PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

[ED. NOTE: In the following column, THE PLANET uses aliases for the actual names of the students involved. We do have the identities of these students, but we have decided to withhold them].

———- ooo ———-

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY NOV. 24, 2021) — Clearly, SOMETHING happened at Richmond Consolidated School to send bucolic Richmond into a frenzy. But what, exactly?

We may never know, exactly, but THE PLANET‘s investigation turned up enough of the pieces for us to reasonably surmise.

Investigative journalists almost never look for “the smoking gun” for the simple reason that it’s almost never there. The better analogy is the 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. Answers arrive piecemeal, in bits and bytes. Each piece of information must be compared with each of the others until a picture begins to emerge. Clearly, investigation journalism, like all detective work, involves induction more than deduction. It involves the assembly of pieces (clues) to reach a conclusion that stands beyond a reasonable doubt.

That’s what THE PLANET has faced with the Richmond matter. We have heard from both constituencies, those making serious allegations and those who have refuted those characterizations of what occurred.

Events only unfold place once, in real time. Everything after that deals with recollections, replays, and reconstructions of the past, giving rise to lying, manipulation, faulty memory, and all sorts of noise to intrude. The good investigator goes into a situation in neutral, pulls together as much factual evidence as possible, along with testimony of witnesses and interested observers, to arrive at conclusions. He or she goes where the evidence takes them. Those conclusions may be right or wrong.

———- ooo ———-

As readers will recall, the referred-to incidents at Richmond CS include:

  • The actions and reactions of students in 7th grade during which led to English teacher Rachel Kanz being contacted physically and injured
  • The claim by a girl in the same 7th grade of a sexual assault
  • The claim that this assault was told to staff and administration but not reported by them in accordance with the law

These are the charges, but what actually happened to cause the tense atmosphere and low morale that pervades in a school that has for so long had a sterling reputation for quality education?

THE “ASSAULT” ON RACHEL KANZ

Didn’t happen, at least not as initially conveyed. She was, however, in the wrong place at the wrong time and did get hit physically.

In early October, a 7th grade male student (let’s call him Natan) shot a rubber band into the face of a male classmate we shall call Jules. The projectile hit Jules in the forehead, causing him to bolt out of his seat and attempt to retaliate. Sources say Kanz — a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English teacher — wasn’t in the room at the time but heard the commotion. Sources say Roger Kohler — a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math teacher — was presiding over the class.

As Kanz entered the room to see what was going on, the seething Jules, who was rushing to get at his attacker, knocked into Kanz, sending her hard into a wall, injuring her arm. It appears that Jules, described as “an often-picked-on” 200-pounder, did not intend to hit the teacher.

Kanz went to see the school nurse. The injury to her arm was evident but did not appear to be serious, sources say. Kanz then left for a previously scheduled and approved early exit that afternoon, sources say. This supports what we heard from administrative sources, that Kanz did not “leave to go to the hospital” but to attend to personal business. Sources say she had cleared this with the administration, who had arranged for a substitute to cover her classes. The next day, Kanz did see a doctor to examine her. THE PLANET doesn’t know the results of that examination. Sources also say that later in the day, the day Jules plowed into her, Kanz attended a party. That, together with the fact that she did not see a doctor until the day after, suggests that the injury was minor.

We have requested comments from Kanz, but she has not gotten back to us.

Our verdict: Kanz was not “assaulted.” She was in the way. This does not excuse Jules’ behavior. Who knows what he would have done had he caught up with his tormentor?

THE CONTEXT FOR JULES’ BEHAVIOR

Jules left Stearns school in Pittsfield after 5th grade via school choice. He entered Richmond CS to begin middle school, sixth grade. All of us who have been through the educational gauntlet know that even under the best circumstances, coming into middle school as the “newbie” is bad enough. It doesn’t help that Jules, at least according to multiple sources, took his emotional problems from Stearns to Richmond. This begs the question: Why did this student leave Stearns, one of Pittsfield best schools? Was he “asked” to leave?

Sources say since he’s been at Richmond, he has been a troublemaker. One parent said, “There’s no question, yeah, he’s been a bully.” A staffer backed up this claim. For example, sources say he’s written a racial epithet using the word “nigger” in the boy’s bathroom and during art class wrote an anti-Semitic slur on a cup or mug. Over the summer, however, things began to spiral out-of-control. Sources say Jules shared with a group on Snapchat a photo of a naked girl of about middle-school age. The girl’s face was blurred, and it’s not known if the photo was of a Richmond girl or not. The photo did circulate to his classmates, however, causing some upset.

When school began in September, Jules became the target of a concerted bullying effort by some of his classmates. Apparently, according to one parent, “the kids decided to bully the bully.” This has included shunning, taunting, staring, and online harassment. The effects on Jules of this retaliatory bullying — the anti-bullying bullying, if you will — was cumulative, according to staff, and has been building up all semester, leading to “the final straw” after Nathan hit Jules in the face with a rubber band and the boy lost his cool.

For their actions, principal Dan Weston suspended Jules for 10 days. Meanwhile, staff overheard girls from the 7th grade class talking among themselves, saying “[When he gets back] Let’s do everything we can to frame [Jules].” On the very day Jules came back after serving his 10-day suspension, a girl in the class claimed Jules sexually harassed her.

THE SEXUAL HARASSMENT CLAIM

School sources say this was a false claim instigated by several 7th grade girls. The complainant claimed that on the first day after Jude returned to class after serving his 10-day suspension, he touched her inappropriately on the thigh. The girl, we’ll call her Laura, said she reported it to Cindy Bartlett, then the paraprofessional for 7th grade (Bartlett is now para for 5th grade). It was claimed that Bartlett told the girl not to go forward with the complaint.

Further investigation by THE PLANET strongly indicates that this is not what happened.

Actually, it appears that Bartlett had learned of the girls’ plan to frame Jude, and after Laura made her claim of improper contact, Bartlett told the girls “You report fact. You don’t report gossip of fantasy.”

In short, it appears that there was in fact no inappropriate behavior in that one case. Cristina Lenfest, the school nurse, did not report the incident simply because the incident never occurred. How does one “report” something that didn’t happen?

That said, have there been other harassment complaints? Have the school been completely transparent on every serious charge of misbehavior?

———- ooo ———-

In the final analysis, THE PLANET’s best guess at this point, barring the introduction of other information, the tempest at Richmond Consolidated Schools will be confined to a teapot not because of any official coverup but simply because of the storm’s makeup. It doesn’t appear to have enough truth to sustain continuance.

Here are the factors of this odd storm:

  • The school admits a troubled young man who transferred out of Stearns school in Pittsfield.
  • The 12-going-on-13-year-old boy perpetrates a series of bullying actions that were clearly a cry for help.
  • His 7th grade classmates decide to bully the bully.
  • The exacerbated tensions + the retaliatory actions of classmates boil over into the “Kanz incident.”
  • A girl makes a false claim of sexual harassment.
  • The situation becomes a conflagration after being fanned by outside parties.

There have been separate meetings, gatherings that may have legal consequences, in recent days. Last Tuesday (Nov. 16), a group of parents had a Zoom meeting to discuss the situation. Some parents later complained that the group included parties who do not have children at Richmond and thus “no skin in the game.” In the same week, the school and their attorney, Fred Dupre, met with parents and their attorney, Alan Righi.

Has all the information emerged? Will there be future bombshells?

THE PLANET remains open to any new information.

I am not surprised by Matt Kerwood and Mayor Linda Tyer successfully persuaded the majority rubberstamp City Council to raise the municipal tax rate by the predictable 5 percent margin tonight (Tuesday, 23-November-2021) and using $1.5 million instead of $2.5 million in “Free Cash” to offset the tax hike on Pittsfield taxpayers. It is always “Business as usual” in Pittsfield politics. Matt Kerwood and Mayor Linda Tyer are sitting on tens of millions of dollars in Biden Bucks and Slush Funds, but it is not even rational anymore in Pittsfield politics. Mayor Linda Tyer and CPA Barry Clairmont are multimillionaires who live an elitist Gated Community within feet of the Hancock border where they park their Lexus luxury cars at night, Matt Kerwood is a career Public Payroll Patriot who shuffles millions of dollars around city accounts to build his excessive Slush Funds, the City Council are mostly politically-connected hacks who are in the Lovely Linda’s proverbial pocket, and the School Committee are glorified defenders of Pittsfield’s indefensible Level 5 public schools. Trippy Country Buffet went from working for Godfather Jimmy Ruberto to working for Boston’s State House Dictators. Chrome Dome Adam Hinds lives in a $690,000 home in Amherst, Massachusetts, which is NOT in his Berkshire-based State Senate legislative district. PAC Man Richie Neal only represents K Street lobbyist firms, especially from the insurance industry. Maryland Ed Markey is still promising to save the world from global warming with all of his hot air speeches. Elizabeth Warren is always promising to fight for Main Street, but Wall Street is still winning. Joe Biden is in Nantucket this Thanksgiving holiday long weekend, which is as far away from Pittsfield as one can be while still vacationing in Massachusetts. Have you ever noticed that the so called free cash (which isn’t free by the way) is almost always the same amount? So in my opinion someone has to be calculating the numbers or making sure something isn’t spent and delayed, for that to happen. Which is ILLEGAL in my humble opinion.

So, like I said, after throwing Cindy Bartlett under the bus for days, there is no evidence she told a girl not to report a sexual assault. Let’s hope the Richmond Rabble Rousers fill this edition of the blog with apologies.

There is no evidence Jules was the bully and in thia case Dan he was clearly the victim. I wish he got a hold of Nathan and knocked him into next month. He was the victim here of an assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and the victim of a would be filing a false report. One felony, one misdemeanor. Why he left Stearns is conjecture at this point. Sounds like the ole picking on the fat kid. And the facts show Cindy did nothing wrong.

Speaking of picking on the fat kid, back in the day, say mid 1970’s, there was a fat kid in my neighborhood who heard a rumor that if he showed up at Crosby Junior High fat, some kids would squish him between the doors. So, he ran around the block, literally, all summer long before he entered Junior High. When he was tired, he would come back and hang out with us on the street corner, and when he caught his breath, he would be off to the races again. By the time school started, he was fit and trim. True story, (as Lyin’ Biden would say after telling another tall tale.)

Ugg, what I read above is that there was a concerted effort to falsely accuse a boy of mass sexual assault. If anyone knew that was going on then that is a crime that needs to be reported too.
Nothing said here makes me feel better except knowing Kanz wasn’t badly hurt.
Why was only one boy expelled?
Kanz is a great teacher and if she ran into another teachers’ room – out of her classroom — due to an incident — then that description is missing the point. Why did she fly in there when Kohler, a man, could have broken up the fight? How crazy was it?
I stick with my assessment of a scary school community that you don’t want your kids near.

Perhaps one of the reasons Jules left Stearns after 5th grade is because Stearns doesn’t have a sixth grade, Thankfully Bartlett Orchards has been exonerated. The first of this series referred to Cindy as Cindy Bartlett of Bartlett Orchards. At the time I thought for sure that business was somehow involved.

There are still many questions that are left hanging in the wind. Did the boy who assaulted with a rubber band get suspended? How about the girls who fabricated a story? If this Pittsfield boy has been picked on all year what has the school been doing? Is DCF involved? Has anyone called the police on the naked picture? Why didn’t the school come together to discuss all this earlier before it blew up on Social Media? And why are lawyers involved? Many, many unanswered questions.

Back in the day, if boys got suspended for shooting each other with rubber bands it would be an a girls school. Meanwhile, just a bit further south, causing a fake racial hatecrime and filing a false police report results in no punishment at all.

I went to catholic school Dan and nothing like that went on, at all, for the most part. Nuns were very abusive, and I recall the entire class being spanked with a yardstick once for something minor. I did get caught putting tacks on some girls chairs and for punishment, the nuns laid out tacks all over two chairs in front of entire class, and made me and my cohort sit on them, via brute force of the nuns, in front of entire class. And one kid got ink all over his hands from playing with a pen, and he was literally, shoved in the metal waste bin in the corner of class, and made to stay there.

“handcuffs” I’m glad I didn’t go to school with you. As for ordinary school yard fist fights, even Opie, sheriff Taylor’s son, got into fist fights. Back in the day, getting a black eye was depicted as a normal part of boyhood. While you’re right about the FBI, NSA, CIA, KGB, and worst of all, DSS/DCF and the NAACP, coming down on you like a ton of bricks for an ordinary fist fight, which to my knowledge every kid who got into an ordinary fist fight survived, physically and emotionally. Now I can’t be sure about the FBI, NSA, CIA, or the KGB on ordinary fist fights, but I have no doubt that DSS/DCF would use an ordinary fist fight as an excuse to remove children from their parent’s custody, and then place those same children into DCF certified foster homes were they’re very likely to get abused, neglected, molested, raped, shot and murdered.

Mass.gov Dec. 2017 – Bump Audit Finds Massachusetts DCF Failed to Report Rapes, Abuse, and Other Crimes Against Children in DCF Custody. DCF Does Not Report Incidents of Abuse, Neglect, Gunshot wounds, Death, Rape, and/or Sexual Abuse, of Children in its care.

The school, the police and the court should document the fact that this disturbed young 12/13 year old mean Richmond? girl has maliciously made false allegations of a sexual nature. The fact that she tells lies should follow her into her adult life, because I doubt she done making up lies. Maybe next time she’ll add a fabricated kidnap lie to her fabricated sex crime lie. Even at her young age this girl obviously understands the power of her fabricated crime of a sexual nature lie. Also, where did the troubled 200 pound bully, a product of the Pittsfield School system, get his fleshy paws on photos of a naked young girl? Is the child in the photos from Pittsfield or Richmond? She may actually be a victim.

Well, it’s been all day now and I haven’t read one single apology here to Cindy Bartlett from any of the Richmond Rabble Rousers who flew off the handle and wanted her burned at the stake for something she didn’t do, based on mistruths, half truths, rumor, social media nonsense, innuendo and conjecture. I will give until sundown tomorrow for all handles that owe Cindy an apology to post, and then I will be naming names.

The Richmond Rabble Rousers are Craig Swinson and Kathy Nagy Lloyd.

Yeah and I’m waiting for the DA who killed the anti bullying program for the schools to take ownership for this crap in her own town.

And Richmond called on the previous DAs office many times to come in and speak because they were having issues. It’s nothing new there, just the DA is new – the one who eliminated the department and replaced it with a director who just shows his face at meetings for her.

Same to you Johnathan and all my fellow Planeteers. And thanks be to Dan for hosting this forum. Let’s enjoy a holiday while we can because the lefty loons want to flush Thanksgiving down the toilet along with Columbus Day and Christmas will be next.

Okay. Seeing that sundown came with no apologies to Cindy Bartlett, here is who owes
Cindy Bartlett an apology -Mad Dad, who started this rumor ball rolling, and UrMom. Plenty of others made more blanket assertions but these two are the ones that owe Cindy an apology.
