BOOKER ‘CAN’T STAY AWAY’ FROM PUSHING MORE GUN LAWS, EVEN THOUGH MORE WILL DIE

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY MAY 13, 2019) — “I can’t stay away from this.”

That’s how Sen. Corey Booker, D-N.J., justified his recent call for draconian new anti-gun legislation. As if words on paper — “laws” in their most elemental sense — can affect the human heart. Gun violence exists not because of the scarcity of laws but because of the abundance of anger that acts upon human will.

Of course he “can’t stay away.” He and 20 others presidential candidates vying for the party’s presidential nomination have been trying to “out left” each other, not realizing or not caring that in doing so, they play right into the hands of The Donald, making the Oval Office’s incumbent a certain winner in 2020. There Trump sits, like the Cheshire Cat, smiling and smirking.

Booker also couldn’t stay away, not with two more mass shooting (Georgia, Colorado). Mass shootings are good for business if you’re a progressive, what with political expedience being what it is. Whereas most of us react with abhorrence to mass shootings, these events provide room on the “ban guns” bandwagon  for Booker and company. Ah, but they mean well.

The former mayor of Newark has put forth a “comprehensive” gun control program that would, among other provisions, call for universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons, licensing, and registration. It isn’t clear if Booker’s legislation would require recitation of “The Pledge of Allegiance” and the singing of “Kumbaya.” To give more separation from his Democratic rivals, Booker sought to give the issue more gravitas by comparing gun control to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s.  Give him an A+ for creativity, at least.

The do-gooders who indulge in the fantasies of “gun control” are a fanciful lot. Let’s examine some facts:

  • Gun laws increase homicide rates. Washington, D.C.,  Chicago, IL, both saw gun violence skyrocket after passing the toughest gun laws in America. Same in Mexico, where legal possission of firearms is drastically restricted. Mexican gun laws keep people from defending themselves, assuring drug cartels, armed to the gums, a form of invincibility. Since 2007, there have been 160,000 gun murders related to drugs.
  • The Crime Research Prevention Center says that 99% of all the public mass shooting since 1950 have occurred in “gun-free” zones.
  • Research by the Center for Disease Control shows that between 1993 and 2003, gun ownership rose 56%. In that same time, gun violence dropped 50%.

Criminals do not obey laws. Restrictive gun laws only keep citizens from defending themselves.

THE PLANET grew up in a household with a gun cabinet — locked, by the way. Dad owned a number of rifles as well as a handgun. He showed his kids how to care for, shoot, and respect these weapons. He took us target practicing in the woods and made sure we knew the rules of gun safety. We were better off for this knowledge.

Bottom line is that the more Corey Booker, Kamala Harris, and the rest of the Dem 21-pack play “Can you top this?” with their fairy tales about gun control, the more people will continue to die at the wrong end of a pulled trigger. Ah, but try telling that to the denizens of the ‘hood.

How’s dis for comprehensive fun legislation?

If ya possesses a gun without a license, mandatory minimum 5 years in da slammer.

If you you shoot someone with it, and it ain’t self defense, 15 years in da slammer.

If ya kill someone with it, ya go away for life.

Oh I forgot- progressives are against mandatory minimums, because it’s all about restorative justice and trauma informed prosecutions.

p.s. Spartacus sickens me as much as Granny Warren, and Newark’s a shithole.

Worked out so well in Venezuela, as it crumbles under the socialist gun control laws that stripped citizens of their weapon owning rights. Creative ways to run people over with vehicles and throwing rocks seem to be the weapon of choice. Maybe the cash we get for our weapons can be used to pay for the new tote bins.

Mayor Mazzeo needs to provide a large police department by reducing our school department. McCandless hires 25 new positions ,are you kidding me.The mayor and Marchetti support all these new positions .When you have a failed verbal violence and intimidation policy no amount of new positions work.

that’s a great point. McCandless should be exploring other options to get the ISS kids out of Herberg and into another location away from the kids that attend school with intentions to learn. The policies need to be enforced and kids as well as parents should be held accountable. It’s not rocket science, just requires some balls.

Cory Booker is saying out lout what is supported by all of the Democrats running for president.

Taking guns is part of a socialist society because under socialism government has all the money and power and the citizens must become totally dependent on big government. There are few individual rights since it’s all about the collective. Venezuela confiscated all guns from its citizens in 2012. Now that Venezuela has become totally corrupt, the citizens are helpless while their government is watching them starve.

“The only reason he brought me Pampers was that it had been three days and our street hadn’t been plowed,” she said. “I have five kids and, trust me, I don’t just run out of Pampers. All we wanted was for him to plow our streets. It’s about knowing how to manage a city.”

Sound familiar? It’s all about the far left agenda. The practical aspects of managing government was beyond the abilities of Cory Booker. It’s the same for all of the Progressive politicians here in Pittsfield whose main goal has been promoting the far left agenda while the city continues to deteriorate.

You can make the gun laws as strict as you want. Criminals will find a way to acquire a weapon. Remember criminals don’t follow the laws in the first place. How about putting more money into mental health facilities, etc and here’s a newsflash. Some people actually belong in jail. When the scales tip in favor of the criminals societies quality of life goes down, as it is now, especially in Pittsfield. Wake up people and vote these liberals and progressives out of office.

Dan, as a wise writer once said, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics! The numbers, or “facts” as you call them, come right from the NRA handbook, just as TONS of others come from the other side’s handbook. (Like that our 288 school shootings in the past year is like 50 times more than ALL of the rest of the 15 industrialized nations combined!)

Crafting stories denying any connection between gun access and gun violence is really akin to crafting stories denying climate change because it snowed near North Adams yesterday. Common sense clearly shows that children are being killed en masse in our schools, undeniable, that they are being mowed down by automatic weapons, undeniable. Other counter measures, like more & better security and arming EVERYONE to forestall violence (that is truly a warped idea…how did that work out in the old west?) have not worked. Statistics aside, using common sense, doing away with access to that class of weapon, just making them unavailable, would seem like a logical thing to try, wouldn’t it?

Kinds are indeed being mowed down in schoo,s. And I am not gonna engage I. Your ridiculous “technical arguement” (that they are not automatic weapons but semi-automatic, the difference in deaths per second is marginal) because that only distracts from the point; owed down is a precise characterization.

Take comfort in that a Mazzeo administration will yield no different crime-fighting programs or solutions than her predecessors.

Mazzeo’s been on the Council the last umpteen years; all she can brag to is crime in PIttsfield is worse now than when she took office. She has no answers or solutions to anything she can’t relate to. Silk-stockings or not, she not right for the corner office.

Mazzeo’s a has-been whose only legacy is rubber-stamping all of Bianchi’s failed initiatives and objecting to Tyer’s every initiative. There’s no beef to speak of or chew on (other than what’s on her zillion dollar BBQ-gas-grill).

And the phone call between Mazzeo and Harrington, written extensively on this discussion platform, never happened.

And that’s the bottom-line!!

Fact check: Even Harrington does not deny the phone call took place between her and Harrington. What’s at issue and should be of grave concern is whether political threats from the now DA were made. Dan reported that they were. The DA denied it.

There were no threats made to Mazzeo from Harrington.

The entire incident was a hoax. It was manufactured by a few devious minds determined to undercut or undermine an opponent’s campaign. . . . It could be one of many reasons why The Berkshire Eagle didn’t give it a whisper.

So posits the narrative that sought to counter Harrington’s Williams College sexual assault claims.

And that’s the bottom-line!!

I don’t blame you for not reading the Eagle but the facts from 10/21/18 prove otherwise:
Race for Berkshire district attorney enters final stretch
…Most recently, Pittsfield City Councilor Melissa Mazzeo has publicly accused Harrington of threatening her political future in a September phone call.

Harrington denied ever making such a threat.

Mazzeo said she received a call on Sept. 18 from Harrington, who she said accused her of running Caccaviello’s write-in campaign.

When Mazzeo said she wasn’t running it, but has supported Caccaviello from the beginning, Harrington allegedly brought up her political aspirations in a threatening tone.

“When and if you chose to do something in the future, you’re going to need support,” Mazzeo quoted Harrington as saying.

Harrington indicated that support won’t be there, Mazzeo said.

The details of that conversation, which wasn’t recorded, have been reported by a local blog, “Planet Valenti,” and later radio stations.

Harrington has insisted that she never made such a threat.

Dan . . . you fell into Mazzeo’s hoax.

No one should report on a phone conversation unless both parties attest to its contents.

It was a hoax, and the Planet was used to propagate it upon vulnerable, anti-Harrington readers, and to a larger extent – county (undecided and Republican) voters.

As you all know by now I’m certainly no fan of Harrington’s, but Mazzeo’s untruth proved to be just that – a big fat untruth!!

You were used, Dan . . .

. . . and that’s the bottom-line!!

The gist of the conversation was Caccaviello is a morally bankrupt criminal district attorney. The Williams college sexual assault crisis and scandal are not a hoax.

Much like telling a child not to touch a stove because it’s hot, your not threatening the child by making them aware of the obvious outcome of getting burned.

If Mazzeo had headed Harrington’s advise she would not have the stain of supportimg a protector of criminals, hindering her political future.

Mazzeo took what seemed to be a friendly suggestion. Caccaviello spun it into a threat.
Most likely on Caccaviellos suggestion, as that’s his proven predictable pattern of intimidation by manipulation of facts.

Melissa should’ve said thank you, and chose better friends

In case you are wondering where our illustrious DA is this week, instead of staying home and learning how to do the job, see below.
Dan, please look into this boondoggle. The sponsor of this trip is ultimately the Tides foundation, which provides radical activist funding to even the smallest groups so they can remake society in their image. It works by lending its tax-exempt status to another organization. It may not being illegal but it’s f’ing wrong. BTW, Portugal is always lauded for its innovative drug policy which never really changed anything that wasn’t being done already. Once again, where is the Eagle? Then again, who would notice when she wasn’t on the job?

U.S. Prosecutors Visit Europe to Learn From Drug Decriminalization Efforts There
U.S. Prosecutors Visit Europe to Learn From Drug Decriminalization Efforts There
Boston, MA– A group of over 20 U.S. prosecutors, including Boston’s Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins, will be touring Portugal and Germany this month to learn about their criminal justice systems and the impacts of drug decriminalization, reports Marijuana Moment. Also attending from Massachusetts is DA Andrea Harrington of Berkshire County.

In a press release about the trip, Rollins stated: “The evidence is clear that our country’s decades-long approach to incarceration is not working. We need to look for innovative solutions to deliver more sensible approaches – and a paradigm shift away from punitive responses – that our communities are demanding.”

Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001. Since then, the country’s incarceration rates have gone down and public health measures have gone up now that drug abuse is treated like a public health issue instead of a crime. Germany also attempts to find solutions other than prison for drug offenders, particularly for young people, with a focus on treatment and rehabilitation rather than punishment.

While on the trip, the prosecutors will visit courts and health service providers; tour prisons and treatment facilities; and meet with law enforcement leaders, judges, public health officials, international experts and individuals with experience in the criminal justice system.

With this context, our elected officials aim to bring back ideas from the success of these programs for how our country and local governments can reduce incarceration rates and improve our criminal justice system. The U.S. population makes up only 5 percent of the world’s total population, yet a staggering 25 percent of all incarcerated persons globally are in the U.S.

Below is a tweet from Rollins while in Berlin:

The trip was organized by the U.S. advocacy group Fair and Justice Prosecution. FJP Executive Director Miriam Krinsky said in the press release: “Elected prosecutors around the [U.S.] are grappling with how to redefine justice and shrink the footprint of the justice system, while making communities safer and healthier. They are shifting away from punitive criminal justice responses to substance use and mental illness and embracing smart and proven public health solutions.”

Some harm reduction strategies currently proposed in Massachusetts include the creation of safe injection sites, but U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling has made it clear that he would prosecute such centers under federal law, even if they became legal in the state.

Yet, in the decade since the laws were passed, firearm-related crime has increased dramatically. Time to shut down pctv, the shows are now advertising, political for the politicians and pandering for certain candidates, and venues as well as political money grab bag innuendo.

All City Council Members and Council members should be voted out. There should be an emergency takeover by another entity before we are the next Detroit. We are nearing bankruptcy, in my opinion. Something has to change real fast,it’s here. The tax rate was reduced at two cents, with the homes and water rates going skyward, unless you work for the schools or city, you aren’t part of the equation.

How many brave Americans were needlessly wounded, died or functionally incapacitated in Viet Nam? How many more in Iraq or Afghanistan?

How many Americans will the grim reaper harvest in Trumps phony Iranian war? I hope our allies refuse to participate in the insanity. God Bless us all if he goes through with this.

You make a huge point. I doubt it even occurs to these people as they eat their rib eyes that there are others less fortunate. And some of those people worked hard all their lives and do not deserve having to support the largess of the power crowd. Very selfish and insensitive.

They are no better than the president

Terry Kinnas spoke before the CC meeting tonight, questioning the legality of the Pittsfield School’s plan to recruit black teachers from N.C. I couldn’t agree more. He also noted that the schools are receiving an extra $4 mil from the state, and school choice students are leaving PPS to the tune of $5 mil.

City taxpayers are being financially hammered by the failing school district. When will significant cuts be made in their budget? When will serious discussion occur about consolidation?

Consolidate and get control of school bullies,Yon should recruit local kids to come back to Pittsfield by removing the kids who bully teachers.Yon does not need a penny more to run this sysrem, the money is in the system to be saved.Take Crosby off line.Take Hibbard off line,Take Stearns off line.
