(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE WEST, WEDNESDAY JULY 24, 2024) — If THE PLANET told you a mere few days ago that (a) Donald Trump would be shot by a would-be assassin and (b) barely more than a week later, one of the two presidential candidates would have to withdraw from the race, you would have assumed what?
You would have assumed that Trump was either dead or physically couldn’t carry on, that the GOP would be frantically searching for a replacement, and that Biden-Harris would have smooth sailing.
But no.
You know what happened, and with the chaos level ratcheted up to DEFCON 1, America truly finds itself in peril. You hear it every four years, that the upcoming election is the most important in the history of the United States. This one, on Nov. 5, might actually be.

There’s also this consideration. If Biden isn’t fit to campaign, how much less can he carry out the duties of POTUS? If he doesn’t resign, he leaves America in the hands of a controlled, enfeebled man incapable of finding the door to leave a room, let alone making national decisions. Foreign leaders understand this, if the Democrats don’t. The problem with Biden resigning is that Kackles becomes president. Talk about making Biden look like George Washington.

J.B. Pritzker and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, a former NASA astronaut, has also recently emerged as a potential dark horse contender.
No denying that Kacklin’ has the inside track, but, given her performance as Veep, she still has plenty of time to, well, blow it.

To the editor: Imagine our disappointment when we opened the Friday edition of The Berkshire Eagle and did not find any photos or mention of the Republican convention.
Not one photo, not one inch of print devoted to this impacting l news. Whether Republican or Democrat, I believe that The Eagle owes its readers unbiased reporting from both sides. “Out of sight, out of mind” is not going to work in erasing Donald Trump and the Republican platform from voters’ minds.
When I wrote for The North Adams Transcript under Lew Cuyler and Maynard Leahey many years ago, the one thing that was stressed to me over and over was “write the story the way it unfolds and write the truth. Keep your opinions to yourself.” It seems to me The Eagle’s editors flunked that class.
I’ve always been convinced that The Berkshire Eagle, like most other major newspapers, was biased and leaned heavily pro-Democratic.
I predict that when the Democratic Convention is held, The Eagle will have front-page photos and articles of the entire proceedings. If and when Kamala Harris shows up in Pittsfield, I can’t wait to read interviews and news ad nauseum about her appearance. Oh, and front-page photographs, in color.
I’ll be very surprised if this criticism makes The Eagle.

The 83-year-old man whom I befriended at my local diner passed away. We would love to see each other at the counter and we loved to talk about finance and his investments. He would give his money to young adults for their education, and teach them about saving and investing money. When the young adults did well in school or college, they would say that my elderly friend would be proud of them for their academic achievements.
Life is short. When I lived in the Berkshires as a youth and young adult, my brother and I still talk about our long gone elderly friends back the 1980’s and 1990’s decades. My dad, Bob, who was politician back then in the Berkshires, is now 80. My mom, who was a public school teacher back then in the Berkshires has Stage 4 cancer for life and she is undergoing aggressive cancer treatments. My family is from Pittsfield (Massachusetts), which is a cancer cluster small city full of GE’s industrial chemicals called PCBs.
I am 49 years old now. I hope that I will live around another 30 years or so, but one never knows when one is going to pass on. Life is short. It is sad when one loses a friend.
