THE THIRD MAN: G-MAN MUST DECIDE … IT’S NOW OR NEVER

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY MAY 10, 2023) — In THE PLANET‘s far-too-premature coverage of Pittsfield’s mayoral race, a campaign in the first half-mile of a marathon, we have focused on the two frontrunners, city council president Peter Marchetti and former Ward 6 councilor John Krol.
There’s a Third Man, however, as in Graham Greene’s novella and Carol Reed’s classic film. He’s Craig Gaetani.
THE PLANET has known the G-Man for a million years, going back to his stint with the best drum and bugle corps in city history, The Cavaliers. It’s a friendly relationship that has had its ups and downs depending on sunspots, subterranean waters, swamp gas, and the shifting sands upon which G-Man stands.

If character defines a person, you can make the case G-Man has it. He served this country honorably in Vietnam, came back from a horrific back injury while at Krofta, and, most recently, rose from the dead following a stroke and other medical challenges. No citizen attends more meetings or makes his voice known as Gaetani.
Like the Energizer Rabbit, he keeps up a relentless pursuit — but of what?

Pursuit of past glory? His Warholian 15 minutes? An attention fix? Some combination? Something else? Only G-Man knows for sure.
And you know what? It’s irrelevant. The pertinent fact is that he is twice on the candidates’ list, for mayor and Ward 6 councilor, a seat presently occupied by Dina “Climate Change” Lampiasi. Gaetani did the same last time he balloted, signing up in 2015 for both offices.
You can’t do both, and he withdrew in 6, making the preliminary election for mayor, which meant nothing. Simply harvesting signatures does that for a bloke.
Naturally, he didn’t come close, pulling 3%.
It wasn’t because of his ideas. It was because he didn’t campaign.
If that’s. the same this time around, he’s wasting his time and everyone else’s. If he actually campaigns, it will be a different story.

That’s the big problem about the G-Man. He hasn’t formed a committee, solicited money, or invested in the necessary accouterments such as lawn signs, bumper stickers, buttons, ads, or literature; in short, he hadn’t organized. In comparison, as of April 30, Marchetti had $13,398.83 cash on hand. Krol had 9,108.51. A safe minimum to run for a ward post would be about $1,200.
A person who does that “runs” for office just to “run” for office. THE PLANET should know. We did it in 1991 in our secret identity (Dan Valenti, mild-mannered reporter), just as we were about to enter into the public fray as a columnist for two local papers and as host of a daily, morning-drive talk show. Our purpose: to see the political process from the inside. Man, we we have stories!
That’s basically what Gaetani did in 2015. He did it just to do it. That won’t cut it this time around.
Token candidacies have abounded in city history (Henry Hebert, Guy Noto, Donna Walto, Anthony Andrews, Ed Baptiste, ad infinitum ad nauseam). You know the deal.
- Take out papers
- Get enough signatures to get on the ballot.
- Then pretty much check out, without a chance of winning.

If G-Man is doing what he did in 2015, he will get the same result — probably a tad more than 3% because there’s so much anger in a local electorate thirsting for a legitimate third alternative.
If Gaetani is serious about this, he will do the steps required, which we listed. He needs an organization and he has to spend some money. That is the stark reality. He will need less of each if he pulls out of the mayor’s race and declares for Ward 6. It would take a long shot’s long shot for him to become mayor, but if he puts everything he’s got into Ward 6, he could upset Lampiasi. His entrance into that race might even scare her out of it.
He needs to do more than attempt to use THE PLANET as his campaign website by posting emails boosting himself under fake names. That game ends today.

THE PLANET for one would love to see him in public office, just to see what would happen. He would stir things up, become the kick in the ribs for the local political Establishment (aka the The Suits or Gobsigs), and have a forum with gravitas with which to try and advance his agenda.
He’s a loose canon, you say?

It has been a little over 50 years of Pittsfield’s shrinking middle-class families that has caused Pittsfield’s long-term diminishing tax base with record high tax and spending municipal budgets, public debts and other liabilities that total in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Poor fictional Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, one of the last of Pittsfield’s middle-class (fictional) families, who will have to fork over nearly 9 percent more of their hard-earned income in addition to paying for the ongoing water and sewage fee hikes to the current Mayor, Linda Tyer, who herself lives in a mansion in a Gated Community with her litigious third husband, the multimillionaire CPA Barry Clairmont, and then in 2024, to the next would-be Mayor of Pittsfield politics – possibly Mayor Banker, Mayor Unemployed or Mayor Fringe.
Economic and Financial Reality to Pittsfield politics is to what Insanity and Injustice is to The Twilight Zone! Why not propose a $1 billion municipal budget and give the vested and special interests more taxpayer dollars than they ever dreamed of?

“Mayor Tyer is proposing a $205.6 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Here’s what that means for taxes”

PITTSFIELD — Mayor Linda Tyer says that her final budget proposal as mayor for a $205.6 million budget is a “maintenance budget” that will cover rising employee costs in a new letter to the City Council.
The proposed fiscal 2024 budget — which represents an 8.9 percent increase over this fiscal year’s $188.8 million budget — would direct $109.3 million to the municipal operating budget, $78 million to the Pittsfield Public Schools budget and $18 million to the city’s water, wastewater and sewer budgets.
“The costs associated with salary increases for both school and city employees, identified as priorities by both the City Council and the School Committee, have limited investments in new initiatives,” Tyer wrote.
The letter and proposal was included in the City Council’s Tuesday night agenda packet and was referred to several Committee of the Whole meetings over the next month.
These hearings, which will be hosted at 6 p.m. in City Council chambers on May 17, 24, 30 and June 5, will be the council and public’s opportunity to weigh in on the proposed spending.
The bigger budget means the city needs to raise more in property taxes. This year, city leaders are proposing raising $109.1 million, a nearly $8 million increase — or 7.8 percent — over the taxes raised this year.
Tyer plans to use $1 million in the city’s free cash — the unrestricted funds left over from the city budgets and operations of the prior fiscal year — to cover a portion of the money the city would need to raise to cover the budget and partially offset the burden to taxpayers.
Property taxes, along with $72.7 million in state aid and about $18.2 million from sewer and water bills, would be the primary funding sources for the city’s budget.
Tyer highlighted wages — $3 million for school employees and about $1.02 million for city employees — as well as a $1.5 million increase in health insurance costs and a $816,000 increase in the city’s retirement contributions as major drivers for the bigger budget this year.
A nearly $700,000 increase in the city’s solid waste collection and disposal costs is also pushing the budget upward.

He is the only candidate actually for the actual people. He absolutely cannot do worse than Tyer has done with Marchetti at her side. And both Marchetti AND Krol look to me to be out of the exact same mold as Tyer. Same shit different day. And if it were to come out that the special interests have put up and are backing both Krol and Marchetti, not really caring which one wins because they are both puppets, I would not be surprised.
If Gaetani wins the people at least have a chance. With the other two the special interests will continue to eat your pocketbook. And your children’s pocketbook. And your dogs pocketbook if they can get at it.

The Child Rape Charges stem from when the police chief was a school resource officer. Well, at least the Hopkinton police chief has been charged. Pittsfield’s Chief of Police, Michael Wynn gets to leave his shit-stain on Pittsfield as he rides off into the sunset with his undeserved taxpayer funded pension after his inglorious performance whilst rising through the ranks of his corrupt PPD.
Also, when is Rinaldo going to stop beating that dead horse to death? Cops are not going to intervene when their fellow thugs are suffocating, brutalizing, violating, and/or snuffing the life out of someone. Actually, in my experience, not only are cops not going to intervene, but those depraved savage pigs go all hog-wild when they’ve snared someone, and they’re not squealing on each other.

Dishonesty is a frequent problem. The records document perjury, tampering with evidence or witnesses and FALSIFYING REPORTS. Those must be the reports you’re referring to that cops are busy typing.
But then, when one considers the fact that LESS than 10% of dirty cops ever get investigated, this isn’t even the tip of the iceberg of police corruption and police misconduct. Types of police officer perpetrated misconduct includes among others, coerced false confession, intimidation, false arrest, false imprisonment, falsification of evidence, spoliation of evidence, police perjury, witness tampering, police brutality, police corruption, racial profiling, unwarranted surveillance, unwarranted searches, and unwarranted seizure of property.

I was just reading a letter to the editor on I Berkshires this dumb bitch said she was sick to her stomach that it got shot down. This for sure would have killed the college and became a burden on the city and residents. If she is so heart sick buy a few house and move them in. The college used to be full and students and parents visited businesses and supported the economy.
The problem is that she speaks of a real problem. The working poor here cannot afford rent in even the worst quality buildings. They face homelessness But the State is not interested in OUR homeless people, they want us to take theirs first.
The Catholic churches in Pittsfield have consolidated.They could no longer afford to run the bigger church system.They kept hanging on year to year asking for more money from the faithful and it was not there.The City of Pittsfied is 6 years behind the Catholic church with no end in sight as the are asking for more to run a failed school system……There are only 1500 kids divided into two High School buildings which have more square footage than 5 Home Depots…..it is a ridiculous waste of money.PHS has memories for many residents but the building is close to 100 years old.The entire exterior is failing from concrete walks and step to outside lighting to playing field and parking.We need to put our shrinking student population into one Taconic building.There are unused classrooms at PHS and some classes have 6 kids in them……We need a council and Mayor to recognize the future.

I completely agree with Dan and would like to see Gman get off his rump roast, spend some of his alleged millions and campaign in earnest for the Ward 6 seat. Dina needs to be voted out, she is a dummy. Gman on the city council would be good for the hardworking taxpayers of Pittsfield.
One or two or even three city councilors are not going to be able to change one bad thing about Pittsfield’s government. Charles annoys them but that is about it. As Ward 6 city councilor, Craig would drive them nuts but not change one overall council vote for his whole term. This cabal is all encompassing throughout the departments. In order for any real effective change one needs to cut the head off the snake and start over at the top. Craig does not give a shit about the embedded power structure and will speak out where so many others are afraid and that is the only type of personality that is going to change anything in Pittsfield.
If you are just loving the ever increasing city budgets and fees and taxes vote Krol or Marchetti. These people have been telling us they cannot find any budget cuts, no duplication of services or waste. And that is because they are not looking, they are not even trying. Neither of them offer any hope. I would like to see a storm trooper in the corner office going over budgets and replacing special interest puppets. Get some knowledgable department heads in and fix the roads and sunken manholes that are wrecking cars.
How many city vehciles are there? 100, 200, 300???They are all over and most of them look pretty new. Does every city employee have a city vehicle? I reported a serious crime a few years ago. To this day I’ve never been able to get a report from the PPD. Every time I asked for a report, the detective assigned to the unsolvable case informed me that the case is still open, and obviously still unsolvable. Despite the fact that I was able to provide actual evidence of the perpetrator, and yet the PPD still couldn’t solve the case. I was told, not by the cops, that the perpetrator is a CI. So, I guess that explains why the PPD has never been able to solve the case of dangerous untouchable violent crime wave. The last time I spoke with the detective he said that providing me with a police report would compromise their investigation. And that was a while ago.
