PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

———- ooo ———-

ADD 3, MARCH 22, 2019 — ‘Twas not to be for the Syracuse men’s basketball team in the first round of March Madness in Salt Lake City. That game was lost before the first tipoff, when word came of senior center Frank Howard testing positive for drugs. The 7’2″ idiot, only coming off the best two games of his career and only on the eve of the season’s biggest contest, put himself before the team. Great leadership, Mr. Senior. Hand it to Baylor, though. As we predicted, they won from 3-point land. Now they get the privilege of losing to Gonzaga.

On Monday, THE PLANET resumes our regular M-W-F schedule.

——————-

ADD 2, MARCH 20, 2019 — Two interesting things going on in Salt Lake City at the moment. Sen. Mitt Romney, no stranger to THE PLANET, gave what-for to President Donald Trump over Trump’s criticism of the late John McCain. Any man that can win major elections in The People’s Republic of Massachusetts and Brigham Young country has to have “it.” As for Trump’s comments on McCain, once again, the president’s penchant for speaking his mind stirs the pot. Politics can’t handle frankness, especially when it’s mixed with the honesty of one’s feelings. National politics, especially, requires the rhetorical filter so that one’s public remarks add up to many bland words but few sharp declarations. We don’t agree with Trump’s assessment of McCain, but we still love his refusal, perhaps it’s his inability, to ply it safe by tempering his words.

The other interesting thing in the Great Salt Lake is the Syracuse men’s basketball team appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament (what golfer Sam Snead used to call “toon-a-mint”). The Orange will win by playing shut-down “D” and getting enough on “O” from Ty Battle and uber-6th man Buddy Boeheim. Baylor wins by shooting out the lights from three-point range. As for the city itself, Salt Lake is a clean, well-lighted place (sorry, Ernie). Streets are sensibly laid out, and it’s easy to get around. It’s a little smaller in size that Syracuse but it still has that “small big-city” flavor. The 4,000-ft. elevation is not noticeable — unless you’re playing full court. That’s why Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim got the lads to SLC early in the week. March Madness is called the Big Dance, but we shall dance for spring, which arrives in the Northeast at 5:58 p.m. today.

On a final note, THE PLANET has learned of the death of a notable past Pittsfield political figure, with whom we had plenty of dealings. The family has asked for privacy, and we shall respect that until public word is either issued or leaks out elsewhere. We did want to convey our deep condolences and god-speed.

———- 000 ———-

ADD 1 FROM SOMEWHERE OVER THE SKIES TOWARD SALT LAKE CITY, TUESDAY 3-19-19 FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH — Thank you Thomas More, one of this site’ most valued participants. He referred us to an article in iBerkshires about the latest grad for handouts from the “gimme groups.” They’re after $1 million in Community Preservation Act money. Problem: There’s only a little more than $600K. THE PLANET predicts that among those who will get the dough will be:

  • The pickleball courts at Springside Park.
  • The group wanting design plans for the renovation of the Munster Mansion at Springside Park. Problem here isn’t with the house. It’s with the busybodies behind this push, who have turned an otherwise worthy affair into a tarpit of slimy politics. The roster includes the same tired names that are always trying to suck up with The Powers in town. Lord help us.
  • Money for renovating the dugouts and new lighting at the Doyle Softball Complex on Benedict Road.

With all the problems facing the city, these are the items of priority. Taxpayers should remember that the pool of money for the CPAA comes from a 1% surcharge (“DON’T CALL IT A TAX HIKE” — Matt Kerwood) robbed from your pockets as attached to your property tax bills. You had NO SAY in that 1% added tax. Oh, sure, the pols will tell you that you “voted” on it, but that was that was never on the up and up.

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY MARCH 18, 20019) — Spring break is here, and THE PLANET will be on it. We shall board the break as one would do hopping a freight train, running to match its speed and jumping in the first open door we see. First a few open thoughts about matters of the day:

  • If you’re posting a comment and it doesn’t appear immediately, don’t panic. It has been assigned to moderation. It’s part of improved security for the site to keep the contributions at the highest level we can. It’s not so easy on the internet.
  • The shootings in New Zealand speak for themselves, of course, in the somber toll of dead and wounded. Senseless as they are, we can’t help but think it borderline miraculous that more of these don’t happen. It testifies that people are good at heart and also to the vulnerability we have as members of a society, networked as we are.
  • Lowering the voting age makes no sense for a number of reasons. First that pops into THE PLANET‘s noggin? Young people’s lack of knowledge about government, the Constitution, and civics in general. See, the geniuses who run public school systems got rid of civics and also home economics, another vital core of knowledge, in favor of feel-good-about-yourself B.S.
  • If anything, the voting age should be raised to 25, the age at which the human brain reaches maturity regarding decision making. Only “adults” should vote.
  • As for the act itself, any election that fails to draw 50%+1 of the electorate should be deemed void. If we continue to pretend that low turnouts are representative, we will be stuck with the present form of one-party steamrolling that’s sunk the city of Pittsfield.
  • Another reform: Every ballot should have a “None of the Above” option.
  • Jason “JIV” McCandless needs $6 million additional dollars for Pittsfield Public Schools like Earl Persip needs a loaf of Wonderbread. Rewarding failure has become the norm for the school department, whose budget has destroyed city government’s ability to light its streets, keep those streets safe, provide safe roads, and other such items.
  • No contemplation for office should be without an ample supply of lawn signs.

  • On April 1, nomination papers become available for anyone wishing to run for office. Papers come with a new requirement, that candidates must at all times display a “Kick Me” sign taped to their backs.
  • Running for office in Pittsfield is like … THE PLANET isn’t sure what its like, actually, except that “it lies somewhere between the pit of a person’s fear and the summit of their knowledge.”
  • The Red Sox won the World Series, then the Patriots won the Super Bowl. With both the Celtics and Bruins heading to their respective playoffs, is it just plain greedy to want a Foursome of World Titles?

Does anyone on this board understand that the Mueller investigation is about Russian influence into our elections.Of course the liar Trump made it about him and you bought another lie.
Let’s face it Trump insanely lashes out at the McCain family because his family no matter how filthy rich they are dont get respect the way McCain’s do.And Trump just feels insignificant even as he gloats about his military prep school failures.Trump voters support a brand.Branding works, just not for everybody. To me his brand is ignorance.

No, School Committee. The far left made the Mueller report all about President Trump. Stop changing the facts. It was a referendum on his presidency. He is colluding with Russia is all we have heard for the past two and a half years. The far left has been spinning this collusion tale to puff up themselves and put down President Trump. Even though the rest of us kept saying that Mueller wouldn’t be dragging out this investigation on President Trump if they had evidence he was in bed with Russia. Would he be in the White House right now? Oh, let’s leave him in until the investigation is done. What harm can he do as a double agent if we allow him to stay in the White House?

America, please wake up. If there was evidence against President Trump, Mueller would be obligated to tell the country right away. It’s just common sense.

This report, which will probably never see the light of day, will expose the Trump crime family and its rampage through America.

It is Americas only hope to survive the Trump family takeover and rule. Americas future is hanging by a thread. Glad I have no children who will have to live through it.

It would appear that many do not understand the orders given Mueller – investigate Russian collusion AND ANY OTHER ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES UNCOVERED DURING AS A RESULT OF THE INVESTIGATION.

It is clearly obvious that Trump’s entire professional career has been about operating his businesses in the shadows, frequently skirting the law. He still believes he is above the law, and he is such a narcissist that everything is about him.

There is no doubt that Trump violated federal election laws in his payments to his female consorts in his directions to Cohen. Mueller’s alleged “witch hunt” has been held to be legal by multiple federal court rulings, and while the current indictments and convictions have nothing to do with Russian collusion, that is no guarantee that in the end, collusion did not occur.

I believe that if there was Russian collusion, Mueller will close up shop with a slew of indictments, and if Trump was involved, he may simply be an unindicted co-conspirator, or simply shown to be so intellectually deprived that he was clueless as to what was going on around him.

But to blame the far left? Rather stupid. Name one far left person that told Trump to hop into the sack with Daniels and then have her paid off to keep her mouth shut, all while Cohen recorded Trump’s involvement on a smartphone.

Let’s just wait and see what the end brings.

Frankly, Trump has no moral standing at all when compared to Mueller.

The Left started the false narrative about Russian collusion and paid for the fake dossier to get a FISA warrant so, yes, they are to blame. This was the whole fall back plan of the Dems and the scum in the FBI like Comey and Strzok.
I find what the Dems, FBI, and Obama’s Justice Dept did far, far worse than Trump cheating on his wife and paying off those sluts.
And what the Dems did to Kavanaugh and Ford was one of the most despicable things I’ve ever seen.
And if this kind of investigation was even done on the Clinton Foundation, you’d have a stack of indictments that would reach the sky.

According to ABC, there will be no more indictments of anyone. Apparently like other far left news media, they are getting the leaks. I blame the far left for making it all about President Trump when, in fact, it involved other people who were guilty.

President Trump is being much more careful who he has in government with him and that’s a good thing. Remember, he is not a politician so had no idea how many BAD people are in politics. Frankly, President Trump has a higher moral standing than most politicians in Washington!!

TS your comments mirror my thoughts to the letter. No matter what the SC report says TRUMP IS the same kind of criminal that Putin is. Its just that simple. We see what Trump has done right before our eyes can you imagine what he has done behind our backs. He will be impeached or voted out for a second term. This a certainty. The end of Trump is within sight

Puttin is the richest man on earth, does anyone see that sanctions on Puttin puts his wealth in jeopardy. Trumps election was very important to Puttin .Trump wanted the sanctions lifted so Puttins wealth and Power and his murderous control over his enemy the media who is attacking his corruption stays subdued. This is why nobody understood Trump love of Vlad.Trump is corrupt and has put Russia before America. It has zero to do with refreshing true feeling that Trump hates Mccain. Its Puttin that hate McCain who has worked tirelessly to controll and punish Puttins crimes and this is the real reason Trump hates McCain as McCain is what Puttin could not control, but Puttin could and does control the Trump family.Your President has been comprmised

Re: Open letter to Alan Chartock

March 22, 2019

Dear Alan Chartock,

As a disabled Veteran and person who has mental illness, I learned from many professional mental health providers that there is no causal link between people who have mental illness and violence. Rather, people who have mental illness are more likely to be the victims of violence than people who do not have mental illness. In fact, many people who have mental illness who work at their path of recovery are non-violent or harmless.

Evidenced-based mental healthcare is work for patients with mental illness. When I receive mental health treatment, I work at my path of recovery with my mental health providers and peers. I have learned to not have negative thinking, but rather, the only way to work on my mental health symptoms is to have positive thinking. When I have problems, difficulties or troubles, I know not to blame my mental illness. I understand that my path of recovery is not free of obstacles, and that I may not always succeed every time, but I will always move forward.

The tragic violence that you, Alan Chartock, wrote about has nothing to do with people having mental illness! People who are violent make that choice. People who are non-violent also make that choice.

To be clear, I disagree with how you depict people with mental illness. I believe you should write that there are many good people with mental illness who work non-violently at their recovery with their mental health providers and peers.

As for religious and racial hatred and conflict, I believe the answer is to fight against extremism. We should all tolerate and accept our religious and racial differences. The problem with religion and race is that cultural conflicts are deeply ingrained in all of our world’s many societies. Indeed, religion and race are the bases for war, colonialism, and our current inequitable economic systems.

If I had political power, I would implement public policies that would educate people about mental healthcare. I would let the public know that people with mental illness who work at their path of recovery are non-violent or harmless. I would also speak out against extremist ideologies that cause people to choose violence. Aside from extremism, I would implement programs that end the growing underclass and the injustices caused by poverty.

Dan, former Mayor Ed Reilly died and remember him well. The Obituary says that he loved politics, and did, but one of the most interesting traits about Ed was he was a Historical genius, who knew every nook and cranny about Pittsfield History. To bad we never had the chance to see him on radio or the media, he was a really interesting individual whom I respected for that.

Condolences to his family.

“Edward Reilly, former Pittsfield mayor, dies at 69”
By Tony Dobrowolski, The Berkshire Eagle, March 22, 2019

Pittsfield — Edward M. Reilly, who served three terms as Pittsfield mayor in the 1990s and was known for his love of politics and dedication to the city, has died at age 69, city officials confirmed Friday.

The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Reilly, the city’s 33rd mayor, occupied the corner office from 1992 to 1998. A lawyer, he also served as a city solicitor. Reilly was appointed to that position by then-Mayor Charles M. Smith in 1983, the year after he graduated from the Western New England College School of Law.

During his last term as mayor, Reilly decided to run for state Senate but later dropped out of the race, citing his mother’s illness and his own back problems. He ran for mayor again as one of 10 candidates in 2001, but was defeated in the preliminary election.

After leaving politics, Reilly served as town counsel for several Berkshire municipalities as a member of the Boston-based municipal law firm Kopelman & Paige.

“Certainly on behalf of myself and the city of Pittsfield, I extend to Mayor Reilly’s family our sincere condolences,” said Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer. “While I didn’t know him well, I respect and admire all the mayors who came before me.”

Pittsfield attorney P. Keyburn Hollister served as city solicitor before Reilly was appointed to the position. Reilly interned under Hollister in the city solicitor’s office during his final year in law school.

“He loved politics,” Hollister said.

She remembered Reilly as a friendly, outgoing person.

“He was dedicated to the city,” Hollister said.

Reilly, a Pittsfield native, was the son of Dorothy Dow Reilly and William Reilly, who ran a variety store at North and Wahconah streets for 33 years before his father died in 1968. Reilly’s father had seven brothers, four of them priests.

Reilly graduated from the former St. Joseph’s Central High School, where he was a member of the debate team. He received an associates degree with honors from Berkshire Community College in 1970 and then graduated from the University of Massachusetts two years later with a bachelor’s degree in history.

Lacking the money to go directly to law school, he originally enrolled in graduate school at UMass to study sociology, but dropped out after one year.

“Sociology wasn’t concrete enough for me,” Reilly told The Eagle in 1983. “It was too theoretical.”

Reilly then managed a package store for eight years before being appointed contract manager for the city of Pittsfield’s Community Development Office in September 1982.

In 1978, he began going to law school three nights a week at Western New England in Springfield. Due to that pace, it took him four years of night school and two summers to earn his law degree cum laude.

According to Eagle archives, during his three terms as mayor, Reilly was known as a micromanager who paid close attention to the minute details of city business. A number of projects began under his administration, including the renovation of the Central Block on North Street, which was completed during the first term of his successor, former Mayor Gerald S. Doyle Jr.

Other highlights during his tenure included the purchase of the former England Brothers building on North Street, which now serves as the headquarters of Berkshire Bank’s Pittsfield operations, the construction of the plaza outside City Hall and the construction of the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center.

During his administration, Reilly also formed the first Citizens Advisory Committee, established as a means of easing tension between the police and Pittsfield’s black community, according to the NAACP’s Berkshire branch.

Mayor Reilly knew budgets,he knew Pittsfields history,he knew how hard it was for people to pay their taxes.Mayor Reilly could not relate to gated neighborhoods or cocktail parties. He was the most interesting person to speak about our City and its history.Mayor Reilly was Pittsfield and he talked often about how raising taxes affected people. He was so truthful in his budgets you knew it hurt he felt his budgets personally. Pittsfields free cash was at 12 million in the 90s and he was very reluctant to use it for budgets. He considered it a disaster fund only to be used under dire situations.I thought he was Pittsfields best and most inteligent Mayor who loved his Pittsfield. He was a poor man’s mayor.

Dear Planet,

I was saddened to read about Mayor Reilly’s passing at what I now consider a young age, 69. His obituary was interesting in that it illustrated how one advances from lower economic status to higher. I would imagine that his family instilled in him the values of hard work in achieving a goal. As someone who works in Pittsfield and who lived in the Berkshires as a youngster, I despair at the erosion of the middle class. Sadly, I see no light at the end of the tunnel. Here is a link to a 2001 Brookings Institution analysis that speaks to poverty and behaviors that perpetuate poverty. https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-behavioral-aspects-of-poverty/

Work! It’s good for alll of us.
This reminds me of a story a friend told me about a woman on her Facebook whose surgeon husband was suffering from cancer. He was apparently a lovely man. Surgeons make good money. When the news struck the wife promptly went to Facebook begging for an astounding sum of money – 40k. I have no idea what the money was for, but it stuck me as immensely vulgar. That is Pittsfield ‘class’. You might say well, why should this woman ‘get a job’ like the poor SOBs getting offered $15 to do whatever. Maybe that 40k was for health bills? Poor people get those too. My point is that some people are treated as disposable and others are on a vulgar pedestal. Disclaimer: I generally find begging for money on FB when you are wealthy (including those Trust Fund kiddos and their missions) to be the lowest. Yes, get a job, like e eryone else. It’s good for you.
