had NO SAY in that 1% added tax. Oh, sure, the pols will tell you that you “voted” on it, but that was that was never on the up and up.

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY MARCH 18, 20019) — Spring break is here, and THE PLANET will be on it. We shall board the break as one would do hopping a freight train, running to match its speed and jumping in the first open door we see. First a few open thoughts about matters of the day:

  • If you’re posting a comment and it doesn’t appear immediately, don’t panic. It has been assigned to moderation. It’s part of improved security for the site to keep the contributions at the highest level we can. It’s not so easy on the internet.
  • The shootings in New Zealand speak for themselves, of course, in the somber toll of dead and wounded. Senseless as they are, we can’t help but think it borderline miraculous that more of these don’t happen. It testifies that people are good at heart and also to the vulnerability we have as members of a society, networked as we are.
  • Lowering the voting age makes no sense for a number of reasons. First that pops into THE PLANET‘s noggin? Young people’s lack of knowledge about government, the Constitution, and civics in general. See, the geniuses who run public school systems got rid of civics and also home economics, another vital core of knowledge, in favor of feel-good-about-yourself B.S.
  • If anything, the voting age should be raised to 25, the age at which the human brain reaches maturity regarding decision making. Only “adults” should vote.
  • As for the act itself, any election that fails to draw 50%+1 of the electorate should be deemed void. If we continue to pretend that low turnouts are representative, we will be stuck with the present form of one-party steamrolling that’s sunk the city of Pittsfield.
  • Another reform: Every ballot should have a “None of the Above” option.
  • Jason “JIV” McCandless needs $6 million additional dollars for Pittsfield Public Schools like Earl Persip needs a loaf of Wonderbread. Rewarding failure has become the norm for the school department, whose budget has destroyed city government’s ability to light its streets, keep those streets safe, provide safe roads, and other such items.
  • No contemplation for office should be without an ample supply of lawn signs.

  • On April 1, nomination papers become available for anyone wishing to run for office. Papers come with a new requirement, that candidates must at all times display a “Kick Me” sign taped to their backs.
  • Running for office in Pittsfield is like … THE PLANET isn’t sure what its like, actually, except that “it lies somewhere between the pit of a person’s fear and the summit of their knowledge.”
  • The Red Sox won the World Series, then the Patriots won the Super Bowl. With both the Celtics and Bruins heading to their respective playoffs, is it just plain greedy to want a Foursome of World Titles?

How much money do the various elected local positions pay and what happens if you no show? Is there a recall provision or do you get paid for 2 years?

Dan, though you may be right on, on brain development, applying same logic would mean no drinking, dope smoking, entering contracts, marriage, or otherwise, or serving
in armed services and henceforth how
Many WW2 soldiers would not have served and sacrificed? If you couldn’t enlist until you were were smart enough not to, who would? Will women be drafted next time? Why are they not preregistering now like the young men?

Nice sign Danno

Joining the military is about physical ability. Older commanders make the decisions about strategic moves in the military while young recruits follow their orders. That said, I think military enrollment should not be until 18 or 19 and not 16 which is very young. While marriage should demand that people use at least some logic while making their decision, it is more of an emotional commitment. Drug and alcohol use is bad at any age.

I agree with Dan about the voting age being 25 for the reasons he mentioned.

As at the federal level money controls Pittsfield’s elections. Short of regulating how much money a candidate can toss around Pittsfield will always be controlled from under the table by special interests. It is likely that the head of the teachers union already knows who the next mayor is as he will be telling these lemmings how to vote.

The State sends Pittsfield Ma. 3.5 million in tax relief, tax relief I say and Department head Mccandless takes every nickle away.Fire this employee, fire Jake McCandless. When he says he’s well aware of the sacrifices of poverty stricken taxpaying WW2 veterans hes BSing.Makes me sick to live in Pittsfield. Its not the people of this once great small city its the department heads, the politicians and yes the School Committee members are politicians.Very weak people who only care that they stay in the popular click…..
Again the State of Ma. Sent tax relief to Pittsfield Ma.taxpayers and Department head Mccandless is stealing it.Where are our councilors?

LGM no you cant make this up. The fact that it is real should be a wake up call for all of us. These high paying no accountability positions are growing rapidly in the school dept. This city musy go to a city manager position type of govt. These feel good positions would never be tolerated by a city manager or a competent mayor. IF the current crop of flinkies get re elected in November we might as well pull the shades pack our baggs and head for greener pastures. The middle class is being squezzed like never before. We are i dire need of real thinkers in city hall. Candidates please come forward.

Why isn’t anyone bothered by the wtbr radio being used as a platform in the morning advocating many non student related issues, it has become a cottage advertisement for politicians and administrators to advance the jobs they now have. How can all of these people be great…..when they’re clearly not. I don’t give a rats behind what they do at PCTV but I would like to see the radio side of it go back to excluvely student programming. This is taxpayer dollars, where’s the F C C?. P S the programming on the morning show is just unlistenable! Thank You

The ever increasing school budget is destroying the city. And no attempt is ever made to lower it. If only that money bettered our school system. Instead our schools are getting a terrible reputation.

Our SC and CC are spineless. Why?

Why do they need more? They would not even need Bakers handout if they made any effort to control their budget. The whole school system seems to be a vehicle to shuffle taxpayer money around greasing all necessary palms along the way.

The losers are the children who are certainly not coming out of Pittsfield schools knowing much more than when they went in. It is largely a bogus operation in my view. Might be a crime in another country.

Your last post about the innovation center had me laughing all day. The picture of that smug dude with the wrong name was hysterical. I’m trying not to swear for lent so have not been posting and keeping off the board.
The person who said Pittsfield is a body without a spine got it right. Free money for exterior home repair sounds about right. I have wondered if the politicians could be as stupid as their PR quotes and it’s depressing to think, why yes, yes they are that stupid. Or that dishonest. Or both!
If anyone from Warren’s office reads this – how to account for the vast economic inequality in Pittsfield (Berkshire Co)? I won’t vote for you and I will tell everyone not to that I know in other states. You can’t fix your own backyard so hit the bricks.
Chrome dome Hind’s plan for a NYC to Pittsfield train sounds damn stupid too, it takes three hours to get to Pittsfield from Albany on a train. I doubt that anyone from the illustrious Senators office ever tried that route but maybe quick he could get a minion to do so? I’m sure he can marshal vast infrastructure resources to fix Amtrack.
Neal should just give up. Everthing he says and does looks totally sad and desperate. And he’s completely ineffective.
Lastly Bouvior is sh@t. I will never get over the museum theft and anyone who thinks Mazzeo as mayor will be any better with her goombas is sadly mistaken.
I advise you all to move to a better area so your kids have decent schools and you can get a living wage job. The US had loads of those kinds of communities, just not in the backwards Berkshire.

Yea, not to mention you can drive to the Amtrak station in Hudson, 37 miles away, hop on an Amtrak, and be in NYC Penn Station, 3 hours after you leave Da Pitts, and there are several trains back and forth, 7 days a week, not one day a week like the stupid Berkshire Flyer, which will be another was of our money.

Written in the early 70′ s, it’s about the shady dealings in that world, crooked museum administrators, and the way museums deal in art. Her speil came so close to what happened here that I was astonished. This might explain what was happening at our museum.

Dan it seems the Planet has become more user friendly with the absence of certain posters and their various aliases. How sad that this mayor and the Lefty Libs on the council were determined to give this waste water bid to Kleinfelder. Their % on this contract is 5-7 million, did Tyer and her Yes Ma’am voters share any of this. Her living arrangements have really improved during her term even with Clairmonts help. From a taxpayers view the ozonator looks more like the right fit for now and the future.
Just read Tony S is going to retire from the council. He has served more than admirably. He was no kiss ass to any mayor and he listened to the issues and cared about the taxpayers. Do you hear that Marchetti-Krol-White-Caccamo-Moon-Persip. Taxpayers first not the mayor and your agendas!

Fire department head Jake McCandless for irresponsible management of city funds.Council needs to question leftover funds that are used this year to buy item s for next years budget.Ask Behnke or McCandless if they do this rather than return it to taxpayers. They will still put items in the budget request that they have already bought. The schools are a cash scam. All you have to do is interview them on record. The department s budget is so huge it hard for people to follow the money.Everyone acts like they know where the money goes.New high school is a money pit.Electric bill is much larger than anticipated.Nobody told the public this.

St. Mary’s is a historical site. This makes them eligible for a new roof from CPA money. They are also in a budding economical engine zone making them eligible for GE money. And being a special interest candidate they are eligible for Stanley- like tax breaks and coddling.

Typical Socialism/Communism. Whenever there is money and gov’t mixed together the end result is always bad for the people and great for the gobsigs. And the larger the gov’t is the larger the amount of corruption is.
At least in the private sector malfeasance is sometimes caught and the perps get jail time and a fine. But in gov’t they get away scott free every time. The Big Dig was the most corrupt construction project in this county’s history. But no one was ever charged with anything. Because the gov’t was behind it all.

For once can you just stop parroting what you hear or read from liberal media. When you repeat a lie you are lying too.

LW, same here. People need to look at what they paid in Federal taxes last year compared to this year not their tax return. Many fail to look at how much more is in their weekly pay check.

Student loans are Socialism, going to state college is socialism.Imagine only private schools and private college all for profit.Imagine having to get a personal loan for college at 12 % for 65k every year.Thank God for social programs in a Capitilist system,it works.Keep voting regressive and you get pure capitalism. Most of us could not get anywhere in that economic pyramid

You are really off your game today. Public schools are all for profit too – a profit where our tax dollars are being given to grossly overpaid, over benefited, under worked employees with no accountability whatsoever. All for a failed product that isn’t even controlled by the market.
And why don’t you understand that college tuition being so high is a direct result of gov’t student loans? All the colleges and universities did was raise their prices so that students pay the same as they used to, but now they get the extra gov’t loan on top of it. These loans were never meant to benefit students, they were meant to benefit the special interests, in this case higher education.

We have such a reputation for drug usage in this area that a chocolatier from Brooklyn wants to turn the former JC Penney site in the Berkshire Mall into a chocolate pot store. What a waste!!

Will any decent retail stores come into this area again or will we continue on the downhill trend for this area?!? How about stores for women who are not interested in drugs, pot, or alcohol?

Pat,if you owe 4000 per year federal tax and you pay in 5000 k per year 1000 More than required. If you get that 1000 in your pay check you still don’t get a tax cut but you do keep your over payment in your takehome.I understand my obligation is still the same.Others think they got a tax cut.

No one on the right worries about AOC. They are very happy she’s around. She and Omar make Pelosi look weak and the Dems look like racists, anti-semites, and detached from reality.
She’s a blessing to the right wing.
And which is the party of fear? The one that says the world will end in 12 years, that racism is a huge problem in this country, and lies that Trump is going to start a war. Hint: it’s not the Republicans.

I’m worried about AOC and the other three that make up the Fab Four. I’m worried that they won’t be around long enough. Pelosi is behind the scenes working to get them booted while smiling on camera. The elders want to keep what powers they have gotten back and want more.

And the only reason why AOC and Omar get the attention they do is they say incredibly stupid things on a regular basis.
There are many freshman representatives in Congress. We here little about them because they don’t open their yaps and let the stupidity fly out.

Yes they do say incredibly stupid things but that’s only part of why they get the coverage, the other is that they are young, female, and good looking. If they were dogs, they would be about a much coverage as a kennel. Has to be embarrassing for women.

Paraphrasing Gomer Pyle, Surprize, Surprise ! Maxy was “awarded” the million+ dollar contract to demolish the Columbus Ave. parking garage. Strange how they always get the last look and the award. Maybe having a state senator (politician) as a family in law helps. It never ends in the Pitts.

Who built it? For how much? How much was dumped in since then? How much parking revenue? How much to take it down? Simply put, how much did Pittsfield lose, collectively, on this concert cash cow?

Petricca Unistress built it. It was designed and built for 3 levels.
City let it go to pot. Not enough was dumped into it to save it.

Business – “General Electric’s CEO now makes 345 times the company’s median worker”
Don Seiffert, American City Business Journals, March 19, 2019

Total pay for the CEO of General Electric Co. more than doubled from the previous year — and it’s 345 times higher than the median employee pay rate at the company, one of the highest CEO pay ratios of any public company in Massachusetts. GE CEO Larry Culp, who was hired last October, earns an annualized total compensation of $20,086,327, Boston-based GE (NYSE: GE) said in its proxy filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. That’s up 222 percent from the annualized compensation of $9,000,603 earned in 2017 by Culp’s predecessor, former CEO John Flannery, who was fired as of Oct. 1, 2018.

Well now, look at the water plant issue? It seems this parasite Crypto doesn’t get addressed with the consultants plan, which is millions over another idea, which ironically gets rid of both phosphorous, which the E P A has charged the City of Pittsfield with, also,at a fraction of the cost? Who is running this operation at the City Hall anyway? Why would the Council not consider an alternative, especially now? Thank you.

So instead of building a bigger parking deck for more parking for their precious downtown, the City is regressing back to the ’60’s when we used to do the loop on North Street and gather in the surface lot until we got kicked out by the cops.

May not need a new parking deck. It is not like the future of downtown Pittsfield is projected to exactly go gang busters. What you are seeing is an admission that the renaissance of the downtown is a man made mirage. While some people filled their pockets during the façade makeover, the reality is much different. It is a truth the spin ministers rather not talk about.

I read that there is a Pittsfield Town Hall on Saturday, March 23rd, from 1 pm – 3 pm, and the progressives invited Congressman Richie Neal to attend their forum. I wonder what is their political agenda? It is probably to impeach Donald Trump. Who are the local people who are organizing this left-wing political forum? Will they address Pittsfield politics, or state politics, too?

Whether you realize it or not, there have been, and currently there are ongoing military trials going on.

John McCain was tried and convicted of his role in the support of ISIS that led to the death of our troops. There may have been other crimes as well, but of this I am not sure.

From what I learned, the deal was made to allow him to be executed with dignity to maintain his facade of integrity. Yes, President Trump did authorize this. McCain’s family should just say thank you and go away. President Trump is obviously itching to expose John McCain, based on his comments. He is probably regretting making this deal. He should have made it all public.

Here is a link to an interview by Cuomo with John Kasich on CNN, where Kasich makes a Freudian slip (telling the truth) about the execution of John McCain. If you don’t want to listen to the blowhard Kasich, fast forward to 4 minutes 55 seconds and listen from there. That is where it gets good. Also, note how the interviewer doesn’t go back to that. A good interviewer might have said, “what did you just say?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvUyCaKo86E

Once the Mueller report is out and publicly says there was no Russian collusion, just as the congressional investigations have already stated, there will be more military trials of high ranking politicians and traitors. Maybe some of these will also be covert until it makes sense to disclose.

About two years ago McCandless and deputy Joe “technology “ Curtis were hiring a consultant to recommend consolidating elementary schools. School committee meeting discussions.

This is typical government strategy when they don’t want to do their job because it is not politically neutral. Rather than doing their job and being good stewards of the district they waste additional money on consulting. If mr data, Joe Curtis cannot figure this closing/consolidation out, he should resign.

So whatever happened to that study?
Which schools are going to be closed?

Free speech is allowed on college campuses or no research money. Who would have EVER thought that in America, of all places, that this day would come. That our president would need to protect free speech. Thank you President Trump!!

College students should not be beaten up or silenced if they don’t speak far left nonsense. Young people on these campuses have been so indoctrinated by the far left teachers that they will need to detoxify after college just like they had to do with people who joined cults in the 60s and 70s. The far left indoctrination on these campuses and even in grade schools has become like a cult.
