PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, ELECTION DAY, 2019) — As you go to the polls today, THE PLANET wants to share a story about crime in Pittsfield. As an issue, it rivals the budget.

It’s an issue that mayor Linda Tyer avoided during the campaign. By almost all measures, crime in Pittsfield has skyrocketed : murder, shootings, stabbings, beatings, drug trafficking — you name it.

During her 2019 “state of the City” address, Tyer mentioned pickle ball four times. Crime? Not once. The campaign has been the same. On her website, Tyer eschewed the word “crime,” instead referring to “Safer Neighborhoods,” including championing the $500,000 failure, Shot Spotter.

The Pittsfield Police Department’s official website reveals the extent to which chief Mike Wynn and Tyer are either deliberately obfuscating or don’t care. If you click on “News” (recent posts), the most “recent” is from Nov. 23, 2015. When THE PLANET clicked CityStat, a monthly digest of criminal activity, we find no crimes reported after October 2015. PPD Employment Opportunities shows the most “recent” job posted on July 15, 2015. When we tried to access the Community Crime Map, our server couldn’t find “the targeted resource” because the [site] “is not willing to disclose that one exists.” Re-read that.

Ask yourself, is that responsible action from the Administration? Is that open? Honest? Is that tolerable to you, the voter?

Here’s what Mazzeo says on her campaign site:

CRIME

If we do not control crime, the other three pillars [the local economy, schools, city services]will fall.

What solutions will I offer? On the day I enter office I will sit down with Chief Wynn to do what I cannot as a City Councilor. I will work directly with the Chief to establish true hot spot policing. Additionally, I will partner with all agencies necessary to help stop crime.

As opposed to the current administration’s claim of hiring more police, it’s about better using our existing resources. In Pittsfield, we will establish a patrol allocation plan where daily data can provide guidance to officers as to where they should be deployed. The real impact comes from deploying large number of police to areas of the city where crime is prevalent. Four years ago, then-candidate Linda Tyer incessantly berated the previous administration for ‘’their failure to keep us safe.” Four years later, crime rates have only increased. It leaves one to wonder, who is now to blame? I understand that the mayor is personally close to both Chief Wynn, as well as DA Andrea Harrington, but that closeness is causing the city to flail. We are failing because our leadership refuses to take definitive action. We deserve better.

So what will happen today. THE PLANET PREDICTS:

Turnout: 19,251

PLANET Endorses:

  • For Mayor, Mazzeo
  • At-large, bullet vote for Alex Blumin;
  • Ward 2, Kevin Morandi (unopposed);
  • Ward 4, Chris Connell;
  • Ward 5, Patrick Kavey.

As always, THE PLANET welcomes your thoughts.

Thank you for supporting Kenny. Helen Moon has no real job at the DA’s office – I suspect she is spending all her time in that office working on her campaign and job as city councilor as well as plotting AH’s political future. Berkshire County and residents of ward 1 deserve accountability. But unless you demand it, you won’t get it. Morandi is a good, hardworking person AS IS MELISSA MAZZEO! Glad we left Pittsfield 28 years ago- but I feel hopeful with Melissa as mayor.

Wasn’t it humorous when Moon made her campaign video and bragged about being a nurse and using her experience as such as a reason she should be counselor.

She couldn’t have jumped that ship fast enough when the DA gig came around> She’s a career politician and a hack. The ward deserves better

It was extremely telling how Moon wrote this letter and never mentioned she worked for the DA. Why doesn’t she want anyone to know? To the editor:
My name is Helen Moon and I am the Ward 1 city councilor. I want to start by thanking the voters of Ward 1 for electing me in 2017. It has been my honor to serve you in my first term.
As a registered nurse, I have learned to think critically, communicate effectively, and respond compassionately to my patients. Moreover, I stand up and advocate for my patients and their needs. These are the skills that I bring to my constituents in Ward 1. In a short time, I have submitted over 500 requests for services to the city on behalf of my constituents, responded to hundreds of emails and phone calls, and have spoken to many of you regarding your concerns and hopes for Pittsfield.
Additionally, in my first term, I have submitted 11 petitions to the City Council, all of which have passed. From traffic concerns from my constituents in Walden Village and Berkshire Country Meadows, to following up with permitting concerns regarding a commercial solar field with the residents on East Acres, to chipseal concerns from my neighbors on Kittredge, to planning a dance party fundraiser at Springside Park, I have given my time and energy to improving the quality of life for the residents and businesses in Ward 1. I work hard, I work collaboratively and I get things done.
My hope as the Ward 1 city councilor, what I strive to do with every vote, is to make decisions that protect and honor those that are currently here — our families, young adults and our seniors — while preparing our city for the future. And we can only do that when we work together.
Pittsfield is not without its challenges, but when we work as a community, I believe we can continue to move Pittsfield forward. And I respectfully ask for your vote again on Nov. 5.
Helen Moon,
Pittsfield

When you have a corrupt police department you have serious trouble. There are many good and dedicated officers on our police force but Wynn protected Dale Eason a rogue officer whose abusive behavior was well known in the department. He was “The most problematic officer in the department”.
Wynn was appointed chief by Tyer who went around civil service. Corrupt leadership.

Chief Wynn did not protect Dale Eason by any means. In fact he was openly hostile to Eason every day the two interacted. Chief Wynn actually tried to fire Eason, even when he knew it was a mistake.
I’m no fan of Eason but he was by far, not the most corrupt cop on the force.
His lawsuit and the city’s settlement seem to prove me right on that. That fight went all the way to the SJC, with settlement that was a $350k bill and Eason kept his pension.

Two of the most corrupt cops are still on the PPD.
A couple of them are gone or suspended pending criminal action but the worst are still there. Want to know why cops leave after a few years…better pay, better leadership, less corruption.
If you really want to know why drugs have taken such a strong foothold in the city, it breaks down to this:
Poor leadership and outright corruption.

Mayor Tyer was more engaged about pickleball than the budget crisis.2.1 million over budget in a 4 month snow season is 500,000 a month or 125,000 a week or 17,000 dollars a day over I repeat over the budget and she never noticed and to this day she will not speak to her complete mismanagement of a Snow removal line item.What was going on in the Mayors office if this did not get your attention.Why would anybody vote for this to happen again.There is a big story in that one line item and the Berkshire Eagle is complacent in a obvious story for them to dig into. MAZZEO would have asked the QUESTION.

There is only one choice for Mayor – Mazzeo.
Wards 6 & 7 had better start looking for ward reps in the NEXT election, as the current crop of candidates won’t cut the mustard.
Hopefully Blumin will win an at- large seat.

If Tyer truly cared about police or was serious about improving policing she would have initiated a real management study instead of just buying into the bs about 30 new cops needed. How many chiefs? How many Indians? Where to put em? What do they do?
More cops alone ain’t the answer Mazzeo. Do a management study and spend the Marijuana Money for a New Station (MMNS). Shut the useless website down, cops too busy fightin crime to update it.

The Berkshire Eagle endorses Linda Tyer for mayor. This means we need to vote for Mazzeo. The Berkshire Eagle endorsements are never in the best interests of the public. My election phone call last night said that Adam Hinds endorses Linda Tyer. That also did not impress me.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the PPD website remains stuck in 2015 but Chief Wynn manages to update his personal blog with incredibly long and detailed blog posts on a very routine basis?

https://victoryforce.wordpress.com/2019/08/31/installment-15-new-adventure-new-opportunity/

I hear he also has a separate blog dedicated purely to shitsu fighting but I just don’t have the time to read it.

It makes you wonder how he himself has the time to be such an avid blogger, traveller, college student, police trainer, and shitsu competitor when he is so busy protecting the people of Pittsfield….oh…wait…

Prior to 2016, their was nothing but a big, terrible mess left behind by the “Doyle debacle”, the “Hathaway hack”, the “Ruberto regime”, and the “Bianchi bust”. At 7:50 am, there were 15 people in line waiting to vote. Many cars piling into the parking lot. Busiest election day I’ve seen.
In ward 4 there was a poll sitter, off to the side of the checkin table with a duplicate voter roll. She was crossing off names as people checked in. Will she be rounding up warm bodies to vote under someone else’s name? Is this really legal? Can anyone request a duplicate voter roll and sit there to see who hasn’t voted? Seems wide open to election fraud. The state should institute photo i.d. voter cards – I know, it will never happen as the Dems have a war chest just to fight such a measure.
