PARSING LUMPY’S SYNTAX LEADS TO A NEW ‘DAY OF LIGHT’
BY DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY JUNE 11, 2025) — THE PLANET may soon be sending a copy of Dan Valenti’s best-selling textbook Taming the Terror of Talk: Becoming a Confident Speaker to Bitchfield Mayor Lumpy.
He could use it.
Recently, Lumpy issued a proposal–now being endlessly nitpicked by subcommittees, ad hoc panels, consultants, and Judge Crater (a classic Bitchfield process to avoid actual making decisions)–to end squatting (and shitting) on public property. So far so good.
Not long ago, however, the mayor addressed the city council’s public health and safety subcommittee. All dialogue guaranteed verbatim, as Howie would say.
- “[The ordinance] never has to see the day of light if we come up with a solution.”
Good one, that “day of light” bit. Lumpy, obviously caught up in the Rapture and speaking in tongues, speaks here of some sort of Biblical reckoning. Upon hearing these words, councilor Alisa Costa-Plenty reached into her pocketbook for her Devil Dogs. THE PLANET should break it to the mayor that Bitchfield won’t be seeing “day of light” any time soon.

- “I think the mayor’s office can be a wonderful tool for bringing people together, like mayor you do with the, but I don’t know if this is going to get us where we want to be …”
THE PLANET submitted this quote to 10 world-class linguists of our acquaintance. Five immediately resigned. Three sold all their worldly possessions, gave the money to the poor, and went to dance on a cliff in France. One joined the Mickey Mouse Club. One had to be committed to a locked psychiatric ward. And do we have to add commentary on the mayor’s statement that his office is “a tool?”
- “I want to begin kind of like I did a couple weeks ago, or maybe it was only last week, by publicly thanking councilor Costa for slowing down the process.”
Where does one begin? Let’s start with ” … kind of like I did …” Note the hesitance, the indecisiveness. Lumpy doesn’t want to begin LIKE HE DID, but KIND OF LIKE HE DID. Next, he’s not sure if it was two weeks ago or last week. Time sure flies when you’re having fun. Finally, he thanks Costa-Plenty for “slowing the process down.” That’s like thanking a tomato for being red. “Slowing the process down” is all The Kapanskis get in Bitchfield, unless it’s some shady deal “They” don’t want the public to know about. Then its Duck Dodgers moving at the speed of light.
- “I appreciate the conversations that her and I have had offline regarding this.”
“Her and I??” E.B. White, George Orwell, Edwin Newman, and Harold Bloom, please, inform the mayor that the correct form is “she and I”. In the corner, THE PLANET sees Richard Perlman and Abba Eban shivering. And what’s the deal with “offline” conversations. Sounds to us like Lumpy’s just admitted to a violation of the Open Meeting Law.
- “Even if this ordinance is passed, nothing will change …”
Holy hairballs. If that is the case, Mr. Mayor, then WHY ON EARTH BOTHER?
Buckle up, Mary Jane and Joe K. Looks like the “armies of the road” will be fouling up your public spaces for some time to come. It’s got to the point where Downtown Pittsfield Inc. has made Turd Hopping an official downtown pursuit. Bonus points allowed if the plop is steaming.
If all of this Alphabet Soup has you gumming your oatmeal, THE PLANET apologizes. We hope you emerge from your drooling with your bib having done its job.
After that, you can join us here at the Fortress in welcoming the new “day of light.”

I heard Marchetti is not releasing the school fiasco report because he was afraid you would pick it apart for its grammar and overall lack of clarity. Otherwise he would have shared it with the taxpayers like he said he would. Like they all said they would before they clammed up like lockjaw victims.
MEAN
That’s one I haven’t heard. How one speaks reflects one’s thinking, though not as much as how one writes.
June 11, 2025
Hello blogger Dan Valenti,
Please listen to the public radio news story on the passing of the 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics fiscal year 2026 operating budget.
https://www.wamc.org/news/2025-06-11/pittsfield-city-council-signs-off-on-226-2-million-budget-for-26
Please explain to us how the city’s spending spree increased by 2.8-percent year-over-year – PLUS: $4 million in so-called FREE CASH.
If one adds in the $4 million in free cash to the 2.8-percent operating budget increase, would it be the same 5-percent spending increase?
Please explain to us what the median residential property owner in Pittsfield will pay in local taxes and fees in fiscal year 2026 that begins on July 01st, 2025 to its end date on June 30, 2026.
I estimate that the median city residential tax and fee payer will pay Pittsfield City Hall somewhere close to $7,000 in fiscal year 2026.
Lastly, the just passed city operating budget still increases spending in fiscal year 2026. There were no cuts. The local taxpayers are going to pay more in local taxes and fees in fiscal year 2026.
Best wishes,
Jon Melle
marketz knows how to do two things. Out-fake Dan and raise taxes.
The-2 Pete’s Pittsfield politics’ WAR against the UNDERCLASS residents of Bitchfield, Massachusetts is one for the ages!
They TAX the Hell out of the fictional Kapanski’s. Their spending spree of Kapanski Ka$h is in the World Records’ cooked books. But if you end up in the UNDERCLASS, then it is word salad speech for your sorry ass that makes a toilet out of public spaces.
The kick in the ass with all of this…(I won’t write it)….is that starting on July 01st, 2025, they will spend $226.2-million-plus of our taxpayer dollars through June 30, 2026.
Jon Melle
I lost a lot of confidence in (Lumpy) Marchetti when he issued his 100 day gag order to criticize him. He would do himself a favor by listen to you for sure Dan, but when the phone doesn’t ring you’ll know it’s him. He would also do well by listening to the people of Pittsfield but my hopes of that happening are slip too.
News Alert
Pittsfield (Massachusetts) is the U.S.A., which is a FREE COUNTRY where We the People have the right to FREE SPEECH.
Who the Hell does Peter Marchetti think he is?
Mayor Peter Marchetti publicly stated that he wanted a 90-day grace period free from criticisms. He publicly stated that he is NOT a fan of social media public forums, blogs, and the like.
Does Peter Marchetti think that Pittsfield is in Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and so on?
Mayor Peter Marchetti’s anti-panhandling ordinance violated the Constitution. He did not even have the data and reports to back it up.
Mayor Peter Marchetti’s anti-homeless ordinance is cruel because he doesn’t provide alternatives to the underclass residents who sleep in public spaces.
Lastly, please name one thing that the 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics has done for positive change in the most corrupt city government in human history!
Jon Melle
My question would be, given that he was groomed and suckled by Tyer, why did you have a lot of confidence in him in the first place?
like the way you think Meanwhile I don’t live in Bitchfiled, however since Lumpy was elected by the voters he must of gathered a lot of confidence in in the majority of voters. Hopefully someone will challenge him in the next cycle though and run a spirited campaign against him.
I agree with you, Ron. I hope that Mayor Peter Marchetti will be voted out of elected office in 2027! He is one of the WORST Mayors of Bitchfield in our lifetime.
There is going to be 1 Trump military parade the even Republicans wont attend. There is going to be 2000 protests around the country to demand Trump and Republicans with ICE remove illegal murderers rapers and felons with due process…..Musk told the world Trump is in the Epstien file participating with young children
Are you the mayor’s speechwriter by any chance?
Offline is, and has been where most of Bitchfield’s “meat and potatoes” of Bitchfield business takes place. That’s where they actually say, what they really mean
and mean what they say.
Yes, OPIE. I found that “offline” comment most interesting … and revealing.
Yes the mayor is stuck isn’t he? If he tries to walk that statement back it looks bad, and if he moves forward without acknowledging it he looks bad.
What’s a girl to do?
We all know what they really say behind the public’s back.
I think it goes something like this:
Bend over Kapanski’s so the we can shove it up your….
That is why we have blogger Dan Valenti. To fight for the Kapanski’s so that they can stand straight with pride and breath the clean air of FREEDOM.
Trump had a United States Senator pushed out of a hearing in L A ….Wow !
He was pushed out because he was disruptive and thought he had the podium. You try that at a City Council meeting – you’ll be given the senatorial treatment there too.
Are you really that DNC propaganda brainwashed or just an idiot? I can’t decipher. Maybe both….
Just like Sir Chaz mentioned, at the next Bitchfield Cety Clowncil Meeting, start yelling and then charge towards Mayor Lumpy or CC Prez Wimpy White, and then report back to The Planet the results of your experiment.
You’ll probably get a little rougher treatment than the Senator got, but maybe knocking a little sense in you couldn’t hurt.
Best of luck.
Protesters at parade will either act like pussys or heir Trump will have them harshly ejected.
This upcoming Saturday, Flag Day, Trump’s 79th birthday, the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, etc., will be a day for the history books. The Swamp’s military parade. Major U.S. cities will have big protests.
Yeah, the “No Kings” protest is bought and paid for by the CCP and other Marxist organizations hoping to destroy the USA.
With Israel bombing Iran, hopefully back into the Stone Age, and the Auto-Pen presidency allowing an illegal (unvetted/unknown) invasion take place these past four years, I’m avoiding any major city this weekend. Especially any major northeastern city.
I was in a major SW airport a couple of years ago. The entire terminal was filled with African, military aged, males.
As I sat eating with my back to a wall, two women walked up horrified by the looks on their faces. They were the only two women there. I was the only non-African male. I offered them a seat and they took it. One even remarked to me, “the media keeps talking about families. Where are they?”
I hope I’m wrong, but I’m glad President Trump has the military ready to go. No “Summer of Love 2020’s,” again.
Trump’s DOJ is going after those funding and financing the riots, so heed caution you liberal loons.
MARK
Someone should tell these protesters that America does not have kings. That’s why we fought for our independence in 1775. We have an elected CEO known as the President of the United States. We’ve had 47 presidencies since winning the war against England.
it’s also Boy George’s Birthday Jon
Hey democRAT moron, I notice you don’t mention the following anymore:
*Egg prices DOWN
*Inflation DOWN
*Gas prices DOWN
*Tariff’s HELPING America
*Stock Market UP
*Border Crossings DOWN at RECORD LEVELS
***You just needed “comprehensive border legislation,” to do that too.
We know that translates to, we can’t lose the illegal alien representation in congress. Remember, population, not votes count.
But, “No Kings,” huh…
He missed a great opp to buy Tesla stock at discount. It was going for $230 a few weeks ago.
The United States Army is commemorating 250 years of serving and defending the American people. President Trump will thank our military with the parade and festival. Thank you to our military for the huge sacrifices made so we can live in freedom today. Troops will also be marching in the parade. The 250th United States Army anniversary also falls on President Trumps birthday.

Very soon: The U.S. National Debt will go over $37 trillion.
https://usdebtclock.org/
The Pentagon will soon spend over $1 trillion in fiscal year 2026, which will begin on October 01st, 2025.
https://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/5342338-a-trillion-dollars-annually-for-the-pentagon-military-spending-is-out-of-control/
The Republican’s would-be 2026 tax cuts would increase federal debts by trillions of dollars.
Well over 10 million people would lose social insurance government healthcare insurance, such as Medicaid.
While I am grateful that the U.S. Army and the other 5 military branches protect us, I also wonder who the U.S. Government is really serving in 2025.
From a mental health perspective, the causes of depression and suicide are homelessness, healthcare illnesses, joblessness and/or being underemployed, being stuck in the underclass, substance abuse disorders, loneliness (isolation), being abused, assaulted, bullied, chronic conflicts, violence, chronic stressors, and so on.
We as a society should be doing better on the above socioeconomic crises instead of the government primarily serving the financial, corporate and ruling elites.
The government is supposed to serve the people, but instead, greed, money and power win, while the rest of us lose or think we are winning by treading water.
Jon Melle
As usual Pat you are spewing facts. The No Kings, Jesters are calling it Trumps military parade. They can hold there card board signs and stomp their feet, but the facts will not change, Donald Trump is a two term President who is taking care of business. There rallies are a embarrassment.
Grab a MAGA hat and show up!
Why?They can’t even give me the definition of a Woman? Best to let them enjoy their echo chamber amongst their NPR friends. Their tantrums and tears will not change the facts, they lost the election.
Make it a maga rally.
CCP propaganda technique is to target rooted shared mythology and to corrupt them to be compatible with CCP thuggery. Our my ttb ology is rooted on uprooting kings. Its primitive but simplicity is the mother of genius.
When Patriots show up, the protesters will look pretty ridiculous. Like that outrageous assassin who painted himself in Ukraine and American colors while he burrowed into his rabbit hole planning to commit treason and sedition.
A few pro Trump folks did show up in Pittsfield.
One very vocal Trump supporter had the corner of Fenn and first all to himself and I got to hand it to him he was out there the entire length of the protest, yelling and shouting in support of his man.
That took some serious cojones, and he was cajoled and gave as good as he got.
I always wondered how many misinformed assholes could fit on the grounds of the Pittsfield Common? We will find out June14, between 3&5.
If assholes could fly, that place would be an airport that day.
This may be the weekend the wheels come completely off America. And perhaps the whole world. If you believe in God, this may be a good time to pray.
I can’t see older citizens here paying lumpy and Kufflinks-Banky tax increases. F the Middle East Russia or l A Senator, or Birthday parade.
Dan. Water rates have gone up over 150 percent in the last decade? Why. Now we’ve heard through the grapevine there are many issues at water sewer plant.Proerty Taxes are up for some 7 plus percent ?
You must be new to The Planet, welcome HC.
Your, my, our tax money, funded African vacations, the BBEC, Ricky Rumpus Roundabouts, and Dragtime Story Hour with Kids….never seniors in nursing homes, the sick, or any local VFW, just KIDS. To just name a few Bitchfield city sponsored projects.
Sorry to get off track HC. That’s why issues go unaddressed and/or unfixed in Bitchfield.
Keep in mind, the civil lawsuits haven’t even begun yet in the PHS pedophile problem.
Don’t forget the ski jumps Ricky Rumpus installed on Holmes and Partridge rds.
WTF is their purpose?
The one on Holmes is outright dangerous.
Re: seniors in nursing homes. If I recall correctly the former acting chief of police went to a conference in New York knowing that would put him at risk for covid, caught covid, passed it on to the rest of the force who passed it on to their nurse wives who all worked in local nursing homes ,who passed it on to our seniors and killed them, so yes our tax dollars did go to the seniors in the form of
eugenics disguised as whoopsie did I do that?
And let’s not forget how our tax dollars funded the police going to home Depot and every place they could and purchasing every single n95 and other mask so that nobody else in town would have them.
Wtf was that?
Already have, and good things are happening.
Huh? At what f ing cost?
When the cost of not fighting becomes unbearable, the cost of war no longer matters.
Sir Chaz,
What is the deal the the 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics use of $4 million in so-called FREE CASH relating to the $226.2-million fiscal year 2026 operating budget?
Please explain because I am in need of understanding how many percentage points the city government actually increased its annual spending.
It has always been around 5-percent per fiscal year going back at least 4-decades. If one adds in the $4 million in so-called FREE CASH, does the 2.8-percent spending increase actually grow to around 5-percent?
I am confused. I hope that you may understand what happened here.
Jon
Yes. Free Cash needs to be added to the tax levy to reflect taxpayer burden.
Free Cash is the product of over taxation. It comes from things like budgeting for 4 health inspectors in 2023 and hiring just two. Or accepting a grant and diverting it to reserves instead of spending it. Both are your money.
So a budget funded by taxes pulls in new money (not all to be burnt by the Fake Budget’s lines by years end) and consuming Free Cash burns old money.
Good point JM.
Betty Yahoo has lost his mind. Chaz U left. You smart.
I got out in record time
So fast I left my shoes in the house and drove off in just my socks. Not one penny more from my pocket into theirs.
Yea, The No Kings National Day Of Defiance is going to be something. The link below is a list of current monarchies in the world. Will they still be welcomed? Oh not one of them is named Trump.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_monarchies
Isn’t it ironic that the elites funding the No Kings rallies are the ones who want to be king
Yes, the No Kings’ reliance on billionaire backers exposes its hypocrisy, crusading against elite control while embodying the wealth-driven influence it claims to oppose, but the people supporting the No Kings’ have no idea what is really happening in this country and the world. They don’t realize that the far left has been trying to take down this country and they haven’t given up yet. The far left wants lawlessness so they can then blame President Trump and call him a dictator when he attempts to stop the rioting and restore order.
Who is paying the 45 million bucks for Trumps birthday celebration? Or is that not of your concern? I can think of much better ways to use that kind of money.
Dufus, US Army’s 250th
I believe I need a copy of that text book too.
I’m seriously considering speaking at the June 25th school committee meeting.
They’re not gonna like what I have to say.
I’m not a good public speaker!
Business writing is best. Start with your main point. No fluff and useless words. Omit the “thank you for listening”. Skip that. Keep it under 2 minutes. Forget style and you’ll do better and be confident.
Your audience is the public.
Eg” my name is Joe. Your plan to build a new school is outlandish. Please stop wasting my money on empty suits and please stop stealing. It’s wrong, and probably illegal.”
I would ask the Pittsfield School Committee: What about Allendale Elementary School that abuts Hill 78, which is a capped “leaky” landfill that is time-limited in containing GE’s industrial chemicals called PCBs that cause brain damage, including learning impairments, and cancer in human beings?
I would start off with,
“You people on the school committee are total morons. I am packing up my family and moving as far away as I can get.”
Say it in a firm but soft sincere voice and then head straight for the door. Just before exiting, turn and raise your middle fingers on both hands.
This message will express the views of most city parents, but sadly will not change one thing in how the school department operates.
Yes, that is simple, direct, and straight to the point. Leave out the finger – you already said that in your first line. But bring a suitcase instead. Walk it out the door.
A suitcase packed with Marchettis belongings?
But definitely tht is the primary point. You guys are morons and I am taking my money and leaving. And I’m selling my house at a discount.
Teacher’s Union President Randi Weingarten is one of the main No Kings organizers. Old Randi who never spoke out about what was being done in the schools to very young children with transitioning them without their parent’s knowledge because she is all for it. Others behind it are the George Soros clan and a Walmart heiress. Seems that wealthy people have nothing better to do than plot the destruction of our country. Walmart has tried to distance itself from the antics of the “Too much time on her hands” heiress. The Soros clan has been up to no good with interference in our legal system for years and they are continually trying to flip Texas blue. It’s these type of people along with many nefarious NGOs who are behind the No Kings protests and tells all we need to know about their bad intentions for this country.
Speaking of billionares, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezoes and Mark Zuckerberg all helped fund Trumps election and stood proud with him at his inauguration. I wonder what these wealthy people are plotting huh?
This is about Democrats hypocrisy for putting down Trump’s relationship with Musk and other wealthy people when the Dems protests are being funded by billionaires. Trump’s billionaire friends want to Make America Great Again unlike the billionaires on the left who want a take down of our country
Huma Abedin, ex of Anthony Weiner, just married Alex Soros. They were set up by Hillary Clinton. The Democrats are all in tight with the billionaire Soros family and their globalist policies.
Did you guys see that Musk exposed that Trump is in the Epstien files. We all knew this but now that Musk told you its true what can we do?
Everyone is in the Epstein files – that is why they are called the Epstein Files. The King of Denmark is in it too.
Martin Luther King Jr. Is probably in the files too.
I don’t think so. Haven’t you heard? “No Kings in America.”
Who’s going to the Trump fascist military parade styled after all strongmen parades…Ukraine and Gaza Iran Israel and America all on fire today.Trump just wanted peace.
So the suspect in the mn state Senator and Rep shootings is a doctor..
Satanic people are everywhere.
Looking at the pictures from Bitchfield’s “no kings” rally it could pass as a signup session for AARP. Meanwhile the Dems are spending 20 mil to figure out why young men are leaving the party…https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/columnist/2025/06/05/democrats-men-vance-buttigieg-trump/83946686007/
These A R P A’s don’t realize that their President is elderly. He’s not going to touch their S S I . President Trump is going to increase it with zero taxation. It’s the free loaders that have S S I in debt not the Presidents reduction in S S D I and Medicaid. Get rid of these methadone terminals and you won’t have as many homeless transients.
I heard the protest ended early for the AARP crowd so they could go home and take their Metamucil.
If the Highland had offered an early bird special for seniors on Saturday evening they would have made enough money to retire

Re: The Berkshire Eagle and its double standards
Hello blogger Dan Valenti,
The Editors of the Berkshire Eagle write lofty opinion pieces advocating for government transparency in state and local government in Massachusetts. While at the same time, the Eagle is a biased news media outlet that has blacklisted me – Jon Melle – from publishing the many letters I have sent to the Eagle over the years. Moreover, the Eagle defended the horrible, secretive settlement between the corrupt EPA and the polluter GE that would so-called clean-up of the polluted Housatonic River of GE’s industrial chemicals called PCBs and plans to put a capped “leaky” landfill in Lee, Massachusetts.
The bottom line is that Pittsfield’s Level 5 (failed), Group 11 (underclass) public school district failed to address the serious allegations by Pittsfield High School (PHS) – my Alma Mater, 1993 – students. Moreover, Pittsfield’s elected officials refuse to release the taxpayer-funded legal report with limited redactions to the general public, despite state law. Furthermore, when I wrote to Governor Maura Healey about these facts, her office emailed me to contact the same Pittsfield elected officials that failed to address the allegations by the PHS students.
This is why people, including myself, move out of Massachusetts. First, the Eagle and its double standards of being lofty while biased. Second, the elected officials do NOT care about the people they serve, but rather, they are all about greed, MONEY and POWER for the elites. Third, when “Jon Melle” exercises FREE SPEECH, it is met with RETRIBUTION by the elites, as well as the Eagle. Fourth, the common people do NOT count, but rather, the state and local government only does DISSERVICES to us on many levels.
God. I hate it when the Eagle and others pretend to be so lofty in their ideals, but then their actions are anything but. I would rather have it be direct. It is almost like they are luring good people into their network, only to entrap us with their double standards.
Lastly, Pittsfield School Committee Chair Dr. Bill Cameron should NOT have promised transparency only to refuse to release the taxpayer-funded legal report to the general public. Pittsfield School Committee Member – and former Pittsfield Mayor – Sara Hathaway should NOT have chuckled while saying to a young women PHS student who spoke at open mic: You kinds with your anxieties. The 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics SILENCE on these matters is WRONG.
Best wishes,
Jon Melle

Our Opinion: “PHS report’s price tag underscores why taxpayers should be able to see it”
The Berkshire Eagle, Editorial, June 14, 2025
Our advocacy for the release of the full Pittsfield High School investigation report is rooted in the principle of official transparency and the priority for the city’s school district to regain constituents’ trust. But it’s also rooted in a sense of fairness for Pittsfield’s taxpayers, who should be able to see the report they paid for.
The itemized invoice from Bulkley Richardson & Gelinas, obtained Wednesday by The Eagle, shows how the firm logged its hours of reviewing documents, interviewing witnesses, communicating with officials by phone and email, strategizing next steps and drafting and revising its findings.
By our lights, that argument gained additional heft when we recently learned just how much the people of Pittsfield shelled out for this probe: $154,502.47. The six-figure price tag reflects the reality that thorough professional inquiries aren’t cheap. Still, throwing some disinfecting sunlight on a trying time for the county’s largest public school district would be a worthwhile investment. Even after this investigation has wrapped, however, we still must use the conditional “would” — because the proverbial sunlight can only do its disinfecting job if it illuminates the full and potentially painful truth for the eyes of all in the community rather than a chosen few officials.
The “executive summaries” don’t cut it. District families deserve the whole truth about not just the alarming allegations against PHS staff past and present that raised these controversies but the managerial culture and reporting system in which they festered. As we’ve argued previously, the executive summaries used ill-defined evidentiary standards to support their proffered conclusions that these allegations were largely “unsupported.” Further, a primary reason this investigation was necessary in the first place was that Pittsfield Public Schools needed to rebuild community trust eroded by controversy, which is achievable only through true transparency. If the conclusions forwarded by the executive summaries are similarly supported by the full report, then why not reassure district families by letting them see it?
Pittsfield School Committee Chairman William Cameron has argued that the whole truth should be shielded from public view because of privacy concerns and personnel records bound up in the full report. Yet those are not blanket excuses for secrecy. That’s not our opinion; it’s the ruling of the state’s Division of Public Records. After the Pittsfield School Committee rejected a Pittsfield parent’s Freedom of Information Request for the report, that local citizen appealed to the state. The state’s public records officer sided with the citizen, ordering the district to release a redacted version of the report.
That order held that while exemptions to state public records law are appropriate in certain limited circumstances, any exemption claim requires “a balancing of the public’s right to know against the relevant privacy interests at stake.” That reasoning underscores the entire point of the state’s public records law, as emphasized by Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin: “Every government record in Massachusetts is presumed to be public unless it may be withheld under a specifically stated exemption.”
After the Pittsfield School Committee sought “clarity” on that ruling, the Division of Public Records ordered an in-camera review of the report to be conducted with school district representatives and the Pittsfield parent who made the public records request. In this process, the district can make its case as to why elements of the report should be exempted from public view, and then the state’s public records officer can decide whether those exemptions are merited on a case-by-case basis. Based on our preference for as much transparency as reasonably possible, this seems a much better alternative to the Pittsfield School Committee blocking their constituents’ view of the report based on blanket (and specious) public record exemption claims.
As far as we know, that review process is still ongoing. We are not against minimal, sensible redactions to a publicly released version of the PHS report; we’ve consistently argued that approach could mitigate privacy and liability concerns while still giving appropriate weight to the need for utmost transparency. For the sake of the city’s students and families, as well as the integrity of their public school district, we are for giving the people of Pittsfield the fullest possible view of the facts. As this review continues and hopefully concludes in a timely manner, we encourage all parties participating to keep the recently revealed cost of this report in mind: $154,502. That’s 154,502 more reasons why this report must be brought into the disinfecting light.
All I can say is, if they really think Tump is a King then “Long live the King”!
