(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION NOV. 20-22, 2020) — This weekend, we present a bit of a round-up, the odds and ends that invariably accumulate when doing journalism of this sort.
MORE COVID — In covering the COVID violations and appropriations with respect to Pittsfield’s taverns and eateries, THE PLANET has taken testimony from numerous sources representing the range of interests, from politicians to proprietors to patrons. We have been open to all information, trying as best as we can to verify, triangulate, and confirm. It is, as anyone in the news business knows, an inexact science. On multiple occasions, we have invited those who slammed our coverage — restaurant proprietors who have protested “thus too loudly — to submit their complaints in the form of a guest column. No one took us up on the offer. That must be allowed to speak for itself.
In this business, you put up or shut up. They have chosen the latter, and we respect that choice. We don’t agree with it, but we respect it. From the reluctance to “correct the record,” it is a reasonable assumption that THE PLANET‘s coverage has been, in essence and substance, accurate, a bit too close for comfort. In our coverage, have have once again run into an old foe, BLM Syndrome. Blame The Messenger occurs when the media nails wrongdoing, after which the guilty parties claim we created and are responsible for the bad news. It attributes to us far more “power” than we want or need, but it does serve as a confirmation that we got the story right.
With that, we share this communication from an employee of Proprietors Lounge, whose named has been withheld on request:

I just wanted to comment on the Proprietors Lodge notes you recently posted. I’d like my name to not be used but I’ve worked there part time since August (with time on my hands, my friend and I picked up a gig there). I was not there for the wedding in July, in which they were cited for having 10 people over the limit and alleged mask issues. They received a week suspension on their license and served that sentence in September.
Since I have been there, I’ve witnessed zero COVID regulation violations. Tables are separated, staff wear masks, tables and chairs disinfected, paper menus thrown out immediately after use, signs everywhere for patrons to have masks on when not seated, no overcrowding, etc.
The noise, parking, etc complaints pre-date COVID. [They] have been addressed and continue to be addressed, so it’s not fair to bucket that into the recent conversation.
I just wanted to set the record straight, anonymously, because I see how hard the business is working to balance health with livelihood. I’m sure it’s a tough balancing act for the employers. Even in my case, I’m speaking from my own experience and observations. It’s hard enough work to remain hyper vigilant and run the business let alone respond to allegations. I just want to make sure the COVID discussion is separate from other operating discussions that have taken place in the past and should not be piled on.
THE PLANET thanks our correspondent for this information. If true, we applaud the work being done there to achieve that “balancing act.” We’re grateful that we did not get into the restaurant or bar business.

PITTSFIELD TOPS IN NATION — In our reading, we came across this dubious honor for the city of Pittsfield, posted on bonvoyaged.com. This ran under the title: “Most Miserable Cities: Fastest Shrinking Cities … Pittsfield Takes the Cake.”
The website lists dozens of cities — most in the South or Southwest — but Pittsfield “takes the cake.” Here’s what it says:
When the jobs in a city disappear, it’s typically only a matter of time before the people follow in search of better fortunes. Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was once a thriving city thanks to General Electric’s presence, but when the company decided to leave during the 1980s, people started leaving. Since General Electric left Pittsfield, the city has experienced a 26.5% decline in population as employment opportunities were found elsewhere. Pittsfield lost an estimated 7,000 residents between 2010 and 2018 …
Not what you would call an inducement for a mass migration there. The website did not mention anything about “vibrant” or “dynamic.”
Was that an oversight?
There will be those who want to blame the precipitous decline of a once great small city on THE PLANET.

AT IT ONCE AGAIN — Because of the astute monitoring of one of THE PLANET‘s readers — part of a vast network of correspondents, Z-agents, gumshoes, and sources that make up The Secret Squadron — we have beat the pants off of all local media on an important story. At least we consider it important when we have a district attorney who consistently ignores her role and responsibilities as #1 public safety and criminal justice official in Berkshire County.

After review, she has been notified future such violations will be referred to the Office of the Attorney General. Wendt’s post prompted this one, from someone with close connection to the D.A.’s office. Who knows? He or she might even be currently employed there! THE PLANET, of course, “ain’t sayin. ‘” This is from “Mistakes Were Made:”

WHEN SHOTS RANG OUT — Our parents’ generation had Dec. 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Millennials have Sept. 11, 2001. THE PLANET has Nov. 22, 1963.
That was the day, of course, when gunmen murdered President John F. Kennedy in a crossfire while he rode in the presidential limo through downtown Dallas. It was that reverse moment from the Wizard of Oz, only this time the world went from living Technicolor to somber black and white. America never recovered from what was nothing less than a coup de tat.
Everyone who lived through that day, old enough to realize what had happened, knows precisely where they were and what they were doing.
Jack Kennedy didn’t serve long enough as president for a definitive judgment on what might have been, but the evidence is impressive. He:
- Worked with Congress to pass one of the biggest tax cuts in U.S. history, reviving the U.S. economy.
- Would have withdrawn American troops from the debacle in Vietnam. His plans for same undoubtedly P’d-off the CIA, Defense Department, and Pentagon warmongers. Also remember that LBJ, Jack’s VP, hated the president.
- Stared down the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War during October 1962. The Cuban Missile Crisis came within a thread of worldwide nuclear war. For that, JFK should be lionized well beyond all of his notable shortcomings.
Each year on The Dan Valenti Show, we would have a guest who was somehow personally involved in the Kennedy Assassination — authors, researchers, witnesses, doctors who treated the president in Trauma Room 1 at Parkland Memorial Hospital on that day. The most memorable was Dr. Malcolm Perry, who led the vast team of doctors and nurses who worked furiously in the ER to keep the president alive.
THE PLANET will never forget his testimony. Each person in that room, including Dr. Perry, he said, located Kennedy’s massive head would in the occipital parietal region. If you take your hand and place it over the right back of your head, that’s the area. All on the medical team said that entire part of the president’s head was missing. Miraculously, though, in the autopsy photos taken that night, that region of the head is entirely intact! For the record, the ER team also stated that the wound in the front of Kennedy’s throat was an entrance would, not an exit would. That, of course, makes a mockery of the Warren Commission’s “Magic Bullet” theory and the myth of the Lone Gunman.
The best book on the assassination was written by David Lifton, also a guest on my show. It’s called Best Evidence. It’s a worthwhile read for those who need a reason to be more disgusted with the United States, its politicians, and its governance.

Aren’t all of us Pittsfield natives supposed to be saddened by all of the negative stories and mockery of Pittsfield’s downward spiral? For over one decade now, Yale Photography Professor Gregory Crewdson has been showing large photos of Pittsfield (Mass.) as “a city in decay” in upscale art galleries and museums in London, NYC, and L.A. Your post tonight about a web-site naming Pittsfield the most miserable city with many thousands of people moving away over the years due to the city’s distressed economy is yet another insult added to the injury of a dying city. Also, I was a young teenage student at Pittsfield High School in 1990 when GE pulled most of its jobs out of Pittsfield. That was 30-years-ago now. In the past 3 decades, Pittsfield politics has done nothing to bring back living wage jobs to the city. In fact, downtown Pittsfield is called “Social Services Alley” by day and “the Shooting Gallery” after hours. I believe Pittsfield does not want real economic development. Instead, I believe Pittsfield wants acute economic inequality and the poor people who live in the inner-city area to rely on social services programs. I call it “perverse incentives” because I believe Pittsfield makes more money off of people being dependent on government assistance and non-profit programs than they would if the average working class residents had full-time living wage jobs. I also believe Pittsfield politics is very corrupt. The same group of insiders, one political (Democratic) party, political hacks run the show and pull the same crap year in and year out in Pittsfield. In closing, I have studied communities in my college studies decades ago, and I have also lived in or near the Pittsfield area for many years of my then young adult life. I understand all to well that Pittsfield politics is part of the problem for Pittsfield’s demise into misery.

Well according to the Eagle Berkshire Bank is to blame for putting the DAs deposit in the wrong account, with a similar name. Don’t accounts have numbers? So not her fault again. Harrington also took the opportunity to slam the newspaper for doing its job albeit late.
Seems it takes quite a while before the town publishes a homeowners name for possible foreclosure proceedings.

I think people – or the person writing in saying the blog was too hard on business owners – don’t realize that the public are dead tired of propping up these get rich schemes for the political class that offer no service or benefit to the general population. The movie theater was serious fraud, facilitated by DPI and their lawyers at Cohen Kinne. (Obviously the honorable attorneys will be affronted and disagree with my statement and therefore I ask them to share with Dan the Financial statements from the theater. I am certain they will not.)
It’s disgusting that these things keep happening and it’s no surprise people are ducking off to better locales. I don’t want to pay for their lifestyle and probably neither do you. All the while also being lectured to. After irritating their neighbors for three years running no one believes Proprietors – they could be telling the truth no? Why now and not the 15 times before when they didn’t? It’s galling.
So, the actual campaign funds issue is not that big of a deal. But, wrong way Harrington can’t admit when she’s made a mistake (certainly a theme of hers). Can anyone else remember a time when their bank has deposited into the wrong account?
So to recap what I recall of her:
Calls herself an incompetent attorney in open court- not her fault.
Raises her left hand at inauguration- not her fault.
Failed to pay property taxes – not her fault.
Office failed to get a murder conviction – previous administrations faultand jury’s fault, but well still use him for appeals in the most important case in the county.
Got a speeding ticket while once again leaving the county to politicize her office – New York states fault.
Didn’t pay said ticket – still New York’s fault.
Got stopped driving the wrong way – not her fault.
Got let off on driving with a suspended license – RMV’s fault she had to spend seven hours on the phone to handle something the rest of the commonwealth would have to go to a hearing for.
Didn’t have to take a CWOF like the rest of society but created a Brady list containing those who have taken CWOFs – because that wasn’t her fault and she’s above that.
Now, we’re expected to believe that her bank deposited into the wrong account, this doesn’t sound like an office of high integrity!
I’m waiting for her to blame the voters next who voted for her, because if they didn’t vote for her, she wouldn’t be in this position to begin with to make all these mistakes.
Campaign funds is a big deal. If you read the official letter, she does this BS again, it’s going straight to AH’s role model, good ol’ AG Maura Healy.

In Pittsburgh, 15,000 provisional ballots–show up to vote, “You already voted.” {Someone in said in here that they encountered this in the Pitts.}
If no one registered, just assign it to someone. If they show up, provisional ballot.

DA Harrington did not comply with several requirements of campaign finance law. A repeat violation of something that was simply a “clerical error” is not going to be reported to the Attorney General, as the letter states. She violated the law. If she does it again, it will go to the AG.
Now we have Tricia Farley-Bouvier on the Eagle FB page in defense of Andrea Harrington’s campaign violations.
Tricia, We have agencies like the Office of Campaign Finance because it is their job to be the watchdog of campaign laws in Massachusetts. The purpose of the media is to alert the public when those laws have been violated. You have simultaneously attacked both, presumably in the name of political payback. It’s equally distressing you and our elected district attorney seem to not know the difference between a clerical error and an outright violation. Or is that you don’t care? OCPF does a great job keeping tabs on all the hundreds of accounts. An error is made, it is noted in the review and it is corrected. To make this into a headline……I just have to ask why?
Harrington was caught several times with campaign violations on her senate run. You would think she would be Squeaky clean on the one that is actually ABOUT the law. To summarize…Drove with a suspended license, failed to pay years of real estate taxes; sued for credit card debt; multiple campaign violations on multiple campaign accounts. Accused of running a campaign from the office by a top employee. This is all the fault of the newspaper picking on the poor lady DA.

The Eagle did follow up but the story got quashed by interventions from Linda Tyer and Tricia and a threat from both Andy and Andrea.
They sent Heather to the clerks office and court house in NY to ask background questions, do some research, and to pick up copies of all the notices sent to Andrea (there were 9 notices). They contacted Chief Wynn for gps logs and tapes from the internal lines as well as any emails or correspondence from his office to Andrea. Within hours the mayor was on the phone to the paper as was Tricia. Both Andy and Andrea made it very clear, when asked to go on record for the first story, that any printing of information that would show Andrea in a bad light would be detrimental to the paper’s access to the DA’s office. It was blackmail pure and simple.
The story disappeared.
There are lots of records showing she was given ample notice to pay the ticket and she was very well aware that she was driving on a suspended license. Her address hasn’t changed in a decade or more.
The rules didn’t even apply to her when she got her license reinstated. Left unresolved, because the story was pulled due to political pressure, was what car was being driven and who was paying for it.
Andrea is as corrupt as they come.
We would ask the DA about this, or her flack Andy, but they don’t speak to us. We might have to go to our sources within the office itself.
I can provide you the emails showing what happened. The PD blocked access to public information as well as the log and the report filed by the officer, after he “let Harrington go”.
The log originally said citation issued. Then didn’t.
Clinton court records do not jive with what Harrington said about her paying her fine.
Originally the Eagle was going to pursue it much further though legal channels but then just dropped it. They even reassigned the original reporter to other “more pressing” fluff pieces.

In all reality, does the Eagle need access to the DA’s office? Hypothetically, if the office was held to the transparent standards wrong way promised – than everything would be public record anyways. I would think the AG (State Police Detectives) would like to take a look at this case. Massachusetts state government has a $3.6 billion budget deficit for fiscal year 2021, but the very belated and still unpassed state budget you just voted for increases state government spending by $2.4 billion or 5.5 percent over the previous fiscal year’s state budget. I fail to see how the math adds up here.
You said the State Senate’s revenue working group is on track to deliver revenue proposals in January [2021] ahead of next year’s budget debate. Also, the state did not fully fund the first year of the Student Opportunity Act. Why did Beacon Hill pass the law when you did not fully fund it?
Before you, Pittsfield State Senator Adam Hinds, propose tax increases approximately 2 months from now, please consider voting to rescind the 40 percent pay raise that you vote for yourself in early-2017. While you are at it, please consider cutting your pay, stipends, benefits, and compensation, too.
Please lead by example. When you propose tax increases during the 2020 and 2021 economic recession, start by sacrificing all of your taxpayer-funded perks. If you don’t want to cut your own public perks, then you shouldn’t be asking your constituents to sacrifice their hard-earned money.
