ELEPHANTS & LIONS, OH MY! … or … DANIEL IN THE LION’S DEN, Pt. 3
By DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI News Commentary
Third of 3 Parts
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEEKEND EDITION, MAY 1-3, 2015) — On May Day, THE PLANET skips the parade of missiles and ballistics, intending, rather, to conclude our series on the circus crisis in Dalton. Interesting, those two words: “c-i-r-c-u-s” and “c-r-i-s-i-s” — how alike in parts, how similar in pairing.
In Parts 1 and 2 of our series, in addition to exposing the dirty deeds of Lions publicity director and circus fanatic Dan McGinnis, we addressed (though “demolish” might be more appropriate) the arguments for the circus with wild animals raised by proponents. THE PLANET called McGinnis’ bluff. We invited him to defend his position. Rather than meet the challenge, he ran. Rhetorically, McGinnis has been revealed as a doddering fool drooling verbal oatmeal down his chin, particularly when he repeats his unsupported claim that circus elephants are more pampered than your beloved house pets.
Facts are Irrefutable: Circuses Torture Wild Animals
By the way, not many circus buffs by the way can’t be considered loons. True, the latter observation is not an argument, but neither is it an opinion. It is an observation. THE PLANET‘s arguments in supporting the proposed Dalton bylaw that would ban the use of wild animals in performances such as circuses have been based on data and facts pertaining to the treatment of elephants and tigers snatched from the wild and tortured into “learning” how to dance on pinheads and jump through fire hoops.
The evidence is irrefutable: wild circus animals live a life of misery, confinement, and constant abuse. No enlightened society can support this. That is what’s at stake for the Town of Dalton on Monday, May 4 at the town meeting. Will the town stand up and make history by ushering in a new and educated era, or will it declare itself a backward, one-toothed hill town that for its “entertainment” must see animals being tortured?
The “arguments” of the circus loons can’t stand up to the scrutiny of sangine reason. Some “arguments” aren’t worth the bother, such as, “Oh, but the children enjoy circuses.” Seriously? First, there are plenty of circuses that don’t use wild animals. Children would love them. Second, children enjoy picking their noses and consuming the salty harvest. It doesn’t make it right.
Walto and DiFazio Comment
Here, as promised, are the comments of Dalton town manager Ken Walto and library director Rob DiFazio. We shall note that neither McGinnis nor any Dalton Lion has responded to our request for comment. On our TV show last night, which torched McGinnis and brought the truth to bear on his ham-handed tactics, we repeated our invitation to defend the indefensible. Well, guess what, the statute of limitations has expired. The dolts had their chance.
Now to the comments. Here’s the transcript of our e-interview with Walto:
——– 000 ——–
THE PLANET: Did McGinnis visit you about this issue?
WALTO: Yes.
PLANET: Did he threaten you in any way?
WALTO: No. He was concerned about having the other side of the issue discussed, too.
PLANET: What did you tell him?
WALTO: I referred him to the library trustees.
PLANET: Do you support the library’s decision? Why or why not?
WALTO: As I understand it, the library trustees felt that the library needs to avoid any perception of supporting [or] assisting a controversial cause.
PLANET: Will you help to find another venue so that citizens can at least have access to the information? Open access to information is essential for the health of a community. Do you agree?
WALTO: The film might be aired on Dalton Community TV which is at 151 Park Ave. 684-4441. Also, the issue will be fully discussed at the Annual Town Meeting on Monday May 4th . (Wahconah HS Auditorium 7:00pm, Warrant Article 22). The full text of the Warrant is available @ Dalton-ma.gov.
——– 000 ——–
The key exchange in this terse back-and-forth is:
PLANET: Do you support the library’s decision? Why or why not?
WALTO: As I understand it, the library trustees felt that the library needs to avoid any perception of supporting [or] assisting a controversial cause.
Perfect. Notice Walto doesn’t answer the question. He dodges, completely. He fakes left and tricky-dribbles right — a (ugh!) “politician” caught in the act of not wishing to be counted, not wanting to take a stand, not willing to push the issue one way or another. He is the town manager, true, and not the mayor. All the more reason for him to guide the town into a more enlightened policy represented by Article 22 on the agenda for the Monday, May 4, election. But no. He wants to wimp out.
THE PLANET contacted library director Rob DiFazio. This issue exploded when DiFazio was on vacation in South Carolina — another of those Daltonian coincidences, we’re sure. A word about DiFazio. Sources tell us he’s a “new hire whose background was [the] Albany Medical Center library. He’s a babe in the woods where public library and provincial town influence is concerned.” Sources say he had “that deer-in-the-headlights expression” when this issue came to light. He told THE PLANET:
Generally speaking, the Library doesn’t allow outside groups to use our space, as we don’t have any private/closed off meeting areas. We’re a relatively small building, and as such, when we do host programs they tend to impede the normal flow of traffic/use. As such, we generally stick with more traditional programs, such as story hours, book discussions, etc… I decided to agree to the Berkshire Voters For Animal Rights request because I did consider it to be an important issue. Unfortunately, we received significant backlash from several people. I was on vacation in South Carolina at the time, so I didn’t deal directly with anyone, but I know complaints were received by library staff, town officials, select board members, and library trustees. To the best of my knowledge, no threats were made, but it became apparent that holding the event would cause a significant impediment to our regular operation. As such, the library trustees felt it would be best to cancel the event, since our primary responsibility is to maintain our normal operation. I’m confident that if we did have the facilities to hold events in rooms/areas outside of our normal traffic areas, the event wouldn’t have been cancelled.
I certainly agree that we have an obligation to ensure the free flow of information. However, our primary obligation is to ensure that our patrons are able to use our facility in an unimpeded manner. I believe that is the reason several other area venues decided not to provide space for the film. We aren’t planning to rescind our decision to cancel the showing, but we are planning to acquire a copy of the film for our collection.

This, too, is a political response, careful to seem to agree with our points all the while saying (not in so many words) that “we caved to the loudmouths of one man and a few of his friends.”
DiFazio’s e-mail reveals the following:
(1) The library certainly DOES have the facilities to host such an event. The agreement to hold the film in the first place proves that.
(2) He agrees that it is “an important issue.”
(3) He admits to receiving “significant backlash.” That is code for “bullying” and “threats.”
(4) He says “no threats were made” but is careful to qualify “to the best of our knowledge.” Cute.
(5) DiFazio states “it became apparent that holding the event would cause a significant impediment to our regular operation.” THE PLANET reads this statement, too, as code for saying, “We were told by The Lions, presumably McGinnis, that is we showed the film, there would be real trouble.”
Vote ‘Yes’ on Article 22, Daltonians!
Well, there it is. Our Day at the Circus. We entered this story late, not having decided where the truth could be found. We did our research, talked to a lot of folks, and quickly learned that the truth is with Berkshire Voters for Animals and not with one clueless man who managed to bully the officials of an entire town.
That sets up a perfect opportunity for Daltonians to send two LOUD messages by voting “yes” on article 22. With that vote, Dalton will say:
(1) We DO NOT CONDONE and WILL SUPPORT the torture of animals.
(2) We hereby reclaim the town, in the name of We The People, from the hands of a bully.
It shall be a glorious night.
Have a great weekend, everybody.

LOVE TO ALL.
Mr Valenti. When did The Planet become a extension of PETA? What’s next will you do a blog on the evils of hunting? The sad part of this issue is most people for this don’t even live in Dalton! People care more about elephants than the real problems in this world like homeless people, child abuse and other important issues.
It seems if you care about the welfare of animals you re lumped in as a radical who doesn’t care about the welfare of humans. This is not true one is not exclusive of the other.
Since the circus is in Dalton only Dalton people can vote. Although the tickets are sold in Pittsfield and I am sure else where. They are also advertised through out the county.
Berkshire County is one big
After Monday….How will Dalton be seen in the History books as a evolved community or those who dont evolve with the imes
The 1950s was a grand old time for only one group of people
I wonder who paid for the bill board in Coltsville?are the owners of Berkshire Money Managers who put a full page ad.in The Eagle from Dalton? Follow the money!
Yes, they live in Dalton, not that that should make one iota of difference as this is about the worldly issue of abuse which comes in so many forms-pick your cause Jimmy Gee and start making your own difference rather than sniping away as if you’re merely deadwood floating in the backwaters of Berkshire County….
First it was the greyhound . Now it’s the Elephant , what’s next race horses? Today is the Kentucky Derby how cruel it is for those horses! I just caught a mouse in a trap , I guess I’m going straight to Hell!
Dan,
Jimmy Gee decides what you write about. He decides what is interesting and to whom. He attacks commentors in your comment section. He is taking charge here.
He alone is trying to turn this into Planet Gee.
You had better tow the line. Wouldn’t want to anger Jimmy.
Mr. control Freak you got it wrong, our friend Jimmy Glee, son, loves to troll to get it going.
Dv and DV alone decides all including to generaously allow Jimmy to get it going. Thanks Dan for the Planet……
Sorry. I’m not Jimmy Gleason.
If any city of Pittsfield residents want to see how out of control the city council president is and how time after time she abuses the power granted to her by the city voters.Than they should watch the broadcast of the April 28,2015 city council meeting.
She can not even follow her own rules and because of that she must resign immediately.
Bye Bye Mrs. Mazzeo. The public has seen you abusing me at city council meetings. Your days are numbered.
Try not being so disrespectful of the process at a council meeting. Maybe SOMEONE would actually listen to your rants. I still won’t but somebody will.
Hello all Planet Valenti followers:
I came across a quote written by William Randolph Hurst. The first part of the paragraph could easily be him talking about me. The last
part of the paragraph he could easily talking about some Planet Valenti contributors.
Here is the quote ” Any man who has the brains to think and the nerve to act for the benefit of the people, and the country is considered a radical by those who are content with stagnation and willing to endure disaster.”
Do you Jimmy Gee, Carolyn Berry, Ed McClellan etal spewers of hate and lies recognize yourself in the last part of the paragraph above.
In case you are not aware. I am out there everyday fighting for you. Enough said.
Very Sincerely,
Craig C Gaetani
You, Sir; Are no William Randolph Hearst !, to wit:…He liked women.
(Sorry, maybe your “Hurst” is a different guy).
The last I knew his name was Hearst, her name was Barry and his name was McClelland et.al. Anyway keep up the fight. Your presents at the council meetings add a little spice to an otherwise boring evening. Sadly, at least for you Melissa will be the top vote getter in the November 3 Pittsfield election.
“presence” Mr Thomas.
Sorry, I knew it was wrong but I couldn’t figure why – oh well i’l keep my
Really didn’t care, but the old glass houses thing.
That’s why Hurst is famous for YELLOW JOURNALISM. Look it up Craig.
ABSOLUTELY STELLAR!! BRILLIANT!! U deserve a resounding round of applause & a standing ovation!! THANK U!! On behalf of ALL SENTIENT BEINGS, who’s unheard voices, & untold stories, that have never been witnessed, investigated or told. Who have endured countless years, and thousands of miles of confinement, performances, abuse & enslavement within the traveling circuses, have now, just been given a voice! I just wanted to say…. THANK U! DVPLANET!! IN LIGHT & PEACE TO ALL BEINGS WHO ARE SENTIENT! Karen!
PETA are a bunch of left wing kooks…….but they !might be right in this case……there is no need to brutalize animals so they make people feel amused. It seems circus animals are brutiluzed……no need to Michael Vick them..
I agree, there no need to brutalized animals so they make people amused. We don’t even need to go to the circus to be amused, just turn to the City Council Meetings.
And by the way Mr. Gaetani, thank you for being out there fighting for us, you have the backbones to stick up for what you believe like many of us wouldn’t.
Someone mentioned horse racing. Is anyone fighting for the horses or is their entertainment generally for a higher class crowd? They may be loved and well treated but they are still slaves.
But no one is betting on the elephants!
meant “there’s no need”
What will we do with all the elephants when they no longer have a job….are they considered white meat or dark meat?
Animals deserve the right to be free and not caged. How would we as people like to be caged.
Ask anyone in jail.
Dance the jig,pay the fiddler.
There are so many other awesome kinds of circuses without using animals!
Following the example of the Dalton Public Free Library, the Berkshire Courier has printed a thoroughly slanted article/advertisement in favor of animal-based circuses. Their editors would have to be ILLITERATE not to feel the balance tilt in the weight of their chosen wording. The bulk of the article is found in quotes from Dalton selectpeople, every single one negative and provincial. Junk journalism which qualifies as “spin” with just a few days before the vote with zero outreach to the proponents of the ban.
I prefer acrobats without the net.
Here’s what I posted today as a general status post on FB. Before I post, I’m curious who decided or gave to rights to humans to do whatever they want on Earth? Anyway, here it is:
Here’s the funny thing, I ran 3 separate benefit events on 3 separate days for 3 separate beneficiaries. I raised approximately $17,000 without any sorts of performing animals being involved. These events were all in one day, in Pittsfield, and I think it went $8k, $6k, $3k if I remember correctly. So that’s pretty good. I mean, that’s actually AWESOME. So when I read that statement below in the photo, that the Dalton Lions Club has “raised almost $70k” (or just over) SINCE THE 1990s, I was somewhat taken aback. That would mean the following: it’s been about 20 years give or take for this circus event to have been held. Take $70k divided by 20, you have $3,500 ANNUALLY that they get after expenses. That means they have raised approximately $9.58 PER DAY, for a full calendar year. Hahaha, not only are they ignorant, they’re also shitty fundraisers!!!
The point to draw from NotARedneck’s genuine fund-raising efforts philanthropically and business-wise is that Dalton Lions Club circus exists solely on contributions by duped local business owners. These owners are enablers of a select cadre of die hard Circus Fans of America/Lions Club members who continue their precious fixation on live animal entertainment at the expense of reputation and good will of their parent organization and local business contribution.
I love horse racing. Should we end all horse racing too? Watching the Kentucky Derby yesterday was such an awesome experience. The horses are beautiful to watch. I don’t like horse racing for the gambling. I love it to watch the horses run which many of them seem to love. We know that abuses do happen to race horses, but there are laws in place to protect them from abuse. There is a huge difference between training an animal and abusing them. Many animals out in the wild live only a few years and many starve and have difficult living conditions. Most circus people seem to really become attached to the animals and treat them very well. There should be punishment against anyone who abuses any animal.
Pat, horse racing has issues of course and while wild horses are most likely a species we will no longer see in our lifetime, domesticated horses will still race and still be sold for food. It’s not a pleasant industry and it’s really one step at a time. Elephants and other wild animals are not native to North America and last I checked, tigers weren’t jumping through hoops of fire in the wild just for shits and giggles. Even though I don’t like either, horse racing isn’t on the same level as a circus. Horses RUN as part of their instincts. Elephants don’t dance and tigers don’t play with fire. Laws are laws and unless they’re actually enforced, they’re useless, sadly.
I HATE TIME WARNER CABLE, I didn’t mean to say that 5 times 🙁
I’ll say it again. Why does the Lions club want all this grief? There are so many other options for fundraising. I personally don’t care what they do but something is odd. Is there one or two people in that organization that is fixated with circuses? The membership seems rather small.
I think the answer Paul is that they think they are better than anyone else…bunch of out of touch old guys who are bossing cuz they )think) they can…
This is a great philosophical question. What is man’s/human’s role with animals? Do we domesticate them?, eat them?,use them as pets or therapy? should we save them from extinction or be Darwinian? How is their all to be decided with billboards and propaganda in a small Berkshire town? It seems like it should be a topic of deep thought and discussion. I am pretty sure none of the people on this forum are the high and mighty supreme being that can make the all important decision. It is funny how it is only talked about when the circus is almost here but never after it leaves.
