PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION MARCH 20-2, 2020) — As the pandemic continues in what appears to be the end of the beginning and approach its middle phase with more suffering ahead, the local narratives get more strident. It’s ironic that at a time when the localities and its offices need cooperation and communication, Pittsfield citizens are getting too much of a blame game.

That’s THE PLANET‘s impression gets after hearing from various key constituencies, including state officials, city hall, medical personnel, and hospital trustees.

CITY HALL

The mayor Linda Tyer’s defenders insist she has been among the most pro-active in Massachusetts, showing exemplary leadership.

“[Tyer] was the first mayor to set-up a corona virus team,” one supporter said. “A few days after the governor visited, he set up his team.  Other mayors are calling Linda asking what she has done and why so they can take similar actions.  The governor must have been impressed.  We were the first community [to limit the] spread [of COVID-19] in the state.  Linda shut down schools then the governor followed suit for the entire state.  Do you think this is coincidence?  Maybe, but I think not.”

Another from Team Tyer told THE PLANET, “Linda doesn’t get all the credit, but her TEAM does.  Linda listens to what everyone on her team has to say, then makes the call.  Before she shut the schools down, the mayor had a plan in place to feed the school kids whose only meals come from the schools.  She has a plan to isolate the homeless if they become infected  There are so many things that need to be thought through, and she and her team are doing it. What they aren’t doing is going out there and tooting their own horn.  Linda just wants to get the job done and do it well.”

You will recall yesterday that Team Tyer blasted not just BMC but the state Department of Health.

Feel better now, do you?

———- ooo ———-

STATE SOURCES

Beacon Hill sources do not agree. Essentially they agree with the information shared on this board by Police Report, who transmits from an inside position. Police Report says:

Whatever Z Agent fed you the story that the Mayor reached out to the governor is feeding you a line of BS. It’s simply not true.

In the days, weeks, and month prior to the governor showing up, where was the mayor with her concern and expertise? The mayor had no substantive communication with the public prior to the governor’s visit. She was absent and out to lunch as usual. If she was so “on top” of the situation, why wasn’t it a joint conference with both parties speaking at the same single conference? Because Baker didn’t want to associate himself with her piss-poor performance.

Also I do not buy for one second that she was actively unaware of what was going on at BHS/BMC. At no point did she question them, bring any issues up with the public, sound any alarm. In fact, if you look back at her office’s response, all they did was parrot BHS propaganda. First rule of being concerned: You don’t help push out the propaganda.

At any time prior to the governor showing up, Tyer could have had her dog and pony show. She could have brought her A-team in and ignored the social distancing policies in effect at the time, and held that press conference. If she was concerned about the public, she could have initiated policies in advance of the State to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Lastly, where is the competence now? Why doesn’t the website work well? Why isn’t it updated? Where is her leadership and expertise now? You can’t manufacture something you don’t have, and she simply lacks the intelligence to actually do an effective job.

No. The reality is she got her ass handed to her in a number of very terse and direct phone calls from the governor’s office and was forced to act. Think about it this way; when has the mayor been effective at doing anything except giving away money to her cronies? Never. She can’t figure out trash cans. Do you really think she was ahead of the curve on this. Absolutely not.

A state source, Statie, agrees with THE PLANET‘s original reporting, that it took Baker’s office to send fire through the phone to get the mayor to act. Statie refuted the claim that Tyer acted first: “They’re saying that?! Really? Didn’t happen that way. [Tyer] was nowhere to be found. When we heard about the [happenings] at [BMC], we called. What alarmed us most was the lack of knowledge and preparation [from the corner office.] It’s not for her to criticize the [MDH] response. She has no claim on that one.”

This source also picked up on a point made above. Prior to every visit from either the governor of Lt. Gov. Polito, and any cabinet-rank official, the mayor would trumpet it with advance press releases and set up any number of photo-ops. Not this time. Statie says, “Why did we get the governor ‘suddenly’ showing up in Pittsfield. Oh, the mayor knew Baker was coming, but she didn’t want the word out, kind of like sticking your head in the sand and pretending you won’t be seen. She knew Baker was upset and wanted to keep it quiet. It’s funny. It’s almost like she thought if she didn’t say anything, no one would find out.”

MEDICAL SOURCES

This information is from “Joe Pinhead.” We know this source, have long ago vetted him, and know him to be one of the most informed and accurate. He has a top job for the medical division of a multinational corporation.

As a Healthcare Professional that travels both nationally and internationally, I as every other vendor MUST be registered with either Vendor Mate. Reptrax, symplr etc. (https://www.symplr.com/blog/six-reasons-why-hospital-vendor-credentialing-is-on-the-rise ) or any other nationally recognized vendor credentialing service. The purpose of this is to ensure that a healthcare facility can be certain who is gaining access to their facilities and further into the sensitive areas of the facility.

The credentialing agencies perform background checks and other security screening. A key component is they also ensure all who attempt to gain entry are properly vaccinated. It was about 4-6 weeks ago if not longer that all sorts of facilities and healthcare groups started demanding to know about flu-shots, lot numbers types, etc. I do not do business with BHS but I have seen a kiosk there for vendors to sign in, so I am making the assumption that they started getting notice as well (since they are the subscribers to the services).

We were asked each time we need access to patient care areas, even if we showed them proof the day before. We needed differing levels of proof for different items depending upon our business at that time. If I went and spoke to a cardiologist about our newest product yesterday and returned today to demonstrate a device in a patient for clinical trial ,I had a complete different set of required qualifications/ documents.

The credentialing agencies I mentioned above alerted/guided (what ever word you like) not only our company but the facilities that subscribe to them as well. That wold include BHS. We have been hearing about this pandemic for some time. The multitude of organizations and accrediting agencies have been telling us and providing guidance regarding this and other pandemics, which is what makes the action or inaction of Berkshire Health System mind numbing. When this passes, and it shall, they must be held to account. The answer cannot simply be one of funding either.

Certainly there has to be much concern at BHS over the “paper trail” to its handling of the situation. One hospital trustee joked about document destruction: “Forget ventilators. They [the BHS brass] wants to find all the paper shredders it can get.” Gallows humor, we know, but it underlies what appears to be a most troubling situation in the county’s only medical center. To make it more nerve-wracking is how city officials are blaming BHS and the hospital returning serve. Trustee: “Early this month we tried to set up a ‘summit’ of sorts with the mayor’s office. We couldn’t reach her, and she didn’t return our inquiries. The situation just died, faded out. We got no cooperation at all from the city.”

There also have ben reports of incompetent testing at BMC. Hardly the thing we need to calm frayed nerves. And ask yourself: Do you trust any official information coming either from the mayor or her Response Team? That said, a shout out and nod to Brian Andrews, a member of that team. He’s putting in long, workhorse hours — and staying in communication and sharing information. Where are the others? What are they doing? Why are they in hiding? Even after all that’s come down, do they still not get the seriousness of the situation? Brian’s too much of a stout fellow to complain, but how long can he keep going on a team of slackers? Other localities have their leaders holding DAILY press conferences and making their chief medical advisers available. The mayor of Pittsfield have a Response Team assembled as if it were a political action committee, nary a doctor in sight.

FROM JOHNS HOPKINS

JOHNS HOPKINS issued this statement:

Recently, the dissemination of misinformation has become an important global issue. While the spread of misinformation is not a new phenomenon, the emergence of social media platforms that connect networks of people, who often have similar opinions and cultural beliefs, has exacerbated and amplified this problem. Although misinformation is often associated with political campaigns, the public health community has not been exempted from its negative effects. Characterizing the spread of science- or health-related misinformation can allow for a more critical and evidence-based analysis of misinformation and inform risk communication strategies during public health emergencies.

During infectious disease outbreaks, effective communication is critical for efficient response and recovery efforts. Fear, uncertainty, and lack of knowledge may increase opportunities for the propagation of misinformation. Given some of these psychological factors, emergency situations can be particularly ideal for the spread of misinformation because the information seeking behaviors of affected parties are increased. Public health professionals have acknowledged that social media will now play a major role in the communication of future disasters, increasing the need for better understanding of misinformation.

In its advice to localities in dealing with a pandemic, Johns Hopkins makes the following points:

  • Local officials must make a proper and honest assessment of the current situation.
  • Evaluate and muster resources, including an inventory of resources.
  • Ask: What are the capabilities (locally) to cope with the situation.
  • Identify factors that can contribute the most to building local resilience, both medically and otherwise.
  • Ask: How will functioning (government, daily life, commerce) be affected?
  • Ask: What interventions will be needed?
  • Good cross-sector dialog is crucial to create greater understanding of the situation.
  • Regular and honest communication with the general public is vital.

Look at those points then measure Pittsfield government and BHS for their performance. Have they failed the public?

These two paragraphs from Hopkins underline one of the biggest shortcomings in Pittsfield’s response to COVID-19. The communication with the important constituencies, especially the general public, has been atrocious. Communications within and among the mayor’s office, BHS, the state, the mayor’s COVID Response Team, and various city departments has been spotty and contentious. Locally, we have seen a classic “Pittsfield Protocol” whereby the various elements are treating the others as hostile. It’s as if each regards their own piece of “turf” as a fiefdom with their heads as war lords.

God help Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, who have been virtually ignored. The mayor cars about the homeless, the addicts, and other demographic subsets while telling what’s left of the middle class, “Good luck. You’re on your own.”

One department head, code name Dolphin, told THE PLANET that he/she raised the issue with the mayor in February, only to be ignored. When Dolphin brought up the issue again in a meeting, same result but worse, having ben told not to mention it again, officially or otherwise. Dolphin was also critical of the mayor’s response team, noting something THE PLANET pointed out, that there are no doctors or medical experts — just a collection of “self-serving bureaucrats.” Mudsticks, might be another term for them.

Here’s the problem with Covid-19:

If we do nothing, it goes out of control. There is nearly universal agreement on this point. Every week the number of infected people doubles or triples, according to the best estimates of R0 today. Within about two months, hospitals start to collapse under the pressure (Italy) and can survive only by building emergency new facilities using help from the rest of the country (Wuhan). However, if you really are doing nothing, then two months later the rest of the country falls down and no one can help you. At this point, there are no more ICU beds left and the mortality rate goes from 2% to 5-10% because we run out of respirators.

On the other hand, if we declare a state of emergency … schools shut down, airports virtually close, and the country goes on lockdown. All for what, like 3,000 cases?? Then if the disease is successfully suppressed a few months later, everything opens back up and we look around and say, gee, why did we even do that?! Why did the country shut down when the ordinary flu killed 100x more people this year? Didn’t we way overreact?

But the difference between 5,000 cases and 5 million cases is 10 weeks of inaction. That is why governments around the world are taking severe and enormous action now, because we are at the edge of the precipice.

Will Covid-19 be considered a pandemic in two years? That depends on us. Please, if you have a cough and/or a fever, stay at home and stay away from others. You probably have a cold, but if you’re a minimally symptomatic carrier, you can do your part by making sure your particular Covid-19 ends at you and doesn’t get passed on to another person.

I believe Lovely Linda Tyer’s supporters side of the story. She cares about all of the people who live in the community she leads. She may not have changed Pittsfield politics for the better, but the good thing about her that is always true: She cares! I admire Mayor Linda Tyer’s compassionate leadership! If I were a politician, I would want to be like Linda Tyer! I would want the people I lead to know that I am compassionate and caring. I would be the opposite of most politicians and bureaucrats in government because I would bring humanity back to public service like the great leadership of the best Mayor of Pittsfield, EVER, named Linda Tyer!

Pittsfield politics has failed the people for generations. But, some people only “Blame Linda”. I support the Lovely Linda Tyer as the best Mayor of Pittsfield, EVER! I admire her for her strength in leadership and compassion for all of the people. That is how I feel about her. To be clear, I do not have a romantic interest in Linda Tyer. In fact, I will her and Barry Clairmont a happy life together. I also want to make clear that I do not agree with some of her decisions in Pittsfield politics, but I do, indeed, agree with her progressive political views. If I were a politician, I would want to be similar in leadership to Linda Tyer!

Why are shared office spaces open? There isn’t a reason in the world for a shared office space in Pittsfield to be open. They are open for member access and it looked like they were having a party in there tonight.

Shut it down, stay at home.

Soon the boredom and anxiety will set in. So here is one amazing readily available resource to occupy your time and fascinate you and your children. YOUTUBE. Although there is a lot of nonsense and misinformation on YouTube it is also an unending source of wonder and education. Perhaps we can share subjects others may find interesting. I will start with OLD PHOTOS NEW YORK CITY. These will blow your mind. In fact there are old photos of almost everything and I am talking hundreds if not thousands. Photos of the fifties, sixties or seventies. Woodstock or any country western singer. How to paint. How to fix your lawn mower. How to cut your own hair.
There are many videos of jets trying to land in high winds that you will enjoy. Also just type inworld BRIDGES or WINDMILL FARMS or HOOVER DAMN. Anything you have a slight interest in and you can occupy yourself or kids for weeks on end. You can watch actual surgery’s. Tons of videos of Las Vegas or Moscow or Tokyo. If you can think of a subject it is there. If you do not know how to use the search feature get someone to show you how. It will be well worth your time.

I love staying home. There is so much to do at home and I don’t mean just housework. I mean fun stuff….movies, reading, learning stuff, music, etc. Work takes so much time away from home that this gives us time to do things we normally don’t have time to do when we are running all over the place. I wish we weren’t doing this for a terrible virus, but that is the situation. Working at home is great too. No travel time. No prep time for going to work.

It’s great to see the airlines focusing on sanitizing their aircraft, the schools cleaning and sanitizing the classrooms, and the grocery stores upping their game to keep up with the demand. Johnny A, great suggestions by you and others. The internet is like a library of unlimited resources, and there’s hundreds of tv channels, and houses are much bigger. Kids have it made, compared to my day, when you were lucky if you had an outdated set of Brittanicas around and 3 black and white channels. They don’t even have to break into public works trucks or steal from the ole Big N, to get their porn. (There’s a reason Playboy just stopped publishing again, and Eagle won’t be far behind). Unfortunately, they have less siblings than ever, and there are more broken homes, and they can’t visit with friends. so they have it harder in some regards, but they do have social media, Face Time, etc.

Let us all use our time wisely, on the internet and otherwise. You tube is a great resource to learn and there are many other sites that don’t pollute the mnd. As someone else wrote, you can fix up your house. I recommend going room to room and making a very detailed list, then do a walk around outside and do the same, for exterior of home, and yard. And Carr Hardware delivers. Get some exercise too, daily, and some fresh air, even if in your own yard. And since most of us are overweight, stop eating so damn much and you’ll feel better. With the people loosing jobs, perhaps the cost of handmen, and painters will come down to Earth. Plumbers get over 100 per hour, and painters want about $35. Carpenters at least $50, Crazy!!!!!

I also suggest we all get our affairs in order with this time we have, and not specifically because of Corona, but becasue we are all going to die sooner or later, and we should all have wills, etc, as well as written directives spelling out to our trusted person/s for our final wishes.

There are people dying, fighting for their lives, getting really sick, people losing jobs, the economy in trouble, and a major concern of the far left media is President Trump calling the virus the Chinese virus. They have no problem with everyone still calling the 1918 epidemic the Spanish flu. Our own Liz Warren is promoting this nonsense.

Because that is where the virus came from. It is a new type of coronavirus that originated in China. Seems that the location of where the virus originates is important and if China was being more helpful about patient zero we could learn a lot about this virus. Also, I believe President Trump is very mad that China is trying to blame our military for their virus outbreak. He starting calling it the Chinese virus shortly after their insane accusations.

I think it’s perfectly acceptable to change the name, it should be called the Wuhan Virus. Why might you ask?

Coronaviruses are a type of virus, there are thousands of different versions.
There may be more versions of different coronaviruses that infect us in the future.
There is a long history of naming diseases after places where they originated from.
This allows the general public an easier identifier that the often extremely technical nomenclature associated with the actual name of the virus.

229E (alpha coronavirus)
NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
OC43 (beta coronavirus)
HKU1 (beta coronavirus)
Other human coronaviruses
MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS)
SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS)
SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19)

His state is bazillions in debt due to overspending and handouts to illegals. He has to grovel for fed funds because he doesn’t have a choice. He’s an idiot!

There was a coronavirus conference today with Linda Tyer, doctors, and some other city people. She said there would be more. I heard it on the radio, but caught the last half hour of it. It wasn’t bad. There was some useful information given. No quarantine yet for the city, but it could happen in the future. Better late than never I guess, but we should have been getting these sooner. What is the condition of the patients in the hospital who are suffering from this? 17 last I heard. How are they doing? The public should be informed about this.

It’s also the fact that we get a lot of people in this area who travel all over the world. Many people in this area coming back from Europe are spreading it to our local population. You are right that we are not a large area with huge population so we shouldn’t have this many cases. I can’t blame BMC for people traveling abroad who are spreading it in this area, but obviously BMC is not doing everything by protocol, but they are not the only reason we have more cases in this area.

BMC is still putting patients and the public risk. There are a number if workers who have been recently exposed to people with confirmed cases of COVID-19. These people were exposed while not wearing masks due to BMC restricting masks to medical personnel.
These people are low level administrative “grunts” who interact with huge sections of the population.
BMC’s solution? Don’t send them home for quarantine, put them in waiting rooms behind sliding glass windows and let them greet people.

We’ve already covered that. BMC has violated self-quarantine orders by returning nursing staff to rotation more than a week early.

Now they are putting administrative staff, those that should be in quarantine, as public greeters and as receptionists.

I hope the next time the city charter is amended that there will be a section dealing with ticketing cars for over parking during a pandemic. It just seems kind of bizarre that anyone would even be thinking about it and that makes me wonder where the money is winding up. I mean the city is paying workers and teachers millions of dollars for NOT working but feels the need to enforce overtime parking? Of all the city functions that are not getting done somehow this one seems to be critical? Are there business s open on North st that are complaining of all the spots being taken up?

You aren’t befuddled, he is.

The point of a lockdown (stay safe, stay at home) is preventative. If it’s the Baker Administrations position that it is reactive, we are in trouble.

Baker was easily two weeks late on closing schools.
The moment those two children from Dalton were sent home was the moment he should have closed the schools. Schools should have been closed March 2 or 3rd. A week later he was still not doing anything.
It took two extra weeks before schools were closed.

The state should be on lockdown NOW. Social distancing is the only thing that prevents the spread of disease.

All non-essential businesses should close NOW.
The longer we wait the worse it is.

Hendrix
Hendrix
Reply to  Police Report

So lockdown now for how long? Nobody is going out anyway. At some point don’t we have to look at this from a cost/benefit perspective? Are we going to tank the entire economy for a virus with a 1-2% mortality rate, the majority being the elderly that are already susceptible to any virus. That answer might be easy to teachers and other people working in the public sector sitting home collecting a check, but for those of us in the private sector trying to keep a roof over our heads, like always, will suffer.

Brava to your wife. She’s one of the good ones. I would like to add that our relative in Minnesota, a retired lab worker, sent this article on 19 March, about 1,700 Covid-19 tests awaiting completion – they are frozen in a lab. They have no idea when they will get results. It’s shocking to me, as if we live in a third world country. We are being exposed hourly – not just to this pandemic, but to the stunning reality that the United States is fragile, unprepared, and seemingly unreacting to producing the test kits and other related materials needed for frontline workers. If Trump is such a great businessman, why hasn’t he put our tax money where his mouth is and offered faltering manufacturers in our own country monetary incentives and up-front payments to roll the machinery and crank out everything we need NOW? Here’s a link to the article I referenced: https://www.kvrr.com/2020/03/19/minnesota-has-1700-frozen-samples-waiting-on-coronavirus-testing-but-tests-are-in-short-supply/

But Trump has known about it since January and cannot or will not get the proper equipment to the hospitals. I watch him and Pence dodge questions after question every day. It almost seems that they are purposely hoping to kill off all the seniors in order to balance the social security budget. Yah, I said it.
There is talk of actually closing hospitals because they cannot protect the staff. There are first responders questioning if they should even get involved because they do not want to get infected and wind up killing their own family members. The Chinese knew of this in November, destoryed the samples after discovered, said it couldn’t be transmitted human to human, silenced their critics, and let thousands o f their citizens travel the world after exposure, and now we have about 150 countries affected, thousands dead, and many more sickened, including in the berkshires. It came from China. It’s the Chinese, or better yet, the Wuhan Virus. And, the Chinks blame the US Amy for creating the virus and bringing it to Wuhan.
God you hate Trump and America so much. Move to China, delcare your Muslimhod, and go to a concentration camp you ill informed person.

I read one analysis that said when this whole mess is over China will emerge as the number one world power. And that the United States will emerge as a broke economically devastated country torn apart with political infighting, unable to move out of its own way. Due to horrible leadership America has burned many many bridges and will have few if any friends left in the world when the virus crisis has passed.
This post will get many kneejerk negs from clueless Trump followers, many of whom do not understand that working together is always better than slandering and blathering aimlessly. But sadly, as time go on they will see the truth in my words.

Hi Vickie
My understanding of this topic is that the vast majority of negative comments about the China Virus are directed at the Chinese GOVERNMENT not the people of China nor the thousands of Chinese/Asians legally living in the USA.

So if Mayor Tyer is such a leader what is she doing of substance right now to help the community?

Has she suspended paid parking? It would stop the need to touch those kiosks. It would allow people to park, pick up food, and go without having to interact with those kiosks. It would stop people from getting ticketed.

Did she initiate a command center before being forced to by the Governor?

Has she led the way in the school or school lunch program? No that was DESE and the Governor also.

When one considers essential services, Mayor Linda Tyer has proven she isn’t one.

You’re not impressed with her Corona Web Site that doesn’t even report how many Pittsfielder’s are infected? That should be posted daily for all to see. And the states’ web site, that is supposed to be updated daily by 4pm, hasn’t been updated since yesterday at 4. Must be nice to have weekends off, even in a pandemic.

21 Berkshire confirmed cases as of 530 Sat according to state web site, that got updated late. But what cities and towns?

Is the mayor in the dark on how many in Pittsfield, or is she just keeping up Kapanskis in the dark?

You can probably assume at least 90% are from Pittsfield. They are the only ones with a reason to hide the numbers. And the Eagle, who wants more readership, could tell us if they wanted to. Draw your own conclusions but it would seem they are protecting someone and so I will not subscribe.

At Market 32 in Lenox a woman was complaining at the service desk that the store should have store hours exclusively for second home owners.
She was quite vocal that it was their “right” to get hours for them, they spend more and pay more taxes.

So now all the New Yoka’s are coming here in droves, whether they are infected or not. South county numbers should skyrocket now, but the state is only reporting county wide. Why can we have numbers by city and town. Does the mayor of PIttsfield know how many in the Pitts? What is this a secret.

Yup, and everyone of these arrogants is a rich lib, the kind of non-city resident that takes over the Pittsfield City Council on some completely irrelevant issue such as the TransPacific Partnership.

And the ones who ruin your lunch because they sit nearby bitching about Hannity and Fox News the whole damn time.

At least use a blinker, yo.

But what’s the ratio for every one of these moonbats per drug dealer/addict coming from New York?

NY has lifted its plastic bag ban, why hasn’t Pittsfield?

Reusable bags present health risks.
Paper bags cost retailers (stores and restaurants), who are struggling, 5x the amount of a plastic bag.

Why does Mayor Tyler continue to hurt businesses with her lack of leadership?

Lift the ban on plastic bags, suspend paid parking, send the meter maids home or have them do something useful, let restaurants use the cheaper plastic takeout containers.
Close the schools for the year, issue a citywide “stay home” order. Mayor Tyer instead of sitting home on your ass and drinking wine and do something.

You said you were a leader, you are not.

I disagree with “closing the schools for the year.” Perhaps closing schools until the end of April and then reassessing the situation. Who is to say at this point what will happen? Too early to make a decision on the schools until corona testing is done and we have a better idea of the stats. No need to panic.

You would be very wrong. We do not have time for bodies to become part of statistics.

Based on Mass Live data, the death rate is 0.77% in Massachusetts. Much lower than annual flu rates. Also, initial high death rate by Who Health Organization official from Africa was wrong. The “scientist” could not do math. Maybe CNN or MSNBC could hire him.One of those networks claimed that if Michael Bloomberg gave every person a million dollars each, it would be a better use of the $450MM he spent on his campaign. What genius in the main street media (propagandists).

The US mortality rate is currently 1.2% and dropping lower and lower as time goes on. Eventually it will reach a number that is low enough to justify an ease on restrictions. Then there will be a resurgence in cases, and we’ll go back to restrictions, and so on and so forth…this is a long term situation….until a vaccine is created.

And the plastic bag ban is ironically funny. One of the big contentions was their likelihood to harbor germs and spread illness. What a bunch of idiots.

Studies show that children are less affected which makes them super carriers. Which then let’s them commingle in buildings where they can practice social distancing, carry the infection, bring it back to parents and grandparents and we get a surge. Also if those parents are first responders, nurses, paramedics, police, it just makes the whole thing worse.

Let’s see what the expert says.

WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Friday that Americans will most likely have to continue staying at home and practicing social distancing for “at least several weeks” amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“If you look at the trajectory of the curves of outbreaks and other areas, at least going to be several weeks.
I cannot see that all of a sudden, next week or two weeks from now it’s going to be over. I don’t think there’s a chance of that. I think it’s going to be several weeks.”

Now for each day we wait, that adds two days to the back end. The sooner we start, the sooner we can end this. Schools go to mid June.
We can play semantics about what “several” means but it’s certainly more than 4 and probably closer to 6-8. That would put us easily into mid May.

One discussion about closures was 30-45 days after the numbers stop dropping, China still has millions under quarantine.

Re: My summary of the horrible 10-February-2020 GE and EPA settlement

The following is my summary of the horrible 10-February-2020 GE and EPA settlement:

GE will not remove all of the industrial toxic waste PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) chemicals that GE dumped into the Housatonic River. The EPA called for GE to remove 46,970 pounds of PCBs from the river’s banks, bottoms and flood plain. GE may have allowed up to 1.5 million pounds of cancer causing PCBs to enter the local environment in Berkshire County.

GE will dispose of nearly 1 million cubic yards of tainted soils and sediments with average PCB concentrations of 20 to 25 parts per million at a new landfill at the former Lane Construction site in Lee (Mass.). The proposed landfill would cause residential property values in Lee and neighboring Lenoxdale to plummet.

Tim Gray of the Housatonic River Initiative said, “This whole cleanup is absurd.” He explained that the EPA hasn’t sampled the polluted Housatonic River in 20 years. Over time, sampling becomes outdated. The future removal of PCBs to what will be left behind is unknown. More than 23 tons of PCBs would remain in the flood plain after the 13 year long cleanup and capping project.

GE is in serious financial trouble! GE has lost around $7.5 billion over the past 14 months alone. GE has toxic debts that they cannot possibly pay for or sell off in the open market. GE has been accused of major accounting fraud since 1995. GE uses unrealistic business growth forecasts to say they are not financially insolvent. The stock market has been tanking during this month of March 2020 with the recent COVID-19 news. With all of this bad news, neither GE nor the EPA has made a financial estimate or commitment to pay for the lengthy cleanup and capping project. To be clear, there is a $0.00 account balance for a project that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Leaky landfills are capped toxic waste dumps that only are effective for a finite period of time estimated to last between 20 to 30 years. As time progressive, the caps begin to tear and leak PCBs back into the environment. Caps need to monitored from day one. Caps are a Band-Aid solution because future generations have to fix the defective caps to keep the environment clean.

Pittsfield (Mass,) made a deal with the proverbial Devil when Mayor Gerry Doyle signed the Consent Decree in 2000. 20 years later, Mayor Linda Tyer and her political colleagues in Berkshire County did the same. The people of Berkshire County really believe the politicians have sold them out. GE will give Pittsfield and a few other towns along the Housatonic River $63 million for a terrible future of ill health for the local people exposed to cancer causing PCBs.

In closing, I believe the EPA, GE, and Pittsfield/Berkshire County politicians are wrong for supporting a horrible settlement where over one million pounds of PCBs will be left in the Housatonic River after the would be completion of a 13 year long cleanup and capping project. The residential property owners of Lee and Lenoxdale will see their property values plummet when a “leaky landfill” will be put in the Town of Lee. Tim Gray called the project “absurd”, and many local people lost faith in their “sell out” politicians. GE is in serious financial project, and there is a $0.00 account balance to fund a project that will cost hundreds of million of dollars to complete. The caps will eventually fail, which puts future generations at risk of getting cancer from PCBs if they don’t take action.

NY has stopped testing for the public as the realize they’ve lost control of the situation.
They took too long to close schools and to issues “stay home, stay safe” orders.

It is time for MA to step up and shut this down.
We need an immediate “stay home, stay safe order”
Only critical businesses should be running
Schools should be closed for the year.
Only critical govt functions should be running.
Limit travel between states
We are very near to three states on the verge of medical collapse (NY, NJ, CT), we share borders with two. We are actually their summer and winter playground.
I know people don’t like bad news but it must be done.
Many of us here had asked schools be closed over a week prior to that happening. We were right.
We are right about this as well.

https://www.boston.com/news/health/2020/03/21/a-new-message-on-coronavirus-in-hard-hit-areas-dont-get-tested

“Health officials in New York, California and other hard-hit parts of the country are restricting coronavirus testing to health care workers and people who are hospitalized, saying the battle to contain the virus is lost and we are moving into a new phase of the pandemic response.

As cases spike sharply in those places, they are hunkering down for an onslaught, and directing scarce resources where they are needed most to save people’s lives. Instead of encouraging broad testing of the public, they’re focused on conserving masks, ventilators, intensive care beds — and on getting still-limited tests to health care workers and the most vulnerable. The shift in tone and strategy – coming after weeks of clamoring for greater testing capacity — signals another tipping point in the U.S. response to the virus, a change other states are likely to embrace as disease counts climb.“

The virus is here, it’s spreading, we need to stop the spread and many people are just not paying attention.
Go to Walmart on any given day, it’s packed with people just wandering about. Local skate parks, filled with kids not practicing social distancing. There are people about that think the disease and need for caution is entirely fake.
We can not wait any longer, this is real.

While much of what you have written in previous posts on the planet is well done this is fear mongering. Walmart needs to be open for food and medicine and in these uncertain times the remainder of the store needs to be closed. As for the skate parks our city needs effective leadership, someone who can actually run a government.

This is absolutely not fear mongering.
I’m not saying shut down Walmart. I am saying the State needs to issue a stay home order for all non-essential workers.
Remind them that now is not the time to take your kids shopping at Walmart and to use Walmart as some sort of social gathering place.

Again I understand people don’t like bad news but this is the reality on the front line of this pandemic, we are not stemming the tide, we are slowly wading into deeper water.

A woman in her 50s from Middlesex County is the second person in Massachusetts to die from COVID-19 related illness, the Department of Public Health announced today. She had a pre-existing condition predisposing her to more severe disease.
As of today, more than 5,200 residents of Massachusetts have been tested for COVID-19 by the State Public Health Laboratory and commercial labs. Of those, 525 people have tested positive.
Yesterday, DPH announced that a man in his 80s from Suffolk County was the first person in Massachusetts to die from COVID-19 related illness. The man had been hospitalized and had pre-existing health conditions that put him at higher risk for COVID-19.
COVID-19 activity is increasing in Massachusetts. At this time, if people are only mildly symptomatic, they should speak to their healthcare provider about whether they need to be assessed in person. If not, they should stay at home while they are sick. Asymptomatic family members should practice social distancing and immediately self-isolate if they develop symptoms.
In the United States, there have been more than 15,219 [cases] of COVID-19 and more than 200 deaths, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Massachusetts and nationwide, the public is being asked to avoid crowds, stay 6 feet away from others, not shake hands or hug, and call/Facetime and online chat with friends and loved ones rather than meet face to face.

What’s needed is a massive amounts of testing for people who have had flu like symptoms earlier this year and recovered, like me and my family, to see if we actually had Covid-19. This is a seperate test from a standard Covid-19 test. If so, we have anti-bodies that can be picked up in a test, and if so, we are likely immune from re-infection, and if so, thousands more have likely already had this in America and recovered, and the more people recovered, the more we can get back to the normal course of our lives, and the less quarantining required. My doctor told me I had some kind of virus and asked if I had a flu shot. I said I had. He said there were other virus around. My son was given an oral antibiotic. My granddaughter was the least sick of all of us, and she brought it home from school. This virus has been in America since last year.

Political correctness played a big part in the spread of the corona virus in Italy. They made fun of President Trump for the ban of travel from China and began a “hug a Chinese person” campaign in response to his ban. They also refused to close their borders until it was too late.
