A TRIBUTE TO ALL WHO DIED TOO SOON AND THOSE WHO CAME BACK NOT SOON ENOUGH

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, Memorial Day 2021) — On this day of remembrance, THE PLANET respectfully asks its readers and especially its commentators and respondents to honor the tenor and tone of today. Those of us who had loved ones that served, those of us who had loved ones that served and never came back, may we remain in deference to the day. May we elevate the somberness as a tribute.

We now present this Memorial Day poem by one of our own, that is, a Berkshire County resident.

For this one sacred and holy day, we present THE PLANET with no ads.

———- ooo ———-

THE YOUNG DEAD

BY EDITH WHARTON

Ah, how I pity the young dead who gave
All that they were, and might become, that we
With tired eyes should watch this perfect sea
Re-weave its patterning of silver wave
Round scented cliffs of arbutus and bay.

No more shall any rose along the way,
The myrtled way that wanders to the shore,
Nor jonquil-twinkling meadow any more,
Nor the warm lavender that takes the spray,
Smell only of sea-salt and the sun.

But, through recurring seasons, every one
Shall speak to us with lips the darkness closes,
Shall look at us with eyes that missed the roses,
Clutch us with hands whose work was just begun,
Laid idle now beneath the earth we tread—

And always we shall walk with the young dead.—
Ah, how I pity the young dead, whose eyes
Strain through the sod to see these perfect skies,
Who feel the new wheat springing in their stead,
And the lark singing for them overhead!

———- ooo ———-

In the photo, we see members of the Army’s 99th Infantry Division, 394 Battalion known as “The Battalion’ Babes.” THE PLANET‘s dad, PFC Gino Valenti, stands second from the right. Photo was taken somewhere in Germany, 1945, after the Battle of the Bulge. The 394th saw heavy action in the Bulge. Our father was a member of a rifle squad. Trust me, that flag was hard earned.

Like many of the guys who saw action on the front line, Dad was reluctant to talk about his experiences. He lived to be 96 years old. In that final year, he opened up about some of what he had seen. He did so modestly, in quiet tone. The stories were harrowing and the effect on the listener sobering.

———- 000 ———-

To everyone in this trying time of division and hostility, be well and realize that our differences do not have to define us. We can gain perspective. We can even put an end to war. Every day, we get the chance to make that choice.

Though it may never come, that day can come, and it would be the greatest tribute ever to all those who lost life prematurely for the just or unjust cause, for there is no such things as a “just war.” There are only unjust causes and the reactions to them.

Again, we ask those who wish to comment to leave a sentiment in honor of the day. THE PLANET shall employ the honor system for this and letting adherence or not do all the speaking.

Blessings to all.

I honor all of the American Soldiers who served and gave their lives in defense of our beloved country. I am very upset with the Holyoke Soldiers Home debacle where 76 Veterans died of Covid-19 over the past year. Governor Charlie Baker should take responsibility for what happened there. Politicians vote to send U.S. Soldiers to fight in wars, but then when Veterans return home, they go homeless, live in poverty, are unemployed or under-employed, have to fight state and federal VA bureaucracies for their benefits and healthcare, and face episodes of domestic conflict with their respective families. When I go to the VA hospital, Veterans never judge each others’ military service, but rather, we support each other as brothers and sisters. One thing all Veterans say in unity is that Veterans never want to see or hear of a homeless Veteran. In closing, no one should have to experience homelessness, poverty, and so on, especially Veterans and their families.

As a veteran myself this day brings deep sadness. I have many uncles, and cousins along with my own father who served during war time. When I visit the cemetary today I will look upon the gravestones of three who died in battle. I will also recall two others who lived out their lives in the Northhamton Va facility because they were too psycologically damaged to live among society.

And I am hoping that they cannot see beyond their graves that which happened at the Capitol building on January 6th, 2021. That is certainly not what they fought and died for. And for all those serving now, I hope your service will not be in vain as a result of home grown terrorism which has apparently infested a significant portion of our government already.

Today we must all remember our veterans who died for our freedom. All of our military personnel deserve our respect and thanks for all they do to protect us. We must always realize that the freedom we have in this country is unknown in many parts of the world.

My father saw WWII coming, signed up early 1940. Wanted to be navy, but was colorblind. Lucky for him, guys he signed up with are still on the USN Arizona.

Dad ended up 8th Air Force, Brittan and Europe.

Favorite Uncle was navy in pacific. His ears got damaged, shooting the big guns. He used to love to hunt, but wouldn’t touch a gun again after the war, besides protection.

Thank you to all our military people both active and retired. Also thank you to all the people who died for our freedoms and the world’s. As I read bot the Planet and the Hate rag I couldn’t believe the complete difference, The Planet asking for somber reverence and the hate rag continuing with their constant hate. Also found it funny that they had a picture of a very elderly person able to get out to vote in person! I will end in wishing everyone a peaceful Memorial Day and I hope God is still shining down on OUR great nation!

With the erasure of American history, America’s newest greatest generation ( our middle east warriors) is sadly being forgotten.

While audy Murphy was revered, Dakota Meyer is unknown.

Both received Medal of Honor, while alive. Pretty rare .

How quickly America now forgets it’s real heroes.

Those who fail to learn the lessons of the past , are destined to repeat it.

God Bless those who sacrifice all for our country.

Sick views is a little harsh. It wasn’t bad at all. Dissing Kampala’s comments and honoring 911 is not an insult or disrespect to our vets?

DA issues bags with flag adopted by white supremacists and the far right and provides paper with the photo of it.

comment image
PHOTO PROVIDED BY THE BERKSHIRE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE

The black flag, facing forward, means no quarter and no surrender. Meaning prisoners will be shot.
It is often displayed by white supremacists, alt right, and neo-nazi groups.
It means they will not surrender this country to non-whites and if confronted by law enforcement they will not surrender.

Even in its best meaning, it’s a military or law enforcement subdued patch for tactical use.
SWAT would use this patch as the bust down the doors of crack houses.

I’d love to shake the hand of the guy who conned her into buying those. Those tactical bags too how stupid. I count about 30 bags, that’s $500 a pop. She should do what other more practiced DA’s office do, issue emergency Visa cards loaded with $500. They can’t be used to buy booze or cigs directly and you can only draw $100 for cash.

Wrong Way screwing up again and doing a press release about it.

You have spent way to much time in the office. Then come on here trying to be smart. More practiced DA’s office?> now listen carefully this is the part where you the butt on a chair all the time puts that big shoe directly into your mouth. Convenience stores love those cards and others will actually sell the cards for half price just to get some quick cash. The rules you speak of sorry but they ring the booze and cigs as grocery items. Same happens with the EBT snap and all the other plastic cards. Tell you what i will give you a Burger king crown for the effort.

So are you saying sex trafficking victims will be perpetrators of fraud? Wow you are one sick and twisted individual. What kind of scumbag supporter of Wrong Way Harrington are you?

Just when this board can’t get any lower with stupid you pop in and accuse victims of being criminals. A victim will abide by the rules 99% percent of the time. The other 1% is where the don’t, it is because they are being coerced.
If only there was an office in Berkshire County that had an investigative unit and resources to investigate EBT fraud. You know a group of law enforcement that sure aren’t doing sex crimes investigations or Williams College rape follow ups. What was the calculation? 78 cases in two years? So that means twice as many now.
Law enforcement can easily pull all ebt transactions at a store, they do it all the time. No warrant required it’s part of the stores contract to take ebt. The tell-tale is milk ring ups. Multiple milk purchases to a card in short succession = fraud. The troopers in her office know this, they used to go after it. They don’t anymore. They busted A-mart, the gas station on wahconah across from the baseball stadium.
Idiot Wrong Way Harrington provided the Berkshire Eagle the photo with her staff proudly promoting a racist flag on the backpacks. She’s as dumb as they get.
Also what should the two trafficking victims in the last two years do with underwear that’s not their size? Clothes not meant for them? Triplicates of stuff they’ve gotten from the Red Cross?
Also maybe don’t post pictures of the bags because that just marks people who have those very distinct tactical police backpacks as victims. Why would she do that to sex trafficking victims? She needed another useless photo-op to get her campaign rolling.

After Harrington fired the highly experienced victim witness staff she couldn’t find people to replace them so she had to drop the requirement that employees have a bachelor’s degree. That’s how you end up with stupid stunts like this and worse.

Memorial Day is a day we remember those that gave their life defending democracy in America. They say democracy is the best form of government as long as you can keep it.Less than 6 months ago we almost lost it at the direction of President Donald J Trump on1/6/2021.A domestic enemy of our democracy was exposed on that day and the threat is still real and that war is still being fought and the fear and hatred of that man still exist. The battle for the right to vote is now in t he states. American republicans do not accept Senator Biden as President as they wait day by day for Billionaire Don Trump to emerge in a violent takeover of our government to make him President for life. This would be our last memorial day.

Luckily Barry does his walks at 3am and just missed it. I dont undetstand how this happens, we have gun laws to protect us and a DA who’s too busy handing out backpacks full of deodorant

We need to defund the police more. Wait until tonight’s council meeting when all the woke hipsters will complain about the new police station on the agenda.

Off the main subject matter:
I hope the money that paid for this park included a Shot Spotter….the Ultra Deluxe model because a standard unit will be burned out (or shot up) in a few summer months!
https://www.berkshireeagle.com/news/local/park-and-parcel-for-the-future-pittsfield-celebrates-opening-of-westside-riverway/article_48d22df2-c206-11eb-b48d-eb79dc3b0e13.html
And, I understand they nixed a proposed footbridge being built between the park & John Street. THEY said it was too much $$ but methinks it was 86’ed because it would be an entry/egress to the park for person(s) with nefarious intent, in addition to being an attractive nuisance resulting in falls, injuries and drownings.
What a knee jerk, feel good joke. I see 7 parks on a Google map within the West Side perimeter of 1 x .5 miles; WALKING DISTANCE!!!  Each has its own little gang, er, “clique” to be PC.
And all off this hoopla while Springside is being parted out to special interest groups and Clapp is ½ finished & Waconah Park is, well, still being Waconah Park; a muddy mess and the Common is the “great melting pot!”
The other parks are suffering, too, but are getting less publicity.
Typical Democratic tactics; throw money at it!!!
