PLANET CALLS IT, RIGHT DOWN THE LINE: MAZZEO, TYER MOVE ON TO THE FINALS

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY SEPT. 18, 2019) — THE PLANET yawned along with 78% of the electorate yesterday for a sleep study known at the Pittsfield preliminary election. Every race turned out as we predicted.

With 6,078 voters of an electorate total of 27,893 (22%), you can say that None of the Above pulled off another landslide, unwinning 78% from those who didn’t bother, for whatever reason. We can leave the Ward races for another day, cleavered, you might say, and tell you that in the mayoral bigs, Melissa Mazzeo topped Linda Tyer for Win and Place, 2,860 to 2,571. The 300 vote difference is bout 5% of those who voted — not particularly significant but enough to give the Mazzeo camp the oak-leaf cluster.

The unlettered pair of Scott Graves (343 votes) and Karen Kalinowsky (281) were last seen sitting on the curbside in front of the First Street Cumby’s with dogs licking their sores. Graves later drilled holes in the bottom of his sailboat. Kalinowsky watched Harpo Marx pull a Gookie. Do you see why, once and for all, why THE PLANET told you to ignore these wannabees. In a locked-up town such as the Pitts, you can’t take such “candidates” seriously. All the two did was help force taxpayers to fund a prelim.

Every now and then, someone calls for a city manager form of government to address what is a broken system (or are you happy with 22%?). Forget that, we say. THE PLANET would prefer something more absolute such as Divine Right of Kings. Who says the Founding Fathers got it right when they established a constitutional republic. Nice in theory, but hopelessly outdated in 2019. We might also recommend from the menu Dictatorship, benevolent or otherwise. This solvent choice would eliminate the need for elections entirely.

———- ooo ———-

Now Mazzeo and Tyer move on to the finals of Dancing with the Stars. An early analysis of ward turnout (3 and 4, as usual, dominating) gives the early edge to Mazzeo. Tyer took 3A (262-229) and 4A (284-221). Mazzeo won 3B (327-233) and 4B (337-302). Mazzeo also scored decisively in the west side, taking 6A, 6A, and 7B. Topping an incumbent mayor is a decent achievement, one that will, if played right, serve as a springboard in the weeks ahead, especially with fundraising.

There’s much more to say about Campaign ’19, but not now. THE PLANET turns the talking stick over to you. Let us know how you read these results. By the way, iBeserkshire and The Boring Broadsheet each had stories on the elections. They pulled in a grand total of 0 — zero — comments, combined. Folks, there’s only one media site that people turn to, and it’s right here. Candidates, the smart ones, know it. Readers, the smart ones as well, know it, too.

We look forward to your analyses.

A good call Dan ! While I agree with you on several points the Graves, Kalonowsky thing shows a couple of things. The fact that two outside the mainstream candidates ran and gathered more than the usual 150 fringe says something. Melisa has her work cut out for sure but she doesn’t seem to fear a microphone, a camera or mind asking questions. Is going to be tough to wake the electorate up in November but it can be done.

Take all the anti Tyer votes and Mazzeo won by 1000 votes.Tyer is in trouble. If the poor people of Pittsfield turn out Mazzeo walks easily into the Mayors office.Taxes and safety……When Highway is 3 million over it’s a scandle. When your new jobs created are only school jobs numbering 35 is your accomplishment and that because Behnke,Curtis, Mccandless continue Massimiano,Amuso ,Eberwiens failure of epic problems of behaviors.

Mazzeo should now work Morningside and Conte schools for their votes on Safe neighborhoods.Have a neighborhood rally in each school for Safety in the streets.Cut tree limbs, turn up street lighting.Sweep those streets every week cut weeds.Paint lines in the road. This area is the real Pittsfied. The southeast is more Lenox not urban at all……Let’s really do something for poor hard working families in the hood.Lets not worry about Hancock Shaker village like Tyer and Ruberto do. Lets work on the clean, safe streets Slumlords are Pittsfields unspoken problem.Lets solve that by harassing th eff m.Get the health department moving on the business of renting.

I would like to thank Scott Graves and Karen Kalinowsky for stepping forward and giving people other choices. Either one of them would have been better than Tyer. And my guess is that they both care more about the future of the city than either Tyer or Mazzeo who are both going to have special interest mouths to feed.

“Divine Right of Kings?” “Dictatorship?” A bit jaundiced Dan or what? Pretty sad that things have gotten so bad that even those choices look better than what we’ve got?

The only way things improve and change happens is when the other 78% that have the time to sit at home on their collective rear ends complaining, get up off those fat fannies and vote. If that’s too much effort, maybe it is time to get rid of the mayor and all the councilors and just go to a city manager (dictator) to professionally run the place like the business that it really is.

So now we have a horse race, and for a incumbent 4 year mayor bragging of strong leadership and real results, including hundreds of jobs, Tyer did not have a strong showing, at all. Mazzeo did way better that I thought she would, and she will most certainly pick up the two stooges’ votes. Mazzeo better not rest on her laurels, and she should put the “i’ve not yet begun to fight” quote into action. She especially needs to get serious about public safety. She should demand a management study of the police department instead of buying into the need for 120 cops line. She also should campaign on the need for a management study done of the school department and a school building needs assessment. And she should promise she will start cutting the overall budget. Tyer raised it 10 percent in 4 years. What is Mazzeo projection for next 4?

Tyer better talk Harrington off the bridge in Selma, because it’s a bridge too far, and get her back here to work collaboratively, aggressively, and tirelessly on the latest homicide!!!!!! What a joke! Tyer should be ashamed aligning herself with such incompetence. Not a single pittsfielder believes Tyers bullshit about Harrington working tirelessly and aggressively to fight crime. She wants to coddle criminals not incarcerate them.

And I want the truth about this phantom jobs report. Where are the facts to back up 400 plus jobs? Here’s to you, Missy Mazzeo, the city turns it’s Desperate eyes to you – Are you going to take it to Tyer, are you going to demand real answers instead of fluff n nutting, are you going to fight for we the people?

And I want to know how much Tyers pension will be if re-elected and just how long she thinks she would like to be mayor.

Could Mazzeo bring Harrington back to some common sense thinking about crime in this area? I doubt it because the far left is so fanatical in its thinking, but we know that Tyer will not even try. I will be forced to vote for Mazzeo for that reason alone, not that I think she is a great candidate, but once again, the lesser of two evils.

I also second Police Report’s call for an independent audit of city spending , especially dpw, and support a management study of police and indeed support his call to look into a city manager form of government. But Police Report, why are you calling for DOJ involvement in police? I don’t think there’s any corruption or civil rights violations.

A good example of why audits, new audit firms, and forensic audits are important. Why GAAP best practices indicate communities should rotate audit firms.

Deborah Ball of Great Barrington, she worked as a in the treasurer collectors office for years. Only after an audit by a different firm than the Town normally used did they find problems going back to at least 2012. Every year that Town had an audit, every year they “passed” and were certified until 2018. So six or more years worth of audits were wrong.

There’s a huge difference between perfunctory “get it done” audits and targeted audits of a department or forensic audits.
There have been a number of times things have been missed for years, only to be found out by mistake or because of a staffing change. Small changes, like a mandatory vacation can uncover fraud.
There have been similar incidents in any number of cities and Towns I the commonwealth.

Objectively, may I point out, the DA does not investigate crime.

She relies on the police and investigators to solve crimes and gather enough evidence to win at trial.

I know we all give her a hard time, but I think the frustration is misplaced.

The DA is responsible for the investigation of all homicides. The best thing for all of us is if she remains in Selma.

PoliceReport

First off let’s be clear, by title DA Andrea Harrington is the top law enforcement officer in the county.
Secondly she directs an office with a budget and, since she serves no purpose in court as she does not prosecute any criminal cases, her next big strength should be resource and office management.
Now it may be a new concept to her as she’s never managed any employees, but that supposedly is her strong point and “where I (she) shines.”
So following the resource and budget, she also has investigators from PPD, Sheriff’s Department, and the State Police assigned to her office. She can further ask, budget, and assemble a task force of multi jurisdictional law enforcement agents/officers/technicians and pay for them out of her budget and authorize overtime paid out of her budget.
Where does this all join, if you are spending money on political junkets and not in your office and not actually prosecuting crime because you are an “office manager” all that money you waste is money not going to crime fighting.
For whatever the failings of Her predecessors, not one came with less courtroom experience and all were actively trying cases.
Look at the caseloads and staffing of prior DA’s compare that to today. She can’t claim to be “actively investigating cases” if she’s not there. Every time DA Andrea Harrington isn’t in the office, isn’t in court, every trip she takes that has no value to Berkshire County, she is wasting both the money she spent on the trip and the money she’s being paid to do work in the office. Did DA Andrea Harrington ever spend her money on trips to Portugal to investigate restorative justice and drug programs? Did she ever fly down to Selma, or any other distant jurisdiction to march in solidarity with other legal professionals when it wasn’t being paid for by taxpayers?
Lawyers in private practice are used to the concept of billable hours, how many hours of actual work do you think she could bill for in all of these junkets? Not very many.

So I would say I disagree in that she takes credit for the successes of her office so she should also accept the failures of her management style.

And how do us Kapanskis get the records to show how much her trips cost us taxpayers and what her accomodations are? Because you seem to have knowledge in this area.

Just read Tyer’s quote in The Boaring Broadsheet –
“I think this is a contest between proven leadership and a record of accomplishments, and untested ideas.”
If she deep down believes this, she’s done. I think it’s a contest between an incumbent, who has no choice but to run on her record, and a challenger who never held the office, but was a councilor for years, and wants to do things differently because what’s been tried has not worked. Kinda like when Tyer ran against Bianchi. What’s the difference really? The difference, as PR has pointed out, is that the city is way worse off under 4 years of Tyer, versus the 4 years of Bianchi that Tyer campaigned against. Tyer’s “proven leadership” has led to a 10 percent budge increase, hundreds more in property taxes, millions more pissed away on the school department which should be eviscerated, and millions more to the police department with nothing to show for it but a popsicle wagon and a shotspotter, and a cool million in overtime. All this while she had a compliant council, for the most part. Oh, and a parking mess. Where is the crime reduction Madam Mayor? How many shootings in your 4 years compared to Bianchi? How many homicides? How many private sector jobs created? Why don’t you give us some real numbers? Your cardboard card accomplishments are a joke. Any how many real jobs that are not tax payer funded or subsidized? And then you get in bed with Harrington, a known get out of jail card carrying lightweight, instead of backing the law and order DA? That stupid stance alone should cost you the election.

PoliceReport

Mazzeo could easily run on a single question, are things better?
She could take Mayor Linda Tyer’s own words against Bianchi and turn them back onto Mayor Tyer.

Crime is it better or worse? Not just statistically but do you feel safer in your neighborhood?

Jobs? Is the job situation better or worse? Was it worth $3 million dollars to bail out the 5 jobs the Beacon created? Do your job prospects really look better? Are those living wage jobs flowing into Pittsfield?

Education, with all the money spent are your children getting a better education? Do you think their education will get them into college or prepare them for the work force?

Taxes, there’s been much ado made about the two cent lowering of the tax rate, did you pay more in taxes? Did your tax bill go up?
Did your water and sewer bill go up? Do you really think your property values match what you can sell your house for? Or did your property value go up so much that the two cent decrease in the tax rate was wiped out? Did your water and sewer bill wipe out any decrease in property taxes you might have received?
In looking around, at other communities, do you think you are getting the value per dollar they are in services, education, and public safety?
If you think everything is going well, that this is the best a mayor can do in four years, then vote for Linda. If you are tired of the crime, the lack of real opportunity, the degradation of our educational system, vote for Melissa Mazzeo.

Most people I know will vote for Mazzeo. The question is, can Mazzeo hold the line on the budget? Seniors and the working poor are struggling with the ever-increasing property taxes and the huge increase in water and sewer charges. Finally, I’d like to see a return to a 2 year term for mayor. If you get a dog, at least you could vote him/her out in a shorter time.

New “space” company coming to Pittsfield

Their DUNS 094141579

They list in many publications that they are a company over 500 employees.

At the height of their employment it seems they had 23 employees, now they have 15. They have a few jobs listed on their site, none of which seem to be in line with most of the population here. They’ve received one contract in 2018 for DoD work it was worth $125-128k
A number of their “employees” are “associate employees” meaning they are “contractors” who intermittently work for the company as “consultants” or “outside sales”.

I mention these things simply because there will be a press conference tomorrow by Mayor Linda Tyer where she plans to call this a “major employer”. She will say that this shows the “power of innovation” and the collaborative effort of stakeholders, her office, and, the red carpet team, and 1Berkshire. She also may talk about a new marketing position created at 1Berkshire.

“What I’m the most proud of is that I’ve been endorsed by the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus, which is a state organization that advances women in politics, so I’m proud to earn that endorsement through a competitive application and interview process,” said the mayor. “I’m also happy that I have the endorsement of several members of the city council who share the same values of collaboration and problem solving that I bring to this work every day.”

It’s a bit ironic that Mayor Linda Tyer talks about her endorsement by “competitive process and application” from the Women’s Political Caucus when just over a year ago DA Andrea Harrington made this threat.

“When and if you chose to do something in the future, you’re going to need support,” Mazzeo quoted Harrington as saying.

Harrington indicated that support won’t be there, Mazzeo said.
It’s one of the few things DA Andrea Harrington has said during the campaign that was true.

Most recently, Pittsfield City Councilor Melissa Mazzeo has publicly accused Harrington of threatening her political future in a September phone call.

Mazzeo said she received a call on Sept. 18 from Harrington, who she said accused her of running Caccaviello’s write-in campaign.

When Mazzeo said she wasn’t running it, but has supported Caccaviello from the beginning, Harrington allegedly brought up her political aspirations in a threatening tone.

“When and if you chose to do something in the future, you’re going to need support,” Mazzeo quoted Harrington as saying.

Harrington indicated that support won’t be there, Mazzeo said.

Wouldn’t you agree that a DA who makes threats should be reported for misconduct? I believe Harrington also was deceitful when asked about the incident. Ironically, she is stomping around with other DAs claiming we need “fair and just prosecution” and they’re the ones to deliver it.

If you look at it, it would seem highly plausible that DA Andrea Harrington would, as co-founder of the Berkshire Chapter of the MA Women’s Political Caucus, have the power and means to carry out the threat Mellisa Mazzeo accused her of.

DA Andrea Harrington, Helen Moon, and Lampiasi are all part of that PAC. It then begs the question, is that both legal and ethical? Is there a conflict of interest when an employer who works for the state, DA Andrea Harrington, has employees who work for the state and directly for her, Moon and Lampiasi also work for the chapter of her PAC she co-founded.
That seems like a huge conflict of interest.

If there’s any question where Linda Tyer’s outside Berkshire’s money is coming from, its via the WPC members.

So since there was a threat, and money involved in a political race and a denial of support (that actually came true) would that be a criminal violation of state campaign laws?

There is an entry above where Police Report references fraud in GT Barrington that was dug out by an independent audit. I would suggest that in Pittsfield there would be much more opportunity and possibility for financial wrongdoing. I would love to see a full blown campaign by the people (and any willing politicians or businessmen) to push for a forensic audit to begin right after the election.

And I would like to see in writing from dissenters why it is a bad idea (with their names attached) not some opinion piece in the Eagle. And I hope money is not one of the reasons because this mayor has found money for all kinds of fringe projects.

Can we start a poll her as to whom are for or against?

Oh the hypocrisy of the PPSD!

Just after McCandless announced that a 63- page Code of Conduct has been developed for all city schools – an article appears in the Beagle about PHS students participating in the “Global Climate Strike” on Friday by “standing in front of the high school screaming at passing cars about the dangers of climate change.” Then the students will proceed to Park Square for a noon rally.

And how will these students be reprimanded for skipping school on Friday?

And why will they be allowed to create a disturbance on school grounds, distracting drivers?

More nonsense and more proof, as if any was needed, that these young people are being brainwashed to believe far left politics. Will they all be calling each other “comrade” soon? Even grade school kids are being taught to be terrified that the world will be ending in 10 years.

That our coastlines will soon disappear even as far left
Obama and his wife just bought a 15 million dollar home near the shore here in Massachusetts. Aren’t they terrified they are throwing that money away? Oh, right, climate change destroying everything in 10 years is really a hoax to allow a government takeover by the far left. The elites know it is a hoax.

Right!

And little Johnny can’t read or perform basic math functions because he is busy studying about the leftists’ cause du jour.

And while AP classes are often not offered when too few students sign up…….African American classes “will be offered regardless of number of students signed up for the classes.” – Jason McCandless, Supt.

Get your kids out of the Pittsfield Public Schools!

Meanwhile a story in the Sept 12 Berkshire Eagle says that Lee public schools superintendent Howard Eberwein is going to resign Dec 31, (in the middle of a school year). The school committee asked him to stay because it would be hard for the district, but sounds like he is bailing anyway. Why and what’s up with that?

quick check:
Tyers campaign donations so far $20,240
$13,550.00 from outside Pittsfield – 65%
Smells like special interest $$ – low integrity and questionable motivation by donors – not good mix for Mayor

“When and if you chose to do something in the future, you’re going to need support,” Mazzeo quoted DA Andrea Harrington as saying.
DA Andrea Harrington indicated that support won’t be there, Mazzeo said.

Dan,maybe you could do an interview with Patrick Kavey as Lothrop has been on the ridiculous pctv morning show. I’ve know Pat for twenty years and not only do I know his character I know his ambitions,he wants to serve the taxpayers in Ward Six and give back to the Community,he’s very sincere. He’s young, energetic and serious, as well as smart like Dina Guiel.Oh, and he doesn’t bullshit like his opponent. Phone lines burning off he hook? What a buffoon.

Tyer does not oversee her department heads and Pittafield is number 1 in crime and at the absolute bottom in education. The Catholic church should reopen St.Joes high school.

Tyer has three plus so far and failed. Melissa will be a successful Mayor, she will be full of compromise which will be based on the will of residents as opposed to the last few Mayors special interests.

Melissa has her own agenda, that is why she wants to be a Mayor.

Also, keep Lothrop off the City Council, let’s give Patrick Kavey an opportunity!

Why would Mayor Linda Tyer, who received a $250 contribution from the MA Women’s Political Caucus on 8/2/2019 announce their endorsement a month and a half later?

Is this the same MA Women’s Political Caucus who’s Berkshire chapter was co-founded by DA Andrea Harrington?

This organization has no idea about the issues in Pittsfield or what a failure Tyer has been. It’s a sham hack organization with no credibility. Don’t forget, they endorsed Squeaky.

Yes! Harrington created the group to endorse herself. Then it endorsed Tyer who has just touted it as evidence she has support. The president is Moon and the whole thing is run my Giuel. It’s a travesty of a mockery of two shams.
