PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION JUNE 28-30, 2019) — The time has come again for THE PLANET to dish some “inside baseball.”

This site has grown beyond our expectations. It has done so for one reason: content. Over the years, we have covered and uncovered stories local media didn’t dare touch. On the stories they did report, we have provided unique takes and insights based on a career in the business and the information from key sources in many different areas of public and private life. We have offered ideas as a stimulus to the discussion, debate, and deliberation required for the democratic process to have a chance of succeeding.

We have resisted offers to go “commercial” through advertising, paid subscriptions, or a combination of both. First, THE PLANET was not designed to be a revenue center. Second, it would taint the coverage. We know, having experienced first hand how commercial media works. Actually, we’re in it as a public service, the way someone might run for office or volunteer to deliver meals to the elderly.

One of THE PLANET‘s earliest decisions concerned comments. Would we allow them or not? Our consultants argued both sides, and well. It was an easy choice, though. Over the years, our readers, listeners, and viewers have come to know our support of First Amendment freedoms. We take free speech seriously, so THE PLANET decided to allow public feedback.

That being said, freedom to comment — as we’ve noted before — comes as a privilege not a right. This privilege has to be earned. The vast majority of readers “get it.” Commentators generally keep in good taste, advance the discussion, and contribute positively (even the negative comments, when presented right, make addition by subtraction). Then there’s tiny population of idiots: They are a cancerous presence, because their instability draws others as bad or worse.

The problem has defeated nearly all other local media, with the online Eagle and iBerkshires not allowing feedback and local radio limiting talk to mind-numbing puff-‘n-stuff. THE PLANET, alone, provides the last refuge for those who cherish a public hashing out. We have done this by monitoring carefully what gets placed or attempts to get placed here. Our new algorithmic security system — a robotic Horace Greeley, as one wag put it — has worked flawlessly, greatly limiting the nut-jobs while boosting readership. The malcontents and kooks have a much harder time, and it’s going to stay that way. Fortunately, they are tiny in number and less-than-zero in effect.

It’s going to stay that way.

With that, the floor once more is yours.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

Twood did do better than E,W&F on Friday, June 21 with the acoustic performance of Richard Thompson. What a talent and what great songs. Search his song Gethsemane. It could be the theme song of the left-behind GE laborer of Pittsfield. Powerful.

I hear ya Dan, but I gotta throw a bone to the wife now and then, in the interest of domestic tranquility. The show was a tad lame, starting at 0727 and done by 0903, then a two song encore, no warm up act. No doubt they were great when you saw them. Half these old bands have only half the original members or so, yet sometimes their good. Frampton was good a year or so back, and so was Jackson Browne, who rocked Tanglewood back in 79 I believe. Not much in the way of popular artists this year – Reba, Train, Pat Benetar and Melissa Ehtridge coming and of course the old salt James Taylor.

I heard The Who played there back in the day, and Bruce Springsteen when he was an up and comer. Any truth to that? Perhaps I’m having a Brian Williams moment and conflating Tanglewood with the old music Inn.

“Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there’s a time to change, hey, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star–
One without a permanent scar?
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

Now that she’s back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey, hey (mmm)
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there’s room to grow, hey, hey, hey (yeah)

Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
I’m afraid that she might think of me as plain ol’ Jane
Told a story about a man who was too afraid to fly so he never did land

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way?

And tell me, did Venus blow your mind?
Was it everything you wanted to find?
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken?
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you’re wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance, five-hour phone conversation?
The best soy latte that you ever had and me

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?

And tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

And tell me, did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar?
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself?

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

And did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day?
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na
And did you fall for a shooting star, fall for a shooting star?
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na
And now you’re lonely looking for yourself out there”

I saw Kamala Harris play the race card on foul mouth/pervert Joe!!!

She claimed she was in the 2nd “integrated” class at Berkley HS, to much applause to the left winged Parrots in the audience. She talked about being “bussed”.

Problem is, Kamala was born in 1964, and the 1st integrated class was in 1963. Did she attend as an infant? Or is Kamala playing the race card on creepy Uncle Joe?

Here is the 1963 yearbook. See any students of African decent? A few? A dozen or more?

She said she was 2nd integrated class at Berkley. HS and was “bussed”. 1964?

But that would make her 1 yr old? And the 63 yearbook has many Americans of African dissent.

All the Dem candidates say free healthcare for the illegal immigrants pouring into the country. Do you think that will be an incentive for more to come here? Along with drivers licenses, free college, and a basic income? Who wouldn’t want to come here by the millions? That means that the far left socialist utopia will fail much more quickly.

I am just skeptical of robotic algorithms. Google, facebook, twitter, youtube , et al ….use algorithms to censor rather than moderate websites. That is AL-Gore-Rythms, with a left winged bias. Algorithms are as good/bad as the people who made them.

First, thank you Dan for allowing our feedback.

Second, I agree with those who compared the request for bocce courts with pickle ball. The first group were taxpaying residents. The second group (for the most part) are not.

They bring none of their own money to the table and to my knowledge do not have a fundraiser going on.

This whole thing is outrageous! And while I support Mazzeo, she is dead wrong in her strong support for them. This could hurt her. She certainly won’t be getting votes from them. So what is her reason?

Fair point. How much did the city pay to display it’s “diversity” – how much did the photographer make, did it go out to bid, what employees were chosen and how and why were they? Could it help Tyer win re-election? and regardless, city charter should be changed to one mayoral term. Period.

@ProxyDate. I am a 100% service connected disabled Veteran who served our country honorably in the U.S. Army from October 1999 – the first week of July of 2001. I am proud of my military service, and I am grateful for the benefits and compensation I receive from the VA. I would like you to know that I tried to find a living wage job as an Army Veteran. Indeed, I walked the streets of Pittsfield (Mass) for over one year of my adult life many years ago without any success. I moved away from Pittsfield to Southern NH to live with my family in the Spring of 2004. During the Summer and Fall of 2008, the VA granted me service connection after over 7 years of denials. At that point, I was on food stamps, medicaid, and state/Social Security disability. In late-January of 2009, I used a VA home loan to buy a one bedroom condo unit where I still live today. When I look back at it all, I struggled for many years of my then young adult life. I was at risk of homlessness, chronically unemployed, and dependent of public assistance benefits before the VA recognized my status as a priority 1 Veteran. I am financially secure now, and I feel a sense of relief after years of tough luck, including my years living in the Pittsfield area.

Jonathan Melle

No. I have not been an inpatient in a mental institution, yet anyway. People don’t realize what I have been through in my life. My oldest brother died in a car accident when I was nearly 15 years old. My mom had cancer twice (1990, 2006). My dad was a Pittsfield area politician and community activist, which led me to be persecuted and bullied for years by his political enemies in Pittsfield. I was blacklisted from employment as a then young adult by the Good Old Boys who run Pittsfield politics. They even tried to jail me when I was 22 years old by making false and hypocritical accusations against me to the Pittsfield Police Department. I have been the target of vicious rumors, including about my mental health. I have been at risk of being homeless in my adult life. I have been chronically unemployed and underemployed. I have been uninsured while suffering physical and mental illness. I am a lonely middle aged man, but I do have a good dog. I have been through a lot of struggles in my life so far. If it gets worse for me, maybe I will end up in a mental institution after all. Who knows?

Free healthcare for LIFE for illegal immigrants!! All the Democrat candidates are for this. Add in all the other freebies and illegal immigrants will be doing as well or better than American citizens who have lived here all their lives. Obtaining Drivers Licenses are easy for illegals and grueling for American citizens.

Basic income will favor illegal immigrants while middle class Americans will continue to struggle. Middle America doesn’t want freebies from the government, we want jobs. We want to keep our freedom and not be dependent on big daddy government.

For the last 40 to 50 years of elections that come 2 & 4 years apart we have heard the same old about if only elected I (we) will fix the education, healthcare, tax, race relations etc.. and here we are with the 2020 elections upon us and they are rehashing these same issues again. It seems they don’t want to fix these issues because they wouldn’t have much to run on and they always come up with with issues that aren’t or shouldn’t be issues, but make them crisis issues to scare and whip up and divide the people. Freebies is the buzz issue promoted this cycle. Go figure with the world in disarray.

Unfortunately the free for me type of people with the help of politicians have turned what you stated into a lifestyle of living. Years ago people were very quiet about getting assistance and now it is so different. I see people whip out plastic cards funded by the taxpayers and issued by the government like they have gotten them from working and good credit scores. I have no problem with people in real need for some help, but not to make it permanent for those able bodied who can work.

The wealthy usually pay a much lower rate since they don’t get money from “income” but from investments. Meanwhile payroll taxes, sales taxes, and property taxes make it harder for the lower classes to survive, literally. I don’t think the government should get more from the rich, but the they need to spend more rather than hoarding money. Not sure how to do it, but there must be something they want, like if they pay for public schools they can decide which teachers are hired or something

Do you know where your state reps were last Thursday night (6/27/2019)? They were all attending future candidate for Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s NoHo (or Northampton) fundraiser where suggested contributions range from $75 to $1,000.

If you don’t believe me, please click on the following link.

https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000016b-9749-d5f3-a1ef-97eb328e0000

State lawmakers listed on the fundraiser invitation included Sen. Adam Hinds, Rep. John Barrett III, Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier, Rep. Paul Mark, Rep. Smitty Pignatelli; and other attendees included District Attorney Andrea Harrington.

Maura Healey is a high-profile foe of President Donald Trump’s administration, which means she will use anti-Trump sentiments to propel her to high political office.

Many on this site agree that Pittsfield mismanages its money whether giving too much money to the schools or tax breaks to people who do not need them. How can these same people think it’s good that the far left will be mismanaging money across the country if any of these socialist candidates are elected for president? Free healthcare for life, basic income, and free college for illegal immigrants and all at taxpayer expense. That is unsustainable and will encourage millions more to illegally enter our country. Not to mention turning our country into Venezuela very quickly.

Last winter sets the Taxpayers up to an any cost goes, because it was a mild weather winter, yet, the biggest overage ever. And Mazze was right, where’s the numbers? The Commmisioner and evidentially the finance director or Mayor didn’t have it either.

She me advice, get it (the number) and tell us what we spent an extra Million or two on.

Dan,

Appreciate your comments and insights on the Tanglewood concerts. Were you at Woodstock- seriously asking?

Thanks for running this site for free. If you ever want to add advertising, I would certainly not mind a few ads.

I also was not at Woodstock. My Dad would not let me take the family car there but my friend Paul had access to one. However, he had to mow the lawn so we decided not to go. So we missed one of the great cultural events in the 20th century because of mowing the lawn.
