PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION APRIL 23-5, 2021) — People are quick to place THE PLANET into their little, ideological boxes. Our work as a columnist, talk show host on radio and TV, and now blogger has been going on long enough where many make the mistake of thinking that because they know our work, they know us. That’s the downside of being a public figure. We not only accept it, we understand it. It doesn’t necessarily mean we embrace it.

THE PLANET is not, never has been, and never will be ideological. THE PLANET is a polemicist and a provocateur in the best tradition of our First Amendment freedoms, particularly freedom of speech and press. The point is not to push a particular point of view but to generate discussions, deliberations, and debates on matters of public interest, to help best sift some grains of truth from the drifting sand dunes of rhetorical vitriol.

In Massachusetts, arguably America’s most liberal state, only two kinds of animals win elective office: Hard-core Democrats plus a handful of nominal “Republicans.” Our local, state, and national reps are so blue they make cobalt seem like crimson. Under those circumstances, we share views that local lame stream media blocks. If the Commonwealth were redder than a Cook Island sunset, we would be Paul Mauriot blue.

As for Dan Valenti’s personal views, you would have to get to know the actual guy, not the long-fictionalized public image.  The real person is not to be confused with the public avatar. The real DV would surprise and maybe shock you, pleasantly, most likely.

As for “truth” in public events, you will never find it. It doesn’t exist.

In the Floyd-Chauvin case, for example, there are two radically different versions. In the Absolute, neither is true or right. Averaging them out to the middle makes no sense. That would be like saying that Ted Williams and Walt Alston averaged 260 MLB home runs (actually, 261 for Ted and only 260 for Walt). It’s a “true” statement, but Ted hit all 521.

The closest we can get to the truth on this good earth is a statement that includes ALL versions, dumping the arcane notion of logical incompatibility. The only True statement is: “George Floyd died needlessly at the hands of a murderous cop AND Officer Derek Chauvin acted correctly in his arrest of George Floyd, with death the byproduct of Floyd’s actions.” That statement incorporates the whole judgmental universe of the case. If you take sides, you step into the relative world, and maybe that’s all we humans have in this life.”

That said, we present this column, first published in The Washington Examiner.

‘It Wasn’t Even Close for Chauvin’

By Eddie Scarry

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty in the murder of George Floyd, so let’s pretend for a second that, like liberals, I don’t trust the criminal justice system. Here’s how I might react: I might take to the streets to riot, maybe throw things at cops, and bash some windows. If I didn’t do that, I would instigate others to do it for me and then justify it or, at minimum, excuse it.

I would do this for days, weeks, and months. I would make anyone who disagreed with me uncomfortable for doing so. I would never shut up about how unfair and unjust our criminal justice system actually is.

Fortunately, for me and small-business owners, landlords, and my friends and family, I’m not a liberal. I’m a critical thinker, and I trust the system. I disagree with the verdict, but I trust that the jurors deliberated honestly and came to what they believed to be a fair conclusion.

It appears that it wasn’t even close for Chauvin. The jury returned within 24 hours of deliberation to render guilty verdicts on all three charges — second- and third-degree murder, plus manslaughter.

But how could it be? The entire year of 2020 saw the media build up a narrative about a racist white cop kneeling on the neck of an innocent black man. It wasn’t the truth, but, hey, there was an election at stake. Journalists believed that then-President Donald Trumpneeded to be taken down. Riots across the nation would only help with that task.

And when more information came to light contradicting that narrative, the media not for one second backed down. And leading Democrats only grew more bold. President Joe Biden on Tuesday, hours before the verdict, said there would only be one “right” verdict — a conviction. Days before that, Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters took to the streets just miles away from the trial setting to agitate Black Lives Matter activists, telling them to get “more confrontational” if there was no murder conviction. Former President Barack Obama last week called Chauvin a murderer.

This is the new American justice. We call it “social justice.” It’s no longer about reasonable doubt and due process. It’s narrative and intimidation.

Chauvin will certainly appeal, and the judge overseeing his trial has already said that Waters’s comments alone could be enough to see the trial overturned on appeal.

Good. That’s the justice system I still believe in, but I’m not a liberal.

———- ooo ———-

Chauvin had no shot at a fair trial. For a year, social media, BLM “protesters,” and liberal politicians set up a powder keg where “guilty” on all counts was the only verdict possible. Chauvin’s defense called seven witnesses. All received death threats. One had a severed pig’s head dropped on his doorstep. What do you think was going through the minds of jurors?

Have a great weekend, everybody.

Dear Honorable Mayor Linda Tyer,

I would like you to know that my criticisms of your administration does not mean that I don’t support your leadership in Pittsfield politics. In fact, I have long supported your progressive vision and leadership of Pittsfield. I do not agree with some of your policy decisions, but I also understand that you inherited a mess in early-2016, and that Pittsfield faces a lot of obstacles, and that the Covid-19 global pandemic has been very difficult.

I tried to post a response to a blog poster on Dan Valenti’s awesome blog tonight, Thursday, 4/22/2021.

No one is perfect except you, Mr. Fritz. Your points about me voting for Biden/Harris and that I support – you wrote “love” – the Lovely Linda Tyer are true. Calling me a major hypocrite for my criticisms of them as politicians is mean-spirited. It is American to be able to criticize politicians whether you support them or oppose them. I voted for Biden/Harris because Donald Trump is a White Nationalist neo Nazi and Mike Pence is a far right religious nutcase who feminist and homosexual groups see as their Hitler-figure who wants to take away their rights and make them live in the Dark Ages of theocratic rule. I support the Lovely Linda Tyer because she speaks for Human Rights, cares about all of the residents of Pittsfield, including those who live in poverty, and is committed to rebuilding Pittsfield’s future after GE left town decades ago. I spoke favorably about the Lovely Linda Tyer on Dan Valenti’s radio show when I lived in Pittsfield in late-Summer 2003 to early-Spring-2004. People said I liked her romantically, but I praised her participation in Pittsfield politics on a professional level. I am happy for Barry Clairmont and the Lovely Linda, and I hope they will live a nice life together.

Thank you for your time, Honorable Mayor Linda Tyer.

Best regards,

Jonathan A. Melle

Donald Trump’s whole political movement was modeled after Adolf Hitler’s “Make Germany Great Again” White Nationalist Nazi movement in the 1920s and 1930s. Trump had White Nationalist neo Nazis work for his campaigns and presidential administration. Trump was not as clear as Hitler about his messages of hate, racism and violence, but it was well understood by most people. The irony of Trump’s Vice President, Mike Pence, is that Trump was never religious and Trump is a total moral hypocrite. Pence calls his wife “Mother” and Pence won’t be alone in a room with any professional woman who isn’t his wife. Pence believes in fundamental Biblical laws that would take away legal rights from women/or and homosexuals alike. Adolf Hitler’s Nazi ideology took away legal rights from Jewish People and anyone else who didn’t believe in Hitler’s fascist rule over Nazi Germany. To be clear, Trump and Pence were a scary pair of extremists in the White House for 4 long years. I will never support Donald Trump or Mike Pence in politics. I will never support political or religious extremists on either side of the political spectrum. I will always support Human Rights for All Peoples and people of our Planet Earth. I will always say that those with no rights have rights under and/or with me – past, present and future. I believe that we should love our country, but fear our government, especially when extremists serve in government. The real U.S. history is the genocides of tens of millions of native American Peoples during the 18th and 19th Century. The real history of the U.S. is slavery and most of the Founding Fathers owning slaves while fighting the British Empire and King George III for classical Liberty. The real U.S. history is the Chinese Exclusion Act, the detention of Japanese Americans during World War 2, Jim Crow laws until the 1960s, the U.S. military killing millions of foreign Peoples after World War 2, the huge underclass and working poor with no social mobility, growing economic inequality, the 2008 – 2009 Wall Street bailouts that cost working taxpayers trillions of dollars, including the bailouts of foreign banks that cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars, the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations mortgaging of America’s future so that Wall Street indexes are at record highs while Main Street is at rock bottom, and the list goes on and on with the U.S. government screwing us little people over time and time again. In closing, I do not understand what ruling elites are all about over the past 100 years that included the rise (and fall) of Hitler, World War 2 and the Holocaust, systemic racism, post-World War 2 endless war, Wall Street dominating our economy, and most of us getting left behind by the billionaires, multimillionaires and corrupt government.

Thank you for sharing the thoughts that are floating around in your head JM. I was going to counter everything you said but anyone reading this will see it for what it is, basically someone who has been brainwashed to view America negatively instead of the good it does here and around the globe. America has helped raise the standard of living for all people and America shares its wealth with other countries. America hasn’t and isn’t without its warts but it is still the best country with the most free and wealthy citizens. To end what you said about Trump is actually what the Democrats did in 2020

The democrat party created a Poll Tax on Black US Citizens to make it impossible for them to vote. To prevent them from electing Republican candidates running against democrats.

After the Emancipation Proclamation by Republican president Abraham Lincoln, it took 100 years to end Segregation and Jim Crow laws in the democrat controlled south.

I love my country, the United States of America, but the U.S. Government does not always live up to our national ideals of Liberty and Justice for All, Democracy, Free Markets and Capitalism, Peace and Equality, and so on. Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski’s lives are impacted by the ruling elites who do them many disservices. Sometimes, I believe politics and government is more of a game than a more perfect union. In closing, I wish the U.S. Government was good and just, but we really end up fearing the proverbial system more than believing in it.

The latest case the media wants us to cry racism about is the 2 girls fighting. A neighbor in the area had actual video of the incident so we can all see what is happening. We don’t need any of the politically biased media to interpret it for us to fit their agenda. One girl is unarmed and being attacked by a girl armed with a knife. The girl with the knife is about to plunge the knife into the other girl after being warned by the police officer not to do it, she is going to try to kill this girl anyway. The police officer saved the life of the unarmed girl being attacked. If he just let her die, they would have said that the police officer watched the African American girl being murdered and did nothing. They could spin it either way to fit their narrative that the officer was a racist.

The neighbor’s video was poor, but the police officer’s bodycam video told the story and he’s lucky he had it. Otherwise it would have come down to eye witness testimony which has proven to be notoriously unreliable. He had a split second to make a decision and save the girls life and he made the right choice. He should be lauded as a hero for potentially saving the girls life. It is sad that a 16 year old had to die, but completely understandable. I don’t envy the job of police officer these days.

What does republican mean in 2021 when Donald Trump runs the party. In what way does America prosper from Trump ?If Trump wins in 2024 where are we headed.Where does racism corporate tax cuts and banking and environmental deregulation take you.How does gasoline wheel turning make America better. How does turning your back on fair wages make the American people participate in Capitalism.Business without the agitation of union labor become a fair employer. You want to see an economy explode pay people enough to feel like they can buy things.Union labor built the middle class towns and cities……Republican today means white power backed by white militia.Today republican means the violent bully party of intimidation…..White power is desperate.White power has doubled down on lying to Americans that wont tolerate minorities sharing that power with them…..This is the regressive white republican party….Democrats have better ideas on the well being of Americas citizens of poverty that wants them to particiapate.Republicans want capitalism to thrive on the backs of the white poor and minorities.

Had chavin got a fair trial, he would be guilty of manslaughter and possibly 3rd degree murder. Being robbed of a fair trial , after a few years he will win on appeal- being awarded a new trial.
Had he received his constitutionality guaranteed fair trial, he would serve the 10-20 years he deserves.
Mad Max and the liberal media , robbed mr floyd of justice.
And upon his release the country will again, go through more violent protests.
Which in 2022-2024 will result in thousands of newly created criminals who fail to think for themselves and worship the fake news narrative.

When a troubled person is given a year in jail strictly for political reasons, we have a serious problem with our local justice system. As much as the national scene is distressing, this is reality and it is happening here. Andrea Harrington went after Durfee because of his politics. She does not like his politics because they are against her politics. If you were worried that DA Harrington’s inexperience would cost the county public safety, you were far wrong. She is inexperienced and stupid, that has been proven based on her behavior. But far worse is that she is politically motivated and vindictive. Be afraid.

Couldn’t agree more, even the people that roll their eyes when you bring up the blog to them agree with the majority of what is said. They just have to agree in small interactions or anonymously because doing so in public could result in losing a job, impacting their business, being called a racist, or any other label the establishment wants to come up with.

It also seems like the only place you can get a quick answer on a question or topic. I remember a few months back when I was pissed about an officer going into Trattoria for a violation in the middle of a pandemic. I still think it was wrong, but appreciated the quick response and explanation from the blog and officer. Imagine if all media worked liked that? The world would be a lot better of a place.

Now the far left Democrats (which seems to be most of them) are saying that if you disagree with anything they say, you are a racist. They are making everything about race from the filibuster to DC statehood. They themselves used the filibuster some 400 times, but of course they weren’t racists for doing so only Republicans are racists. They are telling so many lies and if we don’t go along with their lies, we are racists. So many people saw this disaster in the making, but did nothing about it. All warnings were ignored.

France has now faced the direct link between immigration and terrorism. They are tightening their borders unlike America, that during a pandemic, is telling everyone to pour into our country. At the same time the far left is weakening and demonizing our police, they are allowing so many potentially dangerous people into our country. At the same time they want to crack down on weapons, they are endangering all of us. The far left in this country is setting up a situation in which our country becomes so dangerous that they can go for a total gun grab. No guns and no police will mean lots of terrorist attacks for our country.

Has anyone mentioned to the mayor that no matter how much money she spends on flowers and other expensive beatification projects, the effect is greatly diminished if they are surrounded by trash.
Does anyone know who the lucky flower greehouses are that the city spends thousands of dollars to? Is this infor secret? And did they contribute to her campaign?

Hello Dan Valenti,

Pittsfield politics kicks off budget season tomorrow (Monday) evening. The joint meeting between the City Council and School Committee starts remotely at 6 p.m.  The release of Mayor Linda Tyer’s proposed fiscal 2022 budget will be presented to Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski in a little over 24 hours from now. Let the Kapanski family not forget about:

– Matt Kerwood’s estimated $14 million slush fund

– At least $16 million or more in Biden Buck$ direct aid to the Lovely Linda in 2021

What are your predictions, Dan Valenti? Where will all of the Kapanski Ka$h get spent by Pittsfield politics in fiscal year 2022 that begins in a little over 2 months from now on July 1st, 2021?

Best wishes,

Jonathan Melle
